The Moravian men’s basketball team earned its first postseason berth since the 1996-1997 season as the team posted a 16-11 overall record and competed in the Commonwealth Conference Playoffs. The Greyhounds also played in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Quarterfinals for the first time since 1984.
Head coach Jim Walker has a record of 317-261 in 23 years at Moravian College and an overall coaching mark of 332-272 in his 24th season as a coach.
The Greyhounds were led by sophomore Brandon Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS), who was named to the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year, Commonwealth All-Conference First Team, Lehigh Valley Small College Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, DIII News Honorable Mention All-American, National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District Middle Atlantic Region First Team, and the D3hoops.com All Region Second Team. He led the team in scoring and rebounding with 18.2 and 7.5, respectively and in blocked shots with 11. Zaleski also added 34 steals and 22 assists. After completing his second season with the Greyhounds, Zaleski only needs 31 points to reach 1,000 points.
Senior Ken Greb (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional HS) was second on the team with 11.8 points and 6.6 rebounds. He also contributed 49 assists, 38 steals, and nine blocked shots. Junior Steve Weiler (Edgewater Park, NJ/Burlington City HS) led the Greyhounds in three-point field goals with 45 while contributing 11.6 points and 2.7 rebounds to go along with 52 assists and 41 steals.
Junior Kevin Wyers (Hamilton Square, NJ/Notre Dame) added 7.1 points, 2.7 rebounds, 26 assists, and 22 steals. Freshman Geoff Wendel (Sparta, NJ/Sparta HS) netted 5.6 points and contributed 3.1 rebounds, 15 assists, and 13 steals, while senior Willie Reynolds (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) contributed 5.4 points, 59 rebounds, 52 assists, and 18 steals.
Junior Lucas Malishchak (Wanamie, PA/Nanticoke HS) led the offense with a team high 107 assists, to go along with 91 points, 64 rebounds, and 40 steals. Freshman Chris Betley (Lenape, NJ/Lenape HS) added 89 points, 32 rebounds, 12 assists, and seven steals. Junior Kevin Burke (Turnersville, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) netted 40 points and had 15 rebounds, 26 assists, and 13 steals.
Sophomore Andy Fisher (Hatboro, PA/Hatboro-Horsham HS) had 18 points, eight rebounds, and 12 assists, while sophomore Mike Howell (Floral Park, NY/Holy Cross HS) contributed 54 points, 30 rebounds, eight assists, and seven steals before ending his season with an injury. Freshman Steve Wenderfer (Chester, NJ/Mendham HS) added 13 points and four rebounds before an injury ended the season early.
Freshman Ed Reid (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl HS) contributed 19 points and 13 rebounds, while classmate Zach Zsilavecz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) added 15 points. Freshman Adam Kaucher (Kintersville, PA/Palisades HS) had four rebounds and one point and freshman Tyler Tripucka (Glen Ridge, NJ/Glen Ridge HS) had five points for the Greyhounds.
Moravian is slated to return 14 of its 16 varsity players next season as the Greyhounds look to go further in the postseason.
