2007 Review

THE SEASON: Moravian completed the 2007 season with a 6-4 overall record, and the Greyhounds were 4-4 in their first season as an associate member of the Centennial Conference.

THE COACH: Scot Dapp (West Chester ’73) finished his 21st season at Moravian, with a career record of 127-88-1 (.590) and passed Rocco Calvo as the school’s winningest football coach on September 8th with a 43-14 win versus McDaniel College.  He entered the season in the top 50 in winning percentage among NCAA Division III active coaches.  Dapp, who served as the president of the American Football Coaches Association in 2005, has earned Coach-of-the-Year honors from the MAC three times including Co-Coach of the Year in 1997 and has led the ’Hounds to two appearances in the NCAA playoffs, the ECAC Southeast Bowl game in 2002 and the ECAC Southwest Bowl game in 2004 & 2005, winning the title in 2005.

GREYHOUNDS IN THE CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE: Moravian has joined the Centennial Conference as an associate member in the sport of football beginning in 2007.  The Greyhounds were selected fourth with two first-place votes in the Centennial Conference preseason coaches and sports information directors’ poll, and the squad finished in a tie for fifth.

THE CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE STATISTICAL RANKINGS: The Greyhounds was seventh in the Centennial Conference in total defense, allowing 357.5 yards per game. The squad was eighth in passing defense at 225.7 yards per game, and the defense was third in rushing yards allowed at 131.8.  The Greyhounds were fifth in points allowed at 25.0 per game, and the squad was fourth in the conference in points scored per game at 25.6. Offensively, Moravian ranked third in the Centennial Conference at 344.7 yards per game. The Greyhounds ranked sixth in rushing offense at 143.0 yards per game and fourth in passing offense at 201.4 yards per game.  Moravian was tied for fifth in turnover margin with a +0.10 per game average as the Greyhounds committed 21 turnovers while forcing 22 turnovers this season.  Moravian was tied for first in point-after touchdown kicking percentage at 1.000 (29-of-29).  Individually, junior quarterback Marc Braxmeier (Center Valley, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS), pictured at top right, was second in the Centennial Conference in pass efficiency at 139.3, third in passing yards per game at 194.8 and fifth in total offense at 189.6 yards per game.  Junior running back Tyler McCambridge (Northampton, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) finished ninth in the Centennial Conference in all-purpose yardage at 99.4 yards per contest and was seventh in rushing yards at 69.0 yards per game while junior fullback Morgan deRouen (West Milford, NJ/West Milford HS) was eighth in conference in rushing yards at 57.0 per game.  Junior kicker Brian Reckenbeil (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) finished second in kick scoring at 6.2 points per game, tied for first in field goals per game at 1.10, third in field goal percentage at 55.0 percent (11-for-20), tied for first in PAT percentage at 1.000 (29-of-29) and fifth in overall scoring at 6.2 points per game.  Senior wide receiver Sean Hill (West Reading, PA/Wyomissing HS) was tied for 12th in scoring overall and eighth in touchdown scoring at 4.8 points per game, and Hill was seventh in receiving yards per game in the Centennial Conference at 60.6 yards per contest.  Junior punter Michael Voskian (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) was sixth in punting with an average of 35.9 yards per punt.  Junior linebacker Andrew Morrissey (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS) was first in forced fumbles with 0.44 per game, and he is fifth in tackles with 8.3 per contest while junior linebacker Kevin McGorry (Whitehall, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) was tied for second in the conference in forced fumbles per game at 0.30 and 13th in tackles per game at 7.4.  Sophomore linebacker Jayson Williams (Collingswood, NJ/ Collingswood HS) was tied for sixth in forced fumbles with 0.25 per contest while junior defensive back Carl Robinson (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley HS) was tied for 47th at 5.1 tackles per game and for second in interceptions with 0.50 per contest.  Junior defensive back Erik Brinkerhoff (Boonton, NJ/Boonton HS) was tied for 29th in tackles per game with an average of 6.1 while senior linebacker Zach Santiago (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) was tied for 23rd at 6.4 tackles per contest.  Sophomore defensive back Brad Bodine (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS) was tied for seventh in passes defended at 1.00 per game.

CENTENNIAL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS: Moravian had 11 players named to the 2007 All-Centennial Conference Football Teams with junior quarterback Marc Braxmeier and senior offensive lineman Eric Adams (Dover, NJ/Dover HS) earning first team honors. The Greyhounds had seven All-Centennial Conference Second Team honorees with senior wide receiver Sean Hill, senior tight end Kris Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and senior offensive linemen Dave Kircher (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS) and Jeff Kocsis (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) making the offensive squad and juniors linebacker Andrew Morrissey and defensive linemen Douglas Bocchino (Madison, NJ/Madison HS) and Don Maxwell (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston HS) on the defensive squad.  Junior kicker Brian Reckenbeil, junior fullback Morgan deRouen and junior defensive back Carl Robinson each earned All-Centennial Conference Honorable Mention.

2007 AZTEC BOWL: Moravian senior tight end Kris Bisci, pictured at left, was selected to play for the American Football Coaches Association’s Division III all-star team that represented the United States against the Mexican National Team in the 2007 Aztec Bowl on December 8th in Chihuahua, Mexico.  Bisci caught two passes for 13 yards including an eight-yard touchdown pass that put the USA in the lead for good in a 37-19 win.

MILESTONE WATCH: The Greyhounds had four players closing in on milestones for their seasons and careers.  Junior kicker Brian Reckenbeil became just the third kicker in Moravian history to reach 100 career points on September 8th and set the all-time school record for scoring by a kicker on September 29th.  Reckenbeil is first all-time with 154 career points on 70 extra-points (second all-time) and 28 field goals (first all-time).  Reckenbeil needs four extra-points to set the school record, and has made 38 straight extra-points dating back to the 2006 season.  Reckenbeil’s 62 points in 2007 are a school record.  Junior quarterback Marc Braxmeier moved passed the 1,000 career passing yardage mark on September 15th and the 2,000 yard mark on October 13th.  Braxmeier has now thrown for 2,527 yards including 1,948 this season, and he has thrown 17 touchdown receptions this fall, the second highest single season total in school history behind the record of 23 touchdown passes by new Moravian College Hall of Famer Sean Keville.  Junior running back Tyler McCambridge became the 19th Greyhound to reach 1,000 career yards rushing on September 8th.  McCambridge has 1,311 yards on 358 carries with nine touchdowns.  Senior wide receiver Sean Hill caught eight touchdown passes this season, tied for the third most in a single season and just two shy of the school record of ten.

THE QUARTERBACKS: Junior Marc Braxmeier completed 129 of 236 passes for 1,948 yards with 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 10 games.  Braxmeier’s four touchdown passes in the 34-27 season opening win at Susquehanna University and in a 44-41 win at Johns Hopkins University tied the school record for touchdown passes in a game, last done by Rob Petrosky during the 1996 season.  Braxmeier also had four rushing touchdowns this season but had been sacked 25 times for a net rushing total of minus 52 yards in 61 carries.  Sophomore quarterback Ryan Rempe (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley HS) has completed two of eight passes for 51 yards.  Rempe, who saw action as a tailback against Ursinus College last weekend, has six carries for 23 yards while freshman quarterback Steven Zander (Newton, NJ/Newton HS) two rushing attempts for no yards and has completed a pass for 15 yards.

IN THE BACKFIELD: In the backfield, junior tailback Tyler McCambridge, who missed two full games and parts of two others with an injury, had gained 483 yards on 122 carries this season with two touchdowns and a long run of 27 yards.  Junior fullback Morgan deRouen, who was injured against Franklin & Marshall College, had 399 yards and two touchdowns on 63 attempts with a long of 34 while junior yards tailback Tyler deRouen (West Milford, NJ/West Milford HS), who has missed the last six games with an injury, had added 132 yards and a score on 35 carries with a long run of 17 yards.  Freshman running back Ricky Allen (Pocono Summit, PA/Pocono Mountain West HS) has contributed 213 yards and a touchdown on 56 carries with a long of 32 yards while sophomore running back Anthony Falco (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) has 183 yards and a touchdown on 59 rushing attempts with a long of ten yards.  Junior fullback Michael Cancelliere (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) has 36 yards and touchdown on ten carries including a long run of ten yards while freshman running back Wesley Germain (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven HS) has eight yards on three carries.

THE WIDE RECEIVERS: The Greyhounds had 12 different players catch a pass this season led by senior wide receiver Sean Hill, who had 32 receptions for 606 yards with eight touchdowns.  Freshman wide receiver Shawn Sylvainus (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) had 29 catches for 466 yards and three scores while senior tight end Kris Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS), who had missed the last two games with an injury, had added 19 catches for 252 yards and two touchdowns.  Junior wide receiver Tyler Hersch (Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS), who missed the first three games of the season with an injury, had 14 catches for 202 yards while junior wide receiver Tyler Williams (Coplay, PA/Whitehall HS) had ten receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown.  Sophomore tight end Brian Dencker (Boonton, NJ/Boonton HS) had 12 receptions for 149 yards while junior fullback Morgan deRouen had five catches for 65 yards with one touchdown.  Junior running back Tyler McCambridge had four catches for 28 yards while freshman wide receiver Alex Hersch (Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS) had contributed four receptions for 57 yards and two touchdowns.  Junior tight end Nick Johnson (Keyport, NJ/Keyport HS) made his first career catch against Susquehanna University for 41 yards while junior fullback Michael Cancelliere caught his first collegiate pass against Juniata College for 19 yards.  Freshman tight end Joseph DeBaradinis (Bangor, PA/Pius X HS) also caught his first career pass against Juniata for 15 yards. 

OFFENSIVE LINE: Leading the way for the backfield was a solid offensive line led by returning starters seniors Dave Kircher, Eric Adams, pictured above right, and Jeff Kocsis and junior Timothy McBride (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township HS). Sophomore Andrew Grando (Whiting, NJ/Manchester Township HS) earned the other starting position to help the Greyhounds average 6-2, 275 on the front line.  Freshman Daniel Cancelliere (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) saw action in four games due to an injury by Kocsis, who was a member of the All-Middle Atlantic Conference Second Team a year ago, while junior Wes Harpel (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen HS) started at Franklin & Marshall College for McBride, who missed the game with an injury, and Harpel has seen action in three games.

DEFENSIVE FRONT: Junior defensive end Don Maxwell led the Moravian defensive front with 39 tackles including two tackles for loss, half a sack and a fumble recovery while junior defensive lineman Douglas Bocchino has added 40 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, an interception returned 45 yards for a touchdown versus Lebanon Valley College, a pass break-up and a fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown against Johns Hopkins University.  Senior defensive lineman Matt Adams (Dover, NJ/Dover HS) contributed 23 stops with two and a half tackles for loss.  Freshman defensive lineman Sean Rimmer (Kintnersville, PA/Palisades HS) made 12 tackles with one tackle for loss while junior defensive tackle Robert Kadel (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren HS) had eight tackles with two tackles for loss.  Freshman defensive end Matthew Leiggi (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro HS) added one tackle while junior defensive tackle Mike Nagle (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace HS) blocked and extra-point at Susquehanna University and recovered the block for the Greyhounds.

THE LINEBACKER CORPS: Junior linebacker Andrew Morrissey, who was injured early in the game against Ursinus College, led the Greyhound defense with a team high 75 tackles to go along with six tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and four forced fumbles while junior linebacker Kevin McGorry added 74 tackles, eight tackles for loss, a sack, two pass break-ups, a fumble recovery and three forced fumbles. Senior linebacker Zach Santiago had 64 tackles, eight tackles for loss, three and a half sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and two pass break-ups while sophomore linebacker Jayson Williams contributed 31 tackles with four tackles for loss, a sack and two forced fumbles.  Sophomore Derek Protasiewicz (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park HS) has made 33 tackles with three and a half tackles for loss, a half a sack, two pass break-ups, a fumble return of five yards and a blocked punt against Juniata College while senior linebacker Dan Edleman (Pottstown, PA/The Hill School) had 14 tackles.  Freshman linebacker Anthony Carney (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) made 20 tackles this season with one tackle for loss, one sack, two pass break-ups and a blocked punt at Susquehanna University while sophomore Michael Bishop (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) had two tackles for the Greyhounds.  Bishop has been moved to fullback due to injuries in the Moravian offensive backfield.

THE DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD: In the defensive backfield, junior strong safety Carl Robinson contributed 51 tackles, five interceptions and a forced fumble while junior defensive back Erik Brinkerhoff has 61 tackles with eight tackles for loss, four sacks, a fumble return of 72 yards for a touchdown versus McDaniel College, one interception, two forced fumbles and three pass break-ups.  Sophomore cornerback Brad Bodine made 42 tackles with one for loss, ten pass break-ups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery while freshman cornerback Daniel Burley (Easton, PA/Easton HS) had 33 tackles to go along with an interception and four pass break-ups.  Freshman defensive back Thomas Dailey (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) contributed 27 tackles, one tackle for loss, an interception with a nine-yard return and two pass break-ups for Moravian while freshman defensive back/linebacker Jason Lauver (Winfield, PA/Selinsgrove HS) had an interception, a fumble recovery and five tackles.  Freshman defensive back Dominic Rafetto (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) had 13 tackles this fall with half a tackle for loss and a majority of his tackles coming on special teams play while senior defensive back Matt Hegarty (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS) had six tackles.

KICKING GAME: Junior kicker Brian Reckenbeil, pictured at right, was 29-for-29 on extra-point attempts this season, and he was 11-for-20 on field goal attempts with a long of 37 yards against McDaniel.  Reckenbeil averaged 52.8 yards per kickoff as well, making opponents receive the kickoff at their own 17-yard line. Junior punter Michael Voskian averaged 35.9 yards per punt on 49 attempts with a career long of 51 yards at Johns Hopkins University.  Voskian had 11 punts inside the 20-yard line, eight fair caught, one blocked and five touchbacks.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Junior running back Tyler McCambridge had six kickoff returns for 124 yards while senior wide receiver Sean Hill had returned four kickoffs for 75 yards.  McCambridge also had six punt returns for 124 yards while freshman wide receiver Alex Hersch had added nine kickoff returns for 206 yards and five special teams tackles.  Freshman defensive back Eric Woodruff (Brodheadsville, PA/Pius X HS), who had eight tackles, five pass break-ups and a blocked extra-point against Juniata College, has returned eight kickoffs for 165 yards while junior wide receiver Tyler Hersch had run back 10 kickoffs for 247 yards.  Freshman linebacker Anthony Carney was credited with a 25-yard punt return after blocking a punt at Susquehanna.  Freshman wide receiver Shawn Sylvainus made 13 tackles on special teams this fall while junior fullback Michael Cancelliere was credited with two tackles and junior kicker Brian Reckenbeil with three.

ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL DISTRICT II COLLEGE DIVISION FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM: Juniors Tyler McCambridge, Brian Reckenbeil, and Carl Robinson were named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II College Division Football Second Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE FALL ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL: Juniors Robert Kadel, Tyler McCambridge and Carl Robinson were all named to the 2007 Centennial Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll.

BALANCED & EXPERIENCED ‘HOUNDS: Of the 97 players on the Moravian roster, 45 are freshmen, 16 are sophomores and 22 are juniors.  There are 14 seniors on this season’s squad, and the Greyhounds return 50 letterwinners and 18 starters.

STARTING THE SEASON 4-0: Moravian’s 4-0 start to the 2007 season was just the fifth time the Greyhounds had won their first four games of the season, and the second time in the last four years.  Moravian’s other 4-0 starts were in 1940 (6-0), 1941 (4-0), 1988 (4-0) and 2004 (7-0).

40s ARE WILD: When Moravian and Johns Hopkins University each scored over 40 points in the Greyhounds 44-41 win on September 22nd, it marked the first time in school history for both schools that they had participated in a game in which both teams scored more than 40 points.  The closest Moravian had been before was a 45-39 loss to Albright College in 2004.

WINNING WAYS: Moravian had 11 consecutive winning seasons—all under Coach Scot Dapp, from 1987 to 1997 and has had 16 winning seasons including 2007 in Dapp’s 21 years. The 11-straight winning seasons is the longest in school history. Dapp ranks third among Greyhound coaches in winning percentage.

OVERTIME ‘HOUNDS: Moravian has played a total of seven overtime games since the NCAA instituted the rule for the 1996 season and is 5-2 all-time in the extra-session. The 2006 season was the sixth time since 1996 that the Greyhounds did not play at least one overtime game.
