1999-2000 Review

The 1999-2000 Greyhounds, under the direction of head coach Jim Walker for the 19th season, finished with a 10-14 overall mark for the second season in a row. The Greyhounds improved their MAC Commonwealth Conference record from 4-10 last year to a 6-8 record this season and the squad was in the hunt for a spot in the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs until its final game of the season.

Walker has posted a 263-216 record in his 19 years at the helm for the Greyhounds and he scored his 275th career win this season. Walker’s overall career record is 278-226 in 20 seasons.

Leading the team this season was junior guard David Jordan (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant). He led the team in scoring and three-pointers with 14.2 points per game and 48 three-pointers made during the season. Jordan also had 99 rebounds, 46 assists and 35 steals this winter. Jordan has reached double figures 35 times in his three years at Moravian College and he has a chance to become the 17th Greyhound to score 1,000 points with a total of 673 points heading into his season. In a MAC Commonwealth game versus Albright College this season, Jordan had his career high in points with 27. He was also named to the All-Tournament Team at the Scotty Wood Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College.

Junior forward Chris Hayn (Whitehall/Whitehall) was the team's second leading scorer with 11.7 points per game. Hayn was second on the Greyhound squad with 4.7 rebounds per game while contributing 28 assists and 26 steals. Hayn had a career high of 25 points against Susquehanna University, a game in which he was 10-for-10 from the foul line, while having scored double figures 17 times in three seasons. During the 22nd Annual Greyhound Nike Classic, Hayn was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Senior center Jim O'Rourke (Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) started all 24 games for the ‘Hounds and scored 10.2 points per game. O'Rourke lead the team with 129 rebounds for an average of 5.4 boards a contest and 24 blocked shots. He had a career high rebound of 12 against Widener University and hit double figure points 16 times in his career. O’Rourke also had three double-digit rebound games.

Senior guard Rich Whalen (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) netted 8.2 points per game and lead the team in assists with 92 and steals with 86. Whalen, who added 79 rebounds this winter, had a career high in assists with ten versus University of Scranton. He also seven steals per game four times during the season. He had double figure points 18 times in his four seasons. Whalen was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Scotty Wood Tournament and to the MAC Academic Honor Roll this year.

Sophomore guard Doug Spadt (Emmaus/Emmaus) scored 203 points with an average of 8.5 points. Spadt, who also had 85 rebounds, 43 steals, 27 assists and 14 blocked shots, started 16 games and had a career high of 17 points versus Muhlenberg College. He was also named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll at the All-Tournament Team at the Scotty Wood Tournament.

Senior guard Justin Potts (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) recorded 43 points, 44 assists and 43 boards while seeing action in all 24 games in the final season of his career.

Freshmen forward Ken Greb (Mt. Holly, NJ/Point Pleasant) and guard Kevin Hall (Mountain Top/Pocono Mountain) were excellent contributors off the bench in their debut seasons. Greb had 129 points and 87 rebounds while Hall had 107 points and 27 rebounds. The duo combined for 57 assists and 67 steals while Hall netted 16 three-pointers and led Moravian with a .421 three-point field goal percentage.

Sophomores guard Bruce DeLauder (Reading/Reading Central Catholic) and forward Mike Frew (Glen Ridge, NJ/Glen Ridge) combined for 45 points and 22 rebounds. Junior center Jason Greiger (Ottsville/Palisades), who transferred to Moravian from Northampton Community College, saw action in 22 games and netted 23 points and 26 rebounds.

Senior guard Pete Bilinsky (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), sophomore guard Mike Venanzi (Bethlehem/Saucon Valley) and freshman guard Ryan Gaston (Whitehall/Whitehall) all saw limited action this season with Bilinsky scoring 24 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

With a corp of ten players returning next year, Coach Walker’s squad should again challenge for a spot in the MAC playoffs.
