1999-2000 Review

Led by a corp of three freshman, four sophomore, three juniors and two seniors, the Moravian College women's basketball team posted a 4-20 record this season.

The losing record was the first-ever for 13th year head coach Mary Beth Spirk. The sub-.500 season was also the first losing campaign for Moravian since the 1979-80 season.

Despite the team's record, the Lady Greyhounds showed improvement throughout the year. Moravian lost ten of its 20 games by ten points or less and the squad led 12 games at halftime. However, Moravian only won three of those 12 contests.

Freshman forward Kelly McLean (Allentown/Salisbury HS) led the Lady Greyhounds this year in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots. McLean netted 13.0 points per game and pulled down 7.5 boards a contest while blocking 28 shots. McLean led the squad in scoring eight times and in rebounding ten times during the season. She also had five double doubles.

Senior forward LaJona Johnson (Easton/Easton HS) was second on the squad in scoring at 11.4 points per game. Johnson, who averaged 5.2 rebounds per game, also contributed 35 steals and 17 blocked shots this season.

Moravian had a third player average double figures in scoring this year in freshman guard/forward Tara Wozniak (Roseland, NJ/West Essex Regional HS). Wozniak netted 10.2 points per game and led the Lady Greyhounds with 45 three-pointers and a .341 three-point field goal percentage. Wozniak, who pulled down 4.2 rebounds per contest, also contributed 32 steals, 22 assists and 14 blocked shots. Wozniak, who earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team at the Scotty Wood Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College, led the team in scoring during eight games this winter.

Senior guard Jen Polaha (Seattle, WA/Holy Name {PA} HS) led Moravian with 85 assists this year while scoring 5.7 points per game. Polaha was second on the squad with 39 steals and 20 three-pointers. Polaha, who grabbed 55 rebounds this year, scored a career best 17 points in the season opening win versus SUNY-Oswego at the Scotty Wood Tournament. Polaha was also named to the All-Tournament squad at the Scotty Wood Tournament and she was Moravian’s only representative on the Middle Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Roll.

Polaha and sophomore forward Mary Morgans (Center Valley/Allentown Central Catholic HS) were the only two Lady Greyhounds to start every game this season. Morgans was second on the team with 7.1 per game rebounding average this year and she led the squad with 43 steals. Morgans netted 5.4 points per game and she dished out 31 assists. Morgans topped the team in rebounding during eight games this winter.

Freshman guard Jennifer Tannous (Bethlehem/Liberty HS) connected on 18 three-pointers this season while scoring 129 points in her debut campaign. Tannous also had 48 rebounds, 16 assists and 15 steals this year.

Junior guard Jan Golden (Dunmore/Dunmore HS) made ten three-pointers and had 46 points this year off the bench. Sophomore guard Stevie Ochse (Bethlehem/Saucon Valley HS) had 21 points, 21 rebounds and 12 steals in nine games before being sidelined for the rest of the season with an injury.

Sophomore forwards Jackie Boutin (Winsted, CT/The Gilbert School), Carrie McCaffery (Lebanon/Annville-Cleona HS) and junior forward Becky Roe (Worcester, NY/Worcester Central HS) each made contributions off the bench for Moravian. Boutin grabbed 26 rebounds and scored 20 points, while McCaffery had 32 rebounds and 24 points. Roe, who saw action in all 24 games, netted 38 points and pulled down 55 boards.

Senior guard Erin Kennedy (Bangor/Pius X HS) added 21points off the bench in 20 games while freshman guard Erin Glynn (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards HS) added five pints and four assists in eight games.

With ten players returning for the 2000-2001 season and the addition of freshman Kristen Sarnocinski (Harleysville/Germantown Academy), who missed this year with an ACL injury, Coach Spirk and the Lady Greyhounds look to battle for a MAC playoff spot.
