2001-02 Statistics

The Moravian College men’s basketball team came within one game of earning its first postseason berth since the 1996-97 season this past winter as the squad posted an overall record of 14-11 and a 6-8 slate in the Commonwealth conference.

Head coach Jim Walker earned his 300th career win at Moravian on January 30th in an 86-74 victory over Albright College.  Walker has a record of 301-250 in 22 years at Moravian and an overall coaching mark of 316-260 in 23 seasons.

The Greyhounds did lead the nation in free throw shooting this season with a percentage of 79.5, connecting on 407 of 512 attempts during the season.  Moravian had a four-game winning streak in December and played five overtime games in its first nine contests, winning three of those games.

Freshman forward Brandon Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS) led Moravian in scoring with an average of 19.1 points per game.  Zaleski was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star Second Team and he was also the Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year.  He averaged 6.6 rebounds per game and led Moravian with 17 blocked shots and a 59.9 field goal shooting percentage, which ranks in the top 25 nationally.  Zaleski also contributed 32 steals and 24 assists and was tops among the starters in free throw shooting at 83.1 percent on 111 attempts.

Junior forward Ken Greb (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional HS) netted 11.5 points per contest and he led the Greyhounds with an average of 6.7 rebounds per game.  Greb had 41 assists, 30 steals and 12 blocked shots while shooting 49.7 percent from the floor.

Sophomore guard Steve Weiler (Edgewater Park, NJ/Burlington City HS) was a third Greyhound to score in double figures this season, averaging 11.1 points per game.  Weiler led Moravian with 35 three-pointers and he was second on the squad with 61 assists.  He also contributed 69 rebounds and 38 assists.

In his final season, senior guard Doug Spadt (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS) netted 6.6 points per game and he added 75 rebounds, 41 steals, 40 assists and 17 three-pointers.  Spadt was also on the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Academic Team for the second straight season.  Senior forward Mike Frew (Glen Ridge, NJ/Glen Ridge HS) added 5.6 points per contest with 73 rebounds and 26 assists.

Running the Greyhound offense on the floor was sophomore guard Lucas Malishchak (Wanamie, PA/Nanticoke HS), who was a member of the MAC All-Academic Team.  Malishchak led Moravian with 84 assists and 45 steals while contributing 6.5 points per game.  He also added 45 rebounds and 16 three pointers.

Junior guard Kevin Hall (Mountain Top, PA/Pocono Mountain HS) missed the first half of the season with an injury but did return to contribute 6.6 points per game off the bench.  Hall had 18 rebounds, 13 three-pointers and ten steals in his limited action and he led Moravian at the foul line, making all 24 of his attempts during the season.

Sophomore guard Kevin Wyers (Hamilton Square, NJ/Notre Dame HS) contributed 4.8 points per contest as a reserve and he also had 36 rebounds, 16 three-pointers and 15 assists.  Freshman forward Mike Howell (Floral Park, NY/Holy Cross HS) scored 91 points and added 43 rebounds, 18 assists and 16 steals in his debut season for Moravian.

Junior guard Willie Reynolds (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS), a member of the MAC All-Academic Team, contributed73 points, 25 rebounds and 17 assists as a reserve this winter.  Reynolds, who opened the season with a career high 20 points in an overtime victory over Baldwin-Wallace (OH) College, was second on the Moravian squad with an 89.7 percent free throw percentage.

The Greyhounds will return eight players for next season including all three players that averaged in double-figures in 2001-02 as the squad looks to return to the postseason and challenge for the Commonwealth Conference Championship.
