Moravian College's campus has two beautiful, well-maintained
sections. Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus on Church Street is the center
of the Bethlehem historic district; the Main Street campus is eight
blocks away in a residential area. Vans allow students to commute easily
between campuses. Thirty buildings include the Collier Hall of Science,
Comenius Hall, Haupert Union Building, Reeves Library, Foy Concert Hall,
Payne Art Gallery, and the Brethren’s House.
The Brethren's House on the Church Street campus was built
in 1748 as a dwelling for the single men of the original Moravian community
in Bethlehem. It served as a hospital for American soldiers during the
Revolutionary War. Acquired by the Bethlehem Female Seminary in 1815,
it housed the Moravian College for Women until the merger of the men's
and women's colleges in 1954. Now part of the Hurd Center for Music
and Art, it is the home of the Moravian College music department.
On Main Street Campus, the Haupert
Union Building, the first of its kind in the region, provides dining
and food court service, lounges and entertainment space, meeting rooms,
offices for student organizations, the College bookstore, the Arena
Theatre, and Prosser Auditorium.
The Collier Hall of Science provides classrooms and 35
laboratories for teaching and student-faculty research in biology, chemistry,
physics, earth science, and computer science, two lecture halls, faculty
offices, and a specially-designed computer network for the sciences
funded by the National Science Foundation.
Comenius Hall, a massive landmark built in 1891, originally
housed the whole men's college and theological seminary (classrooms,
dorm rooms, library, president's office, and all) but now holds classrooms,
faculty offices, and the Division of Continuing Studies. Borhek Chapel
(built in 1893), originally separate but now attached to Comenius Hall's
north end, is used for College services, Catholic mass, and sometimes
for weddings.
Reeves Library has more than 230,000 volumes, plus microfilm,
periodicals, recordings, and special collections. An automated interlibrary
loan system, with access to 2,000,000 volumes from any area college
and university library, makes material available on 24-hour notice.
An automated on-line catalog with remote access is in use and other
on-line services are offered.
The Athletics and Recreation Center consists of Johnston
Hall and Breidegam Field House. Johnston Hall is the focal point for
indoor athletic events, including the home games of the Greyhound basketball
and volleyball teams. Its 1,600-seat indoor arena is also used by convocations,
concerts, and a variety of other campus and community events. Breidegam
Field House has an indoor track, a weight and fitness room, an aerobics
and dance studio, and four regulation multipurpose courts for intramural
and recreational sports. Outdoor athletics facilities at the nearby
Steel Field complex include a football field and stadium, an all-weather
track, baseball and softball diamonds, tennis courts, and a field house.
Other facilities include classroom buildings, art studios,
fraternity and sorority houses, two residence halls on the Church Street
campus, and eleven residence halls on the Main Street campus.
