2008 Review

THE SEASON: Moravian completed the 2008 season with an 8-3 overall record, a 6-2 Centennial Conference record and played in the 2008 ECAC Division III Southwest Bowl Championship game. The Greyhounds lost to the Salisbury University Sea Gulls 21-17.

Scot Dapp (West Chester ’73) completed his 22nd season at Moravian, with a career record of 135-91-1 (.595), the winningest football coach in Moravian history.  He entered the season in the top 50 in winning percentage among NCAA Division III active coaches.  Dapp, who served as the president of the American Football Coaches Association in 2005, has earned Coach-of-the-Year honors from the MAC three times including Co-Coach of the Year in 1997 and has led the ’Hounds to two appearances in the NCAA playoffs, the ECAC Southeast Bowl game in 2002, the ECAC Southwest Bowl game in 2004, 2005 & 2008, winning the title in 2005.

GREYHOUNDS IN THE CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE: Moravian has joined the Centennial Conference as an associate member in the sport of football beginning in 2007.  The Greyhounds were selected fifth with two first-place votes in the Centennial Conference preseason coaches and sports information directors’ poll, and the squad finished in a tie for second.

THE CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE STATISTICAL RANKINGS: The Greyhounds were third in the Centennial Conference in total defense, allowing 303.0 yards per game. The squad was fourth in passing defense at 165.4 yards per game, and the defense was fourth in rushing yards allowed at 137.6.  The Greyhounds were second in points allowed at 17.8 per game, and the squad was fifth the conference in points scored per game at 25.5. Offensively, Moravian was fifth in the Centennial Conference at 333.3 yards per game. The Greyhounds were ranked fourth in rushing offense at 204.4 yards per game and eighth in passing offense at 128.9 yards per game.  Moravian was first in turnover margin with a +1.27 per game average as the Greyhounds committed 22 turnovers while forcing 36 turnovers last season.  Moravian was also first in the Centennial Conference in sack by with 25 for 172 yards, second in opponent penalties with an average of 28.7 yards in opponent penalties per game, first in opponent third down conversions at 32.0 percent (44 of 139), and tied for first in extra-point kicking at 100 percent (30-for-30).  Individually, senior quarterback Marc Braxmeier, who is picutred abover and left, was sixth in the Centennial Conference in pass efficiency at 112.5, eighth in passing yards per game at 124.6 and tenth in total offense at 124.8 yards per game.  Senior running back Tyler McCambridge was fourth in the Centennial Conference in rushing offense at 101.5 yards per game, 12th in total offense at 101.5 yards per game and fourth in all-purpose yardage at 151.2 yards per contest while senior running back Tyler deRouen (West Milford, NJ/West Milford HS) was sixth in the conference in rushing offense per game at 74.2 yards and 14th in total offense at 74.2.  McCambridge was also ninth in kickoff returns at 18.8 yards per return and third in overall scoring and touchdown scoring at 7.5 points per game while junior running back Ryan Rempe was 11th in rushing at 66.1 yards per game.  Rempe was 15th in touchdown scoring at 4.4 points per contest.  Senior kicker Brian Reckenbeil was first in kick scoring at 6.5 points per game and fourth in overall scoring at 7.5 points per game, and Reckenbeil was tied for first in PAT percentage at 1.000 (30-of-30), first in field goals per game at 1.27 and tied for second in field goal percentage at 70.0 (14-for-20).  Sophomore wide receiver Alex Hersch (Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS) was eighth in punt returns with an average of 6.3 yards per return while sophomore wide receiver Shawn Sylvainus was eighth in receiving yards per game at 43.2 and 14th in receptions per contest at 2.83.  Senior punter Michael Voskian was second in punting with an average of 38.0 yards per punt.  Senior defensive back Carl Robinson (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley HS) was second in the Centennial Conference in interceptions at 0.45 per game while sophomore defensive back Daniel Burley (Easton, PA/Easton HS) was tied for fifth in interceptions with 0.36 per game.  Robinson was tied for 24th in tackles per game with an average of 6.0, and he was tied for third in passes defended at 1.18 while Burley is tied for 31st in tackles at 5.5 and tied for third in passes defended at 1.18 per game.  Senior linebacker Kevin McGorry (Whitehall, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) was fifth in tackles per game at 9.0 tackles per contest while senior linebacker Andrew Morrissey was also eighth at 8.4 tackles per game and fifth in forced fumbles at 0.36 per contest.  Senior defensive lineman Douglas Bocchino (Madison, NJ/Madison HS), picutred right, was tied for 24th with 6.0 tackles per game and he is also second in the conference in sacks with 0.77 per game, first in forced fumbles with 0.55 per contest and third in tackles for loss with 1.27 per contest.  Senior defensive back Erik Brinkerhoff (Boonton, NJ/Boonton HS) was 33rd in tackles at 5.4 per game while sophomore linebacker Anthony Carney (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) was tied for 31st in tackles with 5.5 per contest.  Sophomore defensive lineman Allen Petros (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) was tied for fourth in sacks at 0.55 per game and fourth in tackles for loss with 1.25 per contest.

CENTENNIAL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS: Moravian had ten players named to the 2008 All-Centennial Conference Football Teams with senior offensive lineman Timothy McBride (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township HS), senior kicker Brian Reckenbeil (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS), senior defensive end Douglas Bocchino (Madison, NJ/Madison HS), senior linebacker Andrew Morrissey (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS) and senior defensive back Carl Robinson (Boothwyn, PA/Carney Valley HS) earning first team honors. The Greyhounds had four All-Centennial Conference Second Team honorees with senior running back Tyler McCambridge (Northampton, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) and junior offensive lineman Andrew Grando (Whiting, NJ/Manchester Township HS) making the offensive squad, and senior linebacker Kevin McGorry (Whitehall, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) and senior punter Michael Voskian (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) on the defensive squad.  Senior defensive lineman Don Maxwell (Berkley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston HS) earned All-Centennial Conference Honorable Mention.

MILESTONE WATCH: Moravian had two players with game milestones over the last four games of the season.  Junior running back Ryan Rempe (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley HS) tied Chris Jacoubs’ single game record for rushing attempts with 51 carries in Moravian’s 23-20 triple-overtime win at Juniata College.  Rempe, making his first career start as a tailback, had a then career high 174 yards in the game.  Rempe started five games at quarterback as a freshman in 2006 but was converted to a tailback last season after several injuries in the Moravian backfield.  Last Saturday, Rempe had a career best 180 yards and four touchdowns on 41 carries, the fourth most in a single game in school history.  Rempe has run for 461 yards and four touchdowns, all against Muhlenberg, on 124 carries in the Greyhounds last three games  Sophomore wide receiver Shawn Sylvainus (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) caught a career high 11 receptions for a career best 155 yards in the contest at Juniata.  The 11 receptions are tied for the third most in a single game in Greyhound history while the 155 yards ranks fifth in the record book.

THE QUARTERBACKS: Senior Marc Braxmeier completed 105 of 202 passes for 1,371 yards with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions in Moravian’s 2008 season.  Braxmeier also has four rushing touchdowns this season and has been sacked 18 times for a net rushing total of two yards in 52 carries. Junior Patrick Weiss (Gilbertsville, PA/St. Pius X) completed five out of nine passes for 43 yards with one touchdown and one interception in Moravian’s game against Ursinus College, and he also saw action at McDaniel College.  Weiss has also run for 15 yards on three carries while not being sacked.  Freshman quarterback Ted Passyn (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitehmarsh HS) has completed two of four passes for four yards in limited action against McDaniel while freshman quarterback Tedd Teschner (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional HS) also saw action at McDaniel but has not attempted a pass this season.

IN THE BACKFIELD: In the backfield, the Greyhounds have run for 2,248 yards and 24 touchdowns on 564 attempts this season through 11 games.  Senior running back Tyler McCambridge, who missed the Juniata College and Muhlenberg College games with an injury, has a team high 812 yards and nine touchdowns on 138 carries that included a career long run of 79 yards at Gettysburg College, the fifth longest run in school history.  Junior running back Ryan Rempe has run for 727 yards and seven touchdowns on 178 carries with 165 of those carries in the last four games.  Rempe also has a 63-yard carry this fall against Muhlenberg and has three straight 100-yard games.  Senior running back Tyler deRouen has 445 yards and three touchdowns on a 94 carries but was injured at Gettysburg and knocked out for the season while his twin brother senior fullback Morgan deRouen (West Milford, NJ/West Milford HS), who also missed the Juniata game with an injury, has 265 yards on 69 rushing attempts with one touchdown.  Junior running back Anthony Falco (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) has 13 yards on four carries this season while freshman fullback Zachary Sigley (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) has 11 yards on seven attempts.

THE WIDE RECEIVERS: The Greyhounds have had 13 different players catch a pass this season led by senior wide receiver Tyler Hersch (Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS), who has caught 24 passes for 248 yards and a touchdown.  Sophomore wide receiver Shawn Sylvainus has 17 receptions for 259 yards after missing the first five games of the year with an injury while junior tight end Brian Dencker (Boonton, NJ/Boonton HS) has 17 receptions for 182 yards and two touchdowns, and he has caught two two-point conversion passes this season.  Senior wide receiver Tyler Williams (Coplay, PA/Whitehall HS) has 13 receptions for a team high 268 yards and a touchdown after a career high 129 yards receiving at Gettysburg College while senior running back Tyler McCambridge has 13 receptions for 170 yards and a touchdown.  Sophomore wide receiver Alex Hersch has 13 receptions for 182 yards and a touchdown while senior fullback Morgan deRouen has seven catches for 71 yards and a score.  Senior tight end Nick Johnson (Keyport, NJ/Keyport HS) has one catch for 14 yards while freshman fullback Zachary Sigley has one reception for a three-yard touchdown.  Freshman tight end Mike Zanoni (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) and freshman wide receiver Travis Gearhart (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mountain West HS) each have one reception for two yards.  Senior tailback Tyler deRouen has caught one pass for four yards while junior running back Ryan Rempe has three catches for 13 yards on the year.

OFFENSIVE LINE: Moravian replaced three starters on the offensive line this fall; however, senior Timothy McBride (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township HS) returned for his third season as a starter. Junior Andrew Grando (Whiting, NJ/Manchester Township HS) was the other returning starter on the offensive line while sophomore Daniel Cancelliere (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) and senior Wes Harpel (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen HS) each had playing experience and stepped into the starting line-up.  Freshman Nicholas Marzuoli (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and sophomore Matthew Washer (Ogdensburg, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) are also seeing time on the line this fall.  Senior Mike Nagle (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace HS), who is picutred left, is making the switch from defensive line to offensive line and started at center for the Greyhounds.  Moravian’s front five in 2008 averaged 6-2, 275.

DEFENSIVE FRONT: Senior defensive end Douglas Bocchino led the Greyhound defensive front with 66 tackles, eight and a half sacks, 14 tackles for loss, six forced fumbles, three pass break-ups, an interception and a fumble recovery while senior nose tackle Don Maxwell had 41 tackles, five and a half tackles for loss, one and a half sacks, four pass break-ups, two fumble recoveries including an eight-yard touchdown at McDaniel College and a blocked field goal in the third overtime at Juniata College.  Maxwell missed the game at Gettysburg College with an injury.  Sophomore defensive lineman Allen Petros had 37 tackles with 12 and a half for loss, five and a half sacks, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery while sophomore defensive end Michael McClarin (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) had 29 tackles, two tackles for loss, a half a sack, a pass break-up and three fumble recoveries with a return of 23 yards versus Susquehanna University.  Freshman defensive lineman Seth Payne (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood HS) had 13 tackles, two tackles for loss and two pass break-ups while sophomore defensive lineman Jacob Millen (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) had added five tackles, a forced fumble and a pass break-up.

THE LINEBACKER CORPS: Senior linebacker Kevin McGorry led the Moravian defense and the linebackers with 99 tackles on the season to go with five tackles for loss, one sack, two fumble recoveries, a pass break-up and a blocked field goal against Susquehanna University while senior linebacker Andrew Morrissey added 92 tackles, six and a half tackles for loss, a sack, a pass break-up, an interception with a 13-yard return versus Muhlenberg College and four forced fumbles. Sophomore linebacker Anthony Carney had 60 tackles, four tackles for loss, an interception with a 16-yard return versus Muhlenberg, a sack, a fumble recovery and two pass break-ups.  Junior linebacker Derek Protasiewicz (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park HS) had contributed 29 tackles with two sacks, two tackles for loss and two forced fumbles while sophomore linebacker/defensive back Jason Lauver (Winfield, PA/Selinsgrove Area HS) added 26 tackles with a sack, three tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.  Sophomore linebacker Michael Crann (Columbia, NJ/North Warren HS) had nine tackles to go with a forced fumble while junior linebacker Jayson Williams (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood HS), who has missed six games with an injury, has four tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble.  Sophomore linebacker Philip Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) had two tackles and a fumble recovery before an injury sidelined him after the season opener while junior linebacker Michael Bishop (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) has contributed eight tackles and a fumble recovery.

THE DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD: In the defensive backfield, senior safety Carl Robinson has made 66 tackles to go along with a sack, three tackles for loss, five interceptions, a total of 12 passes defended, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery while sophomore cornerback Daniel Burley had contributed 60 tackles on the year with two tackles for loss, four interceptions, 13 total passes defended, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.  Senior safety Erik Brinkerhoff has 59 tackles with one and a half tackles for loss, eight passes defended, a fumble recovery, two interceptions and two forced fumbles while junior defensive back Brad Bodine has 44 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, two interceptions including a 33-yard return against Franklin & Marshall College and five passes defended.  Junior defensive back Kyle Krupa (Ashley, PA/Hanover HS) has 11 tackles this fall for the Greyhounds.  Freshman defensive back David Wacker (Parkton, MD/Hereford HS) has nine tackles, a fumble recovery and a blocked field goal in the first overtime at Juniata College while sophomore defensive back Thomas Dailey (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) has eight tackles.  Sophomore defensive back Warner Jones (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) has added seven tackles in his first year with the Greyhounds.

KICKING GAME: Senior kicker Brian Reckenbeil was 30-for-30 on extra-point attempts this season, and 14-for-20 on field goal attempts including a school record 47-yard kick on his first attempt of the season versus Susquehanna University.  Reckenbeil, who is picutred below, averaged 54.7 yards per kickoff as well on 50 kickoffs, making opponents receive the kickoff at their own 15-yard line.  Freshman kicker Ian Heck (Easton, PA/Easton HS) had six kickoffs this season with an average of 57.7 yards per kick to push opponents near their own 12-yard line to receive the ball.  Senior punter Michael Voskian was averaging 38 yards per punt on 48 attempts with a career long of 56 yards versus Ursinus College.  Voskian, who set the school record for a single game with an average of 42.3 yards per punt against Johns Hopkins University, had had five punts fair caught, seven inside the 20-yard line, five touchbacks and two blocked.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Senior running back Tyler McCambridge had ten kickoff returns for 188 yards, an average of 18.8 yards per return, and seven punt returns for 40 yards, an average of 5.7 yards per return while sophomore wide receiver Alex Hersch had returned nine kickoffs for 144 yards, 16 yards per return, and 18 punts for 113 yards, an average of 6.3 yards a return.  Junior running back Ryan Rempe had six kickoff returns for 208 yards including an 82-yard return for a touchdown at Gettysburg College and four tackles on special teams while freshman running back Philip Redline (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) had returned one kickoff for six yards.  Freshman wide receiver Jesse Phillips (Allentown, PA/Salisbury HS) added ten kickoff returns for 175 yards and one tackle while freshman wide receiver Travis Gearhart has contributed six tackles.  Junior running back Anthony Falco had eight tackles on special teams and a kickoff return for nine yards while freshman wide receiver Patrick Meeres (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape HS) made five tackles.  Freshman tight end Mike Zanoni had two tackles on special teams as did freshman running back Zachary Sigley.  Freshman linebacker Douglas DiMattia (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove HS) had three tackles on special teams and is serving as the team’s long snapper on punts.

ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL DISTRICT II COLLEGE DIVISION FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM: Seniors running back Tyler McCambridge (Northampton, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS), kicker Brian Reckenbeil (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) and defensive back Carl Robinson (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley HS) were named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II College Division Football First Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE FALL ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL: Seniors kicker Brian Reckenbeil (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS),running back Tyler McCambridge (Northampton, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) and defensive back Carl Robinson (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley HS), junior linebacker Michael Bishop (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) and sophomores linebacker Michael Crann (Columbia, NJ/North Warren Regional HS) and wide receiver Alex Hersch (Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS) were all named to the 2008 Centennial Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll.
BALANCED & EXPERIENCED ‘HOUNDS: Of the 96 players on the Moravian roster, 29 are freshmen, 32 are sophomores and 14 are juniors.  There are 18 seniors on this season’s squad, and the Greyhounds return 50 letterwinners and 18 starters.
STARTING THE SEASON 4-0: Moravian’s 4-0 start to the 2008 season was just the six time the Greyhounds had won their first four games of the season, and the third time in the last four years.  Moravian’s other 4-0 starts were in 1940 (6-0), 1941 (4-0), 1988 (4-0), 2004 (7-0) and 2007 (4-0).

40s ARE WILD: Moravian played its first 81 years of football without a contest that saw both teams score more than 40 points.  Now, the Greyhounds have done it in back to back seasons.  Two weeks ago, Moravian and Gettysburg each scored over 40 points in a 48-41 win by the Bullets.  Last season, the Greyhounds and Johns Hopkins University each scored over 40 points in the Greyhounds 44-41 win on September 22, 2007 it was the first time in school history for the feat.
WINNING WAYS: Moravian had 11 consecutive winning seasons—all under Coach Scot Dapp, from 1987 to 1997 and has had 17 winning seasons in Dapp’s 22 years including the 2008 season. The 11-straight winning seasons is the longest in school history. Dapp ranks third among Greyhound coaches in winning percentage.

OVERTIME ‘HOUNDS: Moravian has played a total of nine overtime games since the NCAA instituted the rule for the 1996 season and is 7-2 all-time in the extra-session.  Five of those nine overtime games have been against Juniata College with the Greyhounds going 4-1 in those games.  Moravian’s contest in Huntingdon this fall marked the first time in the Greyhounds’ have needed more than one overtime session in a game.  This season also marks the second year that Moravian has played two overtimes games in one season, the other year was 1999.
