2002 Review

The Greyhounds completed the 2002 season with a 12-9-2 record as the squad made its third straight trip to the Commonwealth Conference Playoffs and a second consecutive appearance in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic Championships. Moravian upset Elizabethtown College in the Commonwealth Semifinals, the first time the Greyhounds had defeated the Blue Jays since 1970, before falling to Messiah College in the title contest, Moravian’s first berth in the conference championship match since 1991. The Greyhounds reached the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Semifinals for the second straight season. The Greyhounds, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Eric Lambinus had four players named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star Team.

Junior Tim Shannon (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley HS) was named to the 2002 Commonwealth All-Conference First Team. He had five goals and four assists for 14 points. Sophomore Ryan Fick (Hamburg, PA/Fleetwood HS) was named to All-Conference Second Team as he contributed six goals and five assists for 17 total points, while classmate Nick Tarquinio (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro HS) was also named to the All-Conference Second Team with 2 goals and five assists for 19 points. Sophomore Daniel Samuelsson (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon HS) led the Greyhounds with eight goals and five assists for 21 points.

Sophomore Jim Feimster (Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mountain HS) added five goals and four assists, while junior Anthony Merz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan HS) contributed three goals and one assist. Juniors Matt Sprague (Souderton, PA/Souderton HS) and Mike Grillo (Pennington, NJ/Pennington School) each had one goal and one assist. Senior Wilson Gonzalez (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) added two goals and one assist, while sophomore Jon Thomas (Port Carbon, PA/Nativity BVM) had one goal and two assists. Junior Ken Macaulay (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) had one assist, while freshman Casey Hoffman (Kempton, PA/Northwestern Lehigh HS) also had one assist. Freshman Javier Maldonado (New Providence, NJ/New Providence HS) added one assist.

Also contributing were senior Brian Mack (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS), sophomore Ryan Wilkins (Hatboro, PA/Hatboro Horsham HS), and freshmen George Gray (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley HS), Philip Hedges (Falshear TX/Nativity BVM), Ryan Hintenach (Milford, NJ/Delaware Valley HS), and Ian Nuno (Middletown, DE/Caravel Academy).

Senior Ryan Sculley (Bethlehem, PA/Northampton HS), who was named to the All-Conference Second Team, played 1,357 minutes with a 1.53 GAA, 87 saves, a 9-5 record and 2 shutouts in goal. Junior Vinny Nasuta (Marlton, NJ/Rancocas Valley HS) played 735 minutes with a 1.96 GAA, 46 saves, a record of 3-4-2, and 2 shutouts. Freshman Ryan Walker (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen HS) saw 45 minutes of action with a 2.00 GAA and 6 saves.

Coach Lambinus expects to have 14 players return next season and with the postseason experience in the Commonwealth Conference and ECAC Tournaments, look for the Greyhounds to earn a fourth straight playoff appearance and challenge for their first NCAA Division III Tournament berth since 1982.
