1998 Review

The Lady Greyhound softball squad earned its first-ever NCAA Division III playoff berth in 1998. Moravian posted a 27-14 overall record and was 9-5 in the MAC Commonwealth League, tied for third place.

The Lady ‘Hounds were seeded fourth in the NCAA East Region in the playoffs. Moravian won its first game at the regional, defeating Western Maryland, 5-4, in eight innings. The Lady Greyhounds were knocked out of the double-elimination tournament by a 2-0 loss to host Messiah, and a 5-4 loss to Western Maryland.

On the field, Moravian was led by senior Audrey Weaver (Northampton/Northampton HS). She hit .363 for the season and was named to the MAC Commonwealth League All-Star First Team, NFCA All-East Region Third Teamand the NCAA East Regional All-Tournament Team.

Freshman Meg Ryan (Edison, NJ/Edison HS) batted .346 with 36 hits in 104 at-bats. On the mound, Ryan posted a 10-8 record in her debut season with a 2.24 ERA. She was named to the MAC Commonwealth League All-Star First Team and the NFCA All-East Region Third Team.

Sophomore Becky Stroup (Palmerton/Palmerton Area HS) dominated opponents on the mound, tying the school record for wins in a season with 16. She had a record of 16-5 this spring with a 1.94 ERA. Stroup was named to the MAC Commonwealth League All-Star Second Team and the NFCA All-East Region Second Team.

Sophomore Zan Azzolino (Lodi, NJ/I.H.A.) hit .337 this season. Azzolino was a MAC Commonwealth League First Team All-Star. Classmate Krysten Mack (Canton, CT/Canton HS) had 20 hits in 59 at-bats for a .339 average. Freshman Missy Hummel (Walnutport/Northampton HS) hit .315 with 23 hits in 73 at-bats. Sophomore Ali Harteveld (Lodi, NJ/I.H.A.) had a .314 batting average.

Senior outfielder Alison Parpagene (Fredericksburg/Northern Lebanon HS) hit .304 in her final season at Moravian. Classmate Christine Hill (Morris Plains, NJ/Whippany Park HS) closed out her career hitting .299 this spring. Senior Trish Weigle (Kutztown/Kutztown HS) was named to MAC Commonwealth League All-Star Second Teamwith a .297 average. Junior Heather Bennett (Franklin, NJ/Wallkill Valley HS) had 21 base hits in 82 at-bats.

The top pinch hitter on this year’s squad was sophomore Tricia Salomonsen (Effort/Pleasant Valley HS) with 12 hits in 28 at-bats. Freshman Katie Warren (Farmington, CT/Farmington HS) had three hits in nine at-bats and scored six runs. On the mound, Warren was 1-1 with a 2.88 ERA.

Also contributing were freshman Kristen Fischer (Hawthorne, NJ/I.H.A.) with ten hits in 41 at-bats, classmate Amy Arnold (Florham Park, NJ/Morristown-Beard HS) with five hits in 19 at-bats and sophomore Marcia Zangrilli (Birdsboro/Daniel Boone HS)had five hits in 20 at-bats.
