The sixth seed SUNY Farmingdale softball team scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie to earn an 3-1, eight-inning victory over fourth seed Moravian in the third elimination game at the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament Mahwah Regional.
The Greyhounds, currently ranked 22nd in the nation in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top 25 Poll, finish the season with a 35-11 record, tying the school mark of 46 games in a season. SUNY Farmingdale improves to 34-5 on the year and will play in another elimination game at 4:00 p.m. Saturday against third seed Rowan University, which won an elimination contest over fifth seed Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday.
The Rams would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Freshman outfielder Kaitlin Keenan reached on a bunt single with one out before moving into scoring position on a two-out single by freshman first baseman Aubrey Walker. The Greyhounds looked to be out of the inning with a pop fly on a ball hit by sophomore shortstop Nicole Farber; however, the ball was dropped and Keenan, who had been running with two outs scored.
Moravian had a chance to tie the contest in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew singled to lead off the inning, and after a failed bunt attempt, freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko reached on a fielder’s choice that had Agnew out at second base. Senior designated player Maria DeBonis followed with a double into left centerfield but Evanko was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
The Greyhounds did tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman second baseman Jenna Carmon reached on an error with one out and moved to second on a Farmingdale State throwing error. With two outs, senior catcher Deanna Mangieri dropped an RBI single down the left field line to score Carmon from second base. Mangieri was thrown out at second on the play to end the inning but not until after the run had scored.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the eighth inning when the Rams scored twice. Walker led off with a single and moved to second on an out by Farber. Sophomore catcher Arielle Morelli followed with a single, and after Morelli stole second, senior designated player Kristina Cirillo hit a two-RBI single to right centerfield. Cirillo tried to score from first base on a bunt attempt by junior outfielder Kim Ferraiolo because of a Moravian throwing error that went down the right field line, but Cirillo was thrown out at the plate by Greyhound sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus.
Moravian went down in order in the bottom of the eighth inning; the third straight inning the Greyhounds went one-two-three at the plate, to end the contest.
The Rams had a 6-5 edge in hits with Keenan going two-for-three. The Greyhounds committed three errors in the contest for the second straight day and just the seventh time in 46 games this season. It was Moravian’s third loss in those seven games. The Greyhound committed three errors in four of their last five games after just 12 errors in the previous 27 contests.
Sophomore pitcher Elizabeth Python dropped to 7-2 in the circle for Moravian this season with the loss. She allowed three runs, just one earned, on six hits and three walks while striking out five batters. One of Python’s walks was an intentional pass in the top of the seventh inning to Keenan. Farmingdale State freshman pitcher Hope Zino improved to 16-2 this spring after allowing an unearned run on five hits with two strikeouts.

Top seed Messiah College scored three times in the bottom of the fourth inning to post a 3-0 victory over fourth seed Moravian College in a winner’s bracket game in the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament Mahwah Regional Friday afternoon.
The loss snaps the Greyhounds’ 11-game winning streak and dropped Moravian into the loser’s bracket. Moravian will play sixth seeded SUNY Farmingdale in an elimination game at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9th. The winner of that game will play in another elimination game at 4:00 p.m. Saturday. Messiah advances in the winner’s bracket to play at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday versus second seed William Paterson University. Moravian is now 0-4 in the NCAA tournament against the Falcons.
The Greyhounds had the first chance to score, loading the bases with no outs in the top of the second inning on hits by senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek and freshman second baseman Jenna Carmon and a walk by sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus. However, Moravian was unable to get a run in. Sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew nearly cleared the bases but her deep fly ball to center field was caught for the third out.
Moravian loaded the bases again in the top of the third inning on a single from sophomore outfielder Olivia Evanko and walks by senior designated player Maria DeBonis and Carmon, but again the Greyhounds were unable to get a runner home.
Messiah would take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman pitcher Jessica Rhoads hit a solo home run to left field on a 3-2 pitch with one out to score the first run. Junior third baseman Lindsay Hall followed Rhoads homer with a single, and junior catcher Abby Berggakker drew a walk. Freshman Tiffany Stokes came on to pinch run for Hall and scored on a Moravian error that would have ended the inning. Freshman Ashley Lehman then put down a suicide squeeze bunt to score Berggaker.
Both teams collected three hits in the game with Rhoads’ homer the only extra-base hit in the game. The Greyhounds committed three errors in the contest, just the sixth time in 45 games this season Moravian had three errors in a game, and just the second loss in those six games.
In the circle, DeBonis dropped to 14-8 on the year for Moravian. She allowed three runs, just one earned on three hits and three walks while striking out three batters. Rhoads is now 22-1 in the circle for the Falcons, scattering three hits and three walks while registering five strikeouts.

Fourth seeded Moravian earned a 4-1 victory over fifth seed Eastern Connecticut State University in the opening round of the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament in the Mahwah Regional hosted by Ramapo College of New Jersey.
The Greyhounds, who are now 35-9 overall, advance to a winners bracket game versus top seed Messiah College on Friday, a 4-0 winner over eighth seed College of Staten Island in the opening game. Moravian and Messiah awill play at 3:00 p.m.
The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman pitcher Jenna Carmon led off with a flare single to left field, and sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus put down a sacrifice bunt to move Carmon to second base. Senior catcher Deanna Mangieri hit a ground out the pushed Carmon over to third baseman. Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz followed with an RBI single to center field scoring Carmon. The hit was the 191st of Klepeisz's career, tying her for second in school history.
Moravian would extend its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Senior designated player Maria DeBonis hit a solo home run down the left field line with one out, her third homer of the season.
Eastern Connecticut would cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth inning. Senior third baseman Courtney Caswell led off the inning with a single up the middle. After a sacrifice bunt from senior second baseman Kelly Finlay, moved Caswell to seconds, freshman outfielder Priscilla Alicea hit a line drive single off of Moravian sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew’s glove pushing Caswell to third. Alicea would start to steal second base, and as the Greyhounds chased her back to first base, Caswell ran home and scored.
The Greyhounds scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 4-1. Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano hit a one-out single and moved to second on a two-out walk by DeBonis. Senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek followed with a two-RBI double to right center field scoring Falzarano and DeBonis. The RBIs for Bieniek gave her 101 for her career, the fourth Moravian player to reach 100 career RBIs and now third in the all-time record book.
Each team had seven hits in the contest. DeBonis was two-for-two for the Greyhounds while senior first baseman Rachel Denny was two-for-three for the Warriors.
Carmon won her 12th straight decision to improve to 14-1 in the circle. She allowed a run on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Freshman Molly Rathbun started in the circle for Eastern Connecticut, giving up four runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout in five innings. Senior Katie Pensiero tossed the final inning for the Warriors, allowing a walk.

Vs. Susquehanna University in 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament Championship

Junior pinch runner Katie Flood scampered home with the winning run on an error on a ball hit by senior catcher Deanna Mangieri as top seed and host Moravian won the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament Championship with a 6-5, nine-inning victory over second seed Susquehanna University at a rainy Blue & Grey Field.
With the victory, the Greyhounds claim their second straight Landmark Conference Championship and the program’s tenth consecutive conference title. Moravian is now 34-9 on the year and awaits the NCAA selection show on Monday, May 4th on www.ncaa.com at 11:00 a.m. to see if the team received one of the five Pool B/Independent berths to the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. Susquehanna completes its season with an overall mark of 22-15.
The victory was Moravian’s third this season in seven extra inning games, and it was also the Greyhounds’ seventh win in 13 one-run games this spring. Moravian also finished the season 18-1 at Blue & Grey Field.
Moravian took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz drew a walk to start the inning, and sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano added a one-out hit. Freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko was hit by a pitch to load the bases before senior pitcher/designated player Maria DeBonis drew an RBI walk to send Klepeisz home. Senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Falzarano. Moravian would leave the bases loaded in the game.
The Greyhounds would add three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 5-0. Klespeisz singled with one out but was out at second on a fielder’s choice on a ball hit by sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew. Falzarano came up and ripped an RBI double to right center field scoring Agnew from first base. Evanko and DeBonis drew walks to load the bases for Bieniek, who hit a two-RBI single up the middle to score Falzarano and Evanko. Freshman second baseman Jenna Carmon drew a walk to reload the bases but Moravian didn’t score again.
Susquehanna scored three times in the top of the fifth inning to cut Moravian’s lead to 5-3. Junior catcher Kelli Holota had an infield single to start the inning and freshman Courtney Miller came in to pinch run. Sophomore third baseman Shelly Landis drew a walk as did junior second baseman Katie Connors to load the bases with two outs. Freshman outfielder Lisa Finizio then hit a base-clearing, three-RBI double to right center field.
Moravian had a chance to add to its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning but Mangieri was thrown out at the plate by Finizio while trying to score on a fly ball hit by Klepeisz.
The Crusaders tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the sixth inning with two more runs. Senior outfielder Gretchen Halsey led off with a single and sophomore Sara Bartoletti came in to run. Senior first baseman Laurie Blaszka singled before Holata hit an RBI double down the left field line to score Bartoletti after Moravian made a pitching change. Landis would tie the contest with an RBI single that sent Blaszka home.
The Greyhounds left a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Moravian left a total of 11 runners on base in the game.
Susquehanna looked as if it had a chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth inning when Connors led off with a single and Finizio reached on an error with one out. However, Moravian sophomore pitcher Elizabeth Python induced a pair of fly ball outs to end the inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Bieniek singled and Flood came into run. Carmon would reach second base and Flood moved to third on a Susquehanna throwing that would have ended the inning. Sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus drew a walk to load the bases for Mangieri. Mangieri hit the ball on the ground towards shortstop where the ball was bobbled and then Mangieri beat a bad throw to first base while Flood came in with the winning run.
Susquehanna had an 8-7 edge in hits in the game with Holata going three-for-four. Falzarano was three-for-five with a pair of runs scored for Moravian while Bieniek was two-for-four with three RBIs.
Python earned her seventh win of the season in the circle for the Greyhounds, after allowing just four hits with one strikeout in four innings of relief work. DeBonis started for Moravian but received a no decision after giving up five runs on four hits and three walks with one strikeout.
Sophomore pitcher Kim Rubino took the loss for the Crusaders, falling to 8-2 on the year, after giving up an unearned run on three hits and a walk with one strikeout in 4 2/3 innings of relief work. Sophomore Cara Swerdlow started in the circle for Susquehanna and allowed five runs on four hits and five walks while striking out two batters.

Freshman pitcher Jenna Carmon hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning to cap a three-run inning as the top seed and host Moravian earned a 4-3, 11-inning victory over second seed Susquehanna University to advance to the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament Championship game.
The Greyhounds, the defending Landmark Conference Champion, will play in the championship round on Sunday, May 3rd beginning at 12:00 p.m. needing just one victory for the team’s ninth straight conference championship. Susquehanna will play again at approximately 5:00 p.m. in the final elimination game before the championship round.
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Junior outfielder Deanna Anderson led off by reaching on a Moravian throwing error. A sacrifice bunt from freshman outfielder Lauren Finizio moved Anderson to second base, and sophomore designated player Brennan Belfour followed with an RBI single to score Anderson.
Moravian, which has won nine straight games, responded in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 3-3. Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano drew a one-out walk and moved to second when senior designated player Maria DeBonis reached on an error with two outs. Senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek followed with an RBI single down the left field line to score Falzarano.
The contest would remain tied through the next seven innings until the 11th. Moravian had two chances to win the game, leaving the bases loaded in both the fifth and seventh innings while Susquehanna had two runners on in the top of the eighth.

Holata was three-for-five to lead Susquehanna while senior outfielder Gretchen Halsey and sophomore shortstop Taylor Crawford each had two hits for the Crusaders.
Carmon won her 11th straight decision in the circle for the Greyhounds, improving to 13-1 after allowing three runs, just one earned, on ten hits and no walks to go with five strikeouts. Sophomore Cara Swerdlow dropped to 15-8 in the circle for the Crusaders after giving up four runs, three earned on 12 hits and six walks while striking out six batters.

Top seed and host Moravian took a 2-0 lead and held on for a 2-1 victory over fourth seed The Catholic University of America in the opening game of the 2009 Landmark Conference Championship Tournament at Blue & Grey Field.
Moravian advances to the winner’s bracket game scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday while Catholic will play in the first elimination game at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore second baseman Stephanie Falzarano singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko. After a ground out by senior pitcher Maria DeBonis moved Falzarano to third, Falzarano would score on a wild pitch.
Moravian extended its lead to 2-0 with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus led off with a double down the left field line, and she moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from senior catcher Deanna Mangieri. Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz followed with an RBI single to right field.
Catholic would cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman shortstop Megan Rizzi hit a one-out solo home run to straight away center field, her fifth homer of the season. Senior catcher Sarah Gage would double off the top of the left center field fence two batters later but was stranded on base.
Both teams had five hits in the game. Falzarano was two-for-three for the Greyhounds while Rizzi was two-for-three for the Cardinals.
DeBonis improved to 14-7 in the circle for Moravian. She allowed a run on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts in six innings of action. Freshman second baseman/pitcher Jenna Carmon came in to earn her second save of the season, allowing a hit in the seventh inning.
Junior Stephanie Clemente went the distance in the circle for Catholic, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk with one strikeout.

The Greyhounds earned a 9-2 win in the second game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader to sweep Drew University in the final twinbill of the regular season to extend the team's winning streak to seven games. It marks the first time in the 16-year tenure of head coach John Byrne that Moravian was able to play all 40 of its scheduled regular season games without weather conflicts.
Te Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a two-out solo home run from sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus, her third homer of the season.
Moravian extended the lead to 4-0 in the top of the third inning with three more runs. Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz led off with a single and moved to second on a two-out walk by freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko. Senior designated player Maria DeBonis followed with an RBI single to score Klepeisz. After DeBonis stole second, senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek hit a two RBI single scoring Evanko and DeBonis.
The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning when Paulus connected on her second homer of the game to lead off the inning. It was her fourth home run of the year and the seventh of her career.
Drew would get its first run of the doubleheader in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single from third baseman Megan Mesaros.
Moravian pushed a run across the plate in the top of the fifth inning for a 6-1 lead. DeBonis walked with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a second out, freshman second baseman Jenna Carmon hit an RBI single to score DeBonis.
The Greyhounds scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 9-1 lead. Junior outfielder Katie Flood and DeBonis each had walks to lead off the inning before an RBI single from Bieniek chased Flood home. Paulus had an RBI fielder’s choice to score DeBonis while Bieniek scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by freshman pinch hitter Priscilla Camacho.
The Rangers would score the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI ground out from pitcher April Jacobs that scored first baseman Jillian Lusk
Moravian had an 8-3 advantage in hits in the contest with Paulus going two-for-three. Bieniek was two-for-four, and both Bieniek and Paulus each had three RBIs in the game. Lusk scored both runs for Drew.
Sophomore Elizabeth Python improved to 6-1 in the circle for the Greyhounds, giving up two runs, one earned, one three hits and a walk with one strikeout. Drew tossed three pitchers in the game with Lauren Collini taking the loss after allowing five runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts in three innings of action.

Moravian would jump out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the first game. Sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus led off with a double and would cross the plate on a one-out RBI double from senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz. Sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew followed with another RBI double to score Klepeisz, and Agnew scored on a double steal with sophomore outfielder Olivia Evanko stealing second after a walk.
The Greyhounds scored a run in the top of the third inning for a 4-0 lead. Senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek and freshman pitcher Jenna Carmon drew walks to start the inning, and Bieniek scored on a Drew error on a ball hit by Klepeisz.
Moravian added two runs on the top of the seventh inning. Carmon and Paulus each singled with one out before senior catcher Deanna Mangieri hit an RBI single to score Carmon. Paulus would cross home plate on an RBI single from Klepeisz.
The Greyhounds had a 10-3 advantage in hits in the game with Paulus going three-for-four. Klepeisz and Agnew were each two-for-four.

Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz hit a one-out, RBI walkoff single to lift the Greyhounds to a 3-2 victory over rival Muhlenberg College to sweep a non-conference doubleheader at Blue & Grey Field. The win for Moravian was just the team's fourth in ten one-run game; however, the Greyhounds finish the regular season 15-1 at home and will host the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament at Blue & Grey Field on May 1st and 2nd.
In the second game, Moravian would strike first again with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Klepeisz singled with one out. Sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew put down a sacrifice bunt attempt but beat the throw to first base for a single. With no one covering third base, Klepeisz raced two bases, and Agnew ended up on second at the end of the play. Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano then hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Klepeisz while Agnew would score on an RBI single from freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko.
The Mules would cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman third baseman Shelby Smith singled to lead off the inning and would score on a two-out RBI double by senior second baseman Samantha Crist deep down the right field line.
Muhlenberg tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning when junior outfielder Jenna Van Waalwijk singled to lead off and scored on a two-out RBI single from sophomore shortstop Jess Kasza.

Moravian opened a non-conference douleheader with rival Muhlenberg College by posting a 5-1 in the first game at Blue & Grey Field.
Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the opening contest. Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano singled to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko. Senior pitcher Maria DeBonis drew a walk, and senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek reached on catcher’s interference to load the bases. Freshman second baseman Sarah Carmon hit a two-RBI single to score to send Falzarano and DeBonis.
The Mules would cut the lead in half in the top of the third inning. Bieniek then hit an RBI double to left field to score DeBonis. After freshman Priscilla Camacho came on to pinch run, Carmon hit an RBI single scoring Camacho. Carmon was eventually thrown out at the plate on an attempted suicide squeeze bunt from senior catcher Deanna Mangieri. Sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus, who had singled earlier in the inning scored on an RBI single off the bat of senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz.
The Greyhounds had a 10-5 edge in hits in the first game with Paulus and sophomore third baseman Marua Agnew each going two-for-three. Carmon was two-for-four with three RBIs.
DeBonis improved to 13-7 in the circle for Moravian, allowing a run on four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts. The win was also the 50th of DeBonis' career, the sixth pitcher in school history to win 50 games. Brewer went the distance for the Mules, giving up five runs, four of them earned, on ten hits and two walks with one strikeout.

The Greyhounds earned a sweep of Susquehanna University in Landmark Conference action at Blue & Grey Field, defeating the Crusaders, 4-1, in the second contest. Moravian's win coupled with a loss by The Catholic University of America clinched home field for the defending Landmark Conference Champion Greyhounds at the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament May 1st and 2nd.
Moravian would jump out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman pitcher Jenna Carmon led off with a single. After a sacrifice bunt by sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus and another out, senior outfielder Eric Klepeisz hit an RBI double to score Carmon.
Susquehanna tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Bryn Whitmire.
The Greyhounds answered with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning for the victory. Senior designated player Maria DeBonis drew her third of four walks in the game to lead off the inning, and she moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek. Carmon would walk, and Paulus would hit a single to load the bases. Senior catcher Deanna Mangieri followed with a three-RBI double off the top of the fence in center field to empty the bases, but Mangieri was thrown out trying to get to third on the throw home. Moravian finished the game with a 5-4 edge in hits.
Carmon won her eighth straight game in the circle to improve to 10-1 on the season. She allowed a run on four hits and a walk with one strikeout. Sophomore Cara Swerdlow tossed the second game for the Crusaders, giving up four runs on five hits and seven walks with two strikeouts.

In the circle, DeBonis improved to 12-7 on the season, allowing a run on six hits and a walk with ten strikeouts. At the plate, DeBonis had a pair of hits including a two-run homer in the fifth inning for her 100th career high.
DeBonis’ home run in the fifth broke a scoreless tie and came with one out and after freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko reached second on a pair of errors.
The Crusaders would pull within a run in the top of the sixth inning when senior first baseman Laurie Blaszka doubled with one out and scored on an RBI single from junior catcher Kelli Holata.
Susquehanna had a 6-4 edge in hits with freshman outfielder Lisa Finizio going two-for-four and senior outfielder Gretchen Halsey going two-for-three. DeBonis was two-for-three for Moravian.
Crusader sophomore pitcher Cara Swerdlow suffered the loss, allowing two runs, only one earned, on four hits with three hits and three walks.

Moravian salvaged a split in a non-conference doubleheader at 21st-ranked Ramapo College of New Jersey with a 5-2 win in the second game to earn 16-year head coach John Byrne his 500th career win.
Byrne, pictured at right, becomes the 24th overall and 19th active NCAA Division III coach to reach 500 career wins, and the second in as many days as SUNY Buffalo State head coach Sandra Hollander won her 500th game on Wednesday. Byrne had a career record of 500-156 in his 16-year career at Moravian, and he becomes the first Greyhound coach to reach 500 career wins in a single sport. Byrne entered the season fifth all-time among NCAA Division III coaches with a .762 winning percentage.
Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek reached on an error to lead off the inning before freshman pitcher Jenna Carmon was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt from sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus put both runners in scoring position, senior catcher Deanna Mangieri hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Bieniek.
The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 2-0 with another run in the top of the third inning. The Greyhounds dropped the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at 21st ranked Ramapo College of New Jersey, 4-3 in nine innings on a two run walk-off homer by the Roadrunners' Kelly Schriber. The loss dropped Moravian to 1-4 in extra-inning games this season.
Ramapo took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run by designated player Marilee Farmer.
The Greyhounds would answer in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus doubled with one out and moved to third on a ground out by senior catcher Deanna Mangieri. Paulus would come home on a passed ball.
The game would remain tied at 1-1 through the regulation seven innings. In the top of the eighth, the teams began using the international tiebreaker rule by placing a runner on second base to start the inning. Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano began the inning on second and moved to third on a ground out by freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko. Falzarano eventually scored on a Ramapo error on a ball bit by Greyhound senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek.

The win also moved Moravian 16-year head coach John Byrne one victory shy of 500 for his career with an overall mark of 499-155.
Moravian would jump out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the second inning, giving freshman pitcher Jenna Carmon all the offense she needed. Carmon drew a one out walk and scored on a two-run homer from sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus, her second homer of the season. Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz and sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew drew walks and scored on a two-RBI single by sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano. Freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko and senior designated player Maria DeBonis would draw walks to load the bases before Falzarano scored on a wild pitch. Carmon finished off the inning with an RBI single to score Evanko.

The Greyhounds opened a home non-conference doubleheader at Blue & Grey Field with an 8-0, five-inning victory behind a perfect game in the circle from senior pitcher Maria DeBonis for Moravian's eighth straight win.
DeBonis earned her fourth career perfect game and sixth no-hitter of her career while striking out 11 Albright batters in the game to improve to 9-5 on the year. The perfect game was DeBonis’ second straight against Albright, and Moravian’s third straight no-hitter against the Lions as DeBonis and sophomore pitcher Elizabeth Python each had tossed no-hitters against Albright in 2008.
The Greyhounds would score all of the offense DeBonis would need with five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew. Senior catcher Deanna Mangieri followed with an infield single that would roll out of play scoring Paulus. Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz followed with a single before sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano hit into a fielder’s choice that had Mangieri out at the plate. After Falzarano stole second base, freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko hit a two-RBI single to score Klepesiz and Falzarano. DeBonis had an RBI single to score Evanko while DeBonis scored on an Albright fielding error.
Moravian added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to institute the NCAA eight-run rule and end the game. Paulus led off with a single and moved to second on a throwing error by Albright on a ground ball off of the bat of junior pinch hitter Kelly Maressa. After two outs, Falzarano walked to load the bases. Evanko followed with a two RBI single to score Paulus and Maressa and put runners on the corners. With the ball loose in the infield after a pitch, Falzarano scored from third with the eighth run before Evanko was thrown out at second base to finish the inning.
The Greyhounds had a 12-0 advantage in hits in the first game with Paulus going three-for-three and Evanko going three-for-four with four RBIs. DeBonis and Klepeisz each added two hits.
Albright sophomore pitcher Dana Parolari took the loss, allowing eight runs, only four earned, on 12 hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Moravian swept its third straight doubleheader and extended its winning streak to seven straight games with a 4-3, eight-inning win over DeSales University in the second game of a twinbill. The contest was the first time in four extra-inning games this season that the Greyhounds earned a victory.
The game was a pitcher’s duel between Greyhound sophomore Jenna Carmon and DeSales’ Jen Lococo with neither team scoring in the regulation seven innings.
The teams went to the international tiebreaker with a runner on second base to start the eighth inning. Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano, who had made the final out in the seventh inning, started at second for the Greyhounds. Freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko drew a walk before senior designated player Maria DeBonis flew out. Senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek then connected on a two-RBI single to right center field scoring Falzarano and Evanko. Freshman Priscilla Camacho pinch ran for Bieniek but was retired on a fielder’s choice but by Carmon. After a wild pitch moved Carmon to second, sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew then hit an infield single to score Carmon and move Paulus to third. The Greyhounds then pulled off a double steal with Agnew stealing second base and Paulus scoring what ended up being the winning run.
DeSales would start the eighth inning with Kristin Schultz. Kyra Monarek led off with a single to put runners on the corners. After an out, Jamie Pfitzenmayer hit an RBI single to score Schultz. Kerri Andrews followed with an RBI double to score Monarek. Amanda Kensecki then hit an RBI ground out to score Pfitzenmayer but the Greyhounds were able to throw behind Andrews and tag her out at third base for the final out of the game.
Moravian had a 9-8 edge in hits in the second game with Agnew going three-for-four. Pfitzenmayer and Kensecki were each two-for-four for the Bulldogs.
Carmon improved to 6-1 in the circle for the Greyhounds, allowing three runs, two of them earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts. Lococo took the loss for DeSales, allowing four runs, only one earned, on nine hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third inning. Falzarano walked with one out and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Evanko. Senior pitcher Maria DeBonis then reached on a DeSales fielding error that allowed Falzarano to score.
The Bulldogs would score their only run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Moravian lead to 2-1. Jamie Pfitzenmayer tripled with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly from Kerri Andrews.
Moravian answered with a run in the top of the fourth inning for a 3-1 lead. Sophomore designated player Jenna Carmon led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus. Senior catcher Deanna Mangieri then hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Carmon.

DeBonis improved to 8-5 in the circle for the Greyhounds, allowing four hits, a run and a walk while striking out seven batters in the victory. Katie Morrissey took the loss for DeSales, allowing four runs, three of them earned, on six hits and a walk with one strikeout in five innings of action. Kristen Cybularz allowed two hits in two innings of relief work for the Bulldogs.

After an out, senior catcher Sheri Bieniek hit her team-leading fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field. Freshman pitcher Jenna Carmon would double before a walk by sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus. Senior outfielder Erica Klepiesz hit an RBI single to score Carmon while sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew hit a two-RBI single to score Paulus and Klepeisz. Sophomore second baseman Megan Boyle finished off the inning with an RBI sacrifice RBI to score Maura Agnew.
The Greyhounds added a run in the bottom of the second inning for an 8-0 lead. Evanko led off the inning with a single and scored on an RBI single from Carmon.

Sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus then hit a two-RBI double into the right field corner scoring Evanko and DeBonis. Senior catcher Deanna Mangieri finished the inning with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Bieniek.
Lebanon Valley scored its only run on the contest in the top of the seventh inning on its only hit of the game. Junior Kristen Uhas hit a two-out, solo home run to right field to break-up a perfect game by Moravian freshman pitcher Jenna Carmon . It is the second time this season a Lebanon Valley player broke up a Moravian no-hitter with a homer in the final inning as senior Katie DeJulio broke up a no-hit attempt by DeBonis when the two teams met in Florida, an 11-1 win by the Greyhounds.
Moravian did finish with nine hits in the game as Carmon and senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz each went two-for-three.
Carmon allowed just the one run and hit to improve to 3-1 on the season. She did not allow a walk, and Carmon did not record a strikeout either. Freshman Kristen Palmerio took the loss for the Flying Dutchmen, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks with one strikeout.

The Flying Dutchmen tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. Junior Caitlin Keller reached on a Moravian error with one out, and eventually scored on an RBI double by Kerri Datres.
With Moravian unable to score in the bottom of the seventh inning, the teams went to the international tiebreaker of placing a runner on second base to start an inning in the eighth. Lebanon Valley would score twice in the inning with senior outfielder Katie DeJulio hitting an RBI single and Kristen Uhas adding an RBI single.

SUNY Plattsburgh jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Erin Jamieson drew a one-out walk and Danielle Gjergji followed with an infield single. After a double steal, Amy Wood hit a two-RBI double.
The Greyhounds answered with a run in the bottom half of the first inning to cut the Cardinals’ lead to 2-1. Senior pitcher Maria DeBonis singled with an out and moved to second on a fielder’s choice by senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek that had freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko thrown out at third base. Senior catcher Deanna Mangieri then connected on an RBI double scoring DeBonis.
Moravian would tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman second baseman Jennifer Carmon had a one-out single and moved to second on a ground out by sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew. Falzarano then an RBI single to score Carmon.
The Greyhounds scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to earn the victory. Agnew led off with a single while sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano reached on a Plattsburgh error while trying to put down a sacrifice bunt. Evanko would get a sacrifice bunt down before DeBonis walked to load the bases. Bieniek followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Agnew and Falzarano moved to third on the play. During the next at-bat, DeBonis got into an intentional rundown on a stolen base attempt that allowed Falzarano to score an insurance run before DeBonis was tagged out.
Moravian finished the game with a 10-4 advantage in hits. Falzarano and sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus were each two-for-three in the game.
DeBonis improved to 5-4 in the circle for the Greyhounds, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. Bri Allen suffered the loss for the Cardinals, allowing four runs, just two earned, on ten hits and two walks while striking out three Moravian batters.

The Monarchs tied the game in the bottom of the first inning. Abbey Knoblauch drew a walk to lead off the inning, one of four walks by King’s in the inning, and she scored on an RBI bases loaded walk by Christie Parfitt.
Moravian would take the lead for good in the top of the second inning with three runs for a 4-1 advantage. Freshman second baseman Jennifer Carmon hit a one out single and moved to second on a two-out single by Falzarano. Evanko then connected on an RBI single to score Carmon before DeBonis hit a two-RBI single scoring Falzarano and Evanko. DeBonis was eventually thrown out at the plate on a single by senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek.
The Greyhounds added a run in the top of the third inning for a 5-1 lead. Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz singled with two outs and moved to second on a single from Carmon. Sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew then hit an RBI single to right field scoring Klepeisz.
Moravian pushed its lead to 7-1 in the top of the fourth inning. DeBonis singled with one out and Bieniek followed with a two-run homer to left centerfield. The home run was the third of the season for Bieniek and the 15th of her career.
The Greyhounds added two runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 9-1 lead and to institute the NCAA eight-run rule after five innings. Carmon singled with one out before scoring on a two-out RBI double by Falzarano. Evanko would push Falzarano home with an RBI single.
Moravian finished the contest with a 14-1 advantage in hits. Carmon was three-for-three with a pair of runs scored while DeBonis was three-for-four with two RBIs. Falzarano, Evanko and Bieniek each added two hits with Falzarano scoring three runs and Evanko and Bieniek each adding two RBIs. Meaghan Galvin had King’s only hit in the game, a leadoff double in the third inning that was erased by a Moravian double play on a throw from Klepeisz after a line drive.
Sophomore Elizabeth Python improved to 3-1 in the circle for the Greyhounds with her third straight win. Python allowed one run on one hit and four walks while striking out four batters. Lindsey Hoerner suffered the loss for King’s, allowing nine runs on 14 hits and a walk.

The Spartans would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single from Kelly Smith. York pushed its lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Julie Norris led off the inning with a solo home run while Sam Koehl had an RBI single that scored Smith, who had reached on a Moravian error.

The Spartans scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning on a Moravian throwing error on a ground ball by Koehl that would have been the third out of the inning.
Moravian scored once in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 5-3 York. Senior pitcher/designated player Maria DeBonis and senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek had back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning.
The Greyhounds scored again in the bottom of the seventh inning to get within a run; however, Moravian left the bases loaded. Freshman second baseman Jennifer Carmon hit a one-out double but was out on an interference play two batters later when she ran into the shortstop fielding a ground ball by freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko. Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano, who had an infield single after Carmon’s hit, scored on an error on a ball hit by Bieniek.
Moravian held a 9-7 advantage in hits with Carmon going two-for-three and Falzarano going two-for-four. Norris and Smith each had two hits for York.
DeBonis took the loss for the Greyhounds, allowing five runs, just two earned, on seven hits and six walks with three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of action. Sophomore Elizabeth Python tossed the final two outs with one strikeout. Brittany Therres went the distance for the Spartans, allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits and three strikeouts.

Moravian, currently ranked 25th in the nation, opened the Salisbury Sea Gull Classic at the Henry S. Parker Complex with a 2-1 eight-inning loss to Kean (NJ) University.
Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run from sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus, her first homer of the season.
The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI single from Cassie Shotwell that allowed Allison Lizzi to score on an error in the Moravian outfield. Lizzi had reached base on the first Moravian error of the inning with one out.
The teams began using the international tiebreaker in the top of the eighth inning with a runner on second base but the Greyhounds were unable to score. Kean would score the winning on a suicide squeeze bunt by Nikki Castagno that scored Melissa Dietrich, who started the inning at second.
Moravian had a 7-4 advantage in hits with Paulus going two-for-three and seniors pitcher Maria DeBonis and first baseman Sheri Bieniek were both two-for-four.
DeBonis suffered the loss for the Greyhounds despite striking out ten batters in seven-plus innings of action. She allowed just four hits, a walk and two unearned runs. Courtney Smyth earned the win for Kean, allowing just one run on seven hits with one strikeout.

The Greyhounds swept their first doubleheader of the season, defeating Baptist Bible College, 13-0 in five innings, in the second game of a twinbill at Blue & Grey Field.
Moravian would once again jump out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior designated player Deanna Mangieri singled with two outs and stole second base. Senior catcher Sheri Bieniek then connected on her second homer of the day, another two-run shot, and this one to left field.
The Greyhounds extended their lead to 7-0 with five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus tripled with one out and scored on an RBI single by Maura Agnew. After the second out of the inning, Maura Agnew stole second base before sophomroe shortstop Stephanie Falzarano reached on a Baptist Bible error that allowed Maura Agnew to score. Freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko then singled to move Falzarano to third base before Evanko and Falzarano pulled off a double steal allowing Falzarano to score. Evanko would move to third on a wild pitch and score on an RBI single by Mangieri. Mangieri would steal second again and scored on an RBI single by Bieniek for the final run of the inning.
Moravian pushed two runs home in the bottom of the third inning for a 9-0 lead. Freshman third baseman Katie Lynn singled with one out and moved to third on a double by freshman second baseman Jennifer Carmon. Falzarano followed with a two-RBI single scoring Lynn and Carmon before Falzarano was thrown out at second base on the play.
The Greyhounds finished off the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior third baseman Kelly Maressa led off the inning with a double and scored on an RBI double from Bieniek. Freshman outfielder Tessa Shifflet had a single before sophomore first baseman Jennifer Schmitt single to load the bases. After Bieniek was thrown out at the plate on a fielder’s choice, Lynn hit an RBI single to score Shifflet. Carmon then had a two-RBI double to score sophomore outfielder Megan Boyle and Schmitt.
Moravian had all 19 hits in the game with Bieniek going three-for-three with four RBIs. Falzarano, Mangieri, Lynn and Carmon all had two hits for the Greyhounds.
Sophomore pitcher Elizabeth Python and freshman pitcher Jennifer Gonzalez combined on a perfect game for Moravian in the circle, the second combined no-hitter in school history. Python tossed four innings with one strikeout while Gonzalez struck out all three batters she faced in the top of the fifth inning. Renee Korb took the loss again for the Defenders, allowing 13 runs, nine of them earned, on 19 hits with three strikeouts.

Moravian opened its 2009 home season with a 9-0, six-inning non-conference victory over Baptist Bible College in the first game of a doubleheader at Blue & Grey Field.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the first game. Freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko was hit by a pitch with one out. After the second out of the inning, senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek connected on a two-run homer down the left field line, Bieniek’s first home run of the season and the 13th of her career.
Moravian added a run in the bottom of the third inning for a 3-0 lead. Evanko led off with a triple and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly to right field by senior pitcher Maria DeBonis.
The Greyhounds pushed two runs home in the bottom of the fourth inning to expand the lead to 5-0. Sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew drew a walk to lead off the inning before stealing second and moving to third on a wild pitch. Freshman designated player Jenna Carmon also walked and stole second base. Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano followed with a two-RBI single up the middle scoring Agnew and Carmon.
Moravian made its lead 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning with two more runs. Senior catcher Deanna Mangieri hit a one-out single and moved to second on a pinch hit single by sophomore outfielder Megan Boyle . After a passed ball moved the runners up, junior third baseman Kelly Maressa reached on an RBI fielder’s choice to third base as Mangieri beat the throw home. Senior second baseman Katie Agnew then drove in Boyle with an RBI single.
The Greyhounds would institute the NCAA eight-run rule with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. DeBonis led off the inning with a single up the middle. Sophomore pinch hitter Jennifer Schmitt (Mendham, NJ/Mendham HS) then finished off the game with a two-run home run to left centerfield, her first collegiate homer.
Moravian had an 11-3 advantage in hits in the game with Mangieri the only player in the game to get more than one hit, going two-for-three.
DeBonis allowed three hits and two walks in the circle for the Greyhounds while striking out a season high 11 batters to move to 4-2 on the season with her first shutout of the year. Junior Renee Korb took the loss for Baptist Bible, allowing nine runs on 11 hits and three walks.

Haverford would push the winning run home in the bottom of the seventh inning. Davis led off the inning by reaching on a Moravian error. Dana Irshay and Searls would reach on singles to load the bases for the Fords. Natalie Richman then hit the game-winning RBI single for Haverford to score Smith, who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Haverford had a 9-8 edge in hits in the game with Searls going three-for-three. DeBonis was two-for-four to lead the Greyhounds.

Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz had a ground out to move Falzarano to third base before senior pitcher Maria DeBonis hit an RBI single to score Falzarano. DeBonis moved over to second base on a wild pitch and would score on a throwing error by Rochester on a ball hit by senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek.
The Yellow Jackets scored once in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Moravian lead in half on an RBI single by Katie McLean. Rochester would score twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Nikki Lee DiSalvio had an RBI ground out while Beth Ameno had an RBI sacrifice fly to score Elizabeth Slupinski, who had reached on an error, with the go ahead run.
Moravian tied the contest at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning. Rochester started its half of the eighth inning with pinch runner Samantha Melvin at second base. McLean put down a sacrifice bunt to move Melvin to third base before Macaluso hit an RBI single to score Melvin with the winning run.

Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano led off with a single and moved to second on a single by freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko. Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz drew a walk to load the bases. Senior designated player Maria DeBonis followed with an RBI single to score Falzarano but Moravian would leave the bases loaded.
The Greyhounds would get three runs in the bottom of the third inning to build a 4-0 lead. DeBonis reached on a one-out error and scored on an RBI double from senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek. Freshman pitcher Jennifer Carmon followed with an RBI double to score Bieniek, and Carmon eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Moravian made its lead 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning when DeBonis doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by Bieniek.
Clark scored its lone run of the game in the top of the sixth inning on a two-out RBI triple by Darcy Kurashige-Elliott. The Greyhounds answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to finish off the scoring. Klepeisz reached on an error before DeBonis hit an RBI single. Junior pinch hitter Kelly Maressa drove in the final run with an RBI double that scored Carmon.
Moravian had a 13-7 advantage in hits with DeBonis going three-for-four. Bieniek was two-for-three in the game while senior catcher Deanna Mangieri and sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus were each two-for-two for the Greyhounds. Kurashige-Elliott and Chelsea Proulx each had two hits for Clark.
Carmon went the distance in her first collegiate start, allowing a run on four hits with four strikeouts for Moravian. Melissa Taft took the loss for Clark, allowing seven runs, just three of then earned, on 13 hits and three walks with one strikeout.

The Greyhounds dropped their second straight game to open the 2009 season, falling to Ohio Northern University, 1-0, in a game played at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida.
The Polar Bears scored the only run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Amanda Fought connected on a one-out triple and cross the plate on an RBI single by Liz Decima. Ohio Northern had four hits in the game including a pair of doubles by Meghan Mahoney. Moravian had just three hits, singles by sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano, senior pitcher Maria DeBonis and senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek.
DeBonis went the distance in the circle for the Greyhounds, allowing the one run on four hits while striking out three batters. Courtney Cash allowed three hits and a walk while striking out three Moravian batters in the shutout.

III Preseason Top 25, opened its 2009 season a 7-1 loss to John Carroll (OH) University in a game played at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida. John Carroll jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Jamie Smrdel had a two-RBI single for the Blue Streas while Jenny Eden, Samantha Thompson, Olivia Mathews and Angela Vistocco each had RBI singles.
The Greyhounds would score their only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz connected on a one-out triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew. Moravian had just five hits in the game.
John Carroll would get an RBI single from Smrdel in the top of the second inning to finish off the scoring. The Blue Streaks finished with 11 hits with Julie Marlowe, Smdrel and Vistocco each collecting two hits.
Sophomore Elizabeth Python started in the circle for Moravian and lasted just two batters into the second inning, allowing seven runs, four of them earned, on eight hits and a walk. Senior Maria DeBonis tossed the final six innings for the Greyhounds, giving up three hits and a walk while striking out three batters. DeBonis' nine strikeouts gave her 376 for her career moving her into second in school history.
Brittany Danilov tossed a complete game for John Carroll with five hits, a walk and a run while striking out eight Moravian batters.
