2006 Review

The 2006 Moravian College baseball team, which started a combination of at least five freshman and sophomores each game with a young squad, was 5-32 this spring. The team had two players named to the Commonwealth All-Conference Second Team and traveled to Arizona for the second straight season during spring break. Head coach Ed Little’s squad hit .262 for the season and saw one of the school’s single season records fall.

Senior first baseman/designated hitter Richie Cline (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport HS), who was named to the Commonwealth All-Conference Second Team, led the Greyhounds with a .336 to go along with 44 hits (tied for 2nd most in a single season at Moravian), 22 runs, four doubles, three triples, six homers and 25 RBIs. Cline was the 11th player in school history to reach 100 career hits and finished 9th with 112 hits. Cline also finished his career second in school history with 15 career home runs including one in his final collegiate at-bat at Gillespie Field.

Sophomore outfielder Josh Baltz (Easton, PA/Easton HS), who also earned a spot on the Commonwealth All-Conference Second Team, had a .321 average in a school record 137 at-bats this season, and he added 44 hits (tied for second most in a season), 27 runs, eight doubles, two home runs, four stolen bases and 20 RBIs while sophomore second baseman John Bisco (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) had 23 hits, 17 runs, two doubles and ten RBIs. Cline tossed 14 innings with eight walks and five strikeouts while Bisco pitched 29 innings with 13 strikeouts, 24 walks and a 1-3 record.

Junior shortstop/outfielder Pete Moore (Bogota, NJ/Bogota HS) contributed 34 hits, 18 RBIs, 20 runs, seven doubles, a triple, three home runs and seven stolen bases, and Moore was the tenth player in school history with 100 career hits with a career total of 118, which is tied for eighth. Baltz and Moore each have pitched two innings with each player striking out one batter. Freshman third baseman Matthew McCarthy (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) had 24 hits, 13 runs, four doubles, a homer and 15 RBIs.

Freshman outfielder Joseph Durso (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brother Academy HS) also had 24 hits, 11 runs, four doubles, a triple, a homer and 21 RBIs while freshman outfielder Eric Shea (Madison, NJ/Morristown Beard HS) has 14 hits, nine runs, three doubles, two triples and four RBIs. Junior catcher Colin Welles (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere HS) contributed 18 hits with two homers, two doubles, 12 runs and 11 RBIs this season, and he threw out 16 base runners this spring.

Senior outfielder/pitcher John Howarth (Livingston, N/Livingston HS) added 17 hits with three doubles, six runs and seven RBIs, and Howarth tossed 22 1/3 innings with an 0-2 record, 15 walks and 16 strikeouts. Freshman first baseman/designated hitter Christopher Rue (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel HS) collected 15 hits, seven RBIs, two doubles and six runs while classmate catcher Thomas Czarnecki (Columbia, NJ/North Warren HS) had 13 hits, four runs, a double and five RBIs. Freshman second baseman Scott Hettinger (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson West Lawn HS) had seven hits, eight runs scored, two RBIs and a double for the Greyhounds while freshman shortstop Kevin Gambrino (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan HS) added nine hits, eight runs and four RBIs and freshman infielder Thomas Murray (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic HS) had two hits, three runs and two RBIs.

Sophomore pitcher Trevor Lawrence (Lansdale, PA/Marian Catholic HS) had a 3.88 ERA, 27 strikeouts, 19 walks and a 1-7 record in 53 1/3 innings while sophomore pitcher Matthew Swartz (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore HS) was 1-6 with 23 strikeouts and 19 walks in 40 innings. Sophomore pitcher/infielder Brett Stout (Easton, PA/Easton HS) tossed 37 2/3 innings with 16 walks, 19 strikeouts, a save, and an 0-4 record while sophomore pitcher Brandon Cohn (Newtown Square, PA/The Shipley School) had 13 innings pitched with six strikeouts, 12 walks, a save, a 4.85 ERA and a 1-0 mark. Stout also had five hits with a double, two runs and five RBIs.

Junior pitcher Josh Hunter (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton HS) pitched 27 2/3 innings with 11 strikeouts, 14 walks and a 1-5 mark while freshman pitcher Brian Davis (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) pitched 11 innings with an 0-2 mark, four strikeouts and eight walks. Sophomore pitcher Matt Kosensky (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central HS) tossed seven innings with three strikeouts and four walks.

With 21 players set to return next season and the addition of another recruiting class, coach Little expects the team to challenge for a playoff berth next year.
