1999 Review

New head coach Martha Kerrick took over a Moravian College field hockey team with 11 returning letterwinners and five returning starters and led the squad to a 3-14 record this season. Despite the losing record, the Lady Greyhounds proved to Kerrick and to opponents that the team has the talent to improve next season.

Moravian lost eight matches this fall by one goal and fell to Middle Atlantic Conference power Messiah College, 1-0 in double overtime. Over the last two seasons, the Lady Greyhounds have been competitive in every match they have played but have suffered 18 losses by one goal and seven losses by two goals.

Junior forward Brooke Dancho (Bethlehem/Freedom HS) led the 1999 squad in scoring with 13 points on five goals and three assists. Dancho, who scored the Lady Greyhounds first and last goals of the season, had two game-winning goals this fall. Sophomore midfielder Elissa Gerstel (Warminster/ William Tennent HS) paced Moravian in goals with six for 12 points. Starting with the Marywood University match, Gerstel scored goals in four straight matches including a pair in a loss to Wilkes University.

Junior forward Chelsea Roberts (Philadelphia/St. Basil HS) added three goals this season including a pair of goals in a 3-1 victory over Marywood. Sophomore midfielder Leslie Siebler (Easton/Wilson HS) netted a pair of goals and added an assist.

Sophomore forward Suzy Wargo (Somerville, NJ/Hillsborough HS) and senior midfielder Nicole Drey (Bethlehem/Northampton HS) each scored a goal for the Lady Greyhounds this season. Drey was named to the MAC Commonwealth All-Star Second Team this year. Wargo also added an assist. Junior midfielder Kelly Pico (Lincoln Park, NJ/Boonton HS) had two assists on the season while sophomore forward Andrea Rafferty (Hellertown/Saucon Valley HS) and freshman midfielder Sayward Green (Woodsboro, MD/Catoctin HS) each had one assist.

Senior Julie Kalbfleisch (Warminster/William Tennent HS) and junior Melissa Garrison (Phillipsburg, NJ/Belvidere HS) led the Lady Greyhounds defense. Kalbfleisch was named to the MAC Commonwealth All-Star First Team for her efforts this fall. Also contributing on defense were seniors Colleen Walsh (Northampton/Northampton HS) and Laura Webster (New Hope/New Hope-Solebury HS) and sophomore Nicole Solley (Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh HS).

Sophomore Samantha Fillian (Sea Girt, NJ/Sea Girt HS) started all 17 matches in goal for the Lady Greyhounds this season. In her first season as a starter, Fillian, who played 1,101 minutes, posted a 2.10 goals-against average with 86 saves and one shutout. In her career, Fillian has a 2.03 goals-against average. Freshman Mary Peterson (Clemmons, NC/Salem Academy) saw 112 minutes of action this season with three saves and a 0.63 goals-against average.

Moravian will return 13 players for the first season of the new millennium next fall including four that were on the MAC Academic Honor Roll including Dancho, Garrison, Gerstel and Roberts. Drey and Walsh were also named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll.
