Moravian dropped a 9-2 decision to Salisbury (MD) University in the championship game of the 2003 NCAA Division III Regionals hosted by Ramapo College of New Jersey. The Greyhounds, the third seed in the tournament, end the season with a 32-10 record, and their best ever finish in the postseason. The two teams met three times in the double-elimination regional tournament with each team winning by a score of 3-2 before the championship game. The Sea Gulls, seeded second in the tournament, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring an unearned run on a pair of singles and a Moravian error. Salisbury extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning on an RBI-single by Leslie White. Moravian tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run home run down the left field line by junior first baseman Jenn Hastings to score junior outfielder Melissa Soroka. The homer was Hastings' first of the season. Salisbury came right back in the top of the fifth inning with a run on an RBI-single by Rosie Aley to take a 3-2 lead. The Sea Gulls put the game away with six runs in the top of the sixth inning. The first run scored on a bases loaded walk by Lisa Gentilella. Kate Garland drove in a run with an RBI-single before three runs scored on a single and a Moravian error on a ball hit by Aley. Karen Shaffer drove in the final run with an RBI-single. Moravian had five hits in the game with junior outfielder Jessica Esposito going two-for-three with a pair of doubles. Junior third baseman Janelle Brey and sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz each had singles in the game. Greyhound freshman pitcher Meagan Hennessy suffered the loss on the mound to end her debut season at 16-6. Hennessy allowed eight runs, only seven were earned, on 12 hits and three walks while fanning one. Junior pitcher Donna Weiner was touched for an unearned run and two hits in two innings of work. Weiner also has two strikeouts. Moravian did have five players named to the All-Tournament Team with Bortz, Brey, Esposito, Hennessy and Soroka being honored.

The Greyhounds had their eight-game winning streak snapped and suffered their first loss of the double-elimination 2003 NCAA Regionals at Ramapo College of New Jersey in a 3-2 contest against Salisbury (MD) University. The game was the second time in the tournament that the two schools had played with Moravian winning the first contest by the identical 3-2 score. The same two teams will meet on Monday at 12:00 p.m. for the Regional Championship and a berth in the 2003 NCAA Division III World Series in Salem, Virginia, which begins on Friday, May 16th. Moravian, the third seed in the regional, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Junior third baseman Janelle Brey drew a two-out walk and moved to second base on a single to left field by junior outfielder Melissa Soroka. Brey scored on a single to left field by junior first baseman Jenn Hastings. The Greyhounds extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning. Freshman catcher Kira Weller doubled to gap in left-center field with one out, and she scored on a two-out double to right-center field by sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi. However, Moravian, which had five hits in the game, had just a single by sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz and a walk by sophomore designated player Leah Holmes in the game's final five innings. Salisbury, the tournament's second seed, cut Moravian's lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a leadoff home run to left field by Katie Mullinix. The Sea Gulls pushed the winning runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lisa Gentilella drew a walk with two outs and stole second base. She scored the tying run on an infield single by Kate Garland. Garland also stole second base and scored the winning run on a single to center field by Mullinix. Moravian freshman pitcher Meagan Hennessy dropped to 16-5 on the season with the loss. Hennessy allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight batters.

Vs. Ramapo College of New Jersey in 2003 NCAA Regional - Won 9-4   Boxscore

Moravian, the third seed, moved one win away from its first ever trip to the NCAA Division III World Series with a 9-4 come-from-behind victory over top seed Ramapo College in the NCAA Regionals being played in Mahwah, New Jersey. The win puts Moravian in the championship game at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, and the Greyhounds must be defeated twice by a team still to be determined. Ramapo jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on back-to-back solo home runs by Lisa Rizzo and Laura Germano. The Roadrunners extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Germano, which scored Rizzo, who had walked with two outs in the inning. In the Moravian third inning, sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz had an infield single to break the Moravian school record with 63 hits in a season, passing the old record of 62 set by Christine Hill in 1997. The Greyhounds pushed a run across in the bottom of the fifth inning. After loading the bases with singles by sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi and Bortz and a walk by junior third baseman Janelle Brey, junior outfielder Melissa Soroka hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Cianfichi. However, Moravian left runners on second and third in the inning. The Greyhounds took a 9-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring eight times. Sophomore designated player Leah Holmes led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on ground out by junior outfielder Jessica Esposito. Freshman pinch hitter Richelle McWilliams singled to left field to move Holmes to thrid. Sophomore Stephanie Eddinger pinch ran for McWilliams and moved to second base on a walk by junior second baseman Megan Smith to load the bases. Cianfichi pushed the first run across the plate when she reached on an error to score Holmes. Bortz broke the game wide open with an inside-the-park grand slam to center field. The Ramapo outfielder made a diving attempt at Bortz's sinking line drive and the ball bounced all the way to the fence allowing all four runners to score. Brey kept the inning going with a double, her 15th of the season, and Soroka had an infield single. Junior first baseman Jenn Hastings drove in a Brey with a single to center field. Soroka moved to third on the play and Hastings moved to second on the throw home. Holmes hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Soroka, and Esposito drove in the final run of the inning with a single to left field that plated Hastings. Moravian finished the game with 11 hits with Bortz going three-for-four and Soroka going two-for-three. In the circle, junior Donna Weiner improved to 16-4 with the victory. Weiner allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four batters.

Vs. US Merchant Marine Academy in 2003 NCAA Regional - Won 10-3   Boxscore

Moravian won its opening contest of the 2003 NCAA Regionals, defeating the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 10-3. Moravian advances to face second seeded Salisbury (MD) University in its next game. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 5-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Junior third baseman Janelle Brey tripled to center field to score sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi and sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz, who had reached on infield singles. After giving up an unearned run in the top of the third inning, Moravian took an 8-1 lead in the bottom of the third when Hastings scored on another error after leading off the inning with a hit. The Greyhounds added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a single to left field by Hastings, which scored Soroka. Sophomore designated player Leah Holmes scored on an error in the outfield on the play. Moravian pounded out 12 hits in the game with Brey and junior outfielder Jessica Esposito each collecting three hits. In addition to her triple and home run, Brey had a double, and her attempt for the cycle was stopped by the Merchant Marine Academy catching a line drive. Esposito added a triple. Bortz and Hastings each had two hits in the contest. Bortz had a double while Soroka had two stolen bases. On the mound, junior Donna Weiner improved to 15-4. She allowed three runs, only two were earned, on seven hits. Weiner did not allow a walk while striking out a season high eight batters.

Vs. Elizabehtown College in 2003 Commonwealth Conference Tournament Championship - Won 2-0   Boxscore

Moravian won its third straight Commonwealth Conference Championship and earned its sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III National Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Elizabethtown College in the title game of the 2003 Commonwealth Conference Tournament played at Lebanon Valley College. The Greyhounds, who were the top seed in the tournament, have a 9-0 record in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament in its three years at Lebanon Valley. Greyhound freshman pitcher Meagan Hennessy scattered two hits and allowed just two walks while striking out nine batters to improve to 15-5 in her debut season at Moravian. The shutout was Hennessy's eighth of the season, tying Becky Stroup's school record from 1999 and 2000, and Hennessy had a no-hitter going through the first 5 2/3 innings of the game. Moravian scored its only runs of the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior first baseman Jenn Hastings doubled down the left field line with two outs to score sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz, who had walked, and junior outfielder Melissa Soroka, who had reached on an error. The Greyhounds managed just four hits off Elizabethtown pitcher Michelle Morris, who was pitching her third game of the day, with singles by Bortz, Soroka and junior second baseman Megan Smith to go along with Hastings' double. The Greyhounds earned their third straight trip to the Commonwealth Conference Tournament Championship game with a 6-0 victory over third seeded Messiah College in a winners bracket game at Lebanon Valley College's Softball Park. Moravian will play in the championship game Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Moravian, the tournament's top seed and two-time defending champion, scored the only run of the game junior pitcher Donna Weiner needed in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz hit a one-out triple to right-center field and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by junior third baseman Janelle Brey. The Greyhounds scored four times in the bottom of the third inning. Junior outfielder Melissa Soroka drove in sophomore outfielder Stephanie Eddinger with a single down the left field line before junior first baseman Jenn Hastings hit a bases loaded double to left-center field to score Soroka, Brey and sophomore second baseman Leah Holmes. Moravian added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI-single by Hastings that scored Brey. Moravian had seven hits in the game with two each from Soroka and Hastings. Weiner improved to 14-4 on the year with the victory. She allowed eight hits and a walk while striking out four.

Vs. Juniata College in 2003 Commonwealth Conference Tournament - Won 4-3 (11 innings)   Boxscore

Moravian, the top seed and the two-time defending Commonwealth Conference Champions, opened the 2003 Commonwealth Conference Tournament with a 4-3, 11-inning victory over Juniata College at Lebanon Valley College's Softball Park. Juniata, the fourth seed, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a Moravian error and held the lead until the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, the Greyhounds tied the contest at 1-1 on a double by junior first baseman Jenn Hastings, a single by junior outfielder Jessica Esposito and a Juniata error. The game remained tied until the top of the eighth inning when the Eagles took a 2-1 lead on a single by pitcher Renae Hobbs. Moravian tied the contest in the bottom of the inning to stay alive. Hastings drew a one-out walk and was pinch run for by sophomore Stephanie Eddinger. Freshman catcher Kira Weller singled to right field and an error allowed Eddinger to score the tying run. In the tenth inning, the two schools started using the international tiebreaker with a runner at second base to start the inning. Neither team scored in the tenth. The Eagles runner scored on an error in the top of the 11th inning to give Juniata a 3-2 lead. Moravian started the bottom of the 11th with junior second baseman Megan Smith at second base. Smith moved to third on an infield bunt single by sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi. Cianfichi ended up on second base on the play as Juniata thought she had been tagged out and did not finish the play. Between the two teams, 24 runners were left on base, including 15 by Moravian with seven of those runners in scoring position. The Greyhounds won the second game of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Albright College, 5-4, to sweep the twinbill and clinch first place in the upcoming Commonwealth Conference Tournament at Lebanon Valley College. Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi scored on a wild pitch. Albright tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third inning. The Greyhounds took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the fifth inning on a bases loaded walk by junior third baseman Janelle Brey that scored sophomore outfielder Stephanie Eddinger and junior outfielder Melissa Soroka being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which scored Cianfichi. Sophomore Heather Bortz added a single in the fifth inning for the 100th hit of her Moravian career, making her the fastest player in school history to reach 100 career hits. Moravian added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI-single by sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz, which scored junior second baseman Megan Smith, and a sacrifice fly by Brey that plated Eddinger. Albright would score three times in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Lions were unable to plate the winning run. Moravian had just six hits in the game with Bortz going three-for-four. The Blue Jays jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the Greyhounds responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Junior third baseman Janelle Brey drove in the first run with an RBI-double to right center to score sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi, who had singled and stolen second base. Junior outfielder Melissa Soroka plated Brey with a triple to centerfield, and Soroka would score on an Elizabethtown throwing error on the play. Moravian would get just four hits in the game's final six innings while the Blue Jays scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning for the victory. Moravian freshman catcher Kira Weller was 2-for-3 in the game while sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz went 2-for-4. Moravian has had its final Commonwealth Conference road doubleheader of the season at Albright College postponed until Monday, April 28th at 3:00 p.m. in Reading due to inclement weather and poor field conditions.

At William Paterson (NJ) University - Cancelled

Moravian has had its final non-conference doubleheader of the season, a twinbill at William Paterson (NJ) University, cancelled due to the Pioneers needing to make up conference games. The doubleheader will not be rescheduled this year.

At Lebanon Valley College - Won 8-1    Boxscore

The Greyhounds won the second game of a doubleheader at Lebanon Valley College, 8-1, to earn a sweep of the Commonwealth Conference twinbill and move within a victory of the team's ninth straight postseason appearance. The win also gave Moravian 23 wins for the tenth consecutive season, all under head coach John Byrne. The Greyhounds would score the only runs junior pitcher Donna Weiner needed in the top of the first inning. Moravian scored three times with junior third baseman Janelle Brey hitting an RBI-single to score sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz, who had tripled. Junior designated player Jessica Esposito added an RBI-single to score Brey while junior outfielder Melissa Soroka stole home for the third run as Moravian pulled off a double steal. The Greyhounds extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the third inning on an RBI-single by freshman catcher Kira Weller that scored sophomore second baseman Leah Holmes. The Flying Dutchmen scored their lone run on game in the bottom of the third inning. Brey had a double in the fourth inning, the 36th of her career to tie the Moravian record. Weiner went the distance on the mound to improve to 12-3 on the year. Moravian extended its lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth inning on an-RBI double by Brey that scored Bortz. After Lebanon Valley cut Moravian's lead in half to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth, the Greyhounds scored a single run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by freshman catcher Kira Weller, which scored sophomore outfielder Stephanie Eddinger. Moravian cancelled its non-conference doubleheader with Delaware Valley College due to inclement weather. The two schools tried to play with Moravian leading 4-0 in the bottom of thr first inning when the doubleheader was called off. The games have not been rescheduled.

The Greyhounds earned a 3-1 victory in the second game of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Susquehanna University to earn a sweep of the Crusaders. Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when junior third baseman Janelle Brey singled and scored on an RBI ground out by junior designated player Jessica Esposito. The Crusaders tied the game in the fifth inning. Moravian would win the game with a pair runs in the top of the seventh. Junior first baseman Jenn Hastings scored the winning run on a throwing error during an attempted double steal. Sophomore outfielder Stephanie Eddinger would score on another Susquehanna error in the seventh. Moravian had four hits in the game with Brey collecting two of them. Moravian would score the only run of the game it needed in the top of the second inning on an RBI-single by sophomore outfielder Stephanie Eddinger that scored junior outfielder Melissa Soroka. The Greyhounds added a run in the top of the third inning on an RBI-single by sophomore second baseman Leah Holmes, which scored junior third baseman Janelle Brey. Moravian would tally four runs in the top of the sixth inning on a two-RBI double by sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz and a Messiah error. The Greyhounds' final run came in the top of the ninth inning on a solo home run by freshman designated hitter Richelle McWilliams, the first of her career at Moravian. The Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run by junior third baseman Janelle Brey. The homer was Brey's fifth of the season. Messiah would score the game's next five runs with a single tally in the second inning and four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Moravian tied the game with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to force the extra innings. The Greyhounds' first run of the inning scored on an error and the other two crossed the plate on two-RBI triple by Brey. The two schools would start using the international tiebreaker in the top of the tenth inning by placing a runner at second base. Moravian scored three times in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI-single by Brey and a two-run home run by junior designated player Jessica Esposito. The Greyhounds' rally in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader with Rowan (NJ) University came up short as the Profs defeated Moravian, 4-3, to earn a split of the twinbill. Rowan led 3-0 after scoring on a RBI single by Sherri Cate in the second inning and a two-run home run by Danielle Schweers in the fifth inning. Moravian would tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning but the Greyhounds would leave the bases loaded in the fifth and runners at second and third in the seventh. Moravian scored its runs on RBI-singles by sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi, sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz and junior third baseman Janelle Brey. Brey's RBI was the 100th of her career. She is just the third player in school history to reach 100 RBIs and she now needs just three RBIs to break the school record of 102 set by Bonnie Dietrich. The Greyhounds had just three hits in the game and didn't have a hit until the fifth inning. Freshman pitcher Meagan Hennessy had her scoreless inning streak snapped at 23 2/3 innings after allowing a solo home run to Rowan's Jennifer Berenato to lead off the top of the second inning. The Greyhounds won the second game of a non-conference doubleheader with rival Muhlenberg College, 12-4 in six innings, to sweep the doubleheader. The Mules took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Moravian scored ten unanswered runs. The Greyhounds tied the contest in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run to left centerfield by junior third baseman Janelle Brey, her first homer of the game and second of the day. Moravian took the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning on a two-RBI double by sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz that scored freshman catcher Kira Weller and sophomore second baseman Leah Holmes. Brey would hit her second two-run home run and her third of the doubleheader in the bottom of the fifth inning with a shot to center field. The Greyhounds would institute the NCAA's eight-run rule with four tallies in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brey drove in the first run of the inning with a bases-loaded walk and junior first baseman Jenn Hastings also drew a bases loaded walk to score another run. Junior outfielder Melissa Soroka hit a two-RBI single to right field to finish the scoring. Moravian had 11 hits in the game led by a 3-for-3 performance by Bortz, who added two RBIs. Brey was 2-for-3 in the game with five RBIs. Brey now has 99 RBIs in her career, just three shy of the school record of 102, and she extended her own school record for home runs to 19 with her three dingers in the twinbill. The Greyhounds earned their second doubleheader sweep of the season with a 14-0, five-inning victory over Virginia Wesleyan College in non-conference action. Moravian took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a passed ball and an RBI-single by junior outfielder Melissa Soroka. The Greyhounds added three runs in the top of the second inning on RBI singles by freshman designated hitter Mary Smith and sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz and a passed ball. Moravian would score five times in the third inning with sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi driving in two runs with a single. Smith drew a bases loaded walk to score a run and the Greyhounds other tallies crossed the plate on a passed ball and an error. Moravian finished the scoring with four runs in the fifth inning. Soroka started the scoring with an RBI-double. Smith and Cianfichi each had RBI singles, and sophomore second baseman Leah Holmes added a sacrifice fly to score a run. The Greyhounds had 13 hits in the game with Cianfichi going 4-for-4 to lead the team. Soroka was 3-for-4 in the game while Smith was 2-for-2. Cianfichi and Smith each had three RBIs in the win. Freshman pitcher Meagan Hennessy tossed a three hitter and had six strikeouts to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Moravian needed extra innings to earn a victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Virginia Wesleyan College, earning an 8-5 win in nine innings. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI-double by junior second baseman Megan Smith, who eventually scored on a passed ball. After the Marlins cut the lead to 2-1, Moravian took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning with sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi scoring on an error. The Greyhounds would score seven times in the top of the second inning. Junior third baseman Janelle Brey got the scoring started with two-RBI double. Junior outfielder Melissa Soroka and Hastings each had RBI singles before sophomore outfielder Stephanie Eddinger drove in a run with a double. Freshman pitcher Meagan Hennessy and sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi finished off the inning with RBI singles. Moravian allowed three runs in the bottom of the second with two unearned runs. The Greyhounds score three times in the fourth inning on an RBI triple by sophomore shortstop Leah Holmes, an RBI double by Brey and an RBI single by freshman outfielder Angela Delonti. Moravian had 16 hits in the game with Brey going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Hastings going 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Soroka and Delonti were both 2-for-2 with an RBI while junior designated hitter Jessica Esposito was 2-for-4. Hennessy improved to 2-1 on the mound with the win. Hennessy allowed three runs, but only one was earned on five hits and a walk with six strikeouts.

The Greyhounds dropped their first game of the season, falling to Christopher Newport (VA) University in a non-conference contest in Newport News, Virginia. Moravian allowed an unearned run in the third inning, which proved to be the difference in the game. Moravian had a total of three errors in the game. The Greyhounds had several chances to tie the game but left runners at third base in the top of the fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the sixth, Moravian sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi was thrown out at home trying to score on a ball hit by junior third baseman Janelle Brey. The Greyhounds had just four hits in the game with sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz collecting two of them. Moravian opened its 2003 season with a 7-1, five-inning victory over Averett (NC) University in the first game of the Atlantic versus East Challenge hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach, VA. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a RBI fielder's choice by junior designated hitter Jessica Esposito and a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Melissa Soroka. Moravian added three runs in the second inning with sophomore outfielder Stephanie Eddinger driving in a run with a double and the other two tallies scoring on passed balls. Eddinger would add an RBI double in the third inning and Soroka added another sacrifice fly in the fourth inning as Moravian built a 7-0 lead. The game was called after five innings due to poor weather conditions. Eddinger and junior third baseman Janelle Brey finished the game 2-for-2 while sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi and sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz were both 2-for-3. Junior Donna Weiner tossed a three-hitter in the victory and allowed two walks while striking out one batter.
