2002 Review

The 2002 Moravian College baseball team saw several record broken and many young players getting a chance to play as the Greyhounds posted a record of 13-25.

Senior outfielder Michael Abbate (South Plainfield, NJ/Bishop Ahr HS) was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star Second Team, the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Academic Team and the Verizon Academic All-District squad. Abbate had one of the best seasons in Moravian history. He set school records for games played (38), hits (43) and at-bats (131) while hitting .328. Abbate also had 34 runs scored, ten doubles and 27 walks, which each rank second in school history. In his career, Abbate set the Moravian marks for games played (133), at-bats (422), runs scored (118), doubles (27), walks (96) and stolen bases (39). He is fourth in hits (118) and total bases (150).

Junior first baseman Bob Frey (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) also broke a pair of Moravian single season records this spring, setting the mark for home runs with nine and the record for RBIs with 38. Frey, who hit .305 with 40 hits including five doubles, 23 runs and 29 walks, also set the career record for homers with 17. Junior third baseman/catcher Jeff Meila (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) hit .320 this season with 40 hits, 30 RBIs, 22 walks, 20 runs, eight doubles and two homers. Sophomore infielder Matthew Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst HS), who earned a spot on the MAC All-Academic Team, finished with a .309 batting average including 38 hits, 30 runs, 20 RBIs, 24 walks, eight stolen bases and two home runs.

Freshman outfielder Chris Clancy (Kendall Park, NJ/Bishop Ahr HS) hit .302 in his debut season with 35 hits, 21 runs, 20 RBIs, 16 walks and seven doubles. On the mound, Clancy posted a 3.98 earned-run average despite a 1-6 record in a team leading 54 1/3 innings. Clancy tossed four complete games and had one shutout and one save while striking out 30 batters. Sophomore outfielder Ethan Ordog (Roebling, NJ/Holy Cross HS) was a member of the MAC All-Academic Team had he collected 19 hits, 16 RBIs, nine runs and a homer this season while sophomore catcher Geoffrey Deen (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS) had 23 hits, 16 runs, nine RBIs and three home runs.

Sophomore outfielder/pitcher Greg Peters (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) had 22 hits on the season with 25 RBIs, 23 runs, 27 walks, two triples and five homers at the plate. On the mound, Peters was 2-2 with a 5.79 ERA in 28 innings of action. He collected one save and struck out 17 batters. Senior designated hitter/pitcher Bill Quinn (Lebanon, CT/Lyman Memorial HS) had 17 hits, 11 RBIs, 11 runs and four homeruns in his final season and he tossed 15 innings on the mound with 13 strikeouts. Freshman shortstop/pitcher Chris Benigno (Howell, NJ/St. Rose HS) had 15 hits, 19 runs and a homer in his first year and he pitched ten innings with a 1-0 record and four strikeouts.

Junior infielder/pitcher Ryan Boyle (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS), who was named to the MAC All-Academic Team, collected six hits and six runs in limited action at third base and he pitched 23 innings with a 1-3 record, a complete game and seven strikeouts. Sophomore infielder Anthony Capo (Little Falls, NJ/Passaic Valley HS) contributed four hits and six runs while freshman catcher William Flynn (Sparta, NJ/Lenape Valley HS) and freshman outfielder/pitcher Stephen Tomaszewski (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) each had two hits with Tomaszewski pitching 23 1/3 innings with 18 strikeouts. Sophomore catcher Michael Young (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton HS) had two hits with one homer and three RBIs.

On the mound, sophomore Brett Porter (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park HS) led the Greyhounds with a 4-3 record. Porter had a 5.66 ERA with four complete games, one shutout and 18 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings. Freshman Andrew Wach (Boonton, NJ/Boonton HS) had a 2-1 mark with a 5.48 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 23 innings.

Senior Randy Woolley (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional HS) closed out his Moravian career with a 2-5 slate this season. Woolley tossed two complete games and had 30 strikeouts in 50 innings of work. Sophomore Andrew Park (Harrisburg, PA/Lower Dauphin HS) tossed 20 innings with eight strikeouts this season.

The Greyhounds lose just three players from this season’s squad and will look to challenge for a Commonwealth Conference playoff berth next spring.
