1999 Review

With the return of wood bats for the 1999 season, the Moravian College baseball team, which posted an overall record of 11-19-1, found itself in many close baseball games. In fact, 18 of the Greyhounds’ 31 games were decided by three runs or less. However, for head coach Ed Little’s club, Moravian had just a 6-11-1 record in those 18 games.

The Greyhounds, who opened the season in California using aluminum bats for the second straight year, finished the season with three straight wins including a season ending doubleheader sweep at Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth League rival Albright College.

A pair of Greyhounds made a run at the single season record for base hits. Sophomore outfielder Joe Pochron (Allentown/Salisbury HS) tied the record of 41 set by Jud Frank in 1992 and tied by Daryl Eisenhour in 1997. Junior second baseman Jarrett Hughes (Bangor/ Bangor Area HS) finished the season with 40 hits.

Pochron, who was named to the MAC Commonwealth League All-Star First Team, had a .366 batting average this spring with 41 hits in 112 at-bats. Pochron led the Greyhounds in homeruns with three this season. He also had 19 RBIs, 18 runs scored, 13 walks, four doubles and five stolen bases.

Classmate Curtis Hoff (Kintersville/Palisades HS) saw limited action as a designated hitter and at first base. He had nine hits on the season.

Sophomore catcher Dustin Levy (Vineland, NJ/Vineland HS) had ten hits and seven RBIs in 16 games before an injury sidelined him for the rest of the season. Freshman catcher Hank Reifsnyder (Upper Black Eddy/Palisades HS) took over behind the plate after Levy’s injury and collected 16 hits with 11 RBIs and 15 walks.

Junior infielder/pitcher Matt Seitzinger (Scranton/Scranton Prep) had ten hits with eight runs scored while classmate Mark Slavin (Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg HS) had four hits and four runs scored in limited action. Slavin, one of the Greyhounds’ starting pitchers played first base at the end of the season due to injuries.
