2001 Review

The Moravian College baseball team had a pair of student- athletes surpass the 100-career hit plateau this season and the Greyhounds came within one win of clinching a berth in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs.

The Greyhounds, under the direction of head coach Ed Little for the 19th season, posted an overall record of 14-19 and a 6-8 slate in the Commonwealth Conference.

Leading the Greyhounds at the plate this spring was senior shortstop Mike Gill (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon HS).  Gill had his best season for the Moravian, hitting .394 with 41 hits, which tied the Moravian single season record, in 104 at-bats.  The 41 hits gave Gill 107 hits for his career, the fifth player to reach the 100-hit plateau.  Gill also led the Greyhounds with 25 RBIs, nine doubles and 10 stolen bases.  He added 27 runs scored, 21 walks and one homerun.  Gill was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star Second Team.

Senior outfielder/pitcher Joe Pochron (Allentown/Salisbury HS) also surpassed 100 hits this season with 29 hits to finish with 120 hits in his four seasons.  Pochron hit .284 this season with 102 at-bats, 16 runs scored, 10 RBIs, 15 walks and eight doubles.  Pochron was the Greyhound’s best pitcher this season, posting a 4-4 record with a 2.18 earned run average in a team high 53 2/3 innings.  Pochron struck out 47 batters and allowed 40 walks with six complete games.  At the end of the season, Pochron pulled off a feat that has only occurred one other time in Moravian history, being named a Conference All-Star at two different positions in the same year.  He was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star First Team as a pitcher and the All-Star Second Team as an outfielder.

Sophomore Jeff Meila (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) played five different positions, left field, right field, first base, catcher and designated hitter, for the Greyhounds this season and he was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star Second Team as a utility player.  Meila hit .303 this season with 33 hits in 109 at-bats with 20 RBIs, 10 runs scored, 11 walks, four doubles and a team-leading three homeruns.

Sophomore first baseman Bob Frey (Hellertown/Saucon Valley HS), who set the single season record with seven homeruns as a freshman, hit .294 this spring with 30 hits in 102 at-bats.  Frey added seven doubles, one triple, one homerun, 14 runs scored, 16 walks and 23 RBIs.

Junior outfielder Michael Abbate (South Plainfield, NJ/Bishop Ahr HS) collected 23 hits this spring.  Abbate led the Greyhounds with 29 runs scored and 26 walks.  He added nine doubles, nine stolen bases and seven RBIs.  Sophomore third baseman Charlie Bowden (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial HS) added 22 hits with 11 runs scored, nine RBIs and two doubles.

Freshman second baseman Matthew Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst HS) had 19 hits in his debut season with 19 runs scored, 16 walks, nine RBIs, seven stolen bases, two doubles and a triple.  Junior outfielder Bill Quinn (Lebanon, CT/Lyman Memorial HS) had 18 hits, 13 walks, 10 RBIs, nine runs scored, two doubles, two homeruns and one triple this spring.

Senior catcher Dustin Levy (Vineland, NJ/Vineland HS) and junior outfielder/pitcher Curtis Hoff (Kintersville/Palisades HS) each had nine hits this season while sophomore infielder Luke Bricker (Kutztown/Kutztown HS) had five hits.  Levy scored three runs while Hoff had six runs scored and three RBIs.  Bricker, who was on the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Academic Team, crossed the plate four times.

Freshmen outfielder Dave Darmofal (Clarks Summit/Abington Heights HS) and catcher Geoffrey Deen (Mt. Bethel/Bangor HS) each had four hits and two doubles in their debut season.

The Greyhound pitching staff posted a 4.75 team ERA in 235 innings of work.  In addition to Pochron, freshman Greg Peters (Hellertown/Saucon Valley HS) had an ERA under 3.00 at 2.55.  Peters tossed 24 2/3 innings with a 3-2 record, 19 strikeouts and just eight walks.

Junior Randy Woolley (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional HS) had a 4.29 ERA and a 3-5 record in 50 1/3 innings.  He added 25 strikeouts while walking just 11 batters.  Freshman Matt Erney (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) had a 3.57 ERA and a 1-0 record in 17 2/3 innings.  Hoff posted a 4.50 ERA in 18 innings with one save and a 0-2 mark.

Sophomore Ryan Boyle (Bethlehem/Liberty HS), a member of the MAC All-Academic Team, also had a 4.50 ERA with 13 strikeouts and a 1-2 record in 26 innings.  Freshman Brett Porter (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park HS) rounded out the regulars of the Moravian pitching staff with a 5.92 ERA, a 2-2 record and two saves in 24 1/3 innings of action.

The Greyhounds have a solid nucleus of players returning in 2002 but will have to find replacements for Gill, Pochron and Levy, who combined for 264 hits, 155 runs, 627 putouts and 441 assists over the last four years.
