2004 Review

The 2004 Moravian College baseball team made its second straight appearance in the postseason and reached the Commonwealth Conference Championship game before the third-seeded Greyhounds lost to second seed Juniata College, 4-1. The run to the championship contest finished off an outstanding season for Moravian, which was under the direction of head coach Ed Little. Little has a career record of 311-324-2 in 22 seasons. He guided the Greyhounds to a 15-22 mark this spring including a 12-9 mark in Commonwealth Conference action.

The Greyhounds, who were also the third seed a year ago, lost their opening round game to the Eagles, 10-2 before defeating fourth seeded Elizabethtown College, 4-2, and top seed Messiah College, 5-0, in elimination games.

Moravian had 291 hits this season with 65 extra-base hits, 44 doubles, nine triples and 12 home runs. Senior shortstop Matt Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst HS) led the Greyhounds with a school record tying 43 hits and a .355 average with 15 RBIs, 31 runs, 11 stolen bases, six doubles, a triple, a home run and 16 walks. Turtell, who was named to the 2004 Commonwealth All-Conference First Team as a utility player, also set a school record with 107 assists in the field while seeing time at both shortstop and second base.

Senior catcher/designated hitter Michael Young (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton HS) added a .351 batting average to go with 34 hits, 21 RBIs, eight runs, seven doubles, a triple and 17 walks. Young was also named to the Commonwealth All-Conference First Team as a designated hitter. Sophomore first baseman Richie Cline (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport HS) contributed 36 hits, 24 runs, 23 RBIs, a double, a triple and seven home runs.

Freshman outfielder Pete Moore (Bogota, NJ/Bogota HS) had a .315 batting average, 35 hits, 20 runs, nine walks, four doubles, two triples, two home runs and 14 RBIs in his debut season while junior infielder/catcher Mike Trimble (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) added 21 hits to go along with 15 runs, a double and seven RBIs in his first season with the Greyhounds. Junior pitcher/outfielder Chris Clancy (Kendall Park, NJ/Bishop Ahr HS) collected 18 hits, ten RBIs, 11 runs, three doubles and a triple.

Senior outfielder Ethan Ordog (Roebling, NJ/Holy Cross HS) added 17 hits, 13 walks, three doubles, seven runs and 11 RBIs. Senior infielder/outfielder/pitcher Greg Peters (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) had 17 hits, 13 runs, 20 RBIs, 17 walks, five doubles, a triple and two home runs while junior infielder/pitcher Chris Benigno (Howell, NJ/St. Rose HS) contributed 16 hits, ten runs, two doubles, a triple, six walks and six RBIs.

Sophomore second baseman Andrew Wayne (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) added 17 hits, 13 runs, ten walks, five doubles and 12 RBIs after stepping into the starting line-up halfway through the season while sophomore catcher Adam White (Bernville, PA/Tulpehocken HS) had seven hits, five runs, four RBIS and a double. Freshman first baseman Mike Dubitsky (Westfield, NJ/Westfield HS) had four RBIs and three runs on four hits and four walks while sophomore first baseman Bryan Wolf (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) contributed six hits with four runs and a triple before suffering a season-ending injury.

Freshman outfielder/pitcher Sean Brown (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional HS) had five hits, three runs, five RBIs and a double while junior outfielder/pitcher Steve Tomaszewski (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) contributed nine hits, 10 runs, two doubles and eight RBIs when not on the mound. Junior infielder/pitcher Adam Goetz (Dunellen, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) added five runs, a hit and a double.

On the mound, junior Andrew Wach (Boonton, NJ/Boonton HS) was 2-1 with a save, a 0.93 ERA, a complete game and nine strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings of work. Tomaszewski, who garnered a spot on the Commonwealth All-Conference First Team, had a 5-3 record with a 2.30 ERA, six complete games, two shutouts, 43 strikeouts and 22 walks allowed in 54 2/3 innings.

Peters had a 5-3 record with 37 strikeouts and a 3.35 ERA in 51 innings. Peters tossed four complete games with two shut outs of Messiah including the conference tournament game while Clancy posted a 2-4 record, 34 strikeouts, five complete games and a 5.60 ERA in 45 innings. Senior Brett Porter (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park HS) was 1-1 with a 5.68 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 38 innings. Porter also has one hit on the season. Brown had a 0-5 record, a 5.23 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder John Howarth (Livingston, NJ/Livingston HS) posted a 0-1 record and a 2.35 ERA in 7 2/3 innings of relief, and Howarth added two hits, two RBIs, six runs and a double while Benigno had a 0-3 record and 12 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings of action. Junior Daniel Wright (Reading, PA/Reading HS) tossed 12 1/3 innings with a 3.65 ERA and three strikeouts.

Coach Little is slated to have most of his team back next season, including four starting pitchers, as the Greyhounds look to challenge for the Commonwealth Conference title and an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
