The Moravian College women's indoor track & field team had its string
of ten straight conference championships come to an end as the Greyhounds
placed fourth of ten schools at the 2006 Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor
Championships hosted by Susquehanna University. The Greyhounds scored
71 points while Elizabethtown College won its first indoor title with
130 points. Moravian had three individual champions with junior Erin
Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) capturing first in both
the 55-meter dash, in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time
of 7.31 seconds, and the 200-meter dash in 26.54 seconds, and junior Kathleen
McCarron (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) winning the long jump at
5.07 meters (16 feet, 7 3/4 inches).
McCarron was fifth in the 55-meter dash in 7.83 seconds
and 14th in the 200-meter dash at 28.95 seconds, while junior Suzanne
Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Wallkill HS) placed sixth in the
55-meter dash in 7.85 seconds and sixth in the 200-meter dash in 27.49
seconds. Both McCarron and Tamlyn recorded
faster times in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash with Tamlyn
fourth after the first run at 7.63 seconds and McCarron
sixth at 7.71 seconds. Tamlyn also placed sixth in the
400-meter dash in a time of 1:00.57 while junior Amy Reehil (Roselle,
NJ/Roselle Catholic HS) was seven in the race at 1:02.52. Sophomore
Theresa Zataveski (Quakertown, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy HS)
finished seventh in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.56 seconds.
In the distance races, sophomore Christina Roccamo (Quakertown,
PA/Quakertown HS) was fifth in the 800-meter run in a time of
2:33.34. Freshman Naomie Kachel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin
HS) was seventh in the mile run at 5:52.50 while junior Jennifer
Connolly (Weare, NH/Manchester West HS) placed ninth in 5:57.89
and freshman Kelly Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS)
was 11th in 6:01.10.
Moravian's 4x200-meter relay team of Recker, McCarron,
Reehil and Tamlyn took second in a time
of 1:48.50 while the 4x400-meter relay squad of Reehil,
Tamlyn, Roccamo and senior Rebecca
Moore (Easton, PA/Easton HS) placed third in 4:13.72. The 4,000-meter
distance relay squad of Moore, Roccamo,
senior Alexis Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees HS)
and freshman Stephanie Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS)
took third place in a time of 13:26.31 while the 4x800-meter relay team
of Roccamo, Vergalla, Kachel
and Miller was fifth in 10:52.26.
In other field events, McCarron placed fourth in the
triple jump with a distance of 10.14 meters (33 feet, 3 1/4 inches) while
Zataveski was ninth in the long jump with a leap of 4.53
meters (14 feet, 10 1/2 inches). Junior Tammy Balliet (Whitehall,
PA/Whitehall HS) placed third in the shot put with a toss of
11.28 meters (37 feet, 1/4 inches), and she took fifth in the 20-pound
weight throw with a distance of 11.25 meters (36 feet, 11 inches).
Vergalla, Moore, Recker,
Tamlyn, Balliet, Reehil,
Connolly, Roccamo, Zataveski,
senior Lauren Bahnatka (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS)
and junior Ashley McCuen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham HS) were
all named to the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation
Winter Academic Honor Roll.
