Frequently Asked Questions About: Admission

Q: Who is the typical Moravian student?

A: There is no “typical” Moravian student. We strive for a variety of students with different backgrounds, talents, and interests. We at Moravian believe that a diverse student body provides an atmosphere geared toward achieving a well-rounded education.

Q: Is it necessary for me to visit the Moravian College campus?

A: While the campus visit is not a mandatory component of the admission process, it is best advised to visit not only Moravian’s campus, but the campus of any institution you are interested in attending. A campus visit will allow you to assess whether or not you’re comfortable with the location, facilities, and people you will be immersed in for the next four years.

Q: How is the Moravian admission process different from those of other colleges?

A: We operate similarly to most small, selective liberal arts colleges. Aside from the basic criterion, the admission staff looks for clues that you are willing to be challenged, interested in participating in college activities, and able to contribute a talent or skill to the community. Our application and admission pamphlets provide more specific information about various documents and credentials that need to be submitted.

Q: How important are standardized tests in comparison to my high school transcript, extra-curricular activities etc.?

A: Standardized tests are helpful in predicting an individual’s initial success in college. However, test scores are not the primary concern of our admission staff. Our admission counselors give more consideration to your grades, consistency of your academic performance, and the level of difficulty of the courses you have taken in high school. The admission staff also assesses your involvement in high school – the range of activities you have chosen to be involved in and the consistency of your participation in those activities throughout high school.

Q: Just how do you make the final choice of who is admitted into Moravian?

A: Most of the students who apply to Moravian meet our basic requirements. Our applicants have done their research and are aware of our requirements and expectations. This only makes the admission staff members’ jobs more difficult. Our selection committee is composed of eight individuals. Each member of the committee reads a portion of the application pool. The individual makes a decision on the application. The committee then meets to discuss and evaluate all of the applications with the initial reader leading the discussion on each application. Some decisions take two minutes others take two days. If necessary, a formal vote is tallied.
