2007 Review

The 2007 Moravian College baseball team was 16-20 this spring under the direction of new head coach Paul Engelhardt. Engelhardt came to Moravian after being an assistant coach at Lafayette College for five years, and led the Greyhounds to a 9-2 mark over the team’s final 11 games.

Senior shortstop Pete Moore (Bogota, NJ/Bogota HS), who was named to the Commonwealth All-Conference First Team, led the Greyhounds with a .396 batting average. Moore, pictured at right, set three school records with 53 hits, 39 RBIs and 107 assists in the field in 2007. He also added 36 runs which tied the single season school record, 11 doubles, six homers, four triples, eight walks and nine stolen bases. Moore is the school record holder in games played (145), at-bats (502), hits (171), doubles (34) and total bases (261) while being second in school history with a .340 career batting average, in runs (108) and RBIs (86)..

Junior outfielder Josh Baltz (Easton, PA/Easton HS) contributed a .346 average with 37 hits, seven doubles, two homeruns, and 19 RBIs. Baltz also has five stolen bases, 18 walks and a .977 fielding percentage. Sophomore outfielder Joseph Durso (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brother Academy), who earned a spot on the Commonwealth All-Conference Second Team, had 40 hits, 15 doubles, three homeruns, and 26 RBIs

Freshmen designated hitter/third basemen David Lengyel (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) had a .338 batting average, 27 hits, five doubles, one triple, one homerun and nine RBIs this season, while sophomore third baseman Kevin Gambrino (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan HS) had 24 hits, three doubles, and 11 RBIs for a .329 batting average. Sophomore outfielder Eric Shea (Madison, NJ/Morristown Beard HS) contributed 23 hits, four doubles, one triple, and six RBIs.

Senior catcher Colin Welles (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere HS) had 26 hits, 16 RBIs, 17 runs, 11 doubles, a homer and 21 walks. Sophomore first baseman Matthew McCarthy (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) contributed 23 hits with five runs, nine RBIs, 15 walks and three doubles while junior second baseman John Bisco (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) has 14 hits, six runs, nine RBIs and four doubles.

Freshman Andrew DeLio (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany HS) added 12 hits, eight runs, a double and four RBIs while freshman second baseman Michael Zubia (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) had 13 hits, 11 runs, two doubles and four RBIs. Sophomore outfielder/designated hitter Scott Hettinger (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson West Lawn HS) had five hits, seven runs, four RBIs and a double while sophomore first baseman/designated hitter Christopher Rue (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel HS) contributed seven hits, six runs, a homer and five RBIs.

Freshmen pitcher Christopher Morrison (Middlesex, NJ/Immaculata HS) put up a 3.68 ERA off of 48 hits, 13 walks, and 34 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched with a 3-3 record and one shutout. Junior Trevor Lawrence (Lansford, PA/Marian Catholic HS) had a 3-4 record with a 3.86 ERA from 55 hits, 10 walks, one shutout and 24 strikeouts in 49 innings pitched.

Freshmen pitcher Ryan Cummings (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East HS) posted a 3-3 record this season with 15 strikeouts, and 17 walks in 30 innings pitched, while senior Josh Hunter (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton HS) had a 3.63 ERA to go along with nine strikeouts, and four walks in 17 1/3 innings pitched for a 2-1 record with a shutout in his final career start. Junior Matthew Swartz (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore HS) contributed a 2-4 record off of 14 strikeouts, and 20 walks in 33 2/3 innings pitched.

Freshmen pitchers Andrew DelRossi (Medford, NJ/Bishop Eustace HS) and Joe Melchionna (Marlboro, NJ/St. John Vianney HS) both contributed two saves on the year, while freshmen Keith Shaffer (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale HS) had a 1-2 record to go along with three strikeouts, and six walks in 18 1/3 innings of play.

Freshman Richard Schultz (Drexel Hill, PA/The Haverford School) had a 1-0 record, four strikeouts in 11 innings while freshman Philip Spence (Lafayette, NJ/Newton HS) pitched 12 2/3 innings with a 1-1 mark and three strikeouts. Freshman Brandon Palmsiano (Mountainhome, PA/St. Pius X HS) had a 2.53 ERA and three strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings while junior Brett Stout (Easton, PA/Easton HS) added five hits, three runs, two doubles and an RBI at the plate and tossed 9 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.

Hettinger and sophomore catcher Thomas Czarnecki (Columbia, NJ/North Warren HS) each earned spots on the 2007 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Spring Academic Honor Roll.

With the loss of only three seniors for next year, coach Engelhardt expects the team to be able to challenge for a playoff berth in the new Landmark Conference next year.
