Vs. Johns Hopkins University
in ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship Semifinal Match at Western Maryland
College Lost 3-2
Sophomore midfielder Brian Donofrio and freshman midfielder Daniel
Samuelsson each scored unassisted goals but it wasn't enough as the
Greyhounds, seeded fourth in the 2001 Eastern College Athletic Conference
Mid-Atlantic Region Championships fell to top seed Johns Hopkins University,
3-2, in a semifinal match played at Western Maryland College. The
Blue Jays scored with 1:16 left in the contest to earn the victory. Donofrio
had given Moravian a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute while Samuelsson's
tally tied the match in the 79th minute. Sophomore goalie Vince
Nasuta made 13 saves in the loss as the Greyhounds were out shot 19-10.
Vs. Grove City College in ECAC Mid-Atlantic
Championship First Round Won 1-0 (4 overtimes)
Freshman midfielder Daniel Samuelsson put a shot in the upper right-hand
corner off a pass from freshman defender Jim Feimster 2:05 into the
fourth overtime to lift Moravian to a 1-0 victory over Grove City College
in the First Round of the 2001 Eastern College Athletic Conference
Mid-Atlantic Region Championship. Feimster centered the ball
from the midfield stripe near the sideline and Samuelsson struck the
ball from just inside the top of the box left of the goal for the game-winner. Sophomore
goalie Vince Nasuta made six saves while playing all but four minutes
of the contest due to an injury to junior keeper Ryan Sculley. The
Greyhounds, the fourth seed in the six-team ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship,
improve to 13-5-2 on the season and move onto the semifinals where
Moravian will play top seed Johns Hopkins University on Saturday, November
10th at 2:00 p.m. at Western Maryland College. Saturday’s
other semifinal will have second seed Western Maryland hosting third
seed Franklin & Marshall College, who won Wednesday’s other
first round match, 2-1 over sixth seed Frostburg State (MD) University.
At Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth Conference
Semifinals Lost 2-0
The Greyhounds were knocked out of the Commonwealth Conference playoffs
for the second straight year by Elizabethtown College, this year the
score was 2-0. Moravian managed nine shots on goal and junior
keeper Ryan Sculley made six saves but it wasn't enough for the Greyhounds. The
loss was the first of the season for the Greyhounds on the road. Moravian
now has a record of 12-5-2 on the season and will wait until Monday,
November 5th to see if the team will earn a berth in the Eastern College
Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic Championship.
Vs. Widener University Won 1-0
Sophomore midfielder Mike Grillo scored off a pass from senior defender
Doug Becker in the 52nd minute to lift the Greyhounds to a 1-0 victory
over Widener University in the final Commonwealth Conference regular
season match of the season. Moravian completes the regular season
with a 12-4-2 overall record and a 5-2 slate in the Commonwealth Conference. Junior
goalie Ryan Sculley made one save in the first half and sophomore Keeper
Vince Nasuta did not make a save in the second half as Moravian limited
Widener to one shot in the match. The Greyhounds will travel
to Elizabethtown College for the Commonwealth Conference Semifinals
on Wednesday, October 31st.
At University of Scranton Won 6-1
Sophomore midfielder Tim Shannon scored a pair of first half goals
as the Moravian College men’s soccer team took a 5-1 halftime
lead in a 6-1 victory at the University of Scranton in non-conference
action. The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead 4:21 into the match when
sophomore midfielder Mike Grillo scored off a direct kick with an assist
from senior midfielder Evan Weller. Moravian extended the lead
to 2-0 in the ninth minute off a goal by junior forward Wilson Gonzalez
assisted by Grillo. Moravian made the lead 3-0 in the 17th minute
off a tally from Weller assisted by senior forward Nick Jordal. Shannon
scored hit first goal on a header off a throw-in from senior midfielder
Scott Heydt in the 19th minute. Shannon added his second goal
in the 40th minute of a pass from Grillo. The Greyhounds final
tally came in the 82nd minute off a goal by sophomore forward Anthony
Merz assisted by freshman midfielder Ryan Fick. Sophomore goalie
Vinny Nasuta made two saves in the first half in goal for the Greyhounds
while junior keeper Ryan Sculley had three saves in the second half.
Vs. Susquehanna University Won 7-1
The Greyhounds clinched their second straight berth in the Commonwealth
Conference playoffs and their first 10-win season since 1995 with a
7-1 victory over Susquehanna University in Commonwealth Conference
action. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by junior
forward Wilson Gonzalez assisted by freshman midfielder Ryan Fick and
a penalty kick by sophomore midfielder Mike Grillo. After allowing
a goal, the Greyhounds scored the final five goals of the game. Sophomore
midfielder Tim Shannon scored a pair of goals with one assisted by
senior midfielder Scott Heydt. Senior forward Nick Jordal tallied
and unassisted goal before freshman midfielder Jonathan Thomas scored
off a pass from freshman midfielder Daniel Samuelsson. Moravian
final goal of the match was an unassisted tally by Samuelsson. Sophomore
goalie Vinny Nasuta made four saves in the first half for the Greyhounds
while junior keeper Ryan Sculley made four saves in the second half.
Vs. Elizabethtown College Lost 2-0
Moravian dropped its second straight match and lost its chance to
host a Commonwealth Conference playoff match this season, falling to
Elizabethtown College, 2-0, in Commonwealth action. The Blue
Jays out shot Moravian 13-10 in the match. Moravian junior goalie
Ryan Sculley made eight saves in the contest.
Vs. Johns Hopkins University Lost 3-0
The Greyhounds had their five-match winning streak snapped by nationally
ranked Johns Hopkins University, 3-0, in non-conference action. Johns
Hopkins has only allowed three opponents in 13 matches to score this
season. Moravian had just four shots on goal in the contest. Junior
keeper Ryan Sculley had six saves in the match.
At Wilkes University Won 4-0
Sophomore midfielder Tim Shannon and senior midfielder Evan Weller
each scored a pair of goals to lead Moravian to a 4-0 win over Wilkes
University. The win improves the Greyhounds to 9-2-2 overall
and clinches Moravian its first winning season since a 12-7 mark in
1995. Shannon got Moravian on the board at the 30:58 mark of
the opening half when he scored off assists from freshmen midfielders
Ryan Fick and Dan Samuelsson on a corner kick. Exactly eight
minutes later, the Greyhounds opened up a 2-0 lead when Weller got
his first goal of the afternoon off another assist from Samuelsson. At
the 63:05 mark of the second stanza, Weller made it 3-0 for Moravian
with a goal off a senior midfielder Scott Heydt assist. Shannon
would cap the scoring with his tenth goal off the season and the eighth
in the last five matches at the 68:12 mark assisted by freshman midfielder
Jonathan Thomas. Moravian held a 13-6 shots on goal advantage
and a 10-4 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore keeper Vinny Nasuta
made one save in 75 minutes goal for the Greyhounds. Junior goalie
Ryan Sculley did not make a save in 15 minutes of action.
At Delaware Valley College Won 3-2

Sophomore midfielder Tim Shannon, the Commonwealth Conference Player
of the Week, scored his second goal of the game five minutes into overtime
to lift the Greyhounds to a 3-2 victory over Delaware Valley College
in non-conference action. Senior midfielder Evan Weller took
the corner kick that sophomore forward Anthony Merz flipped over to
Shannon to hit home for the game-winner. Shannon and senior midfielder
Scott Heydt each scored first half goals to give Moravian a 2-0 halftime
lead with Weller assisting on Shannon's first tally. Junior goalie
Ryan Sculley made five saves in the victory, Moravian's fourth in a
row.
At Lebanon Valley College Won 3-1
Sophomores forward Anthony Merz and midfielder Mike Grillo each scored
second half goals to lift the Greyhounds to a 3-1 victory over Lebanon
Valley College in Commonwealth Conference action. After falling
behind, 1-0 in the first half, sophomore midfielder Tim Shannon scored
his fourth goal of the week to tie the game on a pass from freshman
midfielder Ryan Fick. The Greyhounds took the lead for good when
Merz drove home a pass from freshman midfielder Daniel Samuelsson. Grillo
put the game away with a goal on a penalty kick late in the second
half. Junior goalie Ryan Sculley made one save for the victory.
Vs. College Misericordia Won 5-0
Sophomore midfielder Tim Shannon scored an unassisted goal in the
21st minute and senior midfielder Scott Heydt scored a pair of second
half goals to lead Moravian to a 5-0 non-conference victory over College
Misericordia. Shannon’s tally was the only offense sophomore
goalie Vinny Nasuta would need to post his first career shutout for
the Greyhounds. Nasuta made two saves in the match. Moravian
took a 2-0 just under two minutes before halftime on a goal by junior
forward Wilson Gonzalez off a direct kick by freshman midfielder Daniel
Samuelsson. Heydt scored his first goal just two minutes into
the second half on a pass from freshman midfielder Nick Tarquinio. Senior
forward Nick Jordal picked up his first goal of the season in the 82nd
minute off a direct kick by Samuelsson. Heydt finished off the
scoring with a chip shot over the goalie’s head in the 84th minute. Freshman
defender Jim Feimster had two assists in the match while freshman midfielder
Ryan Fick had one assist.
At DeSales University Won 2-1
Sophomore midfielder Tim Shannon scored a pair of goals including
the game-winner with two and a half minutes remaining in the second
half to lift the Greyhounds to a 2-1 non-conference victory over DeSales
University. Shannon's first goal, which came in the 40th minute,
deflected off a DeSales player before going in the net. The Bulldogs
tied the match in the second half before sophomore midfielder Mike
Grillo took the corner kick that Shannon headed home for the win. Moravian
junior goalie Ryan Sculley made four saves in the win.
Vs. Messiah College Lost 4-0
The Greyhounds suffered their first loss of the season in Commonwealth
Conference action, falling to Messiah College, 4-0. Junior goalie
Ryan Sculley made seven saves and sophomore keeper Vinny Nasuta had
one stop as the Greyhounds were out shot 24-5 in the contest.
Vs. Albright College Won 3-0
Junior forward Wilson Gonzalez scored a goal in the 30th minute and
junior goalie Ryan Sculley added four saves to lift the Greyhounds
to a 3-0 victory over Albright College in Commonwealth Conference action. Gonzalez
scored off a pass from sophomore forward Anthony Merz. Freshman
midfielder Ryan Fick added another first half goal off a pass from
sophomore midfielder Tim Shannon in the 42nd minute. Sophomore
Mike Grillo scored on a direct kick in the 52nd minute to cap the scoring
in the match.
Vs. Rutgers University-Camden Tied 1-1
Moravian scored a first half goal and Rutgers University-Camden netted
a second half goal as the two teams played to a 1-1 tie in a non-conference
match. Sophomore midfielder Tim Shannon gave Moravian a 1-0 lead
in the 33rd minute when he knocked in a shot on a scramble in front
of the net. Moravian had two of the best chances in the two overtime
sessions with freshman midfielder Ryan Fick heading a ball wide left
in the first overtime and senior midfielder Evan Weller hitting the
cross bar on a header with 1:40 to play in the second overtime. Greyhound
junior goalie Ryan Sculley played the first half of the match and made
two saves while sophomore Vinny Nasuta played the second half and overtime,
making seven saves.
At Juniata College Won 4-1
Senior midfielder Evan Weller scored a pair of goals and added an
assist to lead Moravian to a 4-1 victory over Juniata College in Commonwealth
Conference action. The Greyhounds needed just 54 seconds to get
on the board in the game with sophomore midfielder Mike Grillo scoring
on a penalty kick. Moravian made the score 2-0 in the 16th minute
when junior forward Wilson Gonzalez scored off a pass from Weller. Weller
extended Moravian’s lead to 3-0 in the 25th minute on a goal
assisted by freshman midfielder Ryan Fick. Weller scored the
only goal of the second half on a penalty kick in the 64th minute. Moravian
junior goalie Ryan Sculley made four saves in the victory.
Vs. Muhlenberg College Lost 3-1
Sophomore forward Anthony Merz scored his first goal of the season
but it wasn't enough as the Greyhounds dropped a 3-1 decision to rival
Muhlenberg College in non-conference action. Merz's goal came
in the second minute of the second half with Moravian already trailing
3-0 in the game. Freshman midfielder Ryan Fick and sophomore
midfielder Mike Grillo each had assists on the goal. Junior keeper
Ryan Sculley made four saves in the loss.
Vs. Eastern College Won 3-1
Junior forward Wilson Gonzalez scored a pair of second half goals
to lead Moravian to a 3-1 victory over Eastern College in non-conference
action. Moravian jumped on the board first with a goal by sophomore
midfielder Tim Shannon in the 15th minute. Sophomore midfielder
Mike Grillo chipped the ball into open space for Shannon. Gonzalez
scored the next two Moravian goals, the first coming as an unassisted
tally in the 48th minute and the second off a pass from freshman Nick
Tarquinio in the 50th minute. Sophomore goalie Vinny Nasuta picked
up his first collegiate victory in net for Moravian, making four saves.
Vs. Rutgers University-Camden Postponed
to Sept. 23rd
The Greyhounds home opener with Rutgers University-Camden has been
postponed and rescheduled for Sunday, September 23rd at 1:00 p.m.
Vs. Hobart College at Penn State Behrend Tournament Tie
1-1
The Greyhounds tied Hobart College 1-1 in the championship match of
the Penn State-Behrend HLM Tournament. After the two overtime
periods, Moravian won the tournament championship on penalty kicks,
6-5. Junior forward Wilson Gonzalez knocked in the final penalty
kick to give the Greyhounds the title. The NCAA does not recognize
penalty kicks as a way to break a tie in a regular season match so
the tie at the end of overtime is the way the game stands in the records. Moravian
freshman midfielder Ryan Fick scored his first career collegiate goal
in the 78th minute to tie the match. Sophomore midfielder Ken
Macaulay setup Fick's tally. Junior keeper Ryan Sculley made
12 saves in the match. Moravian sophomore Tim Shannon was named
the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Vs. Penn State-Behrend at Penn State Behrend
Tournament Won 2-1
Senior midfielder Evan Weller scored the winning goal in the 75th
minute to lead Moravian to a season opening 2-1 victory over host Penn
State-Behrend in the first day of the Penn State-Behrend HLM Tournament. The
Greyhounds will play Hobart College on Sunday for the tournament championship. Moravian
took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when sophomore midfielder Mike Grillo
scored a goal off a pass from Weller. Weller scored his winning
goal off a pair of passes from junior forward Wilson Gonzalez and sophomore
midfielder Tim Shannon. Moravian goalie junior Ryan Sculley made
three saves for the victory.
