1998 Review

During the 1997 football season, the Moravian College football team had the ball bounce its way several times to finish the year with a 7-3 record. The 1998 squad didn 't get the ball to bounce its way this fall and posted a 3-7 record, the first losing season under head coach Scot Dapp, who completed his 12th season.

Moravian opened the season with a tough game at defending Middle Atlantic Conference Champion Lycoming and was shutout 36-0. The following week, the ‘Hounds hosted Juniata and for the fourth consecutive year, the game in a regulation tie. However, unlike the past two years, Moravian lost 23-20 in overtime.

In the season's third week, the Greyhounds were able to avenge their worst loss of 1997, a 46-0 loss at Albright, by defeating the Lions 17-7. The next game was at Delaware Valley the Greyhounds record dropped to 1-3 with the 28-16 loss. Week five brought undefeated and nationally ranked Widener University to Bethlehem, a team Moravian stunned in overtime in 1997. The Pioneers were ready for the ‘Hounds this year and won 45-13. Moravian travelled to Susquehanna University next and was hoping to duplicate last season 's homecoming victory over the Crusaders, but Susquehanna gained a 17-16 win to drop the Greyhounds to 1-5.

Moravian's offense came on the following week at Lebanon Valley as the Greyhounds defeated the winless Flying Dutchmen, 32-15. The ‘Hounds also gave the Homecoming crowd something to cheer about on October 31st as they defeated FDU-Madison, 35-0. In week nine of the season, Moravian went to Wilkes University in search of a third straight victory but lost 40-21, the team's third consecutive loss to the Colonels. The final week of the 1998 campaign had arch-rival Muhlenberg College making the trip to Bethlehem and when the Greyhounds scored 14 points in the first quarter, it looked like they would role to their 11 straight win over the Mules. However, Muhlenberg rebounded and held the ‘Hounds scoreless for the rest of the contest and won 33-14.
