2005-06 Review

The 2005-06 Moravian College golf team won its first-ever Commonwealth Conference Tournament Championship, capturing the title by 21 strokes over runner-up Susquehanna University. The conference championship was Moravian’s fourth but first in the Commonwealth, which began its own tournament last year. The Greyhounds, under the direction of head coach John Makuvek for the 38th season, won four tournaments throughout the season and placed in the top five in 13 of 16 tournaments. Coach Makuvek earned Commonwealth Coach of the Year honors.

At the Commonwealth Conference Championships, junior Brian Bergstol (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS) earned medalist honors with a 54-hole tournament total of 212, seven strokes ahead of the next golfer. Bergstol, who was named to the Ping/Golf Coaches Association of America All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team for the third straight year, had a season average of 74.6 strokes per round with a low score of 68 at the York College Spring Invitational at the Outdoor Country Club. He made it to Moravian’s record books having the lowest season stroke average with 1,417 strokes in 19 rounds last season. Bergstol did not have a round in the over 79 during the season and was medalist in three different tournaments.

Senior Dustin McCormick (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg HS) finished third of 34 golfers with a score of 221 to earn Commonwealth All-Conference First Team honors with Bergstol. McCormick averaged 78.7 strokes per round this past season with a season low round of 70 at the Franklin & Marshall College Fall Invitational. McCormick earned medalist honors twice during the 2005-06 season, and he completed his career third in school history with a 78.71 stroke average over 74 and a half rounds, playing every round possible during his four-year career at Moravian.

Sophomore Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS) finished tenth in the tournament with a total of 234, and he was named to the Commonwealth All-Conference Second Team. Whitman had a season average of 80.1, and his low round of the year was a 72 at the York College of Pennsylvania Spring Invitational to begin the spring portion of the season. Sophomore Bryan Ott (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) was tied for 11th with a 54-hole score of 235 while sophomore Matt Hegarty (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS) fired a 242 for the tournament which was tied for 18th. Ott averaged 82.1 strokes per round with a low of 74 at the Franklin & Marshall Spring Invitational while Hegarty had an average of 82.3 strokes per round with a season best round of 74 on the second day of the Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational.

Also competing for the Greyhounds this season were juniors John Gilbert (Allentown, PA/Freedom HS) and Thad Miller (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS) and sophomore Brian Scofield (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS). Miller had a season average of 82.4 strokes per round with a season best round of 77 at the Lebanon Valley College Fall Invitational while Gilbert averaged 86.9 per round with a low round of 75 at the Moravian Fall Invitational. Scofield averaged 88.1 shots per round and led Moravian at the Elizabethtown College Fall Blue Jay Classic with a season best round of 75.

Bergstol, Gilbert and Miller were also named to the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Academic Honor Roll this spring.

Coach Makuvek returns all but one player next year as Moravian will try to repeat as conference champions for the first time in school history.
