2003 Review

The Moravian College women's cross country team had another banner year this fall with its nine straight Middle Atlantic Conference Championship, a second consecutive NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championship and the third in school history and a third place finish in the NCAA Division III National Championships, the fourth top five finish in the last nine years for the Greyhounds.  Moravian has also had nine straight MAC Individual Champions.

Head coach Mark Will-Weber, who completed his 15th year at the helm, had the team tie its best finish at nationals with the third place showing. The Greyhounds were also third in 1993 and 1995. Moravian has also finished fourth in1994, the year the Bethlehem school hosted the national meet, fifth a year ago in Spokane, Washington, eighth in 1997, 13th in 1996, 14th in 1998 and 20th in 1999. Moravian finished the season ranked third in the NCAA Division III Coaches National Poll and the squad was ranked as the top team in the country for six weeks earlier in the year after defeating defending National Champions Middlebury (VT) College, who also won the 2001 title, on Middlebury's course in mid-September.

Coach Will-Weber had what he thought was his best team ever this year and it showed in the teams individual accolades - three All-Americans for the first time in school history, all seven runners ear NCAA Division III All-Mideast Region honors for finishing in the top 35, eight MAC All-Stars for top 20 finishes and nine student-athletes named to the MAC Fall All-Academic Team.

Leading the pack for the Greyhounds this season were four seniors. Senior Heidi Wolfsberger (Moosic, PA/Riverside HS) paced the squad with her third straight All-American finish at the national championships, finishing second for the second consecutive year. Wolfsberger won both the Mideast Regional race and the MAC Championship, the second time since 1994 a Moravian runner has won both races. Wolfsberger, whose best time of the season was at the national championships in 17:12, accomplished the same feat last year. She won a total of five meets this season while placing in the top five of all nine meets this year. Wolfsberger is a three-time MAC Champion, four-time All-MAC and All-Region runner and a three-time member of the MAC Fall-All-Academic Team.

Senior Emily Shertzer (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin HS) was also an All-American this season for the second straight year with a 27th place finish at Nationals in a season best time of 17:47. Shertzer also earned All-Region and All-MAC accolades for the third straight season after placing third in the regional and second in the MAC meet. She was also on the MAC All-Academic Team for the third consecutive year.

Senior Kim Jaick (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) was Moravian's third All-American this season, placing 32nd in the national race with a time of 17:52, her best time of the year. Jaick was fourth at the Mideast Regional and she placed sixth at the MAC Championships. Jaick won the Lehigh Valley Championship race at Lehigh early in the season. Jaick finished in the top ten in seven of nine meets this year.

Senior Erin Boyle (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy HS) also ran her best time of the year at the National Championships with a time of 18:27, good enough for 83rd of the 213 runners in the 5,000-meter race. Boyle, who was a member of the MAC Fall All-Academic Team for the third straight year, was fifth in the Mideast Regional at 18:29.82 and third in the MAC meet.

Rounding out the top seven for the Greyhounds this season were freshman Chelsea Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS), freshman Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS) and junior Jen Wagner (Riegelsville, PA/Wilson HS). Mullins was an All-MAC Second Team All-Star with a 13th place finish and an All-Mideast Region and All-Freshman Mideast Region runner after finishing in 14th place. Mullins also placed 116th at the national meet in a season best time of 18:41. McGarvie was 14th at the MAC race to earn All-MAC Second Team accolades and she was 25th at the regional meet to earn All-Mideast Region and All-Freshman Mideast Region runner. Her season best time of 19:06 came at the National Championships were she finished 152nd. Wagner was 12th in the MAC meet, earning All-Conference Second Team honors and 28th in the region in 19:22.93 to earn All-Mideast Region accolades. Wagner, who was also on the MAC All-Academic Team, was 166th at the national meet in a season best time of 19:15.

Freshman Alison Stoyko (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) placed 14th at the MAC Championships to earn All-MAC Second Team honors with her season best time of 20:06.60.

Coach Will-Weber does lose his top four runners this season but with this year's junior varsity program, he will return 17 runners next fall that have competed on the college level. The Greyhounds will be seeking their tenth straight MAC title next season.
