At Juniata College - Won 64-60

The Greyhounds snapped a four-game losing streak and finished the 2001-02 season with a 64-60 victory at Juniata College in Commonwealth Conference action. Moravian, ranked second in the nation in free throw percentage, shot 91.7 percent from the line in the game (11 of 12) and 48.1 percent from the floor. The Greyhounds trailed 35-34 at halftime and was down 58-54 with three minutes left in the second half before holding the Eagles to two points the rest of the game. Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski led all scorers in the game with 25 points. Zaleski, who also had six rebounds, four steals and three assists in the victory, finished the season with 477 points, the seventh highest single season total in Moravian history. Sophomore guard Kevin Wyers added 11 points for the the Greyhounds while junior forward Ken Greb scored ten points and had a team high nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Steve Weiler contributed nine points in the win. 

At Susquehanna University - Lost 79-76

Moravian was eliminated from the Commonwealth Conference playoffs with a 79-76 loss at Susquehanna University. The Greyhounds led by seven points midway through the first half but trailed 38-32 at halftime. The Crusaders would lead by as many as 14 points early in the second half before Moravian started to get back in the game. The Greyhounds retook the lead with 8:40 left in the contest on a three-pointer by senior guard Doug Spadt. Moravian, trailing by three, had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer but sophomore guard Steve Weiler's three-pointer bounced off the rim. Junior forward Ken Greb led Moravian with a career high 22 points while Spadt and freshman forward Brandon Zaleski each had ten points. Greb also had a team high six rebounds in the contest. Zaleski, the Greyhounds' leading scorer, played just 12 minutes in the game due to foul trouble. Zaleski and Weiler each had four games while Spadt and sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak each fouled out. Malishchak had seven points while freshman forward Mike Howell had eight points.

Vs. Widener University - Lost 82-73

The Greyhounds saw their playoff chances take a hit with an 82-73 loss to Widener University in Commonwealth Conference action. Moravian falls one game behind Susquehanna University for the final playoff spot and must win its final two games and hope Susquehanna losses its last two to earn a playoff berth. The two teams meet in Selinsgrove next Tuesday. Moravian led 39-35 a minute and a half into the second half but did not score for the next 7:22 while Widener went on a 13-0 run to take the lead for good. The Greyhounds shot 50.9 percent in the game but the Pioneers connected on 52.9 percent in the game and 59.3 percent in the second half. Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski led Moravian with 22 points and he added five rebounds. Sophomore guard Kevin Wyers netted a career high 14 points while junior forward Ken Greb had 13 points. Greb led the Greyhounds with six rebounds while sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak had nine points.  Senior forward Mike Frew scored eight points in his final career game while senior guard Doug Spadt added two points.

Vs. Elizabethtown College - Lost 87-73

Moravian suffered its second straight Commonwealth Conference, falling to #6 Elizabethtown College, 87-73. The Greyhounds, who trailed by three points, 39-36 at halftime, shot just 40.9 percent in the game while the Blue Jays connected on 58.6 percent of their shots. Elizabethtown also held a 42-26 advantage on the boards. Senior guard Doug Spadt led Moravian in scoring with 15 points while freshman forward Brandon Zaleski added 13 points and a team high seven rebounds. Junior forward Ken Greb contributed 12 points while junior guard Kevin Hall added nine points. The Greyhounds fall one game behind Susquehanna University for the final Commonwealth Conference playoff spot with the loss.

At Messiah College - Lost 79-72

The Greyhounds went cold from the field in the last six and a half minutes of the first half in a 79-72 Commonwealth Conference loss at Messiah College. Moravian had a 31-28 lead with 6:27 to play in the first half but netted just two free throws, falling behind 40-33 at the half. The Greyhounds, ranked in the top five nationally in free throw percentage, had their best game of the season at the charity stripe, a perfect 13 of 13 in the contest. The loss means the Greyhounds have to win at least three of their last four games with a win over Susquehanna University to make the Commonwealth Conference playoffs. Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski led all scorers in the game with 28 points and he pulled down a game high 12 rebounds. Junior forward Ken Greb was the only other Moravian player in double figures with ten points and he added five rebounds. Junior guard Kevin Hall, senior forward Doug Spadt and sophomore guard Steve Weiler each had eight points for the Greyhounds.

Vs. Albright College - Won 86-74

Moravian head coach Jim Walker earned his 300th victory at the school with an 86-74 victory over Albright College in Commonwealth Conference action. Walker has a record of 300-246 in 22 seasons at Moravian and he has an overall record of 315-256 over 23 years. Only legendary Moravian baseball coach Harvey Gillespie has move victories in one sport at Moravian than Walker (352 wins from 1935 to 1974). The Greyhounds trailed 28-21 with just under eight minutes left in the first half before going on a 24-12 run to end the half with a 45-40 advantage. Moravian led by as many as 12 points in the second half (66-54 with 8:50 remaining). One of the keys in the game for Moravian was its free throw shooting. The Greyhounds, ranked second in the nation at 77.9 percent coming into the game, made their first 19 free throws of the contest before finishing 20 of 22. The first miss came with just 50 seconds left in the game. Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski led five Moravian scorers in double figures with a game high 25 points. Sophomore guard Steve Weiler added 12 points while senior guard/forward Doug Spadt added 11 points and a game high 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak added 11 points, four assists and three steals while junior guard Kevin Hall had ten points. Zaleski pulled down eight rebounds and added three steals in the victory while senior forward Mike Frew had nine rebounds and six points. Junior forward Ken Greb added five rebounds to help Moravian post a 39-35 advantage on the board.

At Lebanon Valley College - Won 71-64

The Greyhounds got back to .500 in the Commonwealth Conference with a 71-64 upset victory at Lebanon Valley College. Moravian is now 4-4 in the Commonwealth Conference and 12-7 on the season. The victory also moved Moravian head coach Jim Walker within one win of 300 victories as the Greyhounds' coach. Moravian held a 34-32 lead at halftime. Senior guard Doug Spadt led the Greyhounds with 15 points. Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski had 14 points and five rebounds in the games while sophomore guard Steve Weiler had ten points. Junior forward Ken Greb led the Greyhounds with seven rebounds and he added nine points and three blocked shots. Sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak added six assists and four rebounds in the victory. Junior guard Kevin Hall had eight points off the bench while senior forward Mike Frew added seven points.

Vs. Susquehanna University - Lost 81-68

Moravian dropped an 81-68 decision to Susquehanna University to finish the first half of the Commonwealth Conference season with a 3-4 mark and in fifth place. The Greyhounds shot just 36 percent from the floor (22 of 61) in the game and the squad was just 6 of 21 (29 percent) behind the three-point line. Moravian's one bright spot came at the foul line where the Greyhounds are ranked second in the country. Moravian made 18 of 20 attempts (90 percent). Freshman forward Mike Howell led Moravian with 15 points while freshman forward Brandon Zaleski added 13 points and six rebounds. Moravian was out-rebounded 41-28 in the game. Sophomore guard Steve Weiler contributed 12 points in the loss while sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak had nine points and five assists. Senior forward Mike Frew had seven points in the contest while junior forward Ken Greb had six points and six rebounds.

Vs. Swarthmore College - Won 72-56

The Greyhounds moved head coach Jim Walker two wins away from 300 in his 22 years at Moravian with a 72-56 non-conference victory over Swarthmore College. The Greyhounds earned the victory despite an off shooting night (41.5 percent) by out-rebounding the Garnet 46-27. Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski was one of two Greyhounds in double figures with 25 points. Zaleski hit 11 of 14 field goals and grabbed seven rebounds in the win. Junior guard Kevin Hall came off the bench to score 12 points and grab four rebounds. Junior forward Ken Greb was held scoreless in the game but he pulled down a team high nine rebounds in the game. Senior forward Mike Frew had eight points and seven rebounds while sophomore guard Steve Weiler contributed eight points and six boards. Weiler had three assists in the game while sophomore Kevin Burke dished out a team high four assists while playing for sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak, who sat out the second half with an injury.  Senior guard Doug Spadt contributed seven points and three assists for the Hounds.

Vs. Juniata College - Won 86-72

Moravian got back to .500 in the Commonwealth Conference with an 86-72 victory over Juniata College. The Greyhounds are 3-3 in the Commonwealth Conference with one game left in the first half of the season. The Greyhounds connected on 56 percent of their shots in the game (31 of 55) and 59 percent behind the three-point arc (13 of 22). Moravian, the second ranked free throw shooting team in the nation, had another hot day from the foul line hitting 84.6 percent of their attempts (11 of 13). Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski had a game high 24 points and seven rebounds for the Greyhounds while sophomore guard Steve Weiler had 15 points. Senior guard Doug Spadt was a third Moravian player in double figures with 13 points while junior guard Kevin Hall added nine points of the bench. Junior forward Ken Greb had eight points and five rebounds in the game. Moravian had eight different players make a three-pointer in the win. The victory moved head coach Jim Walker within three of 300 in his career at Moravian.

At Widener University - Lost 80-57

The Greyhounds dropped an 80-57 loss to defending Commonwealth Conference champion Widener University. Moravian shot 44.4 percent from the floor in the game (24 of 54) while the Pioneers hit a torrid 61.7 percent of their shots (29 of 47). The Greyhounds, one of the top five free throw shooting teams in the nation, hit just seven of 15 free throws in the game (46.7 percent). Widener was also hot behind the three-point line, connecting on 10 of 14 attempts (71.4 percent). Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski and senior guard Doug Spadt each scored 14 points for the Greyhounds. Senior forward Mike Frew scored ten points in the loss while junior forward Ken Greb added a team high ten rebounds to go along with eight points.

Vs. Delaware Valley College - Won 64-58

Moravian equaled its win total from the 2000-01 season with its ninth victory of the season in a 64-58 non-conference win over Delaware Valley College. The Greyhounds had to come from behind for the second straight game, trailing 21-10 with 8:22 to play in the first half. Moravian shot 47.8 percent (22 of 46) from the floor and 84.2 percent at the foul line (16 of 19) in the win. The Greyhounds had a balanced scoring attack with just two players in double figures, sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak had a team high 14 points while junior forward Ken Greb added ten points. Greb led Moravian with five rebounds. Sophomore guard Steve Weiler had nine points in the contest while freshman forward Brandon Zaleski added eight points for the Greyhounds.

Vs. Messiah College - Won 76-72

The Greyhounds bounced back from a 44-34 halftime deficit to earn a 76-72 Commonwealth Conference victory over Messiah College.  Moravian evens its Commonwealth record at 2-2 with the win.  The Greyhounds had four players in double figures led by 16 points from junior forward Ken Greb and freshman forward Brandon Zaleski.  Sophomore guard Kevin Wyers added 13 points with four three-pointers while sophomore guard Steve Weiler contributed 11 points.  Greb led the Greyhounds with seven rebounds while Weiler had eight assists.  Sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak had five assists and three steals in the victory. 

At Elizabethtown College - Lost 106-82

Moravian dropped its first Commonwealth Conference contest of the new year, falling to #12 Elizabethtown College, 106-82 on the road.  The Blue Jays jumped out quick on the Greyhounds and led 29-15 just ten minutes into the game and 57-34 at halftime.  Elizabethtown shot 62.9 percent from the floor (44 of 70) while the Greyhounds shot 45.5 percent (25 of 55).  Moravian did connect on 23 of 25 free throws in the game (92.0 percent) Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski led the Greyhounds with 19 points and he added seven rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots.  Junior guard Kevin Hall contributed 17 points off the bench with three three-pointers.  Sophomore guards Steve Weiler and Kevin Wyers each had 11 points in the game with Weiler leading Moravian on the boards with nine and he had a team high four assists. 

Vs. Salisbury (MD) University in Greyhound Rock Classic - Won 85-69

The Greyhounds won the consolation game of the 24th Annual Greyhound Rock Classic with an 85-69 victory over Salisbury (MD) University.  Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led all scorers in the game with 29 points and he added a team high eight rebounds in the win.  Sophomore guard Steve Weiler chipped in 20 points for the Greyhounds while senior forward Mike Frew had ten points.  Sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak ran the Greyhound offense with seven assists and he had four steals. 

Vs. Dickinson College in Greyhound Rock Classic - Lost 73-65

Moravian dropped its second straight decision and its first of the new year in the first round of the 24th Annual Greyhound Rock Classic with a 73-65 loss to Dickinson College.  For the first time since 1992, the Greyhounds will not be playing in the championship game of their own tournament.  Moravian will play Salisbury (MD) University, a 65-59 loser to FDU-Madison.  In the game with Dickinson, the Greyhounds trailed most of the way, taking their first of two one-point leads in the game at 51-50 with 8:17 to play in the second half.  Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski led the Greyhounds with 15 points and nine rebounds while sophomore guard Steve Weiler had 13 points, all in the second half, before fouling out.  Junior guard Kevin Hall scored ten points off the bench in his first action of the season due to an injury.  Senior guard Doug Spadt contributed nine points while freshman forward Mike Howell had five rebounds. 

Vs. Lebanon Valley College - Lost 67-66 (ot)

The Greyhounds allowed another double-digit (49-35 with 15:22 to play) second half lead to slip away, falling to Lebanon Valley College, 67-66 in overtime in Commonwealth Conference action.  The overtime contest was the Greyhounds fifth of the season in nine games.  Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski led all scorers with 20 points and he had nine rebounds for the Greyhounds.  Moravian was playing its second straight game with out senior forward Mike Frew and junior forward Ken Greb, who are out with ankle injuries.  Sophomore guard Steve Weiler tossed in 16 points for the Greyhounds while sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak had 11 points in the game.  Weiler nailed a 35-foot three-pointer at the buzzer in overtime but the Greyhounds needed four points to force another overtime.

At Albright College - Won 83-80 (ot)

For the fourth time in eight games this season, Moravian needed overtime and for the third time, the Greyhounds were on the winning end of the overtime session, defeating Albright College, 83-80 in the Commonwealth Conference opener.  Moravian led by 13 points at halftime and by 21 points with 11:59 remaining in the regulation before the Lions came back to tie the game in the final 30 seconds.  Sophomore guard Steve Weiler paced the Greyhounds with a career high 27 points and a career best ten rebounds.  Weiler was 12 of 18 from the free throw line in the game, making more free throws than the entire Albright team attempted in the contest.  Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski tossed in 19 points and tied his career high with a game high 11 rebounds to lead Moravian to a 44-28 advantage on the boards.  Freshman forward Mike Howell, making his first collegiate start for an injured Ken Greb, netted a career high 16 points and he added eight rebounds.  Sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak contributed eight points with four assists and three steals.  Senior guard Doug Spadt added four steals and two blocked shots.

Vs. Muhlenberg College - Won 74-68

The Greyhounds made 18 of 22 free throws in the second half to turn a 38-37 halftime deficit into a 74-68 victory over rival Muhlenberg College in non-conference action.  Moravian led by as many as 19 points (65-46 with 9:11 left) in the second half before the Mules cut the game back to three points at 65-62 with 4:30 to play.  For the second straight contest, freshman forward Brandon Zaleski led the Greyhounds with 24 points and he was 13 of 14 at the charity stripe.  Zaleski also added seven rebounds as Moravian out-rebounded Muhlenberg, 34-31.  Sophomore guard Steve Weiler was the only other Moravian player in double figures with 19 points and he had a team best four steals.  Junior forward Ken Greb grabbed a game high nine rebounds and he scored six points with three steals.  Sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak added eight points while freshman forward Mike Howell had seven points.  Senior guard Doug Spadt contributed six rebounds in the win, which was Moravian's fifth straight at home over Muhlenberg.

At Wilkes University - Won 88-82

Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski scored a career high 36 points and he added seven rebounds to lead the Greyhounds to an 88-82 non-conference victory over nationally ranked Wilkes University (24th this week in D3Hoops.com poll).  Zaleski tossed in 25 of his game high 36 total in the second half.  After falling behind early, 4-0, Moravian came back an took a 11-8 lead and was in control most of the rest of the game including leading the final 14:37 of the game after a three-pointer by Zaleski.  Sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak scored 15 points for Moravian, tying his career high and he added four assists while junior forward Ken Greb had 14 points and seven rebounds.  The Greyhounds had their best shooting day of the season, connecting on 60 percent of their field goals (33 of 55).  Wilkes senior forward Ron McIntyre led the Colonels with 23 points and ten rebounds as Wilkes held a 33-24 advantage on the boards.

At Drew University - Won 78-70 (ot)

For the second straight game and the third time in five games this season, the Greyhounds needed overtime to determine the winner of a game with Moravian earning a 78-70 non-conference victory over Drew University.  The Greyhounds trailed or were tied the entire game until the first basket of overtime when junior forward Ken Greb made a lay-up for a 61-59 Moravian lead.  The biggest key in the game came at the foul line where the Greyhounds connected on 31 of 41 attempts (75.6 percent) while the Rangers were just 10 of 23 (43.5 percent).  Moravian was nine of 11 in the overtime session at the foul line.  Greb led Moravian with 20 points and he also had a team high 12 rebounds.  Freshman guard Brian Mooney had the best night of his young career with his first collegiate double-double of 17 points and ten rebounds.  Mooney added four steals while freshman forward Mike Howell also scored a career high with ten points and Howell added three boards.  Sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak led Moravian with six assists and four steals while senior guard Doug Spadt added eight points and five rebounds. 

Vs. University of Scranton - Lost 87-84 (ot)

University of Scranton junior guard Dan Loftus hit a running one-handed halfcourt shot with no time left on the clock to lift the Royals to a 87-84 overtime victory over Moravian in non-conference action.  The Greyhounds had tied with three seconds left in overtime on a jumper in the lane by junior forward Ken Greb.  After Scranton took a timeout, Loftus took the inbounds pass in front of the scorers table and dribbled just inside halfcourt along the sideline before letting his shot go. The Greyhounds, who have played two overtime games in four contests this season, let a 12-point lead slip away in the second half despite shooting 52.8 percent for the game and 59 percent in the second half.  Moravian was up 54-42 with 14:05 to play before the Royals, who have played three overtime games in five contests this season, began to chip away.  Scranton took its first lead of the night with 4:41 to play, 69-68, on a lay-up by Loftus.  Scranton had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation but Moravian freshman forward Brandon Zaleski blocked a shot with no time on the clock.  Zaleski had a career night for the Greyhounds, leading the squad with a career best 22 points and he also had a career high 11 rebounds in the loss.  Greb added 21 points and seven rebounds for the Greyhounds while sophomore guard Steve Weiler had 12 points, five assists and five steals.  Junior guard Willie Reynolds added 11 points while sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak contributed six points, five rebounds and four assists.  Senior forward Mike Frew and senior guard Doug Spadt each added six points in the game with Frew dishing out four assists.  Freshman guard Ryan Rogan of Scranton led all scorers with a career high 35 points and he tied a Scranton record with seven three-pointers in the contest.  Loftus added 23 points.

At DeSales University - Lost 70-55

Moravian dropped its first game of the 2001-02 season, falling at DeSales University, 70-55.  Moravian fell behind by 11 points at halftime and trailed by as many as 21 points in the second half.  The Greyhounds shot just 42 percent from the floor and 64.7 percent from the foul line in the game while committing 22 turnovers.  Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski led Moravian with 15 points and seven rebounds while sophomore guard Steve Weiler was the only over player in double figures, netting ten points.  Junior forward Ken Greb added seven rebounds, six points and three assists while senior forward Mike Frew had eight points in the loss. 

At Muhlenberg College at Scotty Wood Tournament - Won 88-75

For the first time since 1987, the last time Moravian won the Scotty Wood Tournament, the Greyhounds have opened the season with a 2-0 record, defeating rival Muhlenberg College, 88-75, in the Championship Game of the 20th Annual Scotty Wood Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg.  The Greyhounds jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back in the game, leading by as many as 12 in the first half before a taking a 35-27 lead into the locker room.  Muhlenberg did have the lead down to two points with 10:35 left in the first half.  Moravian extended its lead as big as 17 points in the second half and the closest Muhlenberg would get would be eight points, 71-63, with 3:51 to play.

Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski, the Scotty Wood Tournament's Most Valuable Player, and sophomore guard Steve Weiler each tossed in a career high 22 points in the game.  Junior forward Ken Greb, a member of the All-Tournament Team, had 16 points in the contest while sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak, also a member of the All-Tournament Team, had 15 points and four rebounds.  The Greyhounds leading rebounder in the contest was senior forward Mike Frew with six rebounds.  Moravian held a 29-28 advantage on the boards and the main keys to the Greyhound victory was a 27 of 30 performance from the free throw line, including nine of ten in the final minute, and just 11 turnovers while Muhlenberg committed 21 turnovers.  The Mules were 13 of 13 from the foul line and Mark Lesko led Muhlenberg with 26 points and seven rebounds.

Vs. Baldwin Wallace College at Scotty Wood Tournament - Won 94-89 (ot)

The Greyhounds needed overtime to win their season opening game, defeating Baldwin-Wallace (OH) College, 94-89 in overtime in the first round of the 20th Scotty Wood Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College.  The Greyhounds trailed 32-21 with 7:45 to play in the first half before tying the score at 42-42 at the intermission.  Sophomore guard Steve Weiler hit a three-pointer with two seconds left in the half to tie the score.  Moravian fell behind as many as seven points in the second half and led by as many as five points.  Junior forward Ken Greb followed up a missed free throw by freshman forward Brandon Zaleski with 35 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the contest at 82-82.Moravian fell behind by four points early in the overtime session before junior guard Willie Reynolds scored nine of his career high 20 points in the final 2:55 of overtime.  Reynolds was six-for-six from both the floor and the foul line in the game and two-for-two behind the three-point line.  Greb led the Greyhounds with a career best 21 points and he added seven rebounds while Zaleski had 13 points and six boards in his collegiate debut.  Senior guard Doug Spadt contributed 11 points for Moravian while senior forward Mike Frew had ten points and seven rebounds.  Sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak added eight points and six rebounds while Weiler connected for nine points.
