Bethlehem, Moravian's home, is an attractive tree-lined
city of 75,000 in the center of the Lehigh Valley community, with a
population of more than 600,000. Known as the Christmas City, Bethlehem
is home also for Bethlehem Steel Corporation and a growing number of
businesses in service and technology fields.
Moravian's two campuses are at either end of "the
Moravian Mile," a stretch of Main Street that includes the attractive
downtown shopping district. Downtown Bethlehem features shops for clothing,
gifts, jewelry, books (at the Moravian Book Shop operated by the Moravian
Church since 1745), a movie theatre, and restaurants ranging from Billy's Downtown Diner to Johnny’s Bagels.
Bethlehem is a city which has blended culture and commerce,
progress and preservation. Among its cultural highlights are the Bach
Festival in May, the nine-day Musikfest drawing a million visitors each
August, the Celtic Classic in September, and the events and displays
of the Christmas season, which attract many thousands of guests from
all over the world. A special Christmas event is the College's annual
candlelight Christmas Vespers service in Central Moravian Church, which
attracts well over 5,000 participants.
