Vs. United States Merchant Marine Academy in 2009 Landmark Conference Championship Tournament - Lost 15-5 - Boxscore

Second seed Moravian dropped its second game of the day and was knocked out of the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament hosted by Susquehanna University after the Greyhounds fell to third seed the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 15-5, in the final elimination game before the championship round.

The Mariners, who forced the if necessary game win in the next contest, took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. First baseman Doug Carter singled with one out and scored on an RBI double by third baseman Nick Matheson. Outfieler Alex Wolfe followed with a two-RBI single to score Matheson and second baseman Travis Christensen, who had been hit by a pitch.

Merchant Marine extended its lead to 8-0 with a five-run, fourth inning. Carter led off with a single, and catcher Matt Rigby was hit by a pitch. Carter and Rigby would score on a pair of Moravian errors on a sacrifice bunt put down by Christensen. Matheson hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Christensen. Wolfe followed with a double before shortstop Frank Pierson added a two-run homer.

Moravian would get on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Senior third baseman Kevin Gambrino was hit by a pitch with two outs, and sophomore second baseman Jake Schweitzer followed with a two-run homer to left field, his second home run of the season.

The Greyhounds would added two more runs on the bottom of the fifth to cut Merchant Marine's lead to 8-4. Sophomore outfielder Jason Huber hit an two-out single, and senior outfielder Joseph Durso followed it with a two-run home run to center field, Durso's fifth homer of the season. The hit was Durso's only one of the game to finish the season with a school record 61 hits, and end his career with school records of 175 hits, 131 RBIs, 263 total bases, 51 doubles and a .352 career batting average.

The Mariners would put the game out of reach with six runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 14-4 lead. Christensen led off with a single while Matheson and Wolfe drew walks around a Moravian pitching change to load the bases. Outfielder Darin Coleman connected on an RBI sacrifice fly to score Christensen. Designated hitter Mike Bybee drew a walk to reload the bases after the second out of the inning. Outfielder David May followed that with a two-RBI single before Carter connected on a three-run homer.

Moravian scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Gambrino was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game, and Schweitzer drew a walk. Freshman catcher Blake Shortall was also hit by a pitch to load the bases, and freshman shortstop Dave Zubia drew an RBI walk to score Gambrino. With no outs in the inning and the top of the line-up coming to the plate, the Greyhounds were unable to get another run home.

Merchant Marine finished off the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI single from Matheson.

The Mariners had a 14-8 advantage in hits with Carter going four-for-five with four runs scored and three RBIs. Matheson was three-for-three with three RBIs while Wolfs was two-for-four for Merchant Marine. Pierson also collected two hits and two RBIs for the Mariners. Huber, senior outfielder Eric Shea and freshman first baseman Kevin O'Keefe were each two-for-five for the Greyhounds.

Moravian used four pitchers in the game with junior Ryan Cummings taking the loss after allowing ten runs, seven earned, on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts in five-plus innings of action. Junior Philip Spence tossed one inning, giving up four runs on two hits and two walks. Junior Zach Andes pitched two innings with two hits allowed and three strikeouts while senior Thomas Murray finished the game for the Greyhounds, allowing a run on three hits.

Merchant Marine also used three pitchers with Keith Heine earning the victory after giving up five runs on seven hits and a walk with one strikeout in five-plus innings of work.

Vs. The Catholic University of America in 2009 Landmark Conference Championship Tournament - Lost 8-4 - Boxscore

The second seeded Greyhounds suffered their first loss at the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament hosted by Susquehanna University, faing to fourth seed The Catholic University of America, 8-4, in a winner's bracket game. Moravian dropped into the second elimination game of the tournament with the loss while the Cardinals moved into the championship round.

Catholic would take control of the game with a six-run second inning. Second baseman Timothy Mierzwa started the scoring with an RBI single with the bases loaded to score catcher Patrick Quintana, who had led off the inning with a walk. Outfielder Tommy Little followed with a three-RBI triple to empty the bases. Outfielder Cory Hudson then put down an RBI suicide squeeze bunt to score Little. Hudson would eventually score the final run of the inning on a double steal with first baseman Mike Goodman stealing second while Hudson came home on the delayed steal.

Moravian scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Catholic lead to 6-1. With two outs, freshman catcher Austin Rock connected on a solo home run to left field, his team leading seventh homer of the season.

The Cardinals got the run back in the top of the fifth inning for a 7-1 lead with Goodman scoring on a double play ball hit by outfielder Dimitri Deoudes.

The Greyhounds would push two runs home in the bottom fo the fifth to move within 7-3. Sophomore second baseman Jon Baltz drew a one-out walk and moved to second on an infield single from freshman shortstop Dave Zubia. After a ground out by senior outfielder Eric Shea moved both runners into scoring position, sophomore outfielder Jason Huber hit a two-RBI single for Moravian.

Catholic would score a single run in the top half of the seventh inning for an 8-3 lead when shortstop LJ Travaglia walked with one out, stole second base and scored on a Moravian throwing error on a ground ball hit by third baseman Troy Langway.

Moravian finished off the scoring with a run in the bottom of the seventh. After a double play for the first two outs of the inning, Huber doubled. He moved to third on a passsed ball and came home on a throwing error by Catholic.

The Cardinals had a 9-6 edge in hits with Goodman and Deoudes each going two-for-four. Huber and Rock were both two-for-four for the Greyhounds.

Freshman Thomas Fenyak started on the mound for Moravian and suffered just his third loss of the season after allowing seven runs on eight hits and three walks with one strikeout in 5 2/3 innings of action. Junior Andrew DeLio tossed the final 3 1/3 innings, giving up an unearned run on a hit and three walks with one strikeout.

Catholic's Kevin Sweeney tossed a complete game for the Cardinals, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and three walks while recording seven strikeouts.

Vs. United States Merchant Marine Academy in 2009 Landmark Conference Championship Tournament - Won 18-6 - Boxscore

Second seeded Moravian opened its first postseason appearance since 2004 with an 18-6 victory over third seeded United States Merchant Marine Academy in the opening round of the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament being hosted by Susquehanna University.

The Greyhounds, who are now 21-18 overall extending the school record for victories in a season, will play fourth seed The Catholic University of America a winner’s bracket game on Saturday, May 2nd at approximately 10:30 a.m.  The Cardinals defeated the host and top seed Crusaders, 7-5, in the opening round of the tournament.  Friday’s third game, an elimination contest between Susquehanna and U.S. Merchant Marine, was suspended after seven innings due to darkness with the Mariners up 9-8.  The contest will be resumed at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday with the Moravian versus Catholic game to follow 40 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended game.

The Mariners jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when shortstop Frank Pierson drew a one-out walk and scored on a two-out, two-run homer from outfielder David May. 

Moravian would get a run back in the bottom half of the first inning.  Sophomore outfielder Jason Huber singled with one out, and senior outfielder Joseph Durso followed with an RBI double, his school record and NCAA Division III leading 23rd double of the season.

US Merchant Marine would extend its lead to 5-1 with three runs in the top of the third inning.  Outfielder Darin Coleman led off with a single and scored on an RBI infield single from Pierson.  Designated hitter Mike Bybee then hit a two-run home run to finish off the scoring in the inning.

The Greyhounds would chase home four runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 5-5.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea singled with one out, and Huber reached on an error.  Durso then hit an RBI infield single to score Shea.  The hit was Durso’s 172 career hit breaking Moravian’s all-time record.  Freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe then followed with a two-RBI triple scoring Huber and Durso.  Freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci added an RBI double to score O’Keefe and tie the game.

Moravian scored three times in the bottom of the fourth inning to take its first lead of the game at 8-5.  With two outs, Shea was hit by a pitch, the 12th time this season Shea has been hit by a pitch.  Huber followed with a double to send Shea to third.  Durso followed with a two-RBI single throw the right side to score Shea and Huber.  O’Keefe then hit an RBI double to score Durso and tie the contest.

The Greyhounds added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, after a delay to work on the field since a light rain had been falling most of the day, to extend the lead to 10-5.  Senior third baseman Kevin Gambrino was hit by a pitch and stole second base to lead things off before sophomore second baseman Jake Schweitzer drew a walk.  After a fly out from freshman catcher Blake Shortall moved the runners to second and third, and after another out, Shea hit a two RBI single to push Gambrino and Schweitzer home.

Moravian scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 14-5 advantage.  O’Keefe led off with a single, and junior designated hitter Brad Bodine followed with another single.  Gambrino walked to load the bases before a fielder’s choice had O’Keefe out at home plate.  Shortall then connected on a two-RBI single scoring Bodine and Gambrino.  After the second out of the inning, Shea hit another two-RBI single to chase Schweitzer and Shortall home.

The Mariners scored their final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI sacrifice fly from Bybee.

The Greyhounds scored once in the bottom half of the seventh inning for a 15-6 lead.  O’Keefe led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI sacrifice fly from Gambrino. 

Moravian added three more runs in the bottom of eighth inning to set the final score at 18-6.  Shortall was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and freshman shortstop Dave Zubia had a single.  Shea connected on an RBI single to score Shortall.  Huber singled to load the bases before Zubia was out at home on a fielder’s choice hit by Durso.  O’Keefe had an RBI infield single scoring Shea.  The RBI was O’Keefe’s fourth of the game and extended his school record to 59 for the season.  Bodine reached on a fielder’s choice that had Huber out at the plate before Gambrino had an RBI single scoring Durso.  The hit for Gambrino was the 99th of his career.

The Greyhounds, who have been setting offensive records all season, had a 21-10 advantage in hits.  O’Keefe was five-for-six in the game while Shea was four-for-five with five RBIs and three runs.  Shea also had his 22nd stolen base of the season, extending his career record to 43, and he is now tied for tenth in school history with 112 career hits.  Huber was four-for-five as well with three runs scored to extend his school record to 52 for the season.  Durso was three-for-six to extend his single season record to 59 hits, and he had three runs scored and four RBIs to improve his school record to 129 RBIs.  Bybee was three-for-four for U.S. Merchant Marine with three RBIs while Pierson was two-for-four.

Moravian freshman pitcher Brendan Close tied the school record with his seventh win of the season, allowing six runs on nine hits and a walk in eight innings of action.  Close struck out seven batters to extend his school record to 78 strikeouts for the season.  Junior Dustin Pflug tossed the final inning, giving up one hit and striking out two batters.

The Mariners used four pitchers with Alex Smith taking the loss, allowing ten runs, nine earned, on nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Vs. Juniata College - Won 16-2 - Boxscore

Moravian scored ten runs in the second inning and went on to post a 16-2 win over visiting Juniata College in the final Landmark Conference game of the regular season at Gillespie Field as the Greyhounds won their school record 20th game of the year.

The 2009 squad, which is 20-17 overall and finished second in the Landmark Conference with a 12-6 mark, is first in Moravian’s 20-win season in the 70-year history of the program under the direction of third-year coach Paul Engelhardt.  The previous record of 19 wins was set in 1997, the last time Moravian had a winning record at 19-15.  Moravian has an all-time record of 816-687-10 in 70 seasons of baseball.

The Eagles scored their only two runs on the game in the top of the third inning to cut Moravian’s lead to 11-2.  Senior designated hitter Dane Ott had a two-RBI single for Juniata with one out in the inning.

The Greyhounds came right back and scored three times in the bottom of the third inning for a 14-2 advantage.  After an out, Rock and freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci each had singles.  After the second out of the inning, Gambrino was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Zubia drew an RBI walk that pushed Rock across the plate while Shea had another two-RBI single scoring Bartolacci and Gambrino.

Moravian scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Gambrino singled with one out and moved to third on a single by junior shortstop Mike Zubia.  Shea followed with an RBI sacrifice fly scoring Gambrino.

Vs. Juniata College - Lost 5-0 - Boxscore

The Greyhounds were shutout for the first time this season, falling to Juniata College, 5-0, in the second game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Gillespie Field.

The second game was a pitcher’s duel through the first five innings with neither team able to score.  The Eagles would eventually score two runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Senior outfielder Adam Spadafora drew a walk while senior second baseman Kyle Small reached on a Moravian error.  Sophomore first baseman John Martinez put down a bunt single, and a throwing error on the play allowed Spadafora to score.  Small would score when senior designated hitter Dane Ott hit into a double play.

Juniata would add three runs in the top of the seventh inning.  Senior outfielder Matt Sullivan had an RBI single while Martinez would drive in a run with a bases loaded walk.  Ott was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the final run.

The Eagles had a 5-4 edge in hits in the game with no one from either team collecting more than one hit.

Junior Ryan Cummings took the loss on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.  Senior Thomas Murray allowed a run on a hit and two walks in a third of an inning while junior Andre DeLio recorded the final out of the inning.

Juniata sophomore pitcher John Love went the distance to even his record at 3-3 this season with a four-hit shutout.  He also allowed two walks while striking out five Greyhounds.

Vs. DeSales University - Lost 13-4 - Boxscore

The DeSales University baseball team used an eight-run sixth inning to blow open a close game on its way to a 13-4 non-conference victory over host Moravian at Gillespie Field in the regular season finale for both schools.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI singles from senior designated hitter Zachary Hess and junior outfielder Andrew Feher.

DeSales would add two more runs in the top of the third inning to extend the lead to 4-0.  Sophomore outfielder Carson Slonaker drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single while sophomore outfielder Mike Newland had an RBI sacrifice fly.

Moravian got a run back in the bottom of the third to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 4-1.  Freshman shortstop Dave Zubia led off with a single and would eventually score on an RBI ground out from senior outfielder Joseph Durso, Durso’s 52nd RBI of the season.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when DeSales scored eight times to push its lead to 12-1.  Senior shortstop Greg Treat drove in the first two runs with a two-RBI, bases loaded double.  Senior second baseman Matt Connors followed with a two-RBI single for the Bulldogs.  After a double play by Moravian, DeSales would reload the bases with two singles and a walk.  Hess needed one swing to empty the bases again with a grand slam home run to left center field, Hess’s sixth home run of the season.

The Bulldogs added a run on the top of the ninth inning when Hess reached on an error and scored on an RBI single from Feher.

Moravian would score three times in the bottom of the ninth inning to set the final score.  Sophomore outfielder Kirk Pastre led off with a double and scored on an RBI pinch hit single from freshman Eric Volpe.  Sophomore first baseman Jacob Millen followed with a two-RBI single to score Volpe and freshman pinch hitter Matt Kensecki, who had walked before Volpe’s hit.

DeSales had a 14-9 edge in hits in the game with Feher going four-for-five.  Hess was two-for-three for the Bulldogs with a game high five RBIs.  Sophomore second baseman Jon Baltz led the Greyhounds with a two-for-three performance. 

Moravian, which will be heading to the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament hosted by Susquehanna University beginning May 1st, used a pitching by committee with eight difference players heading to the mound to save the staff for the tournament this weekend.  Junior Joe Melchionna suffered the loss for the Greyhounds, allowing two runs on three hits with one strikeout in two innings of action to start the game. Junior Dustin Pflug gave up two runs on a hit and two walks with one strikeout in an inning of action while senior Thomas Murray allowed two walks and had a strikeout in his inning of action.

Junior Zach Andes had a hit and a walk allowed in his inning of work while junior Brandon Palmisano gave up eight runs on eight hits and two walks in 2/3 of an inning.  Junior Philip Spence tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings while junior Andrew DeLio had a strikeout in his one inning of action.  Freshman Kevin O’Keefe pitched the final inning for Moravian, allowing an unearned run on a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

DeSales also pitched by committee in its final game of the season, using a total of six pitchers.  Senior Chris Brian started for the Bulldogs and earned the win with two scoreless innings of action while allowing a walk and striking out three batters.

Vs. Juniata College - Lost 5-0 - Boxscore

The Greyhounds were shutout for the first time this season, falling to Juniata College, 5-0, in the second game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Gillespie Field.

The second game was a pitcher’s duel through the first five innings with neither team able to score.  The Eagles would eventually score two runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Senior outfielder Adam Spadafora drew a walk while senior second baseman Kyle Small reached on a Moravian error.  Sophomore first baseman John Martinez put down a bunt single, and a throwing error on the play allowed Spadafora to score.  Small would score when senior designated hitter Dane Ott hit into a double play.

Juniata would add three runs in the top of the seventh inning.  Senior outfielder Matt Sullivan had an RBI single while Martinez would drive in a run with a bases loaded walk.  Ott was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the final run.

The Eagles had a 5-4 edge in hits in the game with no one from either team collecting more than one hit.

Junior Ryan Cummings took the loss on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.  Senior Thomas Murray allowed a run on a hit and two walks in a third of an inning while junior Andre DeLio recorded the final out of the inning.

Juniata sophomore pitcher John Love went the distance to even his record at 3-3 this season with a four-hit shutout.  He also allowed two walks while striking out five Greyhounds.

Vs. Juniata College - Won 8-1 - Boxscore

Moravian earned an 8-1 victory over visiting Juniata College in the first game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Gillespie Field to clinch the second seed in the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament at Susquehanna University beginning May 1st, and the win also tied the Moravian school record for wins in a season with 19 that was originally set in 1997. 

In the first game, Moravian would jump out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea singled to lead off the inning and then stole second base.  The stolen base, one of three in the game for Shea, was the 40th of his career, setting the Moravian record.  Shea was eventually picked off before sophomore outfielder Jason Huber walked.  Senior outfielder Joseph Durso followed with an RBI double to score Huber, Durso’s 20th double of the season.  Durso would then steal third base and score on a throwing error.  Freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe drew a walk, and freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci followed with a single.  After an out, sophomore second baseman Jake Schweitzer hit an RBI single to score O’Keefe.

The Greyhounds would extend their lead to 6-0 with three more runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Bartolacci led off with a double and scored on an RBI double from senior third baseman Kevin Gambrino.  Freshman catcher Blake Shortall would send Gambrino home on an RBI sacrifice fly while freshman shortstop Dave Zubia had an RBI single to score Schweitzer, who had reached on a Juniata error.

Juniata scored its only run of the game in the top of the sixth inning.  Senior outfielder Adam Spadafora was hit by a pitch with one out and scored on an RBI single from sophomore first baseman John Martinez. 

Moravian would score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to finish off the scoring.  Shea singled with one out and scored on a two-out RBI double from Durso, his third double of the game, tying the school mark for the third time this season, and the 51st of his career.  O’Keefe would follow with an RBI single to score Durso.  With their RBIs in the inning, Durso and O’Keefe are tied for the school record with 50 RBIs apiece this season. Durso also set the school single season record for total bases with 91.

The Greyhounds had a 13-3 advantage in hits with Durso going three-for-four to tie the school record for hits in a season with 53.  Shea was also three-for-four in the game and now has 21 stolen bases this season and a school record 42 in his career.  Bartolacci had two hits in two at-bats for the Greyhounds.

reshman pitcher Brendan Close took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for the second time this season for Moravian.  He improved to 6-2 on the season and set the school single season record for strikeouts with six in the game to give him 71 for the season.  Close allowed a run on three hits and a walk.

Juniata used two pitchers in the game with junior Tyler Clifford taking the loss after allowing six runs, five earned on nine hits and three walks with two strikeouts in three innings of action.

Vs. Arcadia University - Won 12-4 - Boxscore

Moravian, behind a pair of home runs from freshman catcher Austin Rock snapped a five-game losing streak with a 12-4 non-conference victory over visiting Arcadia University at Gillespie Field.

The Greyhounds, who are now one win shy of tying the school record of 19 victories set in 1997, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea led off with a single, and sophomore outfielder Jason Huber followed with a double.  After an out, freshman designated hitter Kevin O’Keefe hit a two-RBI double to score Shea and Huber and to give O’Keefe sole possession of the single season RBI record at Moravian with his 48th and 49th RBIs of the season.

Moravian put six unearned runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning to take an 8-0 lead.  Senior third baseman Kevin Gambrino reached on an error to start the inning, and sophomore second baseman Jon Baltz singled.  Freshman shortstop Dave Zubia hit an RBI single to score Gambrino; however, Zubia would be out on a fielder’s choice hit by Shea.  After the out, Shea stole second base, his 18th stolen base of the season and the 39th of his career, which ties the Moravian record.  Huber would connect on an RBI sacrifice fly to send Baltz home before senior outfielder Joseph Durso hit an RBI single scoring Shea.  The RBI was Durso’s 48th of the season and the 121st of his career, a school record he already owns. Durso's hit was also his 50th of the season, the second straight year Durso has recorded 50 hitsm and he is second in school history with 164 hits.  O’Keefe drew a walk before Rock connected on a three-run homer, his fifth home run of the season.

The Greyhounds pushed its lead to 10-0 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Baltz reached on an error to lead off, and Zubia followed with a single.  Baltz and Zubia pulled off a double steal before Shea hit an RBI ground out to score Baltz.  Zubia would score on an Arcadia error on a ball hit by Durso.

The Knights scored their first two runs of the game in the top of the fifth inning.  Senior outfielder Anthony Champi reached on an error to lead the inning off, and freshman outfielder Mark Bowman reached on another Moravian error with two outs.  Junior outfielder Matt Pempkowski followed with a two-RBI single.

Moravian scored its final two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning to push its lead back to ten runs at 12-2.  O’Keefe singled to start the inning, and Rock followed with a two-run homer, his team leading sixth of the season.

Arcadia’s final two runs would come on leadoff home runs in the top of the seventh and eighth innings.  Junior pitcher/designated hitter Joe Rafanelli led off the seventh with his first homer of the season while senior third baseman Dan Morris started the eighth with his team-leading third home run for Arcadia.

Moravian had a 13-6 advantage in hits in the game with Zubia going two-for-two and Rock going two-for-three with the two homers and five RBIs.  Shea and O’Keefe also had two hits for the Greyhounds.  Pempkowski and Morris were each two-for-four for Arcadia.

Junior Philip Spence earned his fourth win of the season on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing two runs, both unearned on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings of action.  Junior Brandon Palmisano tossed two innings, allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts while junior Andrew DeLio tossed the final inning with one strikeouts.

Rafanelli took the loss for the Knights, allowing 12 runs, only four earned, on 12 hits and two walks with two strikeouts in six innings of action.  Freshman pitcher Steve Romond finished off the game, allowing a hit and two walks in two innings.

At King's College - Lost 14-8 - Boxscore

The King’s College baseball team jumped out to a 12-2 lead after three innings and held off visiting Moravian for a 14-8 non-conference win as the Greyhounds dropped their fifth straight game.

The Monarchs took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double from pitcher/designated hitter Jon Venarchick and an RBI single by third baseman Jim Troianiello.

The Greyhounds cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the second inning.  Freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe doubled to start the inning and scored on an RBI single by freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci.

King’s would push four runs home in the bottom of the second inning to extend its lead to 6-2.  First baseman Eric Matula and catcher Matt Unger each had RBI singles in the inning for the Monarchs while Venarchick had an RBI triple on which two runs scored.

Moravian scored once in the top of the third inning when freshman catcher Blake Shortall doubled to start the inning and came home on a two-out RBI double from senior outfielder Joseph Durso.

The Monarchs broke the game open with six more runs in the bottom of the third inning to push its lead to 12-2.  Outfielder Gracjan Kraszewski started the scoring with a one-out solo homer.  Troianiello had a two-RBI single in the inning while Matula, Venarchick and shortstop Rob Fravel each had RBI singles.

The Greyhounds scored a run in the top of the fourth inning.  Junior outfielder Brad Bodine led off with a single and moved to third on a single from freshman third baseman Gregg Steinman.  Shortall then hit an RBI infield single to score Bodine.

Moravian pulled within 12-8 after scoring five runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Durso led off with a double, extending his single season school record to 19, and O’Keefe followed with an RBI double to score Durso.  After a pitching change, Bartolacci hit another RBI single to score O’Keefe.  Sophomore second baseman Jake Schweitzer walked with one out before Shortall hit a two-out RBI single to score Bartolacci.  Sophomore outfielder Jason Huber then connected on a two-RBI triple scoring Schweitzer and Shortall with the Greyhounds’ final runs of the game.

King’s scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI ground out from Fravel.  The Monarchs finished off the scoring with a run in the seventh inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by Unger after Venarchick led off the inning with a triple.

The Monarchs had a 19-15 edge in hits with Venarchick going four-for-four with three RBIs.  Matula, Unger, Troianiello, Fravel, Kraszewski, second baseman Matt Feci and outfielder Phil Moskowitz all had two hits for King’s. 

Shortall led Moravian with a three-for-four performance at the plate for Moravian while O’Keefe was three-for-five.  Huber, Durso and Bartolacci each had two hits.  Durso and O’Keefe each had an RBI to keep pace on a new school record for RBIs in a season with both players at 47.  The RBI for Durso was the 120th of his career, which is also a Moravian record.

Junior Joe Melchionna started on the mound for the Greyhounds, and took the loss after allowing 12 runs, eight of them earned, on 15 hits to go with three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.  Senior Thomas Murray tossed 2 1/3 innings, giving up a run on two hits and a walk. O’Keefe pitched the final three innings, allowing a run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The Monarchs also used three pitchers with Peter Fanning earning the victory with an inning of relief work after Venarchick started.  Jeremy Bonser earned a save with four innings of relief action.

At The Catholic University of America - Lost 9-8 - Boxscore

The Catholic University of America baseball team capped a three-run, ninth inning rally with the winning run scoring on a wild pitch, the second run of the inning to score on a wild pitch, to come from behind after blowing a five-run lead, defeating visiting Moravian , 9-8, in the final game of the Landmark Conference series between the schools.

Despite the loss and losses each contest in the three-game series, the Greyhounds clinched a berth in the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament that will be hosted by Susquehanna University May 1st to 3rd with the other results around the conference Sunday afternoon.  The postseason berth for Moravian will be its first under third-year head coach Paul Engelhardt, and the first for the program since 2004.

Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, and sophomore outfielder Jason Huber followed with a single. After an out, freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe connected on an RBI single to score Shea.

The Cardinals answered with six runs, five of them unearned; in the bottom of the first inning to take a 6-1 lead.  Catcher Patrick Quintana had a two-RBI single, and third baseman Troy Langway connected on a grand slam home run.

Moravian pulled within two runs, 6-4, in the top of the third inning after pushing three runs home.  With two outs, junior designated hitter Brad Bodine and senior third baseman Kevin Gambrino each singled.  A wild pitch would move the runners up a base, and sophomore second baseman Jake Schweitzer drew a walk to load the bases.  Freshman catcher Austin Rock came on to pinch hit and was hit by a pitch to score Bodine.  Freshman shortstop Dave Zubia followed with a two-RBI single scoring Gambrino and Schweitzer.

The Greyhounds would tie the contest at 6-6 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Huber singled with an out and moved to third on a single from Durso.  O’Keefe then hit an RBI ground out to score Huber while Durso would cross the plate on an RBI single from Gambrino.

Moravian scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to take an 8-6 lead.  Rock was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Zubia followed with a single.  After a fielder’s choice by Shea that had Rock out at third, and the second out of the inning, Durso was walked intentionally to load the bases.  O’Keefe ripped a two-RBI single to send Zubia and Shea home and put the Greyhounds ahead for the first time in the game.

Catholic would score three times in the bottom of the ninth inning for the victory with two outs.  With one out to start the inning, second baseman Timothy Mierwza and outfielder Dimitri Deoudes singled.  Outfielder Tommy Little drew a walk to load the bases.  After a Moravian pitching change, Mierzwa scampered home on a wild pitch.  Designated hitter Joseph Devine delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to score Deoudes, and Little moved to third on the play.  After another Greyhound pitching change, Little scored the winning run on another wild pitch.

The Greyhounds had a 14-11 edge in hits in the game with Zubia going four-for-five.  Huber was three-for-six for Moravian while O’Keefe and Bodine were each two-for-five.  O’Keefe had four RBIs to tie Durso for the single season Greyhound record of 46 RBIs in a season while Huber scored one run to extend his single season school record to 45 runs scored.  Mierzwa was three-for-four to lead Catholic while Devine was two-for-two.

Moravian used four pitchers in the game with freshman Thomas Fenyak starting and going 7 2/3 innings.  He allowed six runs, only one earned on nine hits and six walks with three strikeouts.  Junior Philip Spence dropped to 3-3 on the year after giving up three runs on two hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning.  Junior Zach Andes faced one batter, recording an out while junior Andrew DeLio was on the mound when the game ended.

The Cardinals used five pitchers in the contest with Jack Mahoney earning a victory with a strikeout in an inning of action.  Han Schaler started for Catholic and allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk with one strikeout in 2 2/3 innings of work.

The Catholic University of America baseball team completed a sweep of visiting Moravian with an 11-7 win in the second game of the twinbill. The loss kept the Greyhounds from clinching their first postseason appearance since 2004, and also knocked Moravian out of first place in the conference standings.

the Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Designated hitter Joseph Devine had an RBI single while first baseman Mike Goodman and catcher Patrick Quintana each hit RBI sacrifice flies.

Moravian would get two runs back in the top of the second inning to cut the lead to 3-2.  Junior designated hitter Brad Bodine led off with a single before sophomore second baseman Schweitzer walked.  Senior third baseman Kevin Gambrino followed with an infield single to load the bases.  Freshman shortstop Dave Zubia would drive in Bodine with an RBI ground out while senior outfielder Eric Shea hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Schweizter.

Catholic would extend its lead to 8-2 with five runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Outfielder Dimitri Deoudes led off with a solo home run while Goodman had an RBI single.  Shortstop LJ Travaglia added an RBI sacrifice fly while outfielder Cory Hudson hit a two-RBI single.

The Cardinals added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for an 11-2 lead on a two-run homer from Goodman and a solo homer from Quintana in the next at-bat.

Moravian would score five runs in the top of the fifth inning to finish the scoring in the game.  Shea led off the inning with triple for the 100th hit of his career, the 14th player in school history to reach 100 career hits.  Senior outfielder Joseph Dusro would hit an RBI single to score Shea, and after freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe was hit by a pitch, freshman catcher Austin Rock hit a three-run homer, his fourth home run of the season.  Bodine would go deep in the following at-bat for his third home run of the season.

Both teams had nine hits in the second game with Devine going three-for-four for Catholic.  Goodman was also two-for-two with four RBIs for the Cardinals.  Durso and Bodine were each two-for-four for the Greyhounds.

Moravian used three pitchers with junior Ryan Cummings falling to 3-2 on the year after allowing seven runs, six earned, on five hits and a walk with one strikeout in two-plus innings of work.  Junior Joe Melchionna tossed two innings, giving up four runs on four hits and a walk with one strikeout while junior Andrew DeLio tossed the final two innings with two strikeouts.

Catholic starter Joe Sable earned the victory after allowing seven runs on seven hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.  Jordan Clark tossed the final 2 2/3 innings for the Cardinals and allowed two hits while striking out five batters.

The Greyhounds had their six-game Landmark Conference winnin streak snapped in the first game of a conference doubleheader at The Catholic University of America, falling 12-4.

The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the first game.  Sophomore second baseman Jake Schweitzer reached on a Cardinal error to start the inning, and he moved to third base on a single from freshman catcher Blake Shortall.  Schweitzer scored when freshman shortstop Dave Zubia grounded into a double play.

Catholic tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single from second baseman Timothy Mierzwa.

Moravian answered with a run in the top of the third inning to retake the lead, 2-1.  Senior outfielder Joseph Durso drew a walk to lead off the inning, and he moved to third on a single from freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe.  Freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci then hit an RBI ground out to score Durso.

The Cardinals would take their first lead of the game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Mierzwa had an RBI single as did outfielder Dimitri Deoudes.  Outfielder Tommy Little added a two-run single.

Catholic pushed its lead to 7-2 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-RBI double from outfielder Cory Hudson.

Moravian would get two runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull within 7-4.  Schweitzer and Shortall hit back-to-back singles to start the inning, and Zubia drove Schweitzer home with an RBI single.  Shortall ended up being out in a run down between third base and home before Durso hit an RBI single to score Zubia.

The Cardinals finished off the scoring with five runs on the bottom of the sixth inning.  First baseman Mike Goodman had an RBI single as did catcher Patrick Quintana.  Shortstop LJ Travaglia and third baseman Troy Langway each had RBI singles while Mierzwa had his third RBI single of the game to finish off the scoring.
 

Catholic had a 17-10 edge in hits in the game with Mierzwa and Hudseon each going three-for-four.  Travaglia was three-for-three for the Cardinals while Little, Langway and Quintana each had two hits. Durso, Shortall and senior outfielder Eric Shea were each two-for-three for the Greyhounds.  Shea’s two hits moved him within one of 100 for his career.

Moravian freshman starting pitcher Brendan Close lasted just 4 1/3 innings while suffering his second loss of the season.  Close allowed seven runs, five of them earned, on ten hits and two walks, and he did strike out three batters to tie the Greyhound single season record of 65 strikeouts.  Close tied the mark set by Jon Yard set in 1996.

Junior Brandon Palmisano tossed 1 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits with one strikeout.  Junior Joe Melchionna pitched to one batter with a strikeout.

Catholic also used three pitchers in the first game with Kevin Sweeney earning the victory after allowing four runs, three of them earned, on nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

At Misericordia University - Lost 8-5 - Boxscore

The Misericordia University baseball team used a five-run third inning to take a 6-3 lead on the way to posting an 8-5 win over visiting Moravian in non-conference action.

The Greyhounds, who dropped their sixth straight non-conference game, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Sophomore shortstop Jason Huber was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to third on a single from senior outfielder Joseph Durso.  Freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe followed with a two-RBI single to score Huber and Durso.

Moravian pushed its lead to 3-0 with a run in the top of the second inning.  Senior designated hitter Thomas Czarnecki led off with a single and eventually scored on an RBI ground out from senior outfielder Eric Shea.

The Cougars would get one run back in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI ground out by designated hitter Andres Gonzalez to cut the Moravian lead to 3-1.

Misericordia scored five times in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead for good at 6-3.  First baseman Brandon Calafut drove in a pair of runs with an RBI single, and second baseman Jamie Philippi also added a two-RBI single.  Gonzalez drove in the final run of the winning with an RBI single.

The Cougars would add two more runs on the bottom of the fourth inning for an 8-3 edge with shortstop Nate Newman hitting a one-out, two-run homer.

Moravian finished off the scoring with two runs in the top of the eighth inning.  Huber walked with one out, and two batters later O’Keefe connected on a two-run home run, his team leading fifth homer of the season.

Misericordia had a 12-6 edge in hits in the game with catcher Chris Tuttle going three-for-four.  Newman, Philippi and outfielder Jeff Slanovec each had two hits for the Cougars.  O’Keefe had half of Moravian’s hits, going three-for-four I the contest.

The Greyhounds used three pitchers with junior Philip Spence taking the loss to drop to 3-2 on the year.  Spence allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk with one strikeout in three innings of action.  Junior Brandon Palmisano tossed three innings, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks with one strikeout.  Junior Joe Melchionna tossed the final two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

Andrew Yasinski tossed a complete game for Misericordia, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Vs. DeSales University at Limport Stadium - Postponed to April 29

Moravian's non-conference game versus DeSales University at Limeport Stadium for Tuesday, April 14th has been postponed due to poor field conditions and inclement weather. The game has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 29th at 4:00 p.m. at Gillespie Field in Bethlehem.

Moravian extended its Landmark Conference winning streak to six games and kept its two-game lead in the conference standings with a 10-6 victory over host Drew University to complete a three-game sweep of the Rangers.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and sophomore outfielder Jason Huber singled.  After senior outfielder Joseph Durso walked to load the bases, freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe connected on a grand slam home run, his fourth homer of the season.

Drew would cut the Moravian lead in half with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning with both runs coming on a Greyhound throwing error.

Moravian would get one run back in the top of the third to push the lead to 5-2.  Durso singled with one out and moved to third on a two-out single from freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci before crossing the plate on a balk. 

The Greyhounds added a run in the top of the fourth inning for a 6-2 lead.  Sophomore second baseman Jake Schweitzer led off with a single and stole second base before scoring on an RBI single from freshman catcher Blake Shortall.

Drew would pull within a run, 6-5, with three runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning.  Third baseman Peter Tuchol and outfielder Drew Obergfell each had RBI singles while the third run scored on a double play.

Moravian scored again with a run in the top of the sixth inning for a 7-5 lead when senior third baseman Kevin Gambrino led off the inning with a solo home run, his first homer of the season.

The Greyhounds would add three runs in the top of the eighth inning for a 10-5 lead.  Sophomore second baseman Jon Baltz drew a walk to lead off the inning, and after two outs, Shea was hit by a pitch again before stealing second base.  Huber followed with a two-RBI single to chase Baltz and Shea home.  Durso would draw a walk before O’Keefe delivered an RBI double to score Huber.

The Rangers scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on Moravian’s third error of the game.

Moravian had a12-8 edge in hits in the game with Schweitzer going two-for-three.  Huber and O’Keefe were each two-for-five for the Greyhounds.  Huber also scored two runs to raise school single season record to 42 runs scored this spring.  Matt McGrath was two-for-three for Drew.

Greyhound freshman pitcher Thomas Fenyak went the distance on the mound, allowing six runs, just three of them earned, on eight hits and two walks with seven strikeouts as Fenyak improved to 5-2 on the season.

The Rangers used four pitchers in the game with Zach Bircks taking the loss after allowing seven runs on nine hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings of action.

At Drew University - Postponed to April 13th

The final game of the Moravian at Drew University Landmark Conference series scheduled for Saturday, April 11th in Madison, New Jersey, has been postponed due to inclement weather. The contest has been rescheduled for Monday, April 13th at 3:30 p.m. at Drew.

At Drew University - Won 21-1 - Boxscore

The Greyhounds completed a Landmark Conference doubleheader sweep of Drew University with a 21-1 win in the second game. It was Moravian's fifth straight win in conference action and kept the Greyhounds in first place, and it was also the fourth time this year that the team has scored more than 20 runs in a game.

Neither team would score until the Greyhounds put up six runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Freshman catcher Austin Rock got the scoring going with a one-out, solo home run, his third homer of the season.  Dave Zubia followed with a double while senior outfielder Eric Shea singled.  Sophomore outfielder Jason Huber would connect on a two-RBI triple to chase Dave Zubia and Shea home.  Senior outfielder Joseph Durso then hit a two-run homer, his third home run of the season to score Huber, and freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe went back-to-back with a solo home run, his third dinger of the year.

Moravian pushed the lead to 11-0 with five more runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Dave Zubia would walk to start the inning, and after two outs, Durso hit his second two-run homer of the game and his fourth home run of the year.  O’Keefe would follow with a single and a stolen base before scoring on an RBI single from junior designated hitter Bodine.  Senior third baseman Kevin Gambrino added a single while sophomore second baseman Jon Baltz walked to load the bases.  Rock finished off the inning with a two-RBI single to score Bodine and Gambrino.

Drew scored it’s only run doubleheader in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single from Zack Bircks.

The Greyhounds would finish the doubleheader with their second ten-run inning of the day, pushing ten runs home in the top of the seventh inning.  Huber and Durso led off the inning with singles while O’Keefe walked to load the bases.  After a pitching change, Bodine drew an RBI bases loaded walk to score Huber while Gambrino had an RBI single to send Durso home.  Baltz followed with an RBI single to score O’Keefe before Rock drew another RBI bases loaded walk scoring Bodine.  After another pitching change, Gambrino scored on a wild pitch.  Junior outfielder Andrew DeLio then had an RBI bases loaded walk to score Baltz while freshman outfielder Matt Kensecki added another RBI bases loaded walk to score Rock. Sophmore first baseman Jacob Millen hit an RBI ground out to send Dave Zubia while senior designated hitter Thomas Czarnecki hit a two-RBI triple to score Kensecki and DeLio with the final two runs of the game.

Moravian had a 21-4 advantage in hits in the second game with Durso going four-for-five with four RBIs and three runs scored to extend his single season school record to 44 RBIs for the game.  Durso also became the second player in school history to reach 150 career hits, now with 153.  Huber and Gambrino were each three-for-five in the game while Rock was two-for-four with four RBIs. Huber added two more runs to extend his school single season record to 40 runs scored.  O’Keefe added two hits while Shea’s hit gave him 97 for his career.

Junior Ryan Cummings improved to 3-1 on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing a run on three hits and three walks with one strikeout in six innings of action.  Junior Philip Spence gave up one hit while striking out three Rangers in the final inning of the game.  Drew used six pitchers with Evan Martens taking the loss after allowing six runs in 4 1/3 innings.

At Drew University - Won 23-0 - Boxscore

Moravian won its fourth straight Landmark Conference game and opened a conference doubleheader at Drew University with a 23-0 win over the Rangers in the first game of the twinbill, the third time this season the Greyhounds have scored more than 20 runs in a contest.

Freshman pitcher Brendan Close improved to 5-1 on the mound this season with his second shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out six batters.  Close now has 62 strikeouts in his debut season to move to third in school history for a single season, just three strikeouts shy of the record of 65.

The Greyhounds gave Close all of the offense he would need before he even went to the mound with three runs in the top of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea led off the game with a single and sophomore outfielder Jason Huber singled.  Senior outfielder Joseph Durso then connected on an RBI single to score Shea, and freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe followed with an RBI single to send Huber home.  Durso crossed the plate on a double play with the final run of the inning.

Moravian would tie the school record it set earlier this season with 11 runs in the top of the third inning to extend the lead to 14-0.  Huber got the inning going with a triple while Durso reached on an error.  O’Keefe hit an RBI double to score Huber while freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci reached on an error that allowed both Durso and Huber to score.  After Bartolacci moved to second on a wild pitch, senior third baseman Kevin Gambrino was hit by a pitch.  Bartolacci and Gambrino pulled off a double steal before sophomore second baseman Jake Schweitzer walked to load the bases.  Freshman catcher Blake Shortall followed with a two-RBI single sending Bartolacci and Gambrino home.  Freshman shortstop Dave Zubia drew a walk to reload the bases before Shea reached on an error to score Schweitzer.  Huber came back to the plate and delivered an RBI single scoring Shortall while Durso added a two-RBI single scoring Zubia and Shea.  Gambrino would chase Huber home with an RBI sacrifice fly while Schweitzer had an RBI single to score Durso with the final run of the inning.

The Greyhounds added three runs in the top of the fourth inning for a 17-0 lead.  Shea doubled with one out, and he scored on an RBI single from Huber.  Durso reached on an error before O’Keefe hit a two-RBI double to send Huber and Durso across the plate.

Moravian finished off the scoring with six runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Senior outfielder Thomas Czarnecki led off with a double and sophomore first baseman Jacob Millen walked.  Junior designated hitter Brad Bodine singled to load the bases.  After two outs, Shortall drew an RBI walk to score Czarnecki.  Junior shortstop Mike Zubia then connected on a three-RBI triple to empty the bases before Shea hit an RBI single to score Mike Zubia.  Huber finished off the scoring with an RBI double to chase Shea home.

The Greyhounds had a 22-4 advantage in hits in the game with Huber going five-for-six with four runs and three RBIs. Huber broke the school record for runs in a season, now with 38.  Shea was four-for-six with four runs to move within four hits of 100 for his career while O’Keefe was three-for-four with four RBIs.  Durso was two-for-four with four runs scored, and he set his second single season school record of the year with three RBIs to give him 40 for the year.  Bodine was two-for-three off the bench for the Greyhounds.

Drew used three pitchers in the contest with Tom Clark taking the loss after allowing ten runs, only four earned, on eight hits and two walks in two-plus innings of action.

At Keystone College - Lost 17-4 - Boxscore

The Keystone College baseball team, ranked 13th in the nation in this week’s American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Top 30 Poll, broke a 2-2 tie with a five run fourth inning to post a 17-4 non-conference win over visiting Moravian.

The Giants jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Ben Fish.

The Greyhounds would take a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning.  Senior third baseman Kevin Gambrino walked with one out and sophomore second baseman Jake Schweitzer was hit by a pitch.  Freshman catcher Blake Shortall singled to load the bases before freshman shortstop Dave Zubia hit a two-RBI single to score Gambrino and Schweizter.

Keystone tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning when outfielder Ray Jackson hit an infield RBI single to score outfielder Josh Hinkle, who had walked and stole two bases.

The Giants took control of the game with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Hinkle drove in the first run with an RBI single while Jackson added an RBI double.  Shortstop Esteban Meletiche added an RBI single for Keystone while third baseman Eric Groff had a two-RBI double.

Moravian would get a run back in the top of the fifth inning when senior outfielder Eric Shea led off the inning with a solo home run, his first of the season.

Keystone put two more runs on the board in the bottom half of the fifth inning for a 9-3 lead.  Catcher Angel Fargas hit a two-out, two-run home run to score Hinkle.  The Giants pushed their lead to 13-3 with four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The first runs scored on a Moravian error before Fish connected on a three-run homer.

The Greyhounds would score their final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning.  Shea reached on an error and junior outfielder Brad Bodine drew a walk.  Senior outfielder Joseph Durso reached on a fielder’s choice that had everyone save to load the bases.  Freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe then grounded into a double play that scored Shea.

The Giants finished off the scoring with four more runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Groff hit a three-run home run to score Jackson and second baseman Kyle Conrad.  Fish followed with his second homer of the game, a solo home run.

Keystone had a 23-7 advantage in hits with Jackson and Groff each going four-for-five.  Hinkle was three-for-three for the Giants while Conrad was three-for-five.  Fish and Meletiche each added two hits.  Sophomore outfielder Jason Huber led Moravian with a two-for-three performance.

The Greyhounds used seven pitchers in the game with junior Zack Andes taking the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in an inning of action.  Junior Joe Melchionna started for Moravian and allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits and a walk in two innings of action.  Junior Philip Spence tossed an inning and allowed just one hit while senior Thomas Murray gave up two runs on two hits and a walk in an inning of action.  Junior Andrew DeLio was touched for four unearned runs on five hits in his inning of work while junior Andrew DelRossi allowed four runs on five hits with two strikeouts in an inning.  Freshman Thomas Fenyak tossed the final inning for Moravian, allowing a walk while striking out two batters.

Keystone had four pitchers in the game with Brad Higgins earning third win of the season after allowing three runs on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts in six innings of action.

Vs. The College of New Jersey - Lost 15-4 - Boxscore

Freshmen Mike Galeotafiore and Andrew Priece each hit two-out home runs in the first two innings to help The College of New Jersey jump out to a 10-0 lead on its way to a 15-4 non-conference victory over Moravian at Gillespie Field. The loss snapped the Greyhounds' three-game winning streak.

After two quick outs in the top of the first inning, the Lions would put together a six-run, two-out rally.  Senior Vince Mazzaccaro had an RBI double while senior Jeff Toth had an RBI single.  A pair of walks would load the bases for Galeotafiore, who connected on a grand slam homer down the right field line for the 6-0 lead.

In the top of the second inning, Moravian would again get two outs before Preice hit a three-run home run to right center field to give TCNJ a 9-0 lead.  The Lions added a run in the top of the third inning on a triple from sophomore Anthony Palmiotto and an RBI ground out by senior Adam Tussey for a 10-0 lead.

Moravian would get on the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Lions’ lead to 10-3.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea and sophomore shortstop Jason Huber each drew walks to lead off the inning.  Senior outfielder Joseph Durso then followed with a two-RBI double down the right field line to score Shea and Huber.  The double was Durso’s 17th of the season, a school record, in 33 hits, and he improved his school career records to 46 doubles and 110 RBIs on the play.  Also on the play, a pair of TCNJ coaches were ejected for arguing if Durso’s hit was a fair ball.  Durso would eventually come home on a sacrifice fly by freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci.

The Lions would push five more runs home in the top of the eighth inning for a 15-3 lead.  Junior Ryan Anzelone was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for an RBI while Tussey had an RBI single.  A Moravian error allowed two more runs to score before Toth hit an RBI single.

Moravian finished the scoring in the game with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning.  Senior infielder Kevin Gambrino connected on a one-out double and scored on an RBI single from freshman shortstop Dave Zubia, who returned to the line-up as a substitution after missing the last nine games with an injury.

TCNJ had a 16-8 edge on hits in the game with Toth going four-for-six.  Junior Chris Eperson was three-for-five in the game while Tussey, Priece and Palmiotto each had two hits for the Lions.  Gambrino was two-for-four for the Greyhounds while Durso turned in a two-for-five game.

Moravian used seven pitchers in the game with sophomore Luke Skutches taking the loss after allowing nine runs on six hits and four walks with two strikeouts in just 1 2/3 innings of action.  Junior Andrew DeLio tossed 2 1/3 innings in relief, allowing a run on two hits and a walk with a strikeouts.  Juniors Zack Andes, Brandon Palmisano and Ryan Cummings, senior Thomas Murray and freshman Kevin O’Keefe all tossed an inning in relief for the Greyhounds.  Palmisano recorded two strikeouts while allowing a hit.  Andes and O’Keefe each had one strikeout with Andes giving up one hit and O’Keefe allowing two hits.  Cummings gave up a walk and a also had a strikeout while Murray was touched for five runs, just two earned, on four hits and a walk.

The Lions used just two pitchers in the game with sophomore Connor Henderson tossing eight innings, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out 11 Moravian batters.  Junior AJ Adamczyk pitched the final inning, giving up a run on two hits with one strikeout.

At Centenary (NJ) College - Postponed

The Greyhounds non-conference game at Centenary College was called after two innings of action when the umpires deemed the field had become unplayable. It has not been announced it the game will be replayed this season.

Vs. The University of Scranton - Won 4-2 - Boxscore

Moravian rallied from a 2-1 deficit with a run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to post a 4-2 Landmark Conference victory over The University of Scranton at Gillespie Field as the Greyhounds finished off the three-game sweep of the Royals to remain in a tie for first place in the Landmark Conference.

Moravian took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea singled to lead off the inning and scored on a one-out RBI double by senior outfielder Joseph Durso.  The double was Durso’s school record 16th of the season in just 32 hits.  Durso is also the school record holder for career doubles, now with 45, and RBIs, now with 108, and he is second in school history with 146 hits after going two-for-four in the game.

Scranton scored both of its runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead.  Senior designated hitter Chris Psihoules led off with a single, and junior first baseman Chris Bligh followed with a walk.  Sophomore outfielder David Giglio then hit an RBI double to chase Psihoules home.  Freshman second baseman Rocky Sawyer drew a walk to load the bases before sophomore second Joe Amicucci hit a one-out RBI sacrifice fly to score Bligh with the go ahead run.

The Greyhounds would tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single run.  Sophomore second baseman Jake Schweitzer led off the inning with a double and scored on a two-out RBI single from senior third baseman Kevin Gambrino.

Moravian would push the go ahead run and an insurance run home in the bottom of the seventh inning.  With one out, Durso singled and scored on an RBI double by freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe with O’Keefe moving to third on the throw home.  Three batters later, freshman pinch hitter Joe Bartolacci ripped a two-out, RBI double to score O’Keefe.

The Greyhounds had a 10-7 advantage in hits in the game with O’Keefe going two-for-three and Durso going two-for-four.  Sophomore outfielder Chris Stallone was two-for-five for the Royals.

Moravian junior Brandon Palmisano earned his first win of the season on the mound for the Greyhounds with four innings of relief work.  Palmisano allowed four hits and struck out two batters.  He came in relief for freshman starter Thomas Fenyak, who left four batters into the fourth inning after an injury.  Fenyak was touched for two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out four batters.  Junior Zack Andes tossed two thirds of an inning of relief for the Greyhounds while senior Thomas Murray worked the final 1 1/3 innings for his first save of the season.

Senior Charles Comprelli started on the mound for Scranton and dropped to 1-2 on the year after allowing four runs on ten hits and three walks with three strikeouts in seven innings of action.  Senior Mike Sidlowski tossed the final inning for the Royals with one walk and one strikeout.

Moravian held off a seventh inning rally by visiting The University of Scranton to earn a 6-5 win in the second game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Gillespie Field to sweep the twinbill.

Scranton again took an early lead in the first inning, scoring twice in the top of the first in game two.  Sophomore Chris Stallone led off with a single and scored on an RBI single from senior Charles Comprelli, and junior Chris Bligh had an RBI ground out to score Comprelli.

Moravian would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea reached on a throwing error to lead off the inning, and he stole second base.  Shea moved to third on a deep fly ball from sophomore shortstop Jason Huber before scoring on n RBI sacrifice fly from freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci.

The Greyhounds tied the game at 2-2 an inning later in the bottom of the fourth.  Freshman catcher Austin Rock singled to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino.  After Rock moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt, Shea hit an RBI single to chase Rock home.

Moravian would take the lead, 3-2, with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Bartolacci reached on an error with one out and sophomore Kirk Pastre came in to pinch run.  Pastre moved to second on a passed ball, and after a dropped foul ball down the right field line, junior outfielder Brad Bodine hit an RBI single to score Pastre.

The Greyhounds added three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 6-2 lead.  Gambrino reached on an infield single with one out and Shea walked.  Huber connected on an RBI single to score Gambrino.  Senior outfielder Joseph Durso then followed with his school record tying 15th double of the season, tying his own mark, to drive in Shea and Huber.  Durso also owns the school career mark for doubles, now 44, and pushed his RBI mark to 106.

Scranton attempted its own rally in the top of the seventh inning of the second game, scoring three runs to cut the Moravian lead to 6-5 and leaving the bases loaded.  Stallone had a two RBI single in the inning for the Royals while third run scored on a Moravian error.  Scranton had a 9-7 edge in hits in the game with Stallone, Comprelli and Chris Psihoules each having two hits.

Junior Ryan Cummings earned the win for the Greyhounds, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Junior Brandon Palimsano and sophomore Luke Skutches each tossed a third of an inning with Skutches allowing a run and a walk.  Junior Philip Spence finished the game on the mound for Moravian, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in an inning of action.

Todd Magee took the loss for Scranton, allowing three runs, just one earned, on four hits and five walks with two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

The Greyhounds rallied for three runs with two outs in the bottom of the sevneth inning to post a 3-2 victory over The University of Scranton in the first game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Gillespie Field. The win also snapped a three-game losing streak for Moravian.

The Royals took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the first game.  Sophomore Chris Stallone led off with a single and scored on an RBI double from junior Chris Bligh.

Scranton would extend its lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning when David Giglio led off with a double and scored on an RBI single from freshman Rocky Sawyer.

The Greyhounds were down to their final out before the Moravian offense would get things going.  With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino doubled to right center field.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea reached on a dropped fly ball that allowed Gambrino to score.  Sophomore shortstop Jason Huber nearly ended the game when hit line drive to left field hit the top of the wall for an RBI double to score Shea.  Senior outfielder Joseph Durso, Moravian’s all-time leader in RBIs, then hit a game-winning RBI single through the left side of the infield to score Huber to cap the two-out, three-run rally.  The RBI was the 105th of Durso’s career.

The Greyhounds had an 8-6 edge in hits with Huber going three-for-four.  Shea also had two hits for Moravian.

Vs. Haverford College - Lost 11-7 - Boxscore

The Haverford College baseball team scored the final four runs to break a 7-7 tie and earn an 11-7 non-conference win over Moravian at Gillespie Field as the Greyhounds suffered their third straight loss.

The Fords jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on RBI singles from senior outfielder Dean Laganosky and sophomore shortstop/pitcher Charlie Carluccio.

Moravian would tie the game in the bottom of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea drew a walk and stole second.  Senior outfielder Joseph Durso hit a one-out RBI double to score Shea, and after stealing third, Durso scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe.

Haverford retook the lead in the top of the second inning, 3-2, on an RBI ground out from senior outfielder Evan Tibbetts.  The Fords added three more runs in the top of the third inning for a 6-2 lead.  Freshman catcher Jeremy Zoll had an RBI single while Carluccio scored on a double play and Zoll crossed the plate on an error. 

The Greyhounds answered with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to pull within a run, 6-5.  Shea again started the inning with a walk and a steal of second base.  Sophomore shortstop Jason Huber followed with an RBI double to score Shea before Durso connected on his second RBI double of the game scoring Huber.  Durso moved to third on a fly out from O’Keefe before scoring on an RBI single from junior outfielder Brad Bodine.

The Fords scored a run in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Carluccio for a 7-5 lead.

Moravian tied the game in the bottom half of the fourth inning.  Freshman catcher Blake Shortall led off the inning with a single, and Shea singled with one out.  Two batters later, Durso hit his team leading 14th double of the season, this time a two-RBI double scoring Shortall and Shea.  Dusro already owns the school record for doubles and RBIs in a career, now with 43 doubles and 104 RBIs.

Haverford would take the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run home run from senior outfielder Chris Dooley to build a 9-7 lead.  The Fords added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning on a two-RBI double from Carluccio.

Haverford had a 13-12 edge in hits in the game with Carluccio going three-for-four with four RBIs.  Laganosky and junior second baseman Jake Kaden each had two hits for the Fords.  Durso led the Greyhounds with three hits, all doubles to tie the school record for doubles in a game for the second time this season, while Huber and Bodine each had two hits. Shea tied the school mark with four stolen bases in the game to move into third in school history with 33 stolen bases.

Moravian used six pitchers in the game with junior Philip Spence tossed the four innings, allowing seven runs, just three of them earned, eight hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Junior Andrew DelRossi tossed an inning while junior Zack Andes suffered the loss, allowing two runs on three hits.  Senior Thomas Murray and juniors Joe Melchionna and Ryan Cummings all tossed an inning with Melchionna allowing two unearned runs on two hits with two strikeouts and Cummings striking out one batter.

The Fords used four pitchers in the game with senior Jason Miller earning the victory in relief after giving up five hits and a walk in 3 2/3 innings. Carluccio came in and tossed the final 1 1/3 innings for a save.

Vs. Montclair State University - Lost 10-1 - Boxscore

The visiting Montclair State University baseball team posted a 10-1 non-conference win over Moravian at Gillespie Field.

The Red Hawks scored twice in the top of the second inning for a 2-0 lead on RBI singles from Kevin Miller and Jay Bionde.  Montclair State added six more runs in the top of the third inning to push the lead to 8-0.   Mickey McGraw had an RBI single while Michael Boggi had a two RBI doubled.  Michael Kaminski added an RBI field’s choice while Scott Evangelist had a two-RBI double in the inning.

The Red Hawks scored their final two runs in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run home run to deep left center field by Boggi.

Moravian scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Freshman outfielder Eric Volpe reached on a fielder’s choice with two outs, stole second base and scored on a pinch hit triple by senior Thomas Czarnecki.

Montclair State had an 11-6 advantage in hits with Boggi going three-for-three with four RBIs.  Bionde added two hits.  Freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci was two-for-three for the Greyhounds.

Moravian used six pitchers in the game with sophomore Luke Skutches taking the loss, allowing eight runs, five of them earned, on eight hits and three walks in three innings of action.  Junior Andrew DeLio tossed two innings, allowing two runs on a hit and three walks with one strikeout out.  Junior Dustin Pflug, senior Thomas Murray, junior Joe Melchionna and junior Brandon Palmisano each tossed an inning for the Greyhounds.

Montclair State had five pitchers in the game with Michael Streaman earning the win, allowing just two hits and striking out three batters in five innings of action.

Vs. United States Merchant Marine Academy - Lost 17-13 - Boxscore

The United States Merchant Marine Academy jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and held on for a 17-13 Landmark Conference win over host Moravian at Gillespie Field in the final game of a three-game Landmark Conference series as the Greyhounds had their four-game conference winning streak. Moravian senior Joseph Durso set the school record for RBIs in a career with five during the game.

The Mariners took that 3-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from outfielder David May and a two-RBI double from first baseman Doug Carter down the left field line.

Moravian responded with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Merchant Marine lead to 3-2.  Freshman catcher Blake Shortall was hit by a pitch, and after a pair of fly outs, Shortall moved to second on a balk.  Sophomore shortstop Jason Huber then reached on an infield single, beating a throw from the shortstop to set up a two-RBI triple by Durso to score Shortall and Huber.

Merchant Marine would get the two runs back in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single from second baseman Travis Christensen, and Christensen scoring on a Moravian error.  The Mariners tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 7-2 lead.  Designated hitter Mike Bybee led off the inning with a single before May hit a two-run homer down the right field line, his first home run of the season.

The Greyhounds answered with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to pull within 7-5.  Shortall led off with a single and scored on an RBI double from senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino o deep right centerfield.  After an out, Huber reached on another infield single to put Gambrino on third.  Durso then hit an RBI ground out to score Gambrino and put Huber in scoring position for an RBI single from freshman designated hitter Kevin O’Keefe.

The Mariners scored five times in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 12-5.  Christensen had an RBI double in the inning while Bybee had an RBI single, May had an RBI bases loaded walk, outfielder Eric Wolfe scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI bases loaded walk by pinch hitter Jared Fassnacht.

Merchant Marine scored once in the top of the seventh inning for a 13-5 lead on an RBI single from Bybee.

Moravian started to close the gap in the bottom of the seventh inning with three runs to cut the Mariners lead to 13-8.  Gambrino and sophomore outfielder Kirk Pastre walked to lead off the inning with Gambrino scoring on an RBI single from Huber.  Eventually, O’Keefe was intentionally walked to load the bases.  Junior outfielder Andrew DeLio was hit by a pitch for an RBI scoring Pastre while sophomore first baseman Jake Schweitzer added an RBI bases loaded walk to score Huber.  However, the Greyhounds would leave the bases loaded in the inning.

Merchant Marine pushed four runs across the plate in the top of the eighth inning to build a 17-8 lead.    Catcher Matt Rigby would score on a Moravian error while shortstop Frank Pierson had a two-RBI single.  Bybee added an RBI single for the Mariners final run of the game.

The Greyhounds pushed five runs home in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the Merchant Marine lead to 17-13.  Gambrino led off with a double and Pastre followed with a single.  After Huber walked, Durso connected on a two-RBI double down the left field line to score Gambrino and Pastre.  The RBIs, Durso’s fourth and fifth of the of the game to make him the first player in Moravian history to reach 100 career RBIs, breaking Bob Frey’s record of 99 set from 2000-2003.  The double was also Durso’s 40th career double, a record he already broke earlier this season.  O’Keefe followed Durso’s record-breaking hit with another two-RBI double to score Huber and Durso.  O’Keefe eventually scored the final run of the game on an RBI ground out from Schweitzer.

Merchant Marine had a 16-13 edge in hits in the game with Bybee going five-for-six.  May was three-for-five for the Mariners while Pierson, Rigby and Christensen each had two hits.  Huber led Moravian at the plate, going four-for-five while Durso, O’Keefe and Gambrino each had two hits.

The Greyhounds used six pitchers in the game with freshman Thomas Fenyak dropping to 4-2 on the year after allowing seven runs, six earned, on eight hits and seven strikeouts.  Junior Joe Melchionna was touched for five runs, three earned, one two hits and a walk while facing six batters in the sixth inning.  Junior Zack Andes tossed two innings in relief, giving up a run on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Junior Andrew DelRossi allowed three runs, two earned on a hit while facing three batters to lead off the seventh inning while junior Brandon Palmisano gave up an unearned run on two hits in an inning of action.  Senior Thomas Murray struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth inning.

Pitcher George Novak earned the win for the Mariners to improve to 3-0 on the year.  He gave up seven runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six-plus innings of action.  Merchant Marine used a total of five pitchers in the game.

The Greyhound swept their first home Landmark Conference doubleheader of the season, defeating The United States Merchant Marine Academy, 8-6, in the second game of a twinbill at Gillespie Field for Moravian's fourth straight conference win.

The Mariners would again strike first, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning.  John Hubach started the scoring on a Moravian error before an RBI triple from senior Davey May.  Doug Carter followed with an RBI single.

Moravian would take the lead with five runs in the bottom half of the third inning.  sophomore shortstop Jason Huber and senior outfielder Joseph Durso drew walks with one out before freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe hit an RBI double to score Huber.  An error on a ball hit by freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci scored Durso while O’Keefe crossed the plate on a Merchant Marine error.  Freshman third baseman Gregg Steinman hit an RBI single to score Bartolacci while senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino had an RBI single to score freshman catcher Austin Rock, who had reached on the error that allowed O’Keefe to score.

The Greyhounds extended their lead to 6-3 with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Huber walked and stole second base.  Durso followed with a walk before double steal put both runners in scoring position.  Bartolacci then hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Huber.

The Mariners chased three runs home in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 6-6.  David Dorfman drew a bases loaded, RBI walk while Frank Pierson had a two-RBI single.

Moravian retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Huber led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Durso.  O’Keefe would draw a walk to load the bases before Bartolacci connected on another RBI sacrifice fly to score Huber.  Durso, who moved to third on Bartolacci’s fly ball, scored on an RBI fielder’s choice off of junior outfielder Brad Bodine’s bat.

The Mariners again had an edge in hits, this time 9-6 with Hubach going two-for-two.  Steinman was two-for-two for the Greyhounds.

Junior Philip Spence earned the win in relief for the Greyhounds, allowing two hits and striking out two batters in 2 2/3 innings to improve to 3-1 on the year.  Junior Ryan Cummings started for Moravian, allowing six runs on seven hits and four walks with six strikeouts.

Merchant Marine used four pitchers in the game with Eric Anderson taking the loss after allowing three runs on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of relief action.

The Mariners struck for a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI ground out by junior Mike Bybee for a 1-0 lead.

Moravian answered in the bottom half of the first inning to tie the game.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea drew a walk and stole second base before moving to third on a ground out by sophomore shortstop Jason Huber.  Senior outfielder Joseph Durso followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Shea.

Merchant Marine would score twice in the top of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead on a two-RBI single from Alex Wolfe that scored John Hubach and Frank Pierson.  The Mariners added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning for a 5-1 lead.  David Dorfman had an RBI single while George Novak scored on a Moravian error.

The Greyhounds answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 5-5.  Durso connected on a solo home run with one out, his second homer of the season, and freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe followed with a triple.  Freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci then hit an RBI single to score O’Keefe before junior outfielder Brad Bodine had an RBI triple, and scored on a Mariner error on the play.

Moravian took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs to build an 8-5 advantage.  Senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino doubled to lead off the inning and scored along with Shea, who had walked, on a two-RBI double from Huber..  Huber eventually scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by sophomore designated hitter Jacob Millen. 

The Greyhounds would add an important insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Gambino drew a two-out walk, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error.  Shea then reached on an error to score Gambrino for a 9-5 Moravian lead.

Merchant Marine would score three times in the top of the seventh inning and left the tying run at second base at the end of the game.  Junior pinch hitter Jeff Schwind scored on a Moravian error before a two-run homer by sophomore first baseman Doug Carter.  The Mariners had a 7-6 edge in hits in the game with Carter going two-for-four.

Freshman pitcher Brandon Close improved to 3-1 on the season for the Greyhounds, allowing seven runs, just two earned, on five hits and a walk while striking out nine batters in six-plus innings of work.  Sophomore Luke Skutches allowed a unearned run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning for Moravian while junior Brandon Palmisano earned his first save of the season after getting the final out of the game.

Merchant Marine used three pitchers as well with Keith Heine taking the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts in four-plus innings of action.

At Muhlenberg College - Lost 18-4 - Boxscore

The Greyhounds fell behind 14-0 including 10-0 after four innings in an 18-4 loss at rival Muhlenberg College at Credarcreek Field. The Mules took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a Moravian error, the first of six Greyhoun errors in the game, an two-RBI single by Eric Hammond and an RBI single from Eric Pomroy.

Muhlenberg added five runs in the bottom of the third inning for a 9-0 lead. The Mules scored on a two-RBI single from Jeff Puklin, an RBI single by Dan Fisher and a two-RBI single from Pomroy. Muhlenberg scored a single run on the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI double by Clint Lynch for a 10-0 lead.

The Mules pushed their lead to 14-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two-RBI single by Christian Conti, an RBI single from Chris Costa and another RBI double by Lynch.

Moravian finally got on the scoreboard with four runs in the top of the eighth inning. Senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino reached on an error to start the inning, and he moved to third on a one-out double by sophomore outfieler Kirk Pastre. Sophomore shortstop Jason Huber then hit an RBI sacrifice fly in foul territory to score Gambrino. Senior outfielder Joseph Durso followed with an RBI sginel to score Pastre, who had moved to third on Huber's fly ball. Senior catcher Michael LaVerghetta then hit an infield single before freshman first baseman/pitcher Kevin O'Keefe had a two-RBI double to score Durso and LaVerghetta.

Muhlenberg answered with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to finish off the scoring. Conti had a two-RBI double while Nick Busillo added a two-RBI single.

The Mules had a 25-10 advantage in hits with Pomroy leading the way with a five-for-six performance with three RBIs. Lynch was three-for-four with three doubles while Hammond was three-for-three and Conti added three hits and four RBIs. Junior outfielder Brad Bodine led Moravian with a two-for-three performance while O'Keefe was two-for-four.

The Greyhounds used four pitchers in the game with junior Philip Spence taking the loss, his first of the season. Spence allowed eight runs, just three earned, on nine hits and two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings. Junior Joe Melchionna gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits with two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings while O'Keefe allowed eight runs, only five were earned, on nine hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings. Junior Andrew DelRossi finished off the game for Moravian, giving up two hits.

At Susquehanna University - Won 12-1 - Boxscore

Moravian continued its hot hitting and high scoring ways with 14 more hits in a 12-1 Landmark Conference victory over Susquehanna University at Bollinger Field. The Greyhounds have now scored 144 runs in 14 games this season, and seven of Moravian’s 14 hits in the game went for extra- bases.  Moravian also has 183 hits on the year with 58 for extra-bases.

Moravian jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and moved to third on a double from sophomore outfielder Jason Huber.  Senior outfielder Joseph Durso followed with a two-RBI double to score Shea and Huber.  Freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe was hit by a pitch, and freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci walked to load the bases.  Durso scored on a wild pitch before an RBI ground out from senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino drove in O’Keefe.

The Greyhounds would add three more runs in the top of the second inning for a 7-0 lead.  Durso got things going with a two-out double, his team leading tenth double of the season and the 39th of his career, a school record Durso already owns.  O’Keefe was hit by a pitch before Bartolacci connected on a two-out, three-run homer to right field, Bartolacci’s second home run of the season.

The Greyhounds made their lead 11-0 with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.  Freshman third baseman Gregg Steinman singled with two outs, and freshman catcher Blake Shortall was hit by a pitch.  Junior outfielder Brad Bodine, who had entered the game as a defensive replacement in the third inning, then hit a two-out, three-run home run to left field.  The homer was Bodine’s second of the season. 

Moravian scored its final run of the contest in the top of the seventh inning.  Durso walked to lead off the inning and O’Keefe singled.  Bartolacci then hit into a fielder’s choice that had O’Keefe out at second base, but a Susquehanna throwing error on an attempted double play, allowed Durso to score.

The Crusaders scored their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Jeff Rezach singled with two outs and scored on an RBI double by Justin Portzline.

Steinman led Moravian at the plate with a three-for-five performance while Huber, Durso and Bodine each had two hits.  Zach Brigman had two of Susquehanna’s six hits in the contest.

Moravian freshman pitcher Thomas Fenyak earned the victory on the mound for the Greyhounds to improve his record to 4-1 on the season.  Fenyak allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out six batters in seven innings of action.  Sophomore Luke Skutches worked a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts while junior Andrew DeLio gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout in an inning of action.

The Greyhounds earned their first Landmark Conference win of the season, shutting out host Susquehanna University, 9-0, in the second game of a doubleheader at Bollinger Field to earn a split of the twinbill.

Freshman pitcher Brendan Close tossed his first collegiate shutout in the game for Moravian, allowing just three hits and a pair of walks while striking out six Crusaders in his first complete game of the year. 

The Greyhounds would give Close all the offense he needed with two runs in the top of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea drew a walk to start the game before senior outfielder Joseph Durso had a one-out infield single.  Freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Shea.  Junior designated hitter Brad Bodine then followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Durso.

Susquehanna took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Tyler Reichard singled with two outs, stole second base and scored on an RBI single from Chris Price.

The Greyhounds would tie the game in the top of the second inning.  Freshman catcher Austin Rock connected on a one-out double and scored on an RBI single by senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino.

The Crusaders retook the lead, 3-1, in the bottom of the third inning with two runs on RBI singles by Reichard and Price.  Susquehanna added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI double by Reichard, and the Crusaders added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI double by Kurt Yannelli and a Moravian error.

Susquehanna had a 7-6 edge in hits in the game with Reichard going three-for-three with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.  Price was two-for-three with two RBIs.  Moravian had six different players with hits in the game.

Moravian junior Ryan Cummings suffered his first loss of the season on the mound, allowing five runs on six hits and a walk with a season high nine strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings of action.  Junior Brandon Palmisano tossed the final 2/3 of an inning, giving up an unearned run on one hit.  John Lunardi went the distance for the Crusaders, allowing a run on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

The Greyhounds opened their 2009 home season with an 11-10, eight-inning non-conference victory over Albright College at Gillespie Field.

The Lions took a 2-0 in the top of the third inning.  Junior first baseman Casey Lawrence and senior third baseman Jason Dunkelberger each had two-out RBI singles in the inning.

Moravian tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the third inning.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea had a one-out single and scored on a two-out RBI double from senior outfielder Joseph Durso, the 36th double of his career, a record Durso already owns.  Freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe followed with an RBI single to score Durso.

Albright retook the lead in the top of the fourth inning.  Junior outfielder Eric Nolan led off the inning with a single and scored on an RBI double by sophomore outfielder Kyle McGee.

The Greyhounds would push seven runs across the plate in the bottom half of the fourth inning to take the lead for good at 9-3.  Senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino drew a walk to lead off the inning before freshman third baseman Gregg Steinman singled.  After a ground out, freshman shortstop Dave Zubia hit an RBI single to tie the game by scoring Gambrino.  Shea then hit an RBI double down the left field line to score Steinman and put Moravian ahead.  Sophomore outfielder Jason Huber had an RBI single to score Zubia before Durso connected on his first homer of the season, a three-run shot to right center.  O’Keefe would keep the Greyhound inning going with a double.  Junior outfielder Brad Bodine and Gambrino walked to load the bases before for Steinman hit an RBI sacrifice fly scoring O’Keefe with the final run of the inning.

The Lions scored three times in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Moravian lead to 9-6.  Sophomore shortstop Patrick Brady and junior pitcher/designated hitter Shane Stein each drew walks to lead off the inning.  Dunkelberger then hit a one-out, three-run home run down the right field line.

Moravian scored again in the bottom half of the fifth inning.  Huber reached on an error with two outs and moved to third on a stolen base and a throwing error.  O’Keefe then hit an RBI single to score Huber.

Albright would get a run in the top of the seventh inning when Brady led off the inning with a walk and scored on an RBI single by Lawrence.

The Greyhounds scored what ended up being the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Durso reached on an error to start the inning.  Sophomore first baseman Jake Schweitzer put down a sacrifice bunt to move Durso to second before an RBI double down the right field line from freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci to score Durso.

The Lions made things close with three runs in the top of the eighth inning.  McGee walked to lead off the inning, and sophomore pinch hitter Justin Danser also drew a walk.  Storms attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt; however the Greyhounds attempted to get McGee at third base.  The throw was dropped and rolled into left field allowing McGee to score.  Sophomore Shawn Walbert came up for Albright and laid down another bunt but reached on a throwing error to load the bases.  Brady would hit into an RBI fielder’s choice scoring Danser before Storms scored on a sacrifice fly by Lawrence.

The umpires call the game prior to the start of the ninth inning due to darkness.

Moravian had a 15-8 advantage in hits with O’Keefe going three-for-four and Shea going three-for-five with two doubles.  Steinman, Huber and Durso each had two hits with Durso becoming the third player in school history to reach 130 career hits. Durso also had four RBIs to move into second in school history with 89 career RBIs.  Dunkelberger and Lawrence each had two hits for the lines and combined to drive in seven of Albright’s ten runs.

The Greyhounds used a planned pitching by committee in the game with five pitchers scheduled to throw in the game, and the squad eventually used seven pitchers.  Junior Philip Spence started on the mound for Moravian and tossed 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hitsl. Sophomore Luke Skutches pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing a run on three hits.   Junior Joe Melchionna pitched an inning allowing three runs on a hit and two walks with one strikeout while freshman Thomas Fenyak tossed a scoreless inning with a strikeout for his third win of the season.  Freshman Brendan Close allowed a run on a hits and two walks while striking out one batter in his inning of work.  Senior Thomas Murray walked the only two batters he faced, allowing a pair of unearned runs while junior Zack Andes gave up an unearned run on a hit and a walk in a third of an inning.  Junior Ryan Cummings tossed the final two-thirds of an inning for Moravian, striking out one batter for his second save of the season.

Albright tossed four pitchers with Stein taking the loss, allowing eight runs on ten hits and two walks with one strikeout in 3 1/3 innings of action.  Sophomore Kevin Thomas gave up two runs, one earned on two hits and three walks in 1 1/3 innings while junior Joe Clark allowed an unearned run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.  Freshman Brandon Wiegand finished off the game for the Lions with a hit and a walk allowed in an inning of action.

Moravian won its final game at the Russmat Tournament in Winter Haven, Florida with a 4-3 victory over Anna Maria (MA) College.

The Greyhounds scored all four of their runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore outfielder Jason Huber singled with one out and moved to second on a single by senior outfielder Joseph Durso. Freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci drew a walk to lead the bases, and freshman catcher Austin Rock followed with another walk for an RBI scoring Huber. Freshman first baseman Kevin O'Keefe then connected on a three-RBI triple to clear the bases.

Anna Maria cut the Moravian lead in half in the bottom of the third inning with two runs. Jeff Kodys led off with a double and scored on an RBI single from Andy Fallon. Fallon eventually scored on an RBI singel from James McNamara.

Anna Marie would get another run in the bottom of the seventh inning before Moravian shut the door. Fallon led off the inning with a single, and he scored on an RBI single by Jeff Scafidi. Each team had eight hits in the game with Huber and O'Keefe each getting two hits for Moravian and JK Vaughn and Fallon each collecting two hits for Anna Maria.

Freshman pitcher Thomas Fenyak improved to 2-1 on the season for Moravian, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in five innings of action. Sophomore Luke Skutches allowed a run on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in one-plus innings of work while senior Thomas Murray had a strikeout and a hit allowed in 1/3 of an inning. Junior Zack Andes struck out the only batter he faced for the Greyhounds while junior Joe Melchionna gave up a hit before recording the final out for his first save of the season.

Pete LaBelle started on the mound for Anna Maria, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of action. Tim Henderson tossed the other 3 1/3 innings with two hits, a walk and three strikeouts.

The Greyhounds dropped the first game of their final doubleheader at the Russmat Tournament in Winter Haven, Florida, falling to Anna Maria (MA) College, 4-3, in eight innings.

Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman catcher Blake Shortall doubled with one out and moved to third on a single from freshman shortstop Dave Zubia. After Zubia stole second base, sophomore outfielder Jason Huber drew a walk to load the bases. After the second out of the inning, senior outfielder Joseph Durso was able to draw an RBI walk to score Shortall.

The Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Shortall led off with a single and stole second base. Zubia added his second hit of the game to move Shortall to third base before senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino had an RBI single to score Shortall.

Anna Maria would tie the game in the top of the seventh inning. Bredon Tivnan led off the inning with a double and scored on a Moravian error on a ball hit by Nick Aromando. Aromando came in to tie the game on an RBI double from Michael Galvin.

Anna Maria then scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Jeff Scafidi singled with one out and scored on an RBI single from Tivnan. Matt Touhey then added an RBI ground out scoring JK Vaughn, who had also singled in the inning.

Moravian would get a run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Greyhounds would leave the tying run at third base and the winning run at second base. Senior Eric Shea came in to pinch hit with two outs and reacrd on an error. Junior outfielder Brad Bodine then reached on another error that moved Shea to second. Freshman pinch hitter Austin Rock was able to reach on the third Anna Maria error of the inning, and the over throw allowed Shea to score.

Anna Maria had an 8-5 edge in hits with Galvin, Scafidi, Vaughn and Tivnan each collecting two hits. Shortall and Zubia were each two-for-three for the Greyhounds.

Freshman Brendan Close suffered the loss for Moravian, allowing four runs, just two earned, on seven hits and a walk while striking out ten batters in 7 1/3 innings. Junior Philip Spence finished off the game for the Greyhounds with a hit and a strikeout in 2/3 of an inning. James McNamara went the distance for Anna Maria, allowing three runs, just two earned, on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Moravian had its five-game winning streak snapped in a 19-8 loss to Clark (MA) University in the second game of a doubleheader at the Russmat Tournament in Winter Haven, Florida. Clark jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning ona two-RBi triple by Matthew Tillo.

The Greyhounds would cut the lead in half to 2-1 in the top of the third inning. Freshman shortstop Dave Zubia led off the inning with a single and stole second. After moving to third base on an error, Zubia scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder Jason Huber.

Clark would extend its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning with three more runs. Peter Lewis delivered a two-RBI double in the inning and then scored on a Moravian throwing error after stealing third base.

Moravian answered with two runs un the top of the fifth inning to close within 5-3. Freshman catcher Austin Rock drew a one-out walk and junior outfielder Brad Bodine had a single with both runners moving into scoring position on the throw. Freshman third baseman Gregg Steinman hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Rock while Bodine crossed the plate on an RBI infield single by sophomore first baseman Jake Schweitzer.

Clark would push five runs across the plate in the bottom half of the fifth inning to take a 10-3 lead. Phillip DiMarco and Lewis had RBI singles. Joseph Krahe would score on a passed ball while Brendan Solecki and Lewis each scored on balks.

The Greyhounds would get two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull within 10-5. Zubia led off with a walk and Huber reached on an error. Two batters later, Rock connected on a two-RBI double.

Moravian scored three times in the top of the seventh to close the gap to 10-8, and the Greyhounds had the tying run on second base when the final out was recorded. Schweitzer drew a one-out walk, and sophomore designated hitter Jacob Millen added a hit. Zubia singled to load the bases, and sophomroe Kirk Pastre came into run for Millen. Huber was hit with the bases loaded to pick up an RBI scoring Schweitzer then Gamrbino was hit by a pitch for an RBI scoring Pastre. Zubia crossed the plate on a balk but Moravian would not get another run in.

The Greyhounds had an 11-9 advantage in hit; however, the Greyhounds left 11 runners on base including the bases loeaded in the fourth inning. Schweitzer, Zubia and Durso each had two hits in the game for the Greyhounds. Durso is now third in school history with 128 career hits. Lewis, DiMarco and Scott Hollingsworth each had two hits for Clark.

Freshman Kevin O'Keefe suffered the loss on the mound for the Greyhounds in his first outing of the season. O'Keefe allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings of action. Brandon Palmisano gave up four runs, three earned, on two hits and a walk with one strikeout in an inning of action while junior Joe Melchionna allowed a run on a hit with two strikeouts in 2/3 of an inning. Sophomore Luke Skutches tossed the final inning for Moravian with one hit and one strikeout.

Clark used three pitchers with Nickolas Winchell earning the win while allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits and four walks with three strikeouts in five innings of action.

The Greyhounds extended their winning streak to five straight games with a 15-2 non-conference victory over Clark (MA) University in the first game of a doubleheader at the Russmat Tournament in Winter Haven, Florida. Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore outfielder Jason Huber drew a walk to lead off the inning and scored on a one-out RBI double by senior outfielder Joseph Durso.

Clark tied the game in the top of the third inning with Peter Lewis leading off the inning with a double and scoring on an RBI ground out by Kevin Kopec.

The bottom half of the third inning saw one school record broke as Moravian scored 11 times in the inning and another tied. Huber led off the with a single and stole second base. Senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Durso then connected on another RBI double scoring Huber. The double was the 34th of Durso's career, tying Pete Moore's school record. Freshman designated hitter Kevin O'Keefe drew a walk to load the bases before an RBI single from junior outfielder Brad Bodine scored Gambrino. Sophomore first baseman Jake Schweitzer then hit a two-RBI double to score Durso and O'Keefe. Freshman catcher Blake Shortall drew a walk to load the bases again before sophomore third baseman Jon Baltz cleared them with a three-RBI triple. Freshman shortstop Dave Zubia and Huber were both hit by pitches to load the bases again. Gambrino connected on a fly ball to left field that was dropped allowing Baltz and Zubia to score. Huber would cross the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly by Durso, the first out of the inning. O'Keefe drove in Gambrino with the final run of the inning with an RBI infield single.

The Greyhounds added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 15-1 lead. Baltz hit a one-double before junior infielder Mike Zubia came into pinch run. Dave Zubia was hit by a pitch and Gambrino would walk to load the bases. Durso then delivered his third double of the game, this one driving in three runs and setting a new school career record with 35 doubles. The hit also moved Durso into a tie for third in school history with 126.

Clark scored its final run in the top of the sixth inning on a double from Mitchell DeLorenzo and an RBI triple by Phillip DiMarco. Clark finished with eight hits in the game with DeLorenzo going three-for-three and Brendan Solecki addeing two hits.

Despite scoring 15 runs, Moravian had just 12 hits in the game but half of them were doubles, and the Greyhounds drew five walks and had three hit batters. Durso was three-for-three in the contest with the six RBIs while Schweitzer was three-for-four. Baltz added two hits.

Junior Ryan Cummings earned his first victory of the season on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing a run on five hits while striking out eight batters in five innings of action. Junior Zack Andes tossed an inning with two hits and a run while junior Andrew DeLio allowed a hit in one inning of action. Matthew Tillio was one of three Clark pitchers, and he suffered the loss after allowing 11 runs, eight earned, on eight hits and four walks with one strikeout in two-plus innings of work.

Moravian swept its first doubleheader of the season and extended its winning streak to four straight games with a 9-2 victory over St. Vincent College in the second game of a twinbill at the Russmat Tournament. The Greyhounds would start the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the third inning, the fourth time this season that Moravian scored first in a game. Freshman shortstop Dave Zubia singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore outfielder Jason Huber followed with an RBI single before stealing second base and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino then hit an RBI double to score Huber while senior outfielder Joseph Durso followed with an RBI triple to score Gambrino. Freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci finished off the scoring in the inning with an RBI ground out that chased Durso home.

St. Vincent would get a run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Zack Galasso. Moravian would answer in the bottom half of the inning on a solo home run by junior outfielder Brad Bodine to lead off the inning.

St. Vincent scored again in the top of the sixth inning on another RBI single by Galasso. Galasso was three-for-three in the game as St. Vincent out-hit Moravian, 9-8.

The Greyhounds finished off the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman pinch hitter/first baseman Kevin O'Keefe with one out and stop second base. Freshman cathcer Blake Shortall then reached on an error, and freshman shortstop Dave Zubia drew a walk to load the bases. Huber would clear the bases with a three-RBI double and then score on an RBI ground out by Gambrino. Huber and Gambrino were each two-for-four in the game for Moravian.

Freshman pitcher Thomas Fenyak went the distance on the mound for the Greyhounds to improve to 1-1 on the year.  He allowed two runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in the complete game. The Greyhounds ran their winning streak to three straight games with a 16-3 non-conference victory over St. Vincent College in the first game of a doubleheader at the Russmat Tournament. Moravian jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci drove in sophomore outfielder Jason Huber, who had walked to lead off the game, with an RBI single. Freshman first baseman Kevin O'Keefe would drive in the other two runs with a two-RBI triple later in the inning that scored senior outfielder Joseph Durso, who had also walked, and Bartolacci.

St. Vincent would cut the Moravian lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning on a two-RBI single by Ryan Joseph with the bases loaded.

The Greyhounds added two runs in the top of the third inning to extend their lead to 5-2. Freshman catcher Austin Rock had an RBI single to score senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino, who had reached on a one-out single. Freshman shortstop Dave Zubia would drive in Rock with an RBI double.

Moravian would put the game out of reach in the top of the fourth inning with four more runs to push the lead to 9-2. O'Keefe delivered a two-out, three-run homer to score sophomore outfielder Kirk Pastre and Durso. Durso had reached on a double which was the 32nd of his career. Rock followed O'Keefe's home run with a solo shot of his own.

The Greyhounds scored five times in the top of the fifth inning to extend the advantage to 14-2. It marked the third straight game that Moravian had reached double figures in runs scored. Dave Zubia singled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI single by Bodone. Sophomore pinch hitter Jacob Millen hit an RBI double to score Bodine while junior pinch hitter Mike Zubia had an RBI double that scored Durso. Millen and Mike Zubia crossed the plate on an error by St. Vincent on a ball hit by Rock.

St. Vincent scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI double by Kenny Primeaux while Moravian added single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth inning, David Zubia scored on an infield RBI single by Bodine while Mike Zubia doubled in the seventh inning and scored on an error by St. Vincent on a single hit by O'Keefe.

Moravian had 19 hits in the game with O'Keefe going four-for-five with five RBIs and Dave Zubia going three-for-three with a pair of runs scored. Mike Zubia, Bodine and Rock each had two hits.

Junior Philip Spence improved to 2-0 on the mound for the Greyhounds this spring, allowing just three runs on six hits and five walks with eight strikeouts in six innings of action. Junior Andrew DeLio tossed the final inning, facing just three batters including a double play to end the contest.

The Greyhounds began their 2009 spring break trip with a 21-10 victory over Johnson & Wales (RI) University at the Russmat Tournament in Winter Haven, Florida. Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore outfielder Jason Huber drew a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Freshman designated hitter Austin Rock drove in Huber with an RBI single.

Moravian extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the third inning when freshman catcher Blake Shortall drew a walk, moved to third after an error on an infield single by freshman shortstop Dave Zubia. Senior outfielder Eric Shea drove in Shortall with an RBI ground out.

The Greyhounds made the score 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman third baseman Gregg Steinman singled with one out, and sophomore first baseman Jake Schweitzer drew a walk. Shortall singled to load the bases before Zubia hit an RBI single scoring Steinman.

Moravian doubled its lead to 6-0 in the top of the fifth inning. Huber led off with a double before senior outfielder Joseph Durso was hit by a pitch. A passed ball moved the runners up before Huber scored on an RBI single by senior second baseman Kevin Gamrbino. Steinman followed with an RBI single to score Durso before Schweitzer drove in Gambrino with a sacrifice fly.

The Greyhounds added five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 11-0 lead. Zubia led off with a double and Shea was hit by a pitch. Huber would load the bases with a walk before Durso drew a walk to get an RBI and score Zubia. After two outs, sophomore third baseman Jon Baltz walked with the bases loaded for an RBI and scoring Shea. Freshman first baseman Kevin O'Keefe hit a two-RBI single to score Huber and Durso before Zubia came back to the plate and drew another bases loaded walk for an RBI with Baltz scoring.

Johnson & Wales scored its first run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Matt Yaeger drew a walk to lead off the inning, breaking up a perfect game by Moravian freshman pitcher Brendan Close. Two batters later, Joe Coppola broke up the no-hitter with an RBI single to score Yaeger.

Johnson & Wales would added four more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull within 11-5. The first run scored on a wild pitch, and then Yaeger hit an RBI sacrifice fly. Teddy Katz had an RBI single while Nick Alonsco delivered an RBI double.

Moravian added two runs in the top of the eighth inning to push the lead to 13-5. Zubia singled with two outs and scored on an RBI double by Shea. Junior outfielder Brad Bodine followed with an RBI single to score Shea.

Johnson & Wales pulled to within 13-10 with five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cory Ryan drove in a run while reaching on an error while Katz had an RBI single. Eric Rapuano hit a three-run homer in hits first at-bat of the game.

The Greyhounds put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth inning with eight runs. Freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci led off with a solo home run. Three batters later, O'Keefe connected on a three-run homer scofing Gambrino and Baltz. Later in the ining, Bodine, Gambrino and Baltz all had RBI singles while Bartolacci had an RBI sacrifice fly.

Moravian had a 22-9 advantage in hits in the game with Zubia going five-for-five. Bodine was three-for-three off of the bench for the Greyhounds while Gambrino had three hits. Steinman and O'Keefe each added two hits for Moravian. Katz was the only Johnston & Wales player with multiple hits.

Close earned his first victory for the Greyhounds while tying the school record with 13 strikeouts in six innings of action. He did allow a run on a hit and two walks. Senior Thomas Murray pitched an inning for Moravian, allowing four runs on four hits with a strikeout while junior Joe Melchionna gave up five unearned runs on three hits in 2/3 of an inning. Junior Andrew DelRossi allowed a hit and two walks while facing three batters before junior Ryan Cummings came in to earn his first save of the season. Cummings tossed 1 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.

Johnson & Wales also used five pitchers in the game with Jeff Jordan taking the loss after allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits and four walks. He did strike out three batters in five innings of action.

Moravian had an early two-run lead slip away for the second straight day as the Greyhounds fell to host Hampden-Sydney College, 10-6, in the second day of the Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament. Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea led off with a single and stole second base before scoring on an RBI single from freshman catcher Joe Bartolacci.

The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning.  Freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe and freshman third baseman Gregg Steinman led off with back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by senior designated hitter Thomas Czarnecki.  O’Keefe scored on an RBI ground out from freshman shortstop Dave Zubia.

Hampden-Sydney took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Luke Swiney had a two-RBI double in the inning while Herbie Williams added an RBI triple.

Moravian scored twice in the top of the third inning to tie the contest at 4-4.  Sophomore outfielder Jason Huber led off with a single and moved to third on a double from senior outfielder Joseph Durso, the 30th of his career.  Bartolacci followed with a two-RBI triple.

The Greyhounds retook the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Huber led off with a single and moved to second on a balk.  Durso then drew a walk.  Huber scored on an RBI single by senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino, and Gambrino eventually scored on an RBI double from O’Keefe.

Hampden-Sydney came right back in the bottom half of the fifth inning to knot the score at 6-6 on an RBI double by Williams and an RBI single from A.J. Prill.  Hampden-Sydney would push four runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 10-6 lead.  Williams drove in two runs with a triple, and he scored on an RBI single from Prill.  Evan Rogers drove in the final run of the game with an RBI single.

Moravian had 15 hits in the contest with Shea going three-for-five in the leadoff spot.  Bartolacci, Huber and O’Keefe each had two hits for the Greyhounds.  Hampden-Sydney had 13 hits in the contest with Williams going four-for-five in the leadoff position.

Freshman pitcher Brendan Close made his first collegiate start for the Greyhounds, allowed six runs, four of them earned, on seven hits with eight strikeouts in four innings of action.  Junior Joe Melchionna suffer the loss for Moravian, giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings of action.  Senior Thomas Murray tossed 1 1/3 innings with a hit, two walks and a strikeout for the Greyhounds while sophomore Luke Skutches had two walks in an inning of action.

Will Wiseman earned the victory in relief for Hampden-Sydney, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out six batters in 4 1/3 innings.  Daniel Ryan started the game, giving up six runs on ten hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Vs. Rutgers-Camden at Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament at Hampden-Sydney, VA - Lost 9-4 - Boxscore

The Greyhounds opened their 2009 season with a 9-4 loss to Rutgers-Camden in the first game at the Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament being hosted by Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia.  Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when freshman designated hitter Austin Rock hit a two-run homer in his first collegiate at-bat that scored sophomore right fielder Jason Huber, who had walked. 

The Scarlet Raptors would score in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Greg Hunt.  The Raptors would then score twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead when Scott Fruits hit an RBI triple to score Steve Myers.  Two batters later, Tom Clarke singled in Fruits with the go ahead run. 

Moravian retook the lead in the top of the seventh with an RBI double from Huber scoring senior center fielder Eric Shea, who had led off the inning with a single. Huber eventually crossed the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly by freshman first baseman Kevin O'Keefe.

Rutgers-Camden added four runs in the bottom of the seventh including a game-winning single by Myers and two in the eighth for a 9-4 lead. 

Moravian had 12 hits in the game with three by senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino.  Shea, Huber and senior left fielder Joseph Durso each had two hits for the Greyhounds while Rutgers-Camden had 14 hits in this contest including a three-for-four performance by Myers. 

Freshman Thomas Fenyak, who made his first collegiate start for Moravian, suffered the loss allowing seven runs on ten hits and no walks with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.  Junior Ryan Cummings finished the contest on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks in 1 2/3 innings of action.  Brandon Large earned the victory for Rutgers-Camden with one inning of relief action.
