2003 Review

The Moravian College men’s tennis team just missed a third straight berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs this spring, posting a 5-2 record in MAC Commonwealth action, and the Greyhounds were in every match this season while having an overall record of 7-8. Of the eight matches Moravian lost this year, seven were by the score of 4-3, and the other was a 5-2 loss to rival Muhlenberg College.

Head coach Jim Walker had a veteran team this spring with three seniors and a junior leading the way for the Greyhounds.

Junior Jason Toedter (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and senior David Kurvink (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) were named to the 2003 All-Commonwealth Conference First Team while senior Todd Edwards (Conyngham, PA/Hazleton HS) earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team.

Toedter was honored for the third straight year, and he has been on the First Team all three seasons. Toedter, a former Commonwealth Rookie of the Year, posted a 15-2 singles record for the Greyhounds this season as their number one player. Toedter was seeded first in the 2003 Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships and reached the quarterfinals before being knocked out. Toedter has a career record of 37-14 at Moravian.

Kurvink was also honored on the First Team for the third time in his career. He was on the All-Conference First Team as a freshman and sophomore. Kurvink posted a 15-2 singles record this season as Moravian’s number two singles player, and he finished his career with a 50-17-1 record, becoming the first player in Moravian history to earn 50 singles wins. Kurvink, who was seeded sixth in the 2003 MAC Individual Championships and reached the quarterfinals, was also 10-4 at second doubles this season with three different players.

Edwards was honored by the conference for the first time in his career. Edwards posted a 10-5 singles mark this spring from the third position in the line-up, and he finished his career with a 31-25 slate. Edwards and Toedter combined for an 8-6 record as Moravian’s top doubles team this season.

Senior Dan Gorman (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) closed out his career for Moravian with a 31-24 singles record including a 4-9 slate this spring at fourth singles. Gorman also had an 8-2 mark in doubles action this spring with Kurvink.

Moravian’s line-up this spring was rounded out by three freshmen, Sean Lynch (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS), Nick Schuett (Oviedo, FL/Oviedo HS) and Steve Redd (Bethlehem, PA/Saucon Valley HS). Lynch was 3-11 in singles action this year while Lynch had a 1-13 mark in his debut season. The duo combined for a pair of doubles victories in 13 contests. Lynch also had a 2-1 doubles mark with Gorman this spring. Redd played two singles matches during the year, and he also played in two doubles contests.

Coach Walker will have a major portion of his line-up to replace next season with the number two, three and four players graduating. However, the Greyhounds will look to challenge for a berth in the MAC Tournament.
