2003-04 Review

The Moravian College women’s basketball team made it to the postseason for the third consecutive season and finished as the runner-up in the Commonwealth Conference tournament for the second straight year. The Greyhounds also made it to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Southern Tournament semifinals for the second consecutive season.

Head coach Mary Beth Spirk, who completed her 17th season with the Greyhounds, led the Greyhounds to an overall record of 19-10 and was named the Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year. During the season, coach Spirk won the 300th game of her career at Moravian, an 85-77 win over rival Muhlenberg College. She now has a record of 306-153.

Coach Spirk also had two earn honors from the Commonwealth Conference. Sophomore Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) was named to the Commonwealth All-Conference Second Team, while freshman Jenny Hackleman (Solvang, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS) was named the Commonwealth Rookie of the Year.

Seaman led the Greyhounds in rebounds and steals with 7.7 rebounds per game and 58 steals. She was second in scoring with an average of 10.7 per game and also had 34 assists and 15 blocked shots. In her debut season with the Greyhounds, Hackleman contributed 7.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game to go along with 37 assists, 33 steals, and a team high 34 blocks.

Leading the team in scoring and three-point field goals was senior Kim Hughes (Manasquan, NJ/St Rose HS) with 11.8 points and 41 three-pointers. She also contributed 52 rebounds, 46 assists, 33 steals, and three blocks in her final season with the Greyhounds. Junior Jen Behagg (Hamburg, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) led the team in assists with 106, while adding 7.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. She also had 14 three-pointers, 19 blocked shots and was second on the team in steals with 57. Freshman Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS) contributed 8.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game to go along with 25 blocks, 18 steals, and 13 assists in her first season with the Greyhounds. Classmate Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) added 7.4 points per game, 66 rebounds, 21 three-pointers, 41 steals, 26 assists and eight blocked shots.

Sophomore Lindsay Brase (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame HS) contributed 6.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, 16 three-point field goals, 22 assists, 22 steals, and six blocked shots, while freshman Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) added 5.8 points per game, 76 rebounds, 15 three-pointers, 62 assists, 38 steals, and nine blocks. Senior Tracie Shipman (Seaside Park, NJ/Archbishop Ryan (PA) HS) had 4.8 points per game, 75 rebounds, 24 steals, 18 assists, and three blocked shots in her final season at Moravian. Sophomore Nicole Savino (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights HS) added 53 points, 41 rebounds, ten steals and nine assists. Shipman and Hughes were both on the bench at the end of the season with injuries that cut short their senior seasons.

Sophomore Heather MacDonald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley HS) had 25 points, 28 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots, while junior Marion Berry (Avon, NJ/St. Rose HS) contributed 23 points, 17 rebounds, eight assists, five steals, and one block. Freshman Lindsay Walter (Mechanicsburg, PA/Red Land HS) added 12 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one blocked shot. Sophomore Dianna DeFiore (Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph HS) contributed six points, six boards, six assists, and two blocks, while classmate Catherine Golden (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) had two points, one rebound, one assist and one steal in limited action. Junior Iva Havlikova (Tabor, Czech Republic) contributed six rebounds and one assist in limited action with the Greyhounds.

Coach Spirk will have everyone back next season that played in the postseason for the Greyhounds as Moravian will aim for a fourth straight postseason berth and the Commonwealth Conference championship.
