Medical schools recognize the importance
of a broad education in natural and social sciences, humanities, and communications skills. Moravian has a tradition of a strong liberal arts curriculum of which the natural sciences are an integral part.
Foundation courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics are required by medical schools, but a student does not have to major in a science area. Medical schools are interested in students who can obtain, assimilate, and effectively communicate information. Students must be able to think analytically and solve problems. Moravian provides students with the opportunity to blend scientific and liberal arts concepts.

The Biology Department of Moravian College has a cooperative program in dentistry with Temple University School of Dentistry. Students spend three years at Moravian to obtain basic education in the sciences and liberal arts and then, if prescribed requirements are fulfilled, transfer to Temple University School of Dentistry for four years to earn a Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree.

Pre-veterinary students may elect various majors or design their own program, but veterinary schools require specific preparation in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, as well as appropriate basic preparation in the liberal arts. Students preparing for careers in veterinary medicine should also elect appropriate field studies, such as in large and or small veterinary practices, zoos, aviaries, aquaria, the Trexler Game Preserve, or Disney World.

Field studies, taken during the academic year or summer sessions, allow students to receive credit for off-campus, on-the-job experience. For example, premedical students can participate in a Pre-med Observer Program at nearby St. Luke’s Hospital. The Program, designed to give students a realistic perspective of medicine, includes shadowing residents in Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Surgery, and an elective specialty, attending conferences, participating in rounds, and spending time in several departments such as pathology, cardiac catherization, managed care, radiology, etc. In addition to learning techniques and strengthening their theoretical knowledge of medicine, students work closely with physicians and their patients. Field Study opportunities are also available in dentistry and veterinary medicine, whereby students can work with general or specialized dentists, local veterinarians, or even the staff at the Philadelphia Zoo. Two students were recent participants in a Program at Animal Kingdom in Disney World.

Besides Field Study experience, an exciting new opportunity in medical research is available to students accepted into our Honors Research Program. One student did a research project in the OB/GYN Department at Lehigh Valley Hospital and one is working with the Trauma Center at St. Luke’s Hospital.
