Vs. John Jay College in NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament First Round Game - Lost 80-74     Boxscore

Senior forward Hakeem Kased scored seven of his ten points during a 13-0 second half run to lead John Jay College to an 80-74 come-from-behind victory over Moravian College in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament in Johnston Hall. With the Bloodhounds trailing 59-53 with 10:21 to go in the game, Kased hit on a three-point play to start the 13-0 run that saw John Jay take a 66-59 lead on lay-up by senior forward Alex Valerio with 6:31 remaining in the contest.

The Bloodhounds, making their first-ever NCAA Division III National Championship appearance on the basketball court and just the third in school history for any sport, will now travel to defending NCAA Division III National Champion and top-ranked Amherst College for a second round game on Saturday, March 8th. John Jay has won five straight games to improve to 14-15.

On the other hand, Moravian lost its fourth straight to end the season at 18-9 overall. The Greyhounds, who were making their second NCAA Tournament appearance and first in 25 years, also finish the season one victory shy of tying the school record. The Greyhounds have lost nine straight postseason games, having not won since a 71-62 win over Dickinson College in the Middle Atlantic Conference Playoffs of the 1989-90 season. Moravian is 0-3 in NCAA Tournament action and dropped its final three games of the season in Johnston Hall after opening up 11-0 at home this year.

Against the Bloodhounds, Moravian jumped out to a 4-0 lead on baskets by senior guard Ryan Miller and freshman guard Maurice Young only to see John Jay tied the score on a follow-up dunk by sophomore forward Vaughn Mason. Mason would give the Bloodhounds their first lead of the game, 7-6, at the 14:18 mark of the first half on a three-pointer. The Greyhounds retook the lead, 11-9, on a three-pointer by senior forward Eric Whitman with 12:30 to go in the first half.

John Jay would briefly retake the lead, 15-14, on a pair of free throws by senior guard Vincent Calderon before Moravian took the lead again, 17-15, on a Miller three-pointer at 10:17. The game would either be tied or the Greyhounds had the advantage until the 2:13 mark when a jumper by John Jay junior guard Godfrey Mascall put the Bloodhounds up 33-32.

John Jay headed to the locker room with a 35-33 lead after shooting 14 of 32 from the floor (43.8 percent), two of ten on three-pointers and five of six at the foul line in the first 20 minutes of the game. The Bloodhounds also had a 22-15 advantage on the boards in the first half. Moravian was just ten of 28 (35.7 percent) from the field in the first half, four of six on three-pointers and nine of ten at the foul line in the first half with eight turnovers. John Jay committed ten first half turnovers.

The Greyhounds came out of the locker room and needed two possessions to take the lead back with senior forward Mark Franzyshen hitting a lay-up and Miller connecting on a follow-up jumper to give Moravian a 37-35 lead with 17:53 to play. John Jay would take a 40-39 lead on a three-pointer by senior guard Emilio Gomez with 15:55 to play only to see the Greyhounds retake the lead on a lay-up by freshman guard Steve Siracusa two possessions later.

Siracusa would score on a fast break lay-up after a steal by Miller to give the Greyhounds a 53-47 lead, their largest of the game, with 12:31 to play, and Moravian would lead by six points again, 59-63, at the 10:21 mark after a full court dribble and drive by senior forward Chris Earley. Ten seconds later, Kased hit on his three-point play to start the John Jay 13-0 run and flip a six-point deficit into a seven-point lead for the Bloodhounds.

Moravian finally broke the run with a jumper by Earley with 5:44 to play, pulling the Greyhounds within 66-61. However, the Greyhounds would get no closer than four points the rest of the way with John Jay eventually pushing the lead to eight points, 79-71, its largest of the contest, after a pair of Valerio free throws with 40 seconds to play. The Bloodhounds were five of six from the charity stripe in the final 53 seconds of the game to seal their first-ever NCAA Tournament win.

John Jay shot the ball very well from the field in the second half, connecting on 15 of 29 field goal attempts (51.7 percent), one of two three-pointers and 14 of 22 free throws in the final 20 minutes. The Bloodhounds also finished the contest with a 40-39 edge in rebounds while both teams committed 15 turnovers in the game. Moravian shot the ball a little better in the second half, making 15 of 37 field goal attempts (40.5 percent), four of 15 three-pointers and a perfect seven-for-seven at the foul line.

The Bloodhounds had four players in double figures, all coming off of the bench as John Jay's reserves scored 52 points in the contest. Valerio had a game high 16 points while Mascall and junior guard Miguel Garcia each tossed in 12 points for the Bloodhounds. Mascall just missed a double-double with nine assists to go along with five rebounds and four steals while Garcia had three boards. Kased netted ten points and did have a double-double with a game high ten rebounds to go along with four assists.

Vaughn led the John Jay starters with eight points and five rebounds while sophomore forward Chris Jaeger had seven points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. Senior forward Robert Pierce had six points for the Bloodhounds while Gomez had five points.

Moravian also had four players in double figures with Franzyshen netting a team high 16 points in his final collegiate game to go along with six rebounds and two assists. Earley had a double-double in his final career game with 13 points and ten boards to go with four assists, two steals and two blocked shots while Miller ha 12 points, five rebounds and three assists in final game. Miller finishes his career with 1,089 points, 15th in school history, and a school record 160 career three-pointers. Miller also completed his career with school record for three-pointers attempted with 435 and free throw percentage at 85.7 percent (191 of 223).

Freshman forward Chris Cullen tossed in ten points off of the bench for the Greyhounds while Whitman and Young each scored nine points. Whitman also grabbed six rebounds in the final game of his career while Siracusa had five points and five rebounds. Senior guard Chris Bays dished out three assists in his final collegiate game.

The second seeded Greyhounds dropped a 79-78 decision to third seed The University of Scranton in a Landmark Conference Semifinal in Johnston Hall. Moravian suffered its third straight loss after moving within one victory of tying the school record for wins, and the Greyhounds, playing at home in the postseason for the first time since the 1995-96 season, dropped their eighth straight postseason game since a 71-62 win over Dickinson College in the Middle Atlantic Conference Playoffs of the 1989-90 season. Moravian would score first against Scranton on a jumper by senior forward Mark Franzyshen in the paint, and the Greyhounds eventually pushed out to a 9-4 lead on a jumper by senior forward Chris Earley in the lane at the 17:06 mark. The Royals pulled within a point at 11-10 on a three-pointer by junior forward Paul Biagioli with 14:29 remaining in the first half. Moravian would then score nine straight points, finished off on a jumper by sophomore forward Eric Weaver, to pull ahead, 20-10, the Greyhounds' first double-digit lead of the night, with 12:06 until the intermission. Scranton would close in again, this time to three points on another Biagioli three-pointer to set the score at 27-24 at the 7:08 mark of the first half. The Greyhounds would push their lead back to eight points, 33-25; on a lay-up by freshman forward Chris Cullen with 4:14 to go in the first half only to see the Royals pull within a point, 35-34, on a lay-up by Scranton freshman guard Zach Ashworth with just 1:18 remaining in the first half. Moravian senior guard Ryan Miller would connect on a jumper with 44 seconds left in the half to send the Greyhounds to the locker room with a 37-34 lead. The Greyhounds shot the ball well in the first 20 minutes of the game, connecting on 15 of 27 field goal attempts (55.6 percent), two of 11 three-pointers and five of eight free throws. Moravian also had a 16-13 edge in rebounds in the first half. Scranton made 12 of 25 field goals, five of nine three-pointers and five of seven free throws in the first 20 minutes. The Greyhounds started the second half with a three-point play by Franzyshen to push their lead back to six points, 40-34. Moravian would continue to hold onto the lead and eventually push the lead to double digits at ten points on three different occasions. The Royals first lead of the game came at the 1:34 mark when Scranton senior guard Randy Arnold stripped Young in the backcourt and scored on a breakaway lay-up for a 73-72 lead. Moravian would tie the contest at 75-75 with 53 seconds remaining when Miller connected on his school record 158th career three-pointer. However, Biagioli made a lay-up with 25 seconds to go and Arnold hit a pair of free throws with just 2.1 seconds remaining to give the Royals a 79-75 lead. Scranton also had four players in double figures with Bicknell and Ashworth each scoring 20 points. Bicknell had a double-double with a game high 13 rebounds while Ashworth added four rebounds and three assists. Moravian dropped its first home game of the season, falling to The University of Scranton, 82-60, in a Landmark Conference regular season finale in Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds had won their first 11 home games of the season. The two teams will meet again in Johnston Hall on Wednesday, February 27th at 7:00 p.m. in the Landmark Conference Semifinals as the Greyhounds are the second seed while the Royals are the third seed. The other semifinal has top seed Susquehanna University hosting fourth seed Juniata College. The Royals jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the Greyhounds on a three-pointer by junior forward Paul Biagioli at the 19:33 mark and Scranton would lead the entire way. Moravian's first bucket was a lay-up by senior forward Eric Whitman to pull the Greyhounds within 3-2 at 18:58, but the Royals went on a 17-2 run to build a 20-4 lead at the 14:12 mark on a three-pointer by junior guard Ryan FitzPatrick. Moravian would knock the Scranton lead to nine twice in the latter part of the first half; however, Scranton would build a 17-point edge, 36-19 on a three-point play by freshman guard Zach Ashworth, and head to the locker room with a 38-23 lead. The Royals were 13 of 27 from the floor, five of ten behind the three-point line and a perfect seven-for-seven at the foul line in the first 20 minutes of the game, and Scranton had an 18-17 edge in rebounds while committing just six turnovers. The Greyhounds dropped an 85-79 decision at The Catholic University of America in Moravian's final Landmark Conference road game of the regular season. The Greyhounds remained in a tie for first place in the Landmark Conference with Susquehanna University losing at Drew University and Juniata College's win at the United States Merchant Marine Academy forcing a three-way tie. The loss also snapped Moravian's five-game winning streak and kept the team one victory shy of tying the program record for wins in a season. Moravian jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Catholic with 18:06 to play in the first half on a lay-up by senior forward Eric Whitman and a three-pointer by senior forward Chris Earley. The Greyhounds would lead 8-2 on a three-pointer by senior guard Ryan Miller with 17:35 remaining. The three-pointer by Miller tied David Jordan's career mark of 150. After that point of the first half, there were seven lead changes and six ties as the Cardinal eventually pulled ahead by four points, 30-26, with 3:08 remaining before halftime. Catholic headed to the locker room with a 39-36 halftime lead after shooting 18 of 34 from the field, two of four on three-pointers and one of three at the foul line. The Cardinals had a 20-15 edge in rebounds in the first 20 minutes while both teams had nine turnovers in the first half. Moravian earned its first postseason appearance in five years and moved into a tie for first place in the Landmark Conference with its fifth straight win, a 78-71 victory at Goucher College. The Greyhounds' victory, their 18th of the season, coupled with Susquehanna University's loss at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, forced a tie atop the Landmark Conference standings with just two regular season games remaining. Moravian is now just a win shy of tying the school record for wins in a season. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 5-0 lead on the Gophers with a lay-up by senior forward Chris Earley and a three-point play by senior forward Mark Franzyshen at the 17:15 mark. Moravian would push its lead to 12 points, 16-4, on a three-pointer by senior guard Ryan Miller with 13:57 remaining in the first half. With Moravian leading 18-8, Goucher ran off seven straight points to pull within three points, 18-15, with 11:11 to play before the intermission. The Gophers would continue to keep the game close, eventually tying the contest at 31-31 on a lay-up by Amir Hakim with 2:59 remaining in the first half. Marcus Cotton would put Goucher ahead for the first time with a lay-up at the 2:00 mark. The Greyhounds captured their fourth straight Landmark Conference victory and moved to 11-0 at home in Johnston Hall with a 73-53 win over Drew University. The victory is Moravian's 17th of the season, the most for the program since the 1995-96 team went 17-8, and just two victories shy of the school record of 19 wins. Greyhound senior guard Ryan Miller became the 18th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points on a free throw with 7:59 remaining in the contest. Miller had 20 points in the game and now has 1,006 points in his career. Miller also connected on four three-pointers to improve his career total to 146, third in school history, just shy of the school record of 150. Neither team scored for the first 3:35 before Moravian jumped out to a 9-0 lead finished off by Miller's first three-pointer of the game at the 15:42 mark of the first half. The Greyhounds would lead the entire game including a pair of 16 point leads in the first half, the second time at 31-15 with 5:17 until the intermission on a pair of free throws by senior forward Mark Franzyshen. Moravian headed to the locker room with a 39-27 halftime lead after shooting 14 of 34 from the floor (41.2 percent), four of ten behind the three-point line and a perfect seven-for-seven at the foul line in the first 20 minutes. Moravian won its third straight Landmark Conference game and remained undefeated in Johnston Hall this season at 10-0 with an 84-52 victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Landmark Conference action. The Greyhounds have won 16 games this season. The last time Moravian won 16 games was during the 2002-03 season, and the school record is 19 wins in a season. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead on baskets by freshman guard Maurice Young and senior forward Mark Franzyshen and would hold the lead the entire game. Moravian pushed the lead into double digits for the remainder of the contest on a jumper by senior guard Ryan Miller, which gave the Greyhounds a 24-13 edge with 4:22 left in the first half. The win was Moravian's ninth straight, equaling the longest streak for the program since a nine-game winning streak during the 1975-76 season. It was also the Greyhounds' 13th tournament title in the 30-year history of the tournament. Moravian has a 39-21 record in Greyhound Starters Classic tournament games. Richard Stockton scored quickly to open the game and would have an 8-2 lead at the 16:36 mark on a jumper by senior forward Jon Greene. The Greyhounds took their first lead of the game with 10:52 remaining in the first half, 13-11, on a three-pointer by senior guard Chris Bays. The contest went back-and-forth for the remainder of the first half with six lead changes and four ties. Moravian headed to the locker room with a 27-24 lead after a jumper by senior forward Mark Franzyshen with 1:02 before the intermission. The Greyhounds will battle Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, a 72-50 winner over Lebanon Valley College in the other first round game, in the title contest as Moravian goes for its second straight and 13th overall tournament championship. The victory was the Greyhounds' ninth in a row, the longest streak in the program history since a nine-game winning streak during the 1976-77 season. Neumann scored the first points of the game before Moravian took a lead on a three-pointer by senior forward Eric Whitman at the 18:37 mark. The Knights would have one other lead, 12-11 on a three-pointer by junior guard Mike Hitchens at 13:57. The Greyhounds took the lead for good with 12:25 to play when freshman guard Maurice Young scored on a lay-up after a steal to give Moravian a 13-12 lead. The Greyhounds would push their lead to double figures at 11 points, 34-23 with 1:50 remaining in the first half on a free throw by senior forward Mark Franzyshen. The Greyhounds returned to action after 23 days off with their seventh consecutive victory, a 67-52 non-conference win over rival Muhlenberg College in Johnston Hall. The seven-game winning streak is Moravian's first since the 1982-83 season, prior to all of the current team members being born. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game and led 24-8 with 9:11 left in the first half. However, Moravian went cold from the field and scored just four points the rest of the half including no points in the final 5:14 while Muhlenberg went on an 18-4 run to pull within 28-26 at halftime. The Greyhounds were nine of 23 (39.1 percent) from the floor, three of 11 behind the three-point line and seven of eight at the foul line in the first 20 minutes while the Mules were also nine for 23 from the field, three of eight at the foul line and five of eight at the foul line. The game was close early and tied at 5-5 before Moravian posted a 9-0 run for a 14-5 lead with 14:31 remaining in the first half. The Greyhounds jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead with 17:53 left in the first half but DeSales responded to take an 8-7 lead at the 14:56 mark. The teams would trade leads with Moravian eventually taking a 19-18 lead with 8:54 before halftime, and the Greyhounds would push that lead to five points twice, the final time at 27-22 with 4:44 left on the clock. DeSales would tie the game at 27-27 at the 3:42 mark before Moravian took a 29-27 lead with 3:13 remaining in the first half. The Greyhounds, who won their first season-opening game since the 2003-04 season, advance to the championship game to play Western Connecticut State University, which defeated Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 83-77, in the other first round game.
