2000-01 Review

The Moravian College men’s basketball team finished the 2000-01 season on a high note as the squad captured wins in five of its last seven games including a pair of victories over teams ranked in the top 25.

Head coach Jim Walker, who finished his 21st season at Moravian with a record of 288-238 and his 22nd year of coaching overall with a mark of 303-248, led the squad to a 104-96 triumph over #1 Wilkes University on Alumni Day in February and an 81-78 road victory at #23 Elizabethtown College.

The Greyhounds finished the season with four players averaging over 11.0 points per game, a 9-15 overall record and 4-10 slate in the Commonwealth Conference but could have as many as 12 players back next season.

Senior guard David Jordan (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro HS) led the Greyhounds in scoring with an average of 16.1 points per game and he became the 16th player in Moravian history to surpass 1,000 points during the win versus Wilkes.  Jordan, who was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star Second Team this winter, completed his career with 1,059 points (15th in school history) and a school record 150 three-pointers.  Jordan made 54 three-pointers this season and also led Moravian with 39 steals.  He contributed 4.9 rebounds per game and 42 assists for the Hounds.  Jordan was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Salem Bank & Trust Tipp-Off Tournament hosted by Roanoke (VA) College after scoring a career high 39 points in the consolation game.

Senior forward Chris Hayn (Whitehall/Whitehall HS) finished his Moravian career by scoring 12.9 points per game and pulling down 5.3 rebounds per contest.  Hayn, who made 18 three-pointers during the season, also had 20 assists and 19 steals.  Hayn scored 695 points and pulled down 293 rebounds during his career for Moravian.

Sophomore guard Kevin Hall (Mountain Top/Pocono Mountain HS) might make a run at Jordan’s career three-pointer record after making 40 treys this season.  Hall, who was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Greyhound Nike Classic, averaged 11.8 points per contest for Moravian with 31 assists and 19 steals.

Sophomore forward Ken Greb (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional HS) paced the Greyhounds on the boards this season, pulling down 6.4 rebounds per contest.  Greb was the fourth Moravian player to average double figures in scoring at 11.2 points per game and has also led the team with 15 blocked shots.  Greb, a member of the All-Tournament Team at the Greyhound Nike Classic also had 48 assists and 26 steals.

Freshman guard Lucas Malishchak (Wanamie/Nanticoke HS) led the Hounds offense with 51 assists and he contributed 21 three points, 54 rebounds and 33 steals.  Malishchak scored 5.2 points per contest in a starting role while junior forward Mike Frew (Glen Ridge, NJ/Glen Ridge HS) averaged 4.2 points and 3.2 rebounds per game off the bench.  Frew also had 16 assists and 14 steals.

Freshman guard Steve Weiler (Edgewater Park, NJ/Burlington City HS) scored 76 points for the Greyhounds in a reserve role this season and he also had 27 rebounds, 21 assists and ten steals.  Junior guard Doug Spadt (Emmaus/Emmaus HS) added 67 points this winter to go along with 39 rebounds, 15 assists and 11 steals.  Junior guard Bruce DeLauder (Reading/ Reading Central Catholic HS) contributed 32 points off the bench while senior center Jason Greiger (Ottsville/Palisades HS) had 27 rebounds, 22 points and 16 assists as a reserve.  Sophomore guard Willie Reynolds (Bethlehem/Liberty HS) added 23 points this season and he was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Academic Team.

The Greyhounds had a pair of freshmen twin guards on the squad this year with Jay Leader (Halifax/Halifax HS) scoring 69 points with 36 assists, 33 rebounds and 13 steals while his brother Jon Leader (Halifax/Halifax HS) had 24 points, 17 assists, 11 rebounds and 10 steals.  Freshman guard Kevin Wyers (Hamilton Square, NJ/Notre Dame HS) contributed 29 points and 12 rebounds in his first season for the Greyhounds while freshman forward John Cartegna (Greentown/Wallenpaupack HS) had 19 rebounds and 15 points.

The Greyhounds will need to find a scorer to replace Jordan next season but Hall looks ready to step-up behind the three-point line and help the squad continue the hot conclusion to this season next winter.
