1997-98 Review

The Lady Greyhounds, under the direction of head coach Mary Beth Spirk for the 11th season, had their most successful season in four years, completing the 1997-98 campaign with a 17-9 overall record and reaching the Middle Atlantic Conference Semifinals.

Leading last year’s team was junior Jessie Coughlin (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS). The 5-6 guard was named to the MAC Commonwealth League All-Star first team and the MVP at the season opening Ida Donovan Good Tournament at Emmanuel College. Coughlin paced the Lady Greyhounds in scoring with an average of 14.3 points per game. She also led Moravian in assists with 95 and steals with 93, also the high for the MAC.

Classmate Leahn Agnew (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley HS) earned MAC Commonwealth League second team honors this year. She was top rebounder on the squad with an average of 7.2 boards per contest. She also scored 9.0 points per outing. Agnew had her best game of the season at Scranton with career highs in points with 25 and rebounds with 17.

Sophomore LaJona Johnson (Easton/Easton HS) was the second leading scorer for Moravian last winter with an average of 9.5 points an outing. She also grabbed 100 rebounds for the year.

Junior Lynne Grzywacz (Blue Bell/Wissahickon HS), who missed three games in the middle of the season with a broken nose, was one of the most consistent players for the Lady Greyhounds last season. Grzywacz netted 8.3 points per contest and was second on the team in rebounding at 5.0 boards per night.

Classmate Gina Sebastionelli (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) returned from a knee injury that kept her out the entire 1996-97 season to contribute 6.2 points and 2.6 assists per game.

Juniors Stephanie Rickards (Lansdowne/Upper Darby HS), Cathy Huegler (Reading/Muhlenberg HS) and Jen Page (New Cumberland/Red Land HS) rotated in the starting line-up at one of the forward positions. Rickards scored 5.0 points and grabbed 4.2 rebounds a contest while Huegler netted 4.3 points and pulled down 2.8 rebounds a game. Page had the highest rebounding average of the three at 4.3 per night and she added 3.3 points per outing.

Sophomore Jen Polaha (West Lawn/Holy Name HS), a starter on Moravian’s women’s soccer team, was a member of the women’s basketball team for the first time last season. She was one of the top defenders on the team and averaged 2.0 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.

The lone freshman on last year’s team was Jill Kenny (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick HS). By the end of the season, Kenny was in the starting line-up. She finished her first collegiate campaign with 53 points and 40 assists.

Off the court, Coughlin and Rickards were named to the MAC All-Academic team.
