2005-06 Review

The Moravian College women’s basketball team made it to the postseason for the fifth consecutive season and finished as the runner up in the Commonwealth Conference tournament for the fourth straight year. The Greyhounds also made it to the NCAA Division III Tournament to play Greensboro College, NC in the first round, making it farther than previous years.

Head coach Mary Beth Spirk, who completed her 19th season with the Greyhounds, led the Greyhounds to an overall record of 21-7.

Coach Spirk also had two earn honors from the Commonwealth Conference. Junior Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS) was named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year and to the All Conference Team, while senior Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) was named to the Commonwealth All-Conference Second Team. Applegate was also Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America Basketball Team Honorable Mention and Honorable Mention All-American from Women’s DIII News.

Applegate, who was also named to the ECAC Division III South All-Star First Team, led the Greyhounds in points and rebounds with 19.1 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game. She also had 43 steals, 37 assists, 26 blocked shots, and five three pointers. Seaman was second in scoring, contributing 13.5 points and 7.3 rebounds each game. She had 49 assists, 61 steals, 15 blocks, and 25 three-pointers. Both Applegate and Seamen scored over 1,000 career points this season.

Also scoring in double figures was junior Jenny Hackleman (Solvang, CA/Rutgers Prep [NJ] HS) averaging 10.5 points and 5.9 rebounds each game. She also added 51 assists, 44 steals, and a team high 30 blocks. Classmate Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) contributed 5.8 points and 2.4 rebounds per game, along with 60 assists, 38 steals, eight blocks and 19 three’s. Senior Lindsay Brase (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame HS) contributed 5.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game to go along with 22 assists, 23 steals, 12 three-pointers and four blocks. Junior Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) added 4.7 points each game with 2.4 rebounds, 24 assists, 40 steals, six three’s and five blocks.

Sophomore Sara Steinman (Springfield, NJ/Jonathon Dayton HS) averaged 4.5 points each game and brought down 38 rebounds. She also added 29 steals, 23 three-pointers, one block and a team high of 62 assists. Freshman Rachelle Elneus (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) contributed 56 points, 32 rebounds, five assists, and five steals in her debut season. Senior Nicole Savino (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights HS) and sophomore LaToya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) each scored 53 points this season for Moravian. Savino also contributed 33 rebounds, 15 assists, 23 steals, and nine blocks while Blake added 62 rebounds, 39 assists, two blocks and a team high of 63 steals. Senior Heather MacDonald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley HS) had 43 points, 34 rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocked shots, while sophomore Megan Kocon (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) added 21 points, one rebound, two assists, and two steals.

Freshman Cody Fedorishen (Nazareth, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) had 11 points, 15 rebounds, and three assists in her debut season, while junior Kristina Adams (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery HS) had 12 points, three rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Senior Dianna DeFiore (Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph HS) put up 13 points, 14 boards, nine assists, and three steals. Freshman Lindsey Williams (Kingston, PA/Bishop O’Reilly HS) had two points and one rebound this season. Sophomore Tina Moll (Kintnersville, PA/Palisades HS) had three points, three rebounds, two assists, and one steal before an injury put her out for the season.
