2001 Review

For the second straight season, the Moravian College women’s soccer team completed its season with a berth in the Commonwealth Conference semifinals. The 2001 edition of the Greyhounds fell to nationally ranked and defending Commonwealth Champion Messiah College, 2-1, in that match but Moravian did post an 11-7 record for the season, its sixth winning campaign in the eight years of women’s soccer at Moravian.

Third-year head coach Eric Lambinus, who now has a career mark of 38-16 at the helm, had four players earn Commonwealth Conference All-Star honors and seven players named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Fall All-Academic Team. Coach Lambinus had just two seniors on this season’s squad and looks to have a strong core of returning players next season.

Leading the Greyhounds this season was senior forward Stevie Ochse (Bethlehem, PA/Saucon Valley HS). Ochse paced the team in scoring with ten goals and two assists for 22 points and she was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star Team for the fourth straight year. Ochse was a Second Team honoree this season after being on the First Team the last two years. She was also a member of the MAC Fall All-Academic Team. Ochse finished her career with 59 points (third in school history) on 23 goals (tied for second) and 13 assists (tied for fourth).

Bria also made the Commonwealth Conference All-Star Second Team as a freshman.

Moravian’s fourth Commonwealth Conference All-Star was sophomore defender/midfielder Heather Bichler (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights HS), who was a Second Team honoree. Bichler had one goal and two assists this year with her one goal being the game winner in a match at Albright College.

Sophomore midfielder Erica Napoli (Wyomissing, PA/Wilson West Lawn HS) was Moravian’s second leading scorer this season with seven goals, which included two game-winners, and four assists for 18 points. In goal, Moravian used a combination of three different players this season led by junior keeper Neali Miller (Wyomissing, PA/Wilson West Lawn HS). Miller played 1,005 minutes and posted a 1.16 goals against average while making 54 saves. She had a 7-4 record and two solo shutouts. Miller combined with freshman Jill Vaccaro (South Salem, NY/John Jay HS) on two other shutouts. Vaccaro played 360 minutes with a 1.50 goals against average and 15 saves.
