The Moravian College men's indoor track & field team placed second out of six schools at the 2009 Landmark Conference Championships hosted by Susquehanna University. Moravian had a team score of 169 points with Susquehanna coming in first with 206 points. The Greyhounds also got fifth out of 50 teams at the 2009 ECAC Division III Indoor Championships hosted by Tufts University. The greyhounds were under the guidance of head coach Walt Wandall who is in his second year as the head coach of the men’s track and field team.
Senior thrower Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) was named the Landmark Conference Male Field Athlete of the Year. Maginnis captured a pair of first place titles, claiming the 35-pound weight throw in a school record, a Landmark Conference record and ECAC qualifying toss of 15.62 meters (51 feet, three inches), and winning the shot put with an NCAA Division III provisional and ECAC qualifying distance of 15.54 meters (51 feet). At the ECAC Championships, Maginnis placed third in the shot put, with a distance of 15.48 meters and sixth in the weight throw, with a toss of 15.60 meters.
At the 2009 ECAC Division III Indoor Championships, sophomore sprinter Eric Woodruff (Brodheadsville, PA/Pius X) placed first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.02. Junior sprinter/jumper Michael Blenk (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) placed 11th in the pentathlon while senior sprinter Robert Shaffer (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) placed eighth in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.64. Senior Alan Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff) placed eighth in the pole vault with a height of 4.55 meters.
In the relays, Woodruff and Shaffer were joined by sophomore Warner Jones (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and freshmen Kyle D’Angelo (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) where they captured second place in the 4x200 meter relay in a time of 1:30.74. Senior Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic), junior Steve Parisi (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley), and sophomores Jacob Tazik (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) and Connor Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) got second place in the 4x800, in a time of 7:55.62.
At the 2009 Landmark Conference Indoor Championships, Moravian had five individual championships and three relay championships. Woods won the pole vault, clearing an ECAC qualifying height of 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5 ¼ inches), which was also cleared by teammate freshman Timothy Layng (Canton, PA/Canton) but in more attempts for second place. Woodruff won the 200-meter dash in an ECAC qualifying time of 22.44 seconds while Jones won the 400-meter dash in 51.01 seconds.
Woodruff, Jones, Shaffer and D’Angelo won the 4x200-meter relay in an ECAC qualifying time of 1:32.24 seconds, and Woodruff and Jones were also on the winning 4x400-meter relay team with Murphy and freshman Steve Ambrosi (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) in 3:30.16. Moravian’s first-place 4x800-meter relay squad consisted of Murphy, Parisi, Skutches and Tazik with a winning time of 8:11.64.
Shaffer, Maginnis, Murphy, Miller, Skutches, Betz, DeFazio and Tazik were all named to the 2009 Winter Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll.
