Vs. Salisbury University at NCAA Regional - Lost 7-4

Moravian was eliminated from the 2002 NCAA Division III Regional with a 7-4 loss to Salisbury University in the first elimination game of the tournament. The Greyhounds finished the season with a record of 34-8, a school record for victories by any sport. Moravian fell behind 7-0 before sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka got the Greyhounds on the board with a two-run home run to dead center that scored senior catcher Stacy Matuczinski. Moravian added two runs in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI single by Soroka that scored freshman pinch runner Krissy Cianfichi and a RBI single by sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey that scored Matuczinski. The Greyhounds had 12 hits in the game with three each from Soroka and Brey but Moravian had nine runners left on base. Soroka led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, the 100th hit of her career. Soroka is the first Moravian sophomore to reach 100 career hits and the 15th player is school history to reach the plateau and the sixth this season. Sophomore Donna Weiner suffered the loss on the mound, allowing seven runs, six of them earned, on ten hits with three strikeouts.

Vs. Rowan University at NCAA Regional - Lost 4-2 (nine innings)

The Greyhounds dropped their first game of the 2002 NCAA Division III Regional to Rowan University, 4-2, in nine innings. Moravian, the second seed in the tournament, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI double by senior first baseman Sarah Leiby that scored sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka. After Rowan, the third seed, tied the game with a run in the top of the third inning, Moravian retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a suicide squeeze bunt by senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler scored freshman pinch runner Stephanie Eddinger. The Profs tied the game in the top of the sixth with a solo home run by Nicole Hewitt. Rowan won the game in the top of the ninth on a two-run homer by Erin Byrne. The Greyhounds had ten hits in the game but left eight runners on base including five in scoring position. Leiby was two-for-four in the contest while senior outfielder Summer Miller was two-for-three with a double. Senior pitcher Rachel Mowrey suffered the loss on the mound, allowing four earned runs on 12 hits with two walks and four strikeouts in game. The loss snapped Moravian's ten-game winning streak.

Vs. Albright College at Commonwealth Championship - Won 6-0

Moravian earned its second straight Commonwealth Conference Championship and its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III National Tournament with a 6-0 victory over third seeded Albright College in the 2002 Commonwealth Conference Championship Game at Lebanon Valley College. The Greyhounds, the top seed in the tournament, have won a school record 34 games this season. Senior pitcher Rachel Mowrey tossed a four-hit shutout with one strikeout to run her season record to 16-3. Mowrey has won her last 17 games against Commonwealth Conference opponents and the victory was also the 50th of her career. The Greyhounds gave Mowrey all the offense she would need in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka singled to lead off the game and she scored on a RBI double to right centerfield by sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey. Brey would drive in the Greyhounds second run in the bottom of the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly that plated senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler. Soroka gave Mowrey some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a grand slam down the left field line, her first homer of the season. Rentschler, freshman pinch runner Ashley Hughes, freshman outfielder Krissy Cianfichi all scored on the homer. Soroka was three-for- four in the game and needs just two hits to become the first Moravian sophomore to reach 100 career hits in her career while Brey increased her school records for doubles to 15, RBIs to 51 and total bases to 88. Sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito was two-for-three in the victory as the Greyhounds had eight hits.

Vs. Albright College at Commonwealth Playoffs - Won 8-0 (five innings)

The Greyhounds earned a berth in the 2002 Commonwealth Conference Championship game with an 8-0, five-inning victory over third seed Albright College in a winners bracket game. Moravian, the top seed, scored three times in the bottom of the second and the Greyhounds added five tallies in the bottom of the third. Sophomore pitcher Donna Weiner scattered three hits and allowed one walk to earn the victory on the mound. In the second inning, senior catcher Stacy Matuczinski drove in the only run Weiner would need with a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito. Freshman outfielder Krissy Cianfichi hit a bunt single that scored senior designated player Deb Noble and Cianfichi scored on an Albright error. The Greyhounds scored five runs with two-outs in the third. Senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler hit a RBI single to score senior first baseman Sarah Leiby. Matuczinski drove in Noble with a double to left center. Rentschler would score on an Albright error and Matuczinski scored on a single by sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka. Cianfichi scored the run that instituted the international tiebreaker when Soroka go into an intentional rundown. The Greyhounds, who extended their winning streak to nine, had seven hits in the contest with Soroka going two-for-three.

Vs. Susquehanna University at Commonwealth Playoffs - Won 6-1

Moravian, the top-seed, opened the 2002 Commonwealth Conference Playoffs at Lebanon Valley College with a 6-1 victory over fourth seeded Susquehanna University. Senior pitcher Rachel Mowrey allowed just one earned run on three hits. She allowed two walks and one base runner reached on an error as Mowrey had a no-hitter going through 5 1/3 innings. At the plate, the Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when senior first baseman Sarah Leiby singled home freshman shortstop Heather Bortz and sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey scored when Leiby got into an intentional rundown. Moravian tacked on a run in the fourth inning on a RBI single by senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler, which scored freshman pinch runner Stephanie Eddinger. The Greyhounds scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run triple by senior designated player Deb Noble that scored sophomore pinch runner Megan Smith and freshman pinch runner Ashley Hughes. Sophomore Jenn Hastings pinch ran for Noble and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Summer Miller. The Greyhounds had seven hits in the game with Noble going two-for-three.

Vs. Albright College - Won 5-2

The Greyhounds clinched the top spot in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs with a 5-2 victory over Albright College. The win gave Moravian its fifth straight sweep in a conference doubleheader and extended the team's conference winning streak to 11 straight and the squad's overall winning streak to seven consecutive wins. The Greyhounds had to rally from a 2-1 deficit in the contest. Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly to right field by senior catcher Stacy Matuczinski, which scored senior outfielder Summer Miller. After Albright took the lead in the top of the fourth inning with two runs, Moravian answered with four tallies in the bottom of the inning. The Greyhounds tied the game on a two-RBI double by sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito that scored freshman shortstop Heather Bortz and sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey. Senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler also hit a two-RBI double to the gap in right center, scoring senior first baseman Sarah Leiby and Esposito. Sophomore Donna Weiner improved to 11-3 on the mound, allowing the two runs, only one was earned on nine hits with one walk. Moravian had one hit each from nine different players in the game. The Greyhounds finish the regular season with 31 victories, the most by any Moravian team in the regular season and two wins shy of tying the school record of 33 set by the Greyhounds last spring.

Vs. Albright College - Won 7-0

Moravian moved within one game of clinching the top spot in the upcoming Commonwealth Conference playoffs with a 7-0 victory over Albright College in the first game of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader on Senior Day. The Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning a bases loaded walk to senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler that scored sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito and a RBI ground out by senior catcher Stacy Matuczinski, which scored senior designated player Deb Noble. Senior pitcher Rachel Mowrey took the game over from there, allowing just four hits in the game. Mowrey, who set down 15 batters in order after allowing a leadoff hit in the top of the second, also struck out four batters in the victory, her 14th of the season. The Greyhounds added a run in the bottom of the third when senior first baseman Sarah Leiby made it all the way to third base on a dropped fly ball in the outfield with two outs. Esposito followed with a RBI single for a 3-0 lead. Moravian put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Noble hit a RBI single to score Leiby and senior outfielder Summer Miller singled to score Esposito. Noble would score on a wild pitch before freshman pinch runner Stephanie Eddinger scored while Rentschler got in an intentional rundown while stealing second base. Leiby and Noble were each two-for-three in the game while Esposito was two-for-four as the Greyhounds had nine hits.

At William Paterson (NJ) University - Canceled

A doubleheader between two of the top 20 teams in the nation will not happen this year as #20 Moravian has had its non-conference twinbill at ninth-ranked William Paterson (NJ) University canceled due to rain. The doubleheader will not be rescheduled due to postseason playoff schedules for both teams.

At Juniata College - 2nd game Postponed until April 30th

The Greyhounds had the second game of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Juniata College postponed due to rain and poor field conditions. Moravian and Juniata had started the game and were in the second inning when the umpires determined the field was no longer playable. The game will be played at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30th only if it is needed in the Commonwealth Conference standings to determine playoff seeding.

At Juniata College - Won 17-4

Moravian clinched its eighth straight berth in the postseason and ran its Commonwealth Conference winning streak to nine straight games as the Greyhounds defeated Juniata College, 17-4, in the first game of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader. Moravian allowed three first inning runs to the Eagles, two of them unearned, before taking the lead for good in the second inning with five runs. Senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler started the scoring when she knocked in sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito on a fielder's choice. Freshman shortstop Heather Bortz drew a bases loaded walk to push the second run across the plate and sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey emptied the bases with a three-run double. The Greyhounds made their lead 6-3 in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI single by Bortz that scored freshman outfielder Krissy Cianfichi. The Eagles pulled with 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homerun by Becky Herr. The Greyhounds scored twice in the top of the fifth inning on a RBI single by sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka and a passed ball. Moravian would add nine runs in the top of the seventh inning, sending 14 batters to the plate. Brey drove in the first run with a RBI single and senior first baseman Sarah Leiby followed with a RBI single. Esposito hit a two-run doubles before Leiby scored on an error. Senior outfielder Summer Miller drove in a run with a ground out and junior pinch hitter Kim Gehman had a RBI double. The final two runs crossed the plate on an error and a passed ball. Moravian had 16 hits in the game with Esposito going four-for-five. Bortz, Brey, Soroka and Cianfichi each had two hits with Brey driving in four runs and Bortz and Esposito each having two RBIs. Brey added a double, tying the single season record of 14 and she extended her school record for RBIs to 49 this spring. Senior Rachel Mowrey earned the victory on the mound to improve to 13-3 on the season. Mowrey allowed four runs, only two earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out four batters.

Vs. Lebanon Valley College - Won 9-1 (6 innings)

The Greyhounds won their fourth straight Commonwealth Conference doubleheader and are now one win away from their eighth straight postseason appearance, taking the second game of a Commonwealth Conference twinbill from Lebanon Valley College, 9-1 in six innings. The Flying Dutchmen scored their only run of the second game in the top of the first inning on a RBI single. Moravian answered in the bottom of the first with sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka leading off with a double and scoring on a wild pitch. Moravian took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Soroka and freshman shortstop Heather Bortz. The Greyhounds scored a run in the third inning on a one-out solo homerun to left field by sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito. Bortz had another RBI single in the fourth inning. The Greyhounds ended the game with four runs in the sixth inning with all four runs scoring on errors. Bortz was three-for-three in the second game with two RBIs while freshman outfielder Krissy Cianfichi and Soroka were each two-for-three. Sophomore pitcher Donna Weiner moved to 10-3 on the season with the victory and she had one strikeout while allowing six hits.

Vs. Lebanon Valley College - Won 7-3

Moravian ran its Commonwealth Conference winning streak to seven with a 7-3 victory over Lebanon Valley College in the first game of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader. The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the first game when senior designated player Deb Noble drove in sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka with a RBI single. The Flying Dutchmen tied the game in the top of the fourth. Moravian took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey hit a grand slam to left field to score Soroka, senior catcher Stacy Matuczinski and freshman shortstop Heather Bortz. The dinger was Brey’s tenth of the season and her second grand slam this week. The homer also gives her 81 total bases on the season, setting a new Moravian record. Lebanon Valley got a run back in the sixth inning with a RBI. The Greyhounds tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles by senior first baseman Sarah Leiby and freshman outfielder Krissy Cianfichi. The Flying Dutchmen scored the final run of the game on a RBI single in the seventh. For the Greyhounds, Soroka was four-for-four in the game while Bortz and Leiby were each three-for-four with Bortz adding a triple and Leiby adding a double. Cianfichi was two-for-two. Senior pitcher Rachel Mowrey improved to 12-3 on the season for Moravian with the win. She struck out three batters in the win.

At Delaware Valley College - Won 8-0 (6 innings)

The Greyhounds earned a doubleheader sweep of Delaware Valley College in non-conference action, taking the second game, 8-0 in six innings. Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Senior first baseman Sarah Leiby hit a sacrifice fly to left to score sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka and freshman Heather Bortz came around to score when the throw from left field went out of play. The Greyhounds made the lead 3-0 in the second inning when sophomore designated player Jenn Hastings led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Stacy Matuczinski. Sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey hit a one-out double in the third inning and scored on a single and error on a ball hit by Leiby. Moravian added two runs in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Soroka and a RBI double by Brey. The Greyhounds closed out the game in the sixth inning with runs scoring on a RBI single by junior third baseman Kim Gehman and a sacrifice fly by Leiby. Brey was two-for-three in the contest while Hastings was two-for-four and Leiby added two RBIs. Moravian had a total of 11 hits in the game. Freshman Ashley Hughes earned her third victory of the season, scattering four hits while walking two and striking out three.

At Delaware Valley College - Won 21-10

Moravian rallied from a 10-6 deficit with 15 runs in the final two innings to earn a 21-10 victory over Delaware Valley College in non-conference action. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Moravian scored on RBI singles by sophomore outfielders Melissa Soroka and Jessica Esposito and freshman shortstop Heather Bortz. The Greyhounds’ scored two runs on an error and another on a wild pitch. Delaware Valley scored four runs in the third inning and only one was earned. The Aggies took a 10-6 lead with six unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth. Moravian retook the lead with a nine-run sixth inning. Sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey got the scoring started in the inning with her eighth homerun of the season, a solo shot to left field with one out. Brey also added a two-run single later in the inning while senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler and senior catcher Stacy Matuczinski each had RBI singles. Moravian other four runs scored on two Delaware Valley errors, a wild pitch and a passed ball. The Greyhounds added six runs in the top of the seventh inning on a bases-loaded walk to Bortz, a grand slam to left by Brey and a wild pitch. The Greyhounds ended the game with 21 hits. Brey was four-for-five in the game with her two homeruns and seven RBIs tying her own school records and her ten total bases setting a new Greyhound single game mark, breaking her own record. Brey now has 40 RBIs on the season, breaking the Moravian single season mark of 37 set by Tanya Thear in 1994. Senior outfielder Summer Miller was three-for-six in the game with her single in the second inning giving her 100 hits for her career. Miller is the 14th player in school history to reach 100 career hits and the fifth member of the senior class to get there this season. Matuczinski was two-for-three in the game while Esposito, Rentschler and senior designated player Deb Noble were each two-for-four. Bortz was two-for-five at the plate and drove in two runs. Senior Rachel Mowrey earned the victory on the mound for Moravian, her 11th of the season. Mowrey pitched three innings and allowed two unearned runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Sophomore hurler Jessica Naugle pitched the first four-plus innings of the game, allowing eight runs; only one was earned, on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

At Muhlenberg College - Lost 5-3

Rival Muhlenberg College earned a doubleheader sweep of Moravian, winning the second game of the twinbill 5-3, to climb back within one point in the annual Matte Award standings between the two schools, 8-7. The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a one-out, bases-loaded single by sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito. However, the Greyhounds would leave the bases full and a total of eight runners on base in the game. After the Mules tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, Moravian took a 3-1 when freshman shortstop Heather Bortz and sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey scored on a ball hit by sophomore designated player Jenn Hastings that was kicked into centerfield by the Muhlenberg shortstop. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Greyhounds, one of the top 20 fielding teams in the nation, committed three errors and allowed four unearned runs as the Mules took a 5-3 lead. Bortz led Moravian at the plate with a three-for-four performance. Sophomore Donna Weiner took the loss on the mound, her third of the year and she gave up five hits while walking one and striking out one. The losses in both games of the doubleheader mark the first time this season that Moravian has lost two games on the same day.

At Muhlenberg College - Lost 1-0

The Greyhounds had their seven-game winning streak snapped, dropping the first game of a non-conference doubleheader to rival Muhlenberg College, 1-0. Moravian had just three hits in the game, singles by senior first baseman Sarah Leiby, sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka and freshman outfielder Krissy Cianfichi, and the Greyhounds left seven runners on base including four at third base. Senior Rachel Mowrey suffered her third loss of the season on the mound, allowing just one earned run on three hits with one strikeout and one hit batter, which scored the games only run.

At Juniata College - Postponed until April 21st

Moravian had its Commonwealth Conference twinbill at Juniata College postponed until Sunday, April 21st due to rain. The Greyhounds had made the trip to Huntingdon for the doubleheader and were leading 3-0 early in the first game when the skies opened up and forced the postponement.

Vs. Dickinson College - Won 5-0

Moravian swept its third straight doubleheader and ran its winning streak to seven straight games, defeating Dickinson College, 5-0, in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader. The game was scoreless into the bottom of the fourth inning before sophomore designated player Jenn Hastings connected on a two-run homerun, the first of her career, to left center to score freshman shortstop Heather Bortz and give freshman pitcher Ashley Hughes all the offense she would need. The Greyhounds added three more runs in the sixth inning when sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey led off the inning with a double and scored on a Dickinson error. Senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler and senior pinch hitter Deb Noble each added a RBI singles in the inning. The Greyhounds had just six hits in the victory, two off the bat of Bortz. Hughes improved to 2-0 on the season, scattering three hits and walking four while striking out five batters.

Vs. Dickinson College - Won 7-0

Sophomore pitcher Jessica Naugle tossed a five-hit shutout and sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey connected on her seventh homerun of the season to lead the Greyhounds to a 7-0 victory over Dickinson College in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader. The victory was also the 250th of head coach John Byrne's nine-year career as Moravian's head coach. Byrne had a record of 250-97 after the win. Brey gave Naugle all the offense she would need in the bottom of the first inning, driving a 0-2 pitch over the fence in dead center for a solo homer. Moravian added two runs in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito scored on an error and senior catcher Stacy Matuczinski crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Matuczinski would give Moravian a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning when she scored on a delayed steal of home while freshman shortstop Heather Bortz got into an intentional rundown. The Greyhounds scored their final three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a RBI single by Matuczinski, a passed ball to score sophomore designated player Jenn Hastings and a RBI ground out by freshman infielder Leah Holmes. Moravian only had six hits in the game. Naugle tossed her second complete game and improved to 3-0 on the season, scattering the five hits and stranding eight runners on base (the other three reached on Moravian errors). Naugle also struck out five batters.

At Elizabethtown College - Won 3-1

The Greyhounds swept their third straight Commonwealth Conference twinbill, winning the second game of a doubleheader with Elizabethtown College, 3-1. Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game number two as sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka led off the game with a walk and freshman shortstop Heather Bortz followed with a bunt base hit. After a double-steal put the runners at second and third, sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey hit a ground out to score Soroka and sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito doubled home Bortz. Moravian took a 3-0 lead in the third inning when senior first baseman Sarah Leiby started the inning off with a double and Esposito followed with a RBI single. Elizabethtown scored its lone run of the afternoon in the bottom of the sixth inning on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Esposito and senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler were each two-for-three in the game as Moravian had nine hits, five for extra-bases including doubles by Esposito, Leiby, Soroka and freshman outfielder Krissy Cianfichi and a triple by Rentschler. Sophomore hurler Donna Weiner improved to 9-2 on the year with the victory.  Weiner allowed the one run on five hits and three walks while striking out one.

At Elizabethtown College - Won 5-0

Moravian won its fourth straight game, taking the first game of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with Elizabethtown College, 5-0. Freshman shortstop Heather Bortz was three-for-three in the game with four RBIs while senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler was two-for-three. The Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning when senior catcher Stacy Matuczinski led off the inning with a double.  Rentschler hit an infield single for the 100th hit of her Moravian career, the 13th Greyhound to get 100 career hits and second in two games. After a sacrifice bunt to get the runners to second and third and a ground out, Bortz delivered a two-run triple to right centerfield. Moravian extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning when Rentschler led off with a single and moved to second base when freshman outfielder Krissy Cianfichi reached on a fielder’s choice. After another sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third, Bortz delivered two-run single. Bortz would score Moravian’s final run in the seventh inning after reaching base on a two-out single.  Sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey hit double to left center to score Bortz. Senior Rachel Mowrey moved to 10-2 on the season, scattering six hits while striking out two in her fifth shutout of the year.

At Widener University - Won 6-1

The Greyhounds swept a Commonwealth Conference twinbill from Widener University, winning the second game 6-1. The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when freshman shortstop Heather Bortz hit a RBI single to score sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka. Moravian made its lead 2-0 in the third inning when sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey led off the inning with a solo homerun, her sixth homer of the season, breaking her own single season record of five and extending her school career record to 11 dingers. The Greyhounds added four runs in the top of the fourth inning with a RBI double by Soroka that scored senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler, an error, a RBI double by Brey and a sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito. The Greyhounds had 12 hits in the game with two each from Soroka, Brey, senior first baseman Sarah Leiby and sophomore first baseman Jenn Hastings. Leiby's second hit of the day was the 100th of her career, the 12th player to reach the milestone. Sophomore Donna Weiner improved to 8-2 on the mound this season, allowing an unearned run on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

At Widener University - Won 11-0

Moravian won the first game of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader from Widener University, 11-0 in five innings. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a Widener error and RBI singles by sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito and senior designated player Deb Noble. Moravian added three more runs in the top of the third inning on a RBI single by Esposito, a RBI ground out by Noble and a RBI single by senior catcher Stacy Matuczinski. The Greyhounds finished off the game in the top of the fifth inning with five runs. The first run came in on Noble's second RBI single of the game. Matuczinski plated the second run with a RBI single and she scored on an error. Sophomore Megan Smith hit a sacrifice fly to score senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler and freshman infielder Leah Holmes hit a RBI single to finish out the scoring. Freshman shortstop Heather Bortz and Esposito were each three-for-three in the game with Esposito contributing two RBIs. Senior first baseman Sarah Leiby, Noble and Matuczinski were each two-for-three with Noble driving in three and Matuczinski knocking in two runs. Senior pitcher Rachel Mowrey earned her ninth victory of the season on the mound, allowing just three hits while striking out three for her fourth shutout of the year.

At Rowan University - Won 3-1

The Greyhounds took the second contest of a non-conference doubleheader from nationally ranked Rowan University, 3-1. The twinbill matched two of the top teams in the NCAA Division III East Region and in the nation as Rowan is ranked 14th in the nation and Moravian is ranked 21st. Sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka led off the top of the first inning by reaching base on an error and she would score on a double to right centerfield by sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey. Brey moved to third on a single by senior outfielder Sarah Leiby and Brey scored on a passed ball. The Greyhounds would make the lead 3-0 in the fourth inning when Brey led off with a triple to the right centerfield gap and a RBI single by Leiby. Brey was two-for-two while Leiby was two-for-three in the contest. Rowan scored its run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI single. Moravian sophomore Donna Weiner improved to 7-2 on the mound this season, allowing just the one run on five hits while walking one batter and hitting one batter.

At Rowan University - Lost 5-0

Moravian dropped the first game of a non-conference doubleheader to nationally ranked Rowan University, 5-0. The twinbill matched two of the top teams in the NCAA Division III East Region and in the nation as Rowan is ranked 14th in the nation and Moravian is ranked 21st. The loss snapped Moravian’s six-game winning streak and the shutout was just the second time the Greyhounds have been blanked this season. The Profs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game on a double and a single. Rowan added two runs in the second inning and single runs on the fifth and sixth innings. For the Greyhounds, senior catcher Stacy Matuczinski and freshman shortstop Heather Bortz were each two-for-three while sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka was two-for-four. The team had eight singles in the game. Moravian had runners at second and third in the third inning with one out and the bases loaded in the fifth inning but was unable to score. Senior Rachel Mowrey suffered her second loss of the season on the mound, allowing five runs, two of which were earned, on nine hits with one strikeout.

Vs. Susquehanna University - Won 6-2

Sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey broke the Moravian career record for homeruns with her tenth homer in just 50 career games to lead the Greyhounds to a 6-2 victory in the second game of a Commonwealth Conference twinbill with Susquehanna University, giving Moravian a sweep of the Crusaders. Brey hit the first pitch she saw in the fourth inning over the right-centerfield fence and onto the track at Steel Field for a grand slam, giving the Greyhounds a 6-1 lead in the game. Susquehanna had a 1-0 lead in the first inning but saw that disappear in the second as Moravian senior catcher Stacy Matuczinski delivered a two-out, two-run single that scored seniors outfielder Summer Miller and second baseman Laurie Rentschler. At the plate for the Greyhounds, freshman shortstop Heather Bortz and senior first baseman Sarah Leiby were each three-for-four in the game while sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka was two-for-three. Sophomore hurler Donna Weiner earned her sixth victory of the season, allowing two runs on five hits with one strikeout.

Vs. Susquehanna University - Won 7-3

Sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey connected on a two-run homerun in the fifth inning to give Moravian a 5-1 lead in a 7-3 victory over Susquehanna University in the first game of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader. Brey's homer was her fourth of the season and the ninth of her career, tying the Moravian career record. Her shot was to dead centerfield over the 215-foot sign. The Greyhounds opened the game with a 2-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka led off with a triple. Sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito hit a two-out RBI double to score Soroka and Esposito would score when senior first baseman Sarah Leiby got in an intentional rundown. Moravian extended its lead to 3-0 in the third inning on a two-out double by Esposito and a RBI single by Leiby. Susquehanna's Shelly Zimmerman hit a solo homerun in the fourth inning before Brey hit her homer in the fifth. Brey's round-tripper scored Soroka, who had led off the inning with an infield single. The Greyhounds tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to make the lead 7-1. Freshman shortstop Heather Bortz connected on a two-out RBI single that scored freshman Leah Holmes. Bortz scored on a double by Brey that was just inches from clearing the right field fence for her second homer of the game. Brey was two-for-four in the game with three RBIs while Esposito was three-for-four with two doubles and two runs. Leiby was also three-for-four and Soroka was two-for-four with two runs. Senior Rachel Mowrey earned her eighth win of the season on the mound, allowing three runs on nine hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

At Haverford College - Won 13-1

Moravian completed the doubleheader sweep of Haverford College, winning the nightcap, 13-1. Freshman Ashley Hughes earned her first career victory on the mound, allowing just an unearned run on five hits and a walk while striking out five. The Greyhounds took a 4-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI single by freshman outfielder Krissy Cianfichi, a sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka and a two-RBI double off the bat of freshman shortstop Leah Holmes. Moravian added two runs in the fourth inning on a RBI double by sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey and an infielder ground by freshman outfielder Stephanie Eddinger. The Greyhounds tacked on a single run in the sixth on a ground out by Brey before scoring six times in the top of the seventh inning. Cianfichi, Holmes, Brey, Eddinger, sophomore catcher Jenn Hastings and senior outfielder Sarah Leiby each had RBI singles. Cianfichi finished the game three-for-four with three runs scored and two RBIs while Brey was three-for-five with three RBIs and two doubles. Holmes went two-for-four with three RBIs while sophomore second baseman Megan Smith was two-for-four with a pair of runs. Hastings was two-for-five in the contest.

At Haverford College - Won 8-0

The Greyhounds won the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Haverford College, 8-0, in six innings. Sophomore Jessica Naugle tossed Moravian's second no-hitter of the season, allowing just one walk while striking out three for her second victory of the year. Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey doubled home freshman shortstop Leah Holmes. The Greyhounds added two runs in the second inning on a RBI single by senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler and a delayed steal of home by senior outfielder Summer Miller. Moravian would make the lead 5-0 in the third inning on a two-run double by Miller. The Greyhounds scored a single run in the fifth inning when Brey scored on a passed ball. Moravian ended the game by the eight-run rule with a pair of runs in the sixth inning, both scoring on passed balls. Brey was three-for-five in the game with three doubles while Miller and junior first baseman Kim Gehman were each two-for-two.

Vs. Ursinus College - Won 7-0

Moravian completed the doubleheader sweep of Ursinus College, winning the nightcap, 7-0, in a game shortened to six innings by darkness. The Greyhounds took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI singles by senior designated player Summer Miller and senior catcher Stacy Matuczinski and a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman Kim Gehman. The Greyhounds added three more runs in the second inning on a RBI single by sophomore second baseman Megan Smith and two Ursinus errors. The Greyhounds finished the scoring in the fifth inning with a RBI grounder off the bat of senior first baseman Sarah Leiby with the bases loaded. Moravian had nine different players with hits in the game. Sophomore Donna Weiner earned the victory on the mound, her fifth of the season. Weiner scattered three hits and allowed one walk while striking out three in the victory.

Vs. Ursinus College - Won 4-2

The Greyhounds won the first game of a non-conference doubleheader with Ursinus College, 4-2. Moravian jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a delayed steal of home by freshman shortstop Leah Holmes, a RBI single by senior designated player Deb Noble and an Ursinus error. The Greyhounds extended their lead to 4-0 in the second inning when senior Laurie Rentschler scored on a throw after a single by Holmes. Holmes was two-for-four in the game with two stolen bases while sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka was two-for-three with a double and a stolen base. Senior pitcher Rachel Mowrey earned her seventh victory of the season, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out four. One of the runs Mowrey allowed was unearned.

Vs. Ursinus College - Postponed until March 27th

Moravian postponed its non-conference doubleheader with Ursinus College for one day due to rain. The twinbill will be played on Wednesday, March 27th at 2:45 p.m. in Bethlehem.

Vs. Messiah College - Lost 3-1

The Greyhounds dropped the second game of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader to Messiah College, 3-1. Moravian left nine runners on base in the game including five in scoring position. Freshman shortstop Heather Bortz was three-for-three in the contest and scored Moravian's lone run in the fourth inning on a double by sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito. Sophomore Donna Weiner suffered the loss on the mound, allowing three runs on five hits with four walks and one strikeout in 5 1/3 innings. Senior Rachel Mowrey allowed one hit and one walk and had one strikeout while pitching the final 1 2/3 innings.

Vs. Messiah College - Won 4-0

The Greyhounds opened the 2002 Commonwealth Conference season with a 4-0 victory over Messiah College. Senior pitcher Rachel Mowrey tossed her second one-hitter of the season, allowing just three base runners while striking out one for her sixth victory of the year. The Greyhounds gave Mowrey all the offense she would need with three runs in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey, a Messiah error and a two-out RBI double by senior first baseman Sarah Leiby. Moravian scored a single run in the fifth inning on a two-out RBI double by sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito that scored freshman shortstop Heather Bortz.

Vs. Haverford College - Postponed until March 28th

Moravian's 2002 home opener with Haverford was postponed due to poor field conditions in Bethlehem. The twinbill has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 28th at 3:00 p.m. and it will be played at Haverford instead of Moravian as originally scheduled.

At Muhlenberg College - Postponed until April 16th

The Greyhounds had their non-conference doubleheader with Muhlenberg College at Patriots Park in Allentown postponed until April 16th at 2:00 p.m. due to field conditions.

Vs. Western Maryland College - Won 9-7

Moravian closed out its trip to the Salisbury Sea Gull Invitational with a 9-7, come-from-behind victory over Western Maryland College. The Greyhounds led 2-0 early in the game on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey in the first inning and an executed delayed steal in the third inning that scored senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler. However, the Greyhounds would give up seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to fall behind, 7-2. Moravian would tie the game in the fifth inning with five runs. Freshman shortstop Heather Bortz scored on an error to start the inning before junior first baseman Kim Gehman hit a three-run triple to pull Moravian within one. Senior outfielder Summer Miller singled to score Gehman and tie the score. Moravian took the lead in the sixth inning when Gehman hit a two-run double. Bortz was three-for-five in the game while Rentschler was three-for-four. Gehman finished two-for-two with five RBIs. Sophomore Donna Weiner picked up her fourth win of the season on the mound, allowing three earned runs with two walks and one strikeout.

Vs. Wilkes University - Lost 3-2 (9 innings)

The Greyhounds dropped a tough 3-2, nine-inning decision to Wilkes University in Moravian's first game on the second day of the Salisbury Sea Gull Invitational. The game was tied at 0-0 after the regulation seven innings and the two schools used the international tiebreaker (starting the inning with a runner on second base) to help determine a winner. Wilkes scored in the top of the eighth inning to take a 1-0 lead before Moravian tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler hitting a one-out single down the right field line to score freshman Krissy Cianfichi. Wilkes took the lead again in the top of the ninth inning with two runs. The Greyhounds managed just one run in the bottom of the ninth inning with sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka scoring on ground out by sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito. Moravian left the tying run on third base in the inning. The Greyhounds had just five hits in the game with two coming off the bat of freshman shortstop Heather Bortz. Senior hurler Rachel Mowrey suffered her first loss of the season on the mound, allowing ten hits and striking out two. Mowrey is only charged with one run in the game due to the international tiebreaker. 

Vs. Salisbury (MD) University - Won 1-0

Moravian bounced back from its first loss of the year with a 1-0 victory over Salisbury University, who was ranked 11th in the nation in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason poll. Senior pitcher Rachel Mowrey scattered eight hits in the win and she allowed one walk and had one strikeouts. The Greyhounds scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning when sophomore Janelle Brey reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Sarah Leiby.  Brey moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. Moravian had just two hits in the game, singles by sophomore Melissa Soroka and freshman Heather Bortz.

Vs. Lynchburg (VA) College - Lost 1-0

The Greyhounds lost their first game of the season to Lynchburg (VA) College in the opening round of the Salisbury Sea Gull Invitational in Salisbury, MD. Sophomore hurler Donna Weiner allowed just two hits in the contest while walking one and striking out four. The Hornets scored the lone run of the game in the second inning on a Moravian error. The Greyhounds had five hits in the game, all singles, from seniors Sarah Leiby, Summer Miller and Stacy Matuczinski and sophomores Janelle Brey and Jessica Esposito.

Vs. Virginia Wesleyan College - Won 10-1

Moravian finished its spring break trip with an 8-0 record after a 10-1, five-inning victory over host Virginia Wesleyan College at the Virginia Wesleyan Challenge. The Greyhounds were 4-0 in the tournament. Moravian trailed 1-0 after the top of the first inning but the Greyhounds responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Jessica Esposito had a two-RBI single in the first and senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler added a two-run ground rule double. Sophomore first baseman Jenn Hastings had a two-RBI double to end the game. Senior Rachel Mowrey earned her fourth victory of the season on the mound, allowing five hits while striking out three batters.

Vs. Chowan (NC) College - Won 4-0

The Greyhounds opened the second day of the Virginia Wesleyan College Challenge with a 4-0 victory over Chowan (NC) College. Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-RBI double by senior designated hitter Deb Noble. Sophomore outfielders Jessica Esposito and Melissa Soroka each drove in a run with a RBI single. Esposito was two-for-four in the game with a double. Sophomore pitcher Donna Weiner tossed a two-hit shutout in the game with seven strikeouts for her third win of the season.

Vs. Randolph-Macon (VA) College - Won 11-0

Moravian ran its winning streak to six straight games with an 11-0 victory over Randolph-Macon (VA) College at the Virginia Wesleyan Challenge in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The Greyhounds ripped out 13 hits in the game with three hits from freshman outfielder Krissy Cianfichi and two hits from junior infielder Kim Gehman and sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka. Gehman and Soroka each had doubles in the win while sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey and freshman shortstop Leah Holmes each had two RBIs. Sophomore second baseman Megan Smith drove in four runs in the game with three coming on a homerun in the fourth inning. Smith's homer was Moravian's seventh of the season in six games. Sophomore Jessica Naugle picked up her first win of the year on the mound, tossing three innings and allowing one hit while striking out three. Freshman Ashley Hughes threw two innings of hitless relief for the shutout. 

Vs. Christopher Newport (VA) University - Won 7-2

The Greyhounds opened the Virginia Wesleyan Challenge with a 7-2 victory over Christopher Newport (VA) University. Moravian jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning on a RBI single by sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey, a two-run single by senior designated player Deb Noble and a RBI double by sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito. Esposito would provide the Greyhounds with their other three runs with a three-run homerun in the fifth inning. Brey was four-for-four in the game while Esposito went three-for-three. Noble connected for two hits in the game including the 100th of her career, making her the second Greyhound this week to reach 100 career hits and the 11th all-time. Senior pitcher Rachel Mowrey moved to 3-0 on the season with the win. Mowrey allowed five hits, including two solo homeruns and had one strikeout on the mound. 

Vs. Becker (MA) College - Won 10-0

Sophomore pitcher Donna Weiner and freshman hurler Ashley Hughes combined to toss a no-hitter as Moravian closed out its spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with a 10-0, six inning victory over Becker (MA) College. Weiner tossed five perfect innings with three strikeouts and Hughes threw one inning with two strikeouts and a walk in her first collegiate action. At the plate, Moravian pounded out 17 hits with freshman shortstop Leah Holmes and sophomore first baseman Jenn Hastings each collecting three hits. Senior catcher Sarah Leiby, sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito and freshman outfielder Krissy Cianfichi each had two hits in the contest. Hastings and Leiby each drove in three runs while senior designated hitter Deb Noble connected on a solo homerun, Moravian's fifth homer in four games this season. Senior Stacy Matuczinski hit a two-out single in the top of the sixth inning to become the tenth player in Moravian history to collect 100 hits in a career. Junior third baseman Kim Gehman had two RBIs in the victory. 

Vs. Bridgewater (VA) College - Won 1-0

Senior pitcher Rachel Mowrey tossed a one-hitter and sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey hit a solo homerun in the first inning to lead the Greyhounds to a 1-0 victory over Bridgewater (VA) College in Myrtle Beach, SC. Mowrey had a perfect game through 6 2/3 innings before giving up a base hit. Mowrey forced the next batter into a pop fly to end the game. Moravian had just four hits in the game with one being Brey's homerun, the eighth of her career and one shy of the Moravian record. Senior first baseman Sarah Leiby, senior second baseman Laurie Rentschler and sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito each had singles in the victory. 

Vs. University of Charleston (WV) - Won 17-5

The Greyhounds erupted to ten runs in the top seventh inning to open a 12-run lead in a 17-5 victory over NCAA Division II University of Charleston (WV) in a Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach, SC. Moravian led 2-0 in the first inning on a one-out, two-run homerun by sophomore second baseman Janelle Brey. Brey finished the game two-for-four with seven RBIs, breaking her own school record, and she had two homeruns, tying her own school record, including a grand slam in the seventh inning. Senior first baseman Sarah Leiby was three-for-five in the game with three RBIs, a double and a solo homerun in the fourth inning. Sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka was two-for-four with a RBI and a double while sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito was two-for-two with three RBIs and a triple. Sophomore Donna Weiner earned the victory on the mound, allowing five earned runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Vs. Carlow College - Won 7-3

Moravian opened its 2002 season with a 7-3 victory over Carlow College during the team's trip to Myrtle Beach during Spring Break. Senior outfielder Sarah Leiby and senior first baseman Deb Noble each went two-for-three with a RBI while sophomore outfielder Melissa Soroka was two-for-four with a RBI. Sophomore third baseman Janelle Brey had one hit with a two-run double in the fourth inning to extend Moravian's lead. Senior outfielder Summer Miller also had a two-run single in the first inning. Senior pitcher Rachel Mowrey picked up her first win of the season on the mound, allowing seven hits with five strikeouts.
