2005 Review

The Moravian College baseball team posted a 10-26 record during the 2005 season with a 5-16 slate in Commonwealth Conference action. The team also traveled to Arizona for the first time during spring break. Head coach Ed Little’s squad hit .253 for the season and saw one of the school’s single season hitting records fall.

Sophomore shortstop Pete Moore (Bogota, NJ/Bogota HS), who was named to the Commonwealth All-Conference Second Team, led the Greyhounds with a school single season record of 49 hits and a .368 average to go along with 15 RBIs, 32 runs, 12 doubles, three triples, a home run, 13 walks and seven stolen bases. Moore also pitched two innings with one strikeout and one walk.

Senior outfielder/pitcher Chris Clancy (Kendall Park, NJ/Bishop Ahr HS), who earned a spot on the Commonwealth All-Conference Team as an outfielder, added 26 hits with 11 runs, three doubles and 13 RBIs, and Clancy was 2-5 on the mound, pitching 40 2/3 innings with 24 strikeouts and 16 walks. On the mound, freshman pitcher Trevor Lawrence (Lansford, PA/Marian Catholic HS). who was the Commonwealth Conference Co-Rookie of the Year, was 6-2, with a 2.80 ERA, six complete games, a shutout, 31 strikeouts, and 12 walks in 64 1/3 innings.

Junior first baseman Richie Cline (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport HS) had 32 hits including two homeruns, four doubles, a triple, 21 RBIs, 23 runs, 15 walks and a batting average of .264. Senior Steve Tomaszewski (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) has 23 hits, seven doubles, 19 RBIs, 14 runs and eight walks. On the mound, Tomaszewski has pitched 31 2/3 innings with 22 strikeouts and an 0-3 record.

Freshman outfielder Josh Baltz (Easton, PA/Easton HS) had 23 hits, 13 RBIs, 14 runs, six doubles, a triple, 15 walks and four stolen bases in his debut season for Moravian. Senior third baseman/pitcher Chris Benigno (Howell, NJ/St. Rose HS) added 25 hits, 20 RBIs, ten runs, eight walks and a team leading four home runs, and Benigno had a 1-1 record on the mound with one save, a 4.58 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings pitched. Sophomore catcher Colin Welles (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere HS) had 14 hits with 11 runs, a double, three homers and 12 RBIs after entering the line-up due to an injury midway through the season.

Freshman infielder/pitcher Brett Stout (Easton, PA/Easton HS) had 13 hits with ten runs, a double and five RBIs, and Stout was 0-2 with seven strikeouts in 15 innings pitched on the mound. Junior catcher Adam White (Bernville, PA/Tulpehocken HS) had nine hits, four doubles, six RBIs, five runs and six walks before being sidelined with an injury while junior designated hitter Bryan Wolf (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) had seven hits with six runs, eight walks three doubles and four RBIs.

Junior second baseman Andrew Wayne (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) had eight hits with five runs, one double, and two RBIs while sophomore Marc Panepinto (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS) added three hits with three runs, a home run, an RBI and a double. Freshmen outfielder/pitcher Daniel Edleman (Pottstown, PA/The Hill School) and outfielder Evan Walters (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights HS) and sophomore infielder Mike Rodrigues (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton HS) each had one hit with Walters adding an RBI and Rodrigues scoring a run. Edleman scored a run and tossed 5 1/3 innings on the hill with four strikeouts and a 0-1 mark.

On the mound, freshman Todd Remaley (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton HS) was 1-1 on the season with six strikeouts, and nine walks in 6 1/3 innings. Junior outfielder/pitcher John Howarth (Livingston, NJ/Livingston HS) was 0-5 with 25 2/3 innings pitched and eight strikeouts, and he added five hits, five runs, seven walks, a triple and an RBI.

Freshman Matthew Swartz (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore HS) tossed 212/3 innings with 18 strikeouts. Freshman Brandon Cohn (Newtown Square, PA/The Shipley School) pitched nine innings with an 0-2 record, five strikeouts and seven walks while senior Andrew Wach (Boonton, NJ/Boonton HS) was 0-3 with a 4.19 ERA and five strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings of action. Senior outfielder/infielder/pitcher Adam Goetz (Dunellen, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) tossed ten innings with four strikeouts, and Goetz also had seven hits, six runs, four walks and two RBIs.

Coach Little will have a majority of his line-up returning for the 2006 season, however, the team’s pitching staff will need to be rebuilt with the graduation of a quartet that tossed over 400 innings during their careers.
