The Moravian College men’s outdoor track and field team placed third at the 2001 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships and third in the 2001 MAC Indoor Championships.
The Greyhounds, led by coaches Doug Pollard and Mark Will-Weber, have placed in the top five in both championships in each of the last five years.
At the Indoor Championships, junior Josh Heebner (Lansdale/North Penn HS) was the only individual champion for the men’s team, winning the 400 meters in 52.26 seconds. Junior Kevin Bush (Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg HS) placed second in the 55 meters in 6.70 seconds while freshman Joe Grady (Nanticoke/Nanticoke) was third in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:13.54.
Sophomore Matt Bowers (Annville/Annville Cleona HS) placed fourth in the shot put at 41 feet, 2 1/4 inches while senior Anthony Rediger (Sellersville/Pennridge HS) was second in the high jump at six feet, four inches and fourth in the triple jump at 43 feet, eight inches. Freshman Joe Moore (Andover, NJ/Newtown HS) was fifth in the long jump at 21 feet, 1/2 inch.
Heebner and Bush combined with sophomore George Wacker (Honesdale/Honesdale) and freshman Steve Hartenstine (Danielsville/Northampton HS) to place third in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:35.45. Bush and Hartenstine combined with freshman Anthony Merz (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan HS) and junior Jim McIntyre (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS) to place fifth in the sprint relay at 1:17.80.
Grady, Heebner and Wacker were joined by senior Damon Rutherford (Reading/ Exeter HS) in the distance medley relay and the quartet placed second in 10:46.33, just .08 seconds out of first place. Rutherford and Grady ran in the 4x800-meter relay with junior Chris DeWalt (Easton/Easton) and sophomore Matt Plewinski (Hatfield/ North Penn HS) for a fourth place finish in 8:29.32.
On the first day of competition at the MAC Outdoor Championships, Rutherford placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:44.19 while Grady was fifth in 9:55.10. McIntyre placed third in the decathlon with 4,666 points. Sophomore Justin Arnold (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge HS) was tenth in the 10,000 meters in 35:58.60.
Moore placed second in the high jump at six feet, 3 1/4 inches (1.91 meters) while Rediger was fourth at the same height. Rediger placed second in the triple jump at 46 feet, 1 1/2 inches (14.06 meters, just .06 meters off the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying standard).
On the second day, senior Doug Joseph (Allentown/Parkland HS) placed second in the 100 meters in 11.10 seconds while Bush was second in the 200 meters in school record time of 21.88. Heebner was second in the 400 meters with a time of 49.39 while Wacker placed third in the 800 meters in 1:57.22. Grady earned a sixth place finish in the 1,500 meters in 4:09.01 while Rutherford was seventh in 4:09.13.
Hartenstine placed fifth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 57.50 seconds and he was sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.50 seconds. The Greyhounds 4x100-meter relay team of Hartenstine, Bush, Joseph and Merz placed second with a time of 43.22 seconds while the 4x400-meter relay squad of Heebner, Wacker, Hartenstine and Bush placed second in 3:20.89.
Moore placed fourth in the long jump at 21 feet, 4 1/4 inches (6.51 meters) while Bowers took third in the hammer throw at 131 feet, three inches (40.00 meters).
Rediger was named the MAC Spring Male Scholar-Athlete while Rutherford, Arnold, junior Chris Colley (Easton/Easton HS) and sophomores Wes Zimmerman (Boyertown/Boyertown HS), Eric Paul (Reading/Reading Central Catholic HS) and Chris McGinnis (Brick, NJ/Brick HS) were named to the MAC All-Academic Team.
