2001-02 Review

The Moravian College men's track & field teams placed third at the 2002 Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships and fifth at the 2002 MAC Outdoor Meet.

Senior sprinter Kevin Bush (Stroudsburg, PA/ Stroudsburg HS) was named the Men's Most Outstanding Performer of the MAC Indoor Meet after winning the 200 and 400 meters in MAC record time. Bush, Moravian's first Most Outstanding Performer since CJ Brown in 1996, won the 200 meters in a MAC record time and Eastern College Athletic Conference qualifying time of 22.68 seconds and he captured the 400 meters with a MAC record time and ECAC qualifying time of 50.41 seconds. Bush also ran the anchor leg of the 4x400-meter relay and helped the team capture the MAC title in a MAC record time of 3:28.28. Bush joined freshman Scott Silvoy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS), senior Josh Heebner (Lansdale, PA/North Penn HS) and junior George Wacker (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale HS) on the 4x400-meter relay squad. In Bush's final event, he placed seventh in the 55 meters in 7.24 seconds after qualifying for the finals with a time of 6.67 seconds in the preliminaries.

The Greyhounds had two other MAC Individual Champions with sophomore Joe Moore (Andover, NJ/Newton HS) winning the long jump with a distance of 7.04 meters (23 feet, 1 ¼ inches), a NCAA Division III provisional qualifying distance and an ECAC qualifying standard. Heebner and Wacker joined with sophomore Joe Grady (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke HS) and freshman Patrick Grogan (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) won the distance medley relay in a time of 10:41.17.

Following Bush in the 200 meters were Silvoy in second at 22.96 seconds, junior Eric Paul (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic HS) in 21st at 24.34 seconds and senior Jim McIntyre (Hackettstown, NJ/ Hackettstown HS) in 24th at 24.56 seconds. Silvoy was also second to Bush in the 400 meters with a time of 52.02 seconds. Sophomore Steve Hartenstine (Danielsville, PA/Northampton HS) took eighth in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.39 seconds. McIntyre, Paul, Heebner and Hartenstine placed seventh in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:36.6.

In the distance events, sophomore Sean McDonnell (Scranton, PA/Scranton Prep HS) was ninth in the 800 meters in a time of 2:06.37 while Wacker was tenth at 2:10.16. Grady was eighth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:14.44 while senior Chris DeWalt (Easton, PA/Easton HS) was 15th in 4:30.95, junior Justin Arnold (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge HS) in 20th at 4:34.85 and junior Matt Plewinski (Hatfield, PA/North Penn HS) in 24th with a time of 4:42.40. Junior Wes Zimmerman (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown HS) placed ninth in the 5,000 meters in 16:02.58.  Grady, Grogan and McDonnell combined with freshman Matt Oertner (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh HS) for a second place finish in the 4x800-meter relay in 8:19.21.

In the field throwing events, sophomore John Lesoine (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg HS) was seventh in the 35-lb weight throw with a toss of 13.39 meters (43 feet, 11 ¼ inches) and he was 12th in the shot put with a distance of 11.74 meters (38 feet, 6 ¼ inches). Junior Matt Bowers (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona HS) was eighth in the weight throw with a toss of 13.25 meters (43 feet, 5 ¾ inches) while sophomore Scott Williams (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) was 17th in the weight throw with a distance of 10.20 meters (33 feet, 5 ¾ meters).

Moravian had just one competitor on the first day of the 2002 ECAC hosted by Tufts University and he earned the Greyhounds one point to put the team in 26th place. Moore finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 6.64 meters (21 feet, 9 1/2 inches). The Greyhounds finished tied for 45th of 46 schools that scored points at the 2002 ECAC Championships. The College of New Jersey won the ECAC Championship. Moravian received its lone point from Moore in the long jump on the first day of competition. On the second day, Bush placed 19th in the 400 meters in a time of 51.50 seconds. Bush teamed with Heebner, Wacker and Silvoy to place 11th in the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:26.88.

The Greyhounds opened the MAC Outdoor Championships with a seventh place finish in the 10,000 meters by Zimmerman in a time of 33:53.39. Zimmerman's time put the Greyhounds into fifth place as a team. Arnold was 12th in the 10,000 with a time of 36:22.42. After the first five events of the decathlon, Moravian McIntyre was in second place with a total of 2,880 points. Paul was fifth with 2,779 points while freshman Dan Corey (Fair Lawn, NJ/Glen Rock HS) was seventh with 2,594 points.

The Greyhounds were in seventh place after the second day of the meet. McIntyre paced three Moravian student-athletes that earned points for the team in the decathlon. McIntyre was fourth with a total of 5,225 points while Paul was sixth with 5,020 points and Corey was eighth with 4,899 points. In preliminary track events, Bush had the top qualifying time in the 100 meters with a time of 10.92 seconds while Silvoy posted the top time in the 400-meter trials in 49.41 seconds. Silvoy was also third in the 200-meter trials in 22.10 seconds while Bush was fourth in 22.18 seconds. Moore also qualified for the 200-meter finals with a qualifying time of 22.43 seconds. Hartenstine qualified for finals in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.06 seconds.  Hartenstine also took ninth in the 110-meter high hurdle trials in 15.88 seconds while Oertner took 13th in the 800-meter trials in 2:03.84. Plewinski placed 13th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:20.28 while Lesoine finished ninth in the shot put with a toss of 12.26 meters (40 feet, 2 3/4 inches).

Moravian had its only individual champion of the meet on the final day with Moore winning the long jump with a leap of 6.92 meters (22 feet, 8 1/2 inches). Moore also took seventh in the 200-meter dash in 23.03 seconds. Silvoy was second in the 200 meters in 22.21 seconds while Bush was fourth in 22.45 seconds. Silvoy also had a runner-up finish in the 400 meters in a time of 49.24 seconds while Bush was third in the 100-meter dash in 11.30 seconds. Silvoy, Bush and Moore teamed with junior Brian Mack (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) to place second in the 4x100-meter relay in a school record time of 42.07 seconds, just .07 seconds from qualifying for the NCAA Division III National Championships. Silvoy and Bush also ran with Heebner and Wacker in the 4x400-meter relay, which placed fifth in a time of 3:27.02.  Hartenstine placed seventh in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 57.38 seconds. Grogan was 12th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:15.44 while McDonnell was 19th in 4:21.34. In the field events, Lesoine placed second in the hammer throw with a NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 30.23 meters (164 feet, nine inches), which is also a new Moravian record. Bowers was sixth in the event with a toss of 44.05 meters (144 feet, six inches) while Williams took 19th at 32.05 meters (105 feet, two inches).
