2003 Review

Under the direction of First-year head coach Amy Endler, the Moravian field hockey team posted a 4-14 record.

Sophomore Stephanie Beitler (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh HS) led the Greyhounds with four goals and two assists for a total of 10 points. Freshman Elyse Jurgen (York, PA/Red Lion HS) was second on the team with two goals and two assists for six points. Freshman Lacie Eschbach (Trappe, PA/Perkiomen Valley HS) contributed two goals and one assist for five points. One of her goals was the game winning goal over Gwynedd-Mercy.

Sophomore Stacee Cupples (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) had a goal and two assists for four total points. Her only goal was the game winner against Albright College. Senior Pam Pike (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen HS) contributed one goal and two assists for four points total. Her only goal was a game winning penalty strike against FDU-Florham. Pike was named to the All-Commonwealth Conference First Team for the 2003 season. Junior Kelly Boone (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg HS) also had 1 goal and 2 assists for four points. Her goal came in a 1-0 win over King’s College.

Rounding out the scoring for the Hounds this season were freshmen Rachel Griffith (Easton, PA/Freedom HS) and Alyse Moyer (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg HS), who each added one goal in their debut seasons.

The key defensive players for the Hounds were senior Alicia Fowler (Easton, PA/Easton HS), sophomore Jill Brinckman (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen HS), and freshman Kim Gialanella (Glenwood, NJ/Vernon Township HS). Fowler contributed one defensive save and Gialanella had three. Also helping out the defense this season was junior Amy Kranchalk (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro HS), who had one defensive save.

Other key players for Coach Endler were freshmen Brittny McKillip (Califon, NJ/Voorhees HS), Caitlin Tozer (Norwood, PA/Friends Central HS), Rebecca DeJulio (Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart HS), Casey Kaptein (Glenwood, NJ/Vernon Township HS), Katie Custer (Pottstown, PA/St. Pius X HS), and Jenna Abramson (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS).

In goal for Moravian was freshman goal keeper Amanda Gaun (Hatboro, PA/Hatboro-Horsham HS). Gaun played all 1285.42 minutes this season and had a 2.72 goals against average, 199 saves, which ranked in the top 20 nationally, and two shutouts. Gaun was name to the All-Commonwealth Conference Second Team during her debut season.

Moravian had four student-athletes named to the 2003 Middle Atlantic Corporation Fall All-Academic Team including Pike, Beitler, Boone and Brinckman.

Coach Endler hopes to have a nucleus of 17 players return for next season as the Greyhounds look to continue their improvement and earn a berth in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs.
