2002 Review

The 2002 Moravian College Women’s Cross Country team won their tenth consecutive MAC title and finished in fifth place at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional. Moravian had five runners earn All-Conference accolades and three other runners receive All-Region honors. Sixteenth-year head coach Mark Will-Weber was named the 2002 Middle Atlantic Conference Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. Moravian missed the NCAA Championship for the first time since 1992 as a team but had one individual qualify for the race.

Sophomore Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS) led the Greyhounds and she qualified for the NCAA Championships and finished 69th at the national meet and was third in the MAC meet, qualifying her to receive First Team All-MAC honors. Her best time of the season was 21:26.55 at Salisbury University Seagull Opener to start off the season. Senior Jennifer Wagner (Riegelsville, PA/Wilson HS) placed 21st overall in the Mideast Regional and 5th in the MAC meet, while freshman Erica Angell (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) was 26th at Regions and 8th in the MAC Championships. Both Wagner and Angell received First Team All-MAC for their performances.

Rounding out the top eleven runners for the Greyhounds were sophomore Chelsea Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS), who finished with a 63rd place at the Mideast Regional and she missed the MAC meet with an injury, freshman Alexis Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees HS) placed 75th overall in the Regionals and 15th at the MAC Championships earning Second Team All-MAC honors, and sophomore Alison Stoyko (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) finished 86th at the Mideast Regional meet and 27th at the MAC’s. Also, junior Angie Morgan (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) finished 115th overall at Regions and 12th at the MAC’s.

The Greyhounds had five other runners compete at the MAC meet with sophomore Megan Wise (North Wales, PA/North Penn HS) placing 29th, sophomore Kellie Smith (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) finishing 55th, sophomore Kim Bushner (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) taking 61st place, and juniors Robin Edward (Massapequa, NY/Plainedge HS) and Jennifer Brief (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson HS) finishing 68th and 70th, respectively.
