2006-07 Review

The Moravian College men’s tennis team posted an overall record of 9-6 and finished 3-3 in the Commonwealth Conference under the direction of head coach Jim Walker, who completed his 27th season at the school. The Greyhounds also made their first postseason appearance in five years, falling to Messiah College in the Commonwealth Conference Semifinals.

Senior Neil Caniga (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees HS) ended the season with a 14-2 overall record including a 6-0 record in conference matches. Caniga, who was named to the Commonwealth All-Conference First Team for the fourth straight year, finished his career third in school history in singles wins with 45 and second all-time in doubles victories with 35.

Caniga also teamed up with freshmen Ian Box (Charlestown, MA/The Rivers School) in doubles for a 13-4 overall record, which tied the school record for wins in a season by a doubles team. Box, who was on the Commonwealth All-Conference First Team and was the Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year, had a 13-5 singles record to end out the season as well.

Senior Scott Shelbo (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) ended his Moravian tennis career with a singles record of 11-12. Shelbo entered doubles with sophomore Lee Gustin (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) and had an overall record of 5-11, while Gustin had a 5-13 singles record for the year. Sophomore Keith Feinman (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield HS) had a singles record of 12-10, while in doubles he had an overall record of 5-11 with sophomore Jeremiah Reinhart (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley HS). Reinhart completed an 11-9 singles record on the season.

Feinman was named to the 2007 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Spring Academic Honor Roll.

Coach Walker and Moravian are slated to return four players next season and will look again to challenge for a postseason berth in the new Landmark Conference next year.
