2002-03 Review

The Moravian College men’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams posted a pair of top five finishes at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships and produced the school’s eighth individual national champion to highlight the 2002-03 season for the Greyhounds.

Junior Joe Moore (Andover, NJ/Newton HS) captured the 2003 NCAA Division III National Championship in the long jump with a leap of 7.15 meters (23 feet, 5 ½ inches) at the national meet hosted by DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana to lead Moravian during the indoor track & field season. Moore became the eighth national champion in Moravian history and the sixth from the track & field program.

Moore was also named the Most Outstanding Performer at the 2003 MAC Indoor Championships hosted by Susquehanna University, and he led the Greyhounds to a second place team finish after winning three gold medals. Moore captured first place in the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.65 seconds and he ran a 6.60-second race in the preliminaries. Moore also captured first in the 200-meter dash in 22.82 seconds, and he won the long jump with a distance of 7.18 meters (23 feet, 6 ¾ inches).

Sophomore Scott Silvoy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) won the gold medal in the 400-meter dash in 50.05 seconds, and Silvoy was the runner-up to Moore in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.06 seconds. Moravian’s final MAC Individual Champion was senior Matt Bowers (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona HS) in the 35-pound weight throw with a school record toss of 15.27 meters (50 feet, 1 1/4 inches).

In the other track events, freshman Grant Curry (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra HS) placed seventh in the 55-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 6.79 seconds. Junior Joe Grady (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke HS) placed eighth in the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:15.17, while sophomore Patrick Grogan (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) was 11th in 4:20.34. Sophomore Dan Corey (Fair Lawn, NJ/Glen Rock HS) finished 12th in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.59 seconds. Junior Sean McDonnell (Scranton, PA/Scranton Prep HS) placed 18th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:17.86.

Moravian had three of its four-relay teams finish in third place at the MAC Championships. The 4x200-meter relay squad of Moore, Grant, Silvoy and senior Eric Paul (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic HS) was third in a time of 1:33.28 seconds while the 4x800-meter relay squad of Grady, Grogan, McDonnell and freshman Greg Rarick (Drums, PA/Hazleton HS) was third in 8:29.41. The Greyhounds’ distance medley relay team of Grady, Paul, McDonnell and Rarick finished third in 10:49.39 while the 4x400-meter relay squad of Paul, Corey, Silvoy and freshman John Paul Krupa (Ashley, PA/Hanover HS) placed seventh in 3:42.50.

In the field events, Curry was fourth in the long jump at 6.79 meters (22 feet, 3 ½ inches) while junior John Lesoine (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg HS) was third in the weight throw with a toss of 14.44 meters (47 feet, 4 ½ inches). Lesoine also placed sixth in the shot put with a toss of 13.11 meters (43 feet, ¼ inches). Freshman Michael El Kazzaz (Easton, PA/Easton HS) finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing 4.11 meters (13 feet, six inches) while freshman Casey Hoffman (Kempton, PA/Northwestern Lehigh HS) was sixth at a height of 3.96 meters (13 feet). Junior Anthony Merz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan HS) finished seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 12.21 meters (40 feet, ¾ inches) while Paul placed 12th in the high jump at 1.72 meters (five feet, eight inches).

Freshman William Shimer (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) placed eighth in the 10,000 meters in a time of 34:52.98 to score Moravian's only point on the first day of the 2003 MAC Outdoor Championships hosted by Widener University. Junior Marty Miller (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) placed 12th in the 10,000 with a time of 36:26.86.

In the first day of the decathlon, Paul earned 651 points with a sixth place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.00 seconds, 671 points for a sixth place finish in the 400-meter dash in a time of 53.24 seconds, 552 points for tying for sixth in the high jump with a leap of 1.71 meters (five feet, 7 ¼ inches), 451 points for a seventh place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.35 meters (17 feet, 6 ¾ inches) and 504 points for a fourth place showing in the shot put with a toss of 10.31 meters (33 feet, ten inches). Corey earned 591 points with a ninth place in the 100-meter dash, 528 points for finishing eighth in the high jump at 1.68 meters (five feet, six inches), 319 points for an 11th place leap of 4.66 meters (15 feet, 3 ½ inches) in the long jump and 493 points for a seventh place in the shot put at 10.12 meters (33 feet, 2 ½ inches).

El Kazzaz had Moravian's best finish on the second day of the 2003 MAC Championships with a fourth place finish in the pole vault, clearing 4.03 meters (13 feet, three inches). Hoffman finished eighth in the event with a height of 3.88 meters (12 feet, nine inches). John Lesoine placed fifth in the shot put with toss of 12.42 meters (40 feet, nine inches) while sophomore Mike Lesoine (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg HS) finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 38.97 meters (127 feet, 10 1/2 inches). Freshman Russell Zaleski (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) placed 11th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:59.98.

In the decathlon, Paul placed fourth with 5,376 points. In the final five events, Paul earned 671 points for a second place finish in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:41.42, 526 points with a fifth place in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.98 seconds, 406 points for clearing 3.20 meters (ten feet, six inches) in the pole vault and tying for fourth, 538 points for a third place finish in the discus at 33.73 meters (110 feet, eight inches) and 406 points for a sixth place in the javelin at 37.52 meters (123 feet, one inch).

In preliminary events held on the second day of the meet, Moore finished first in the 100-meter dash in 11.06 seconds and first in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.02 seconds. Sophomore Jed Warsager (Andover, NJ/Newton HS) was second in the 100-meter dash in 11.09 seconds while Silvoy was second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.32 seconds and second in the 400-meter dash in 49.78 seconds. Curry placed fifth in the 100-meter dash in 11.27 seconds and eighth in the 200-meter dash in 22.86. Krupka was tenth in the 400-meters dash in 52.58 seconds.

John Lesoine won the hammer throw and Warsager captured the 100-meter dash title to lead Moravian to a fifth place finish at the 2003 MAC Championships. The Greyhounds posted a team score of 59 ½ points in the meet. John Lesoine had a toss of 48.96 meters (160 feet, seven inches) to win the hammer while Warsager had a time of 11.21 seconds to win his championship.

In other running events on the third and final day of the MAC meet, Silvoy placed second in the 200-meter dash in 22.45 seconds, and he was third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.47 seconds. Rarick placed ninth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:08.96 while McDonnell was 19th in 4:16.56.

Bowers was third in the hammer throw with a toss of 46.38 meters (153 feet, seven inches) while junior Scott Williams (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) placed 15th at 32.13 meters (105 feet, five inches) and sophomore Shawn Nelson (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) finished 23rd with a distance of 29.68 meters (97 feet, four inches). Curry took ninth in the long jump with a leap of 6.13 meters (20 feet, 1 ½ inches) while Moore placed tenth at 6.11 meters (20 feet, ½ inch).

Head coaches Doug Pollard and Mark Will-Weber have the majority of their teams back in 2003-04 and will look to challenge for the MAC titles next year.
