Frequently Asked Questions About: Learning Disabilities

Q. How will having a learning disability affect my chances for admission?

A. Students with learning disabilities and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are considered for admission to Moravian College on the same basis as other applicants. Students may choose to disclose a disability during the admission process and may not be rejected for admission based on the presence of a learning disability; however, students with disabilities must be otherwise qualified for admission. They must meet the College’s standards for admission regardless of the disability.

Q. Is there a special program for students with learning disabilities?

A. Moravian does not offer a separate academic program for students with learning disabilities and ADHD. Classroom accommodations are arranged for students who provide adequate and current documentation of a disability, request accommodations, and follow all required procedures outlined by the Office of Learning Services*.

*The Director of Learning Services may be reached at (610) 861-1510 or at the following address: 1307 Main Street, Moravian College Bethlehem, PA 18018

Q. What is considered adequate documentation of a learning disability?

A. Required documentation must be recent (within 3 years of enrollment), must clearly diagnose a specific LD, ADHD, or neurological impairment. It must include all test and subtest scores and demonstrate a significant impairment. Although helpful as support materials, secondary school IEPs are not sufficient for documentation of a disability and granting of accommodations in college.

Q. How will Moravian know if I have a learning disability?

A. It is the responsibility of learning disabled students to self-identify and request accommodations for each semester in which accommodations are desired. The College is prohibited by law to inquire about a student’s possible disability status.

Q. Who will be told about my learning disability?

A. Information about a student’s disability is confidential and cannot be released without written permission from the student.

Q. What kind of personal attention can I expect to receive at Moravian?

A. Accommodations are granted on an individual basis. Individual support is available upon request to all students, regardless of disability status, for help with time management, organization, test preparation, and other study skills. Professors have mandatory weekly office hours where students who need further assistance may reach them. Peer tutoring is also available for most courses.
