Vs. The University of Scranton in 2011 Landmark Conference Tournament - Lost 7-3 - Boxscore

            The second seeded University of Scranton jumped out to an early lead and posted a 7-3 victory over top seed and host Moravian College in the final elimination game of the 2011 Landmark Conference Championship Tournament at Gillespie Field Sunday afternoon.
            With the victory, the Royals will face third seed The Catholic University of America in the championship round on Monday at 12:30 p.m.  Scranton will need two wins to earn the Landmark Conference’s automatic berth to the 2011 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament while Catholic needs just one victory. 
            The Greyhounds, who were regionally ranked last week, will need to wait until the NCAA selection show next weekend to see if there season continues.  Moravian, which dropped back-to-back games Sunday for the first time this season after winning 15 straight, falls to 31-9 with the loss, a school record for victories.
            Scranton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when senior outfielder Chris Stallone and sophomore third baseman Richard Pohl drew walks to start the stanza, and Stallone scored from second on a throwing error on an attempted double play.
            Moravian would threaten in the top of the second when senior outfielder Mike Zubia, pictured at top right, walked to leadoff and moved to third on a one-out single by senior third baseman Jon Baltz but a double play by Scranton ended the inning.
            The Royals put a runner in scoring position in the bottom half of the second when junior designated hitter Jesse Outhouse doubled with one out; however, he was stranded at third.
            Stallone singled to start the bottom of the third for Scranton and senior catcher Jeff Manahan singled with one out before Moravian retired the final two outs.
            Scranton extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of runs.  Sophomore outfielder Michael Gaeta led off with a triple, and he scored on an RBI double by Outhouse.  After a sacrifice bunt from junior second baseman Matt Rayha, Outhouse scored on an RBI ground out by sophomore shortstop Tim LeCompte. 
            In the bottom of the fifth, Pohl led off with a single, and was sacrificed to second by Manahan.  Senior first baseman David Giglio hit a single to move Pohl to third before a pitching change for the Greyhounds.  Senior outfielder Jason Lane then connected on an RBI single to score Pohl and extend the Royals’ lead to 4-0.  Outhouse hit an infield single with two outs to load the bases but the Greyhounds made the final out to keep any more runs from scoring.
            With one out in the top of the sixth, Moravian junior shortstop Dave Zubia, pictured at left, connected on a single, his 100th career hit, the 20th player in school history and third this season to reach 100 career hits.  Sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore followed with a walk, and a wild pitch put the runners at second and third with two outs but Scranton would get out of the inning without allowing a run.
            In the bottom of the sixth, Stallone connected on a one-out double and scored on a two-out RBI double from Manahan while Giglio had an RBI single that brought in Manahan and made the Scranton lead 6-0.
            Moravian would get on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to cut the Royals’ lead to 6-2.  Baltz reached on an error with one out, and junior first baseman Greg Steinman walked.  Junior catcher Blake Shortall singled to load the bases before freshman pinch hitter Joshua Barfield hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Baltz.  Dave Zubia would follow with an RBI double to score Steinman.  However, Scranton would get the final out to end Moravian’s rally.
            LeCompte led off the bottom of the eighth with a double off the top of the fence in left centerfield, and Stallone sacrificed him to third.  LeCompte would score on an RBI fielder’s choice hit by Manahan to make it 7-2, but the Royals left the bases loaded.
            In the top of the ninth, senior pinch hitter Matthew Kensecki hit a two-out, solo homer to right field, his second home run of the season.
            The Royals had a 15-8 advantage in hits with Outhouse going three-for-four with an RBI.  Giglio was three-for-five with an RBI while Stallone was two-for-three with two RBIs.  Manahan and Lane were both two-for-five with Manahan adding two RBIs and Lane driving in one.  Shortall, pictured at right, and Mike Zubia were two-for-three to lead Moravian while Dave Zubia went two-for-four with an RBI.
            Junior Corey Gorman earned the win on the mound for Scranton, allowing two unearned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out eight batters in seven innings of action.  Freshman Christopher Rom finished the game with a run on two hits to go with four strikeouts in two innings of work.
            Greyhound freshman pitcher Jonathan Harasin took the loss after giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of action.  Junior Kyle Longernecker tossed the final 3 2/3 innings with three runs on eight hits to go with four strikeouts.

Vs. The Catholic University of America in 2011 Landmark Conference Tournament - Lost 8-6 - Boxscore

            The third seeded Catholic University of America baseball team posted an 8-6 victory over top seed and host Moravian College in the winner’s bracket game of the 2011 Landmark Conference Championship Tournament at Gillespie Field Sunday afternoon.
            With the win, the Cardinals move into the championship round of the tournament on Monday at 12:30 p.m. needing just one win for the program’s third Landmark Conference Championship.  The Greyhounds, who had their 15-game winning streak snapped, will play second seed The University of Scranton in the final elimination game of the tournament at approximately 4:45 p.m.
            Moravian had not lost a game since falling to Elizabethtown College on April 6th, and the Greyhounds had not lost to a Landmark Conference opponent at Gillespie Field since March 28, 2010, a span of 19 straight Landmark wins.
            Catholic had the first scoring chance in the game in the top of the third inning.  Junior second baseman Tim Mierzwa walked with an out and reached second base before Moravian recorded the final out of the inning.
            Moravian also mounted its first scoring threat in the third inning with junior Dave Zubia being hit by a pitch and senior outfielder Jason Huber, pictured at right, hitting a single through the left side with two outs.  After a passed ball moved the runners to second and third, junior catcher Austin Rock drew a walk to load the bases before Catholic ended the threat.
            In the Cardinals fourth, junior first baseman Dave Grear reached on an error with one out and freshman third baseman Marc Hanna followed with a single but the Greyhounds would turn their second double play of the game to get out of the inning.
            Catholic jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning.  Mierzwa walked with two outs and stole second base.  Senior shortstop LJ Travaglia also walked and a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third.  An error on a ground ball hit by junior outfielder Dan Sullivan allowed Mierzwa and Travaglia to score.
            Sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore, pictured at left, led off Moravian’s half of the fifth inning with a triple to right centerfield.  Dave Zubia followed with an RBI single to center, and he moved to second on a ground out.  After another out, senior outfielder Mike Zubia tied the game with an RBI double to right centerfield to score Dave Zubia. 
            In the top of the sixth, Hanna led off with a single and freshman outfielder Brendan Breslin followed with a single before a passed ball moved the runners to second and third.  Sophomore catcher Mark Kalokitis connected on a one-out, two-RBI single up the middle to score Hanna and Breslin and give Catholic a 4-2 lead. 
            Junior first baseman Gregg Steinman started the bottom of the sixth with a double for the Greyhounds, but he would be stranded at third at the end of the inning.
            Catholic added a pair of runs to its lead in the top of the eighth inning to move ahead, 6-2.  Sophomore designated hitter Chris McCloud led off a with a single and stole second base, and Kalokitis singled.  Mierzwa put down an RBI sacrifice bunt to score McCloud.  After an out, Sullivan walked and junior outfielder Matt Grieb hit an RBI single to score Kalokitis. 
            Moravian would get the two runs back in the bottom half of the eighth to pull within 6-4.  Senior designated hitter Jacob Millen and senior third baseman Jon Baltz drew back-to-back walks to start the inning.  After a pitching change, Steinman was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Millen scored on an RBI ground out from senior pinch hitter Matthew Kensecki, while Del Priore followed with another RBI single to push Baltz across the plate.  Steinman would be left at third.
            The Cardinals would score twice in the top of the ninth inning to push their lead back to four runs at 8-4.  Breslin hit a one-out single, and McCloud followed with another single.  Senior AJ Ventura came in to run for McCloud.  Kalokitis was hit by a pitch to load the cases for the Cardinals before Breslin scored on a wild pitch.  Ventura would cross the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly off of Mierzwa’s bat. 
            Rock started the bottom of the ninth for the Greyhounds with a single, and Mike Zubia, pictured at right, followed with another single.  Millen reached on a fielder’s choice that loaded the bases for Moravian before Baltz hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Rock.  Steinman singled to right field but Mike Zubia was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning.  Freshman pinch runner Joseph Connell scored on an RBI single by freshman pinch hitter Matthew Gutkes.  Catholic would end the Greyhound rally.
            Moravian had a 13-12 edge in hits with Mike Zubia going three-for-five with an RBI.  Dave Zubia and Steinman were both two-for-four for the Greyhounds while Del Priore was two-for-five.  Breslin led Catholic with a three-for-five performance with two runs.  Kalokitis was two-for-four for the Cardinals while Hanna and McCloud were each two-for-five. 
            Senior Ron Esposito earned the win on the mound for Catholic, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. 
            Sophomore Thomas Fenyak took the loss for the Greyhounds, allowing four runs, only one earned, on six hits and four walks to go with a strikeout in 5 2/3 innings.

Vs. Susquehanna University in 2011 Landmark Conference Tournament - Won 5-3 - Boxscore

            The top seed and host Moravian College opened the 2011 Landmark Conference baseball tournament with a 5-3 win over fourth seed Susquehanna University at Gillepsie Field Saturday afternoon.
            The Greyhounds, who have won 15 straight, move into the winner’s bracket game at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday versus third seed The Catholic University of America, which defeated second seed The University of Scranton, 6-5, in the other first round game, while the Crusaders will play in the first elimination game at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
            Susquehanna jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Freshman outfielder Ty Raubenstine led off the game with a single, and senior second baseman Justin Portzline followed with a bunt single.  Later in the inning, sophomore designated hitter Nick Ferlise hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Raubenstine.
            Moravian, which has won 19 straight games versus Landmark Conference opponents at Gillespie Field, answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Junior shortstop Dave Zubia, pictured at right, walked to start the inning, and senior outfielder Jason Huber reached on a fielder’s choice.  After an out, senior outfielder Mike Zubia hit an RBI single to score Dave Zubia, and then senior third baseman Jon Baltz connected on an RBI single to score Huber.  Mike Zubia scored on a throwing error by the Crusaders.
            The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 4-1 with a run in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore singled and scored on an error on a ground ball hit by Huber.
            Susquehanna would score a run in the top of the fourth inning when sophomore third baseman Dan Wing hit a one-out solo homer.
            The Crusaders pulled within a run in the top half of the eighth on a solo home run by Ferlise with two outs.
            Moravian added an insurance run on the bottom of the eighth when Del Priore doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by Huber.
            The Greyhounds had a 10-9 edge in hits with Huber going three-for-five with two RBIs and a run scored.  Del Priore was two-for-four and scored twice while Baltz was two-for-three.  For Susquehanna, Ferlise was two-for-three with two RBIs while freshman outfielder Ben Anderson was two-for-four.
            Moravian junior Brendan Close remained undefeated on the mound at 10-0 after allowing three runs on nine hits to go with nine strikeouts.  Close, who now has 100 strikeouts on the seasons, the first pitcher in school history to reach 100 strikeouts in one year, did not allow a walk for the sixth time this season. Close also became the third pitcher in school history to record 200 innings pitched, now with 202.1 innings in his career.
            Senior Keith Needham took the loss for Susquehanna, giving up five runs, three earned, on five hits and four walks to go with three strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.  Freshman Matt Smith tossed the final 1/3 of an inning.

At The Catholic University of America - Won 7-5 (10 innings) - Boxscore

            The Moravian College baseball team closed out its regular season with a 7-5, 10-inning win at The Catholic University of America Sunday afternoon to win its 14th straight game and reach the 30-win plateau for the first time in school history.
            The Greyhounds, now 30-7 this season, will host the 2011 Landmark Conference Tournament at Gillespie Field beginning on Saturday, May 7th with Moravian taking on fourth seed Susquehanna University at 12:30 p.m. in the first game of the tournament.
            The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Catcher Chris McCloud started the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly while outfielder Tommy Bowles hit an RBI single.  Third baseman Troy Langway also had an RBI single for Catholic while the final two Cardinal runs scored on Moravian errors.
            Neither team would score until the top of the eighth inning when the Greyhounds scored five times to tie the contest.  Senior designated hitter Matt Kensecki led off with a single and scored on an error while freshman second baseman Edwin Balcarcel had an RBI grounder to score freshman first baseman Joshua Barfield.  Freshman outfielder Joseph Connell, pictured at top right, had an RBI bases loaded walk while freshman catcher Matthew Gutkes tied the game with a two-RBI single scoring Balcarcel and senior outfielder Jacob Millen.
            The Greyhounds would score twice in the top of the tenth inning to break the 5-5 tie.  Connell singled with one out and Gutkes followed with a two-run homer, his first collegiate home run.
            Each team had eight hits in the game with Gutkes going two-for-three with four RBIs.  First baseman Dave Grear and catcher Mark Kalokitis were each two-for-two for Catholic while designated hitter AJ Ventura was two-for-four.
            Freshman Tommy Mariano earned his first collegiate win of the season in relief for Moravian, allowing a hit and striking out three batters in three innings of action.  Junior Kyle Longernecker, pictured at left, earned his ninth save the season, giving up two hits and striking out one batter in an inning of work.  Freshman Jason Jamula started on the mound for the Greyhounds and allowed five runs, three earned, on three hits and three walks in an inning of action.  Freshman Christopher Soltys pitched five innings and gave up two hits and striking out three batters.
            Catholic used eight pitchers in the game with Adam Schroth taking the loss after allowing two runs on four hits and one walk to go with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings of action.

At The Catholic University of America - Won 3-2 (9 innings) & Won 8-7 - Game #1 Boxscore & Game #2 Boxscore

            The Moravian College baseball team swept a Landmark Conference doubleheader at The Catholic University of America, 3-2 in nine innings and 8-7, Saturday to extend its winning streak to 13 games and clinch the top seed in the 2011 Landmark Conference Tournament that begins on Saturday, May 7th.
            In the opening game, the Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Jason Huber, pictured at right, hit a one-out single and scored later in the inning with two outs after senior outfielder Mike Zubia was hit by a pitch.
            The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when designated hitter Chris McCloud doubled with one out and scored on an RBI single by catcher Mark Kalokitis.  The run was the first off of Moravian junior pitcher Brendan Close in conference action since April 2nd.
            Moravian retook the lead in the top of the seventh inning when freshman second baseman Edwin Balcarcel reached on an error.  Freshman Joseph Connell came into run for Balcarcel and Connell scored on an RBI single by sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore. 
            Catholic tied the game in the bottom half of the seventh to force extra innings on an RBI single from shortstop LJ Travaglia.
            The Greyhounds would retake the lead, 3-2, on a solo homer by Huber with two outs in the top of the ninth.  It was Huber’s fourth homer of the season and third solo home run in two games this week.
            Moravian had an 11-9 edge in hits in the game with Huber going three-for-five with two runs and an RBI.  Senior third baseman Jon Baltz was two-for-four while junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe went two-for-five.  Travaglia was three-for-five to lead Catholic while Kaokitis was two-for-four.
            For the first time this season, Close did not earn a decision in a game he started on the mound for the Greyhounds as he allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of action.  Junior Kyle Longernecker, pictured at left, earned his second win of the season for Moravian in relief, allowing a hit and striking out two batters in 2 1/3 innings.  The Cardinals used three pitchers with Marc Hanna taking the loss with two innings of relief work.
            In the second contest, Catholic took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a solo homer from outfielder Brendan Breslin.
            Moravian would score three times in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead.  Junior catcher Austin Rock hit a two-RBI single to score Zubia and O’Keefe while senior designated hitter Jacob Millen scored on an RBI single from Baltz.
            The Cardinals answered with three runs on the bottom half of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.  Breslin drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI doubles while first baseman Dave Greer connected on a two-run home run to put Catholic back in front.
            A three-run fifth inning would give the Cardinals a 7-3 lead after RBI singles from McCloud and Kalokitis and an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of outfielder Matt Grieb.
            The Greyhounds answered with five runs in the top of the sixth inning for an 8-7 advantage.  Junior designated hitter Gregg Steinman led off with a walk before Rock, pictured at right, connected on a two-run homer, his first home run of the season.  Del Priore would hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Balcarcel before O’Keefe put Moravian back in front with a two-RBI single to score Huber and freshman shortstop Daniel Seitzinger.
            Catholic had a 10-9 edge in hits in the second game with Breslin going two-for-two with two RBIs and a pair of runs.  Second baseman Tim Mierzwa was two-for-three for the Cardinals.  Rock led the Greyhounds with a three-for-three performance to go with four RBIs while Huber was two-for-three, and he stole a base to become the first player in school history with 50 career stolen bases.
            Freshman Benjamin Hammel earned his first collegiate win for the Greyhounds, allowing two hits and striking out two batters in two innings of action.  Freshman Jonathan Harasin started on the mound for the Greyhounds, giving up seven runs on eight hits and two walks to go with a strikeout in 4 2/3 innings of action, and freshman Evan Bray walked the only batter he faced in the game.
            The Cardinals used five pitchers in the second game with Thomas Travaglia taking the loss after giving up a pair of unearned runs in a third of an inning.

Vs. FDU-Florham - Cancelled

            The Moravian College baseball team has had to cancel its final non-conference home game of the 2011 season versus FDU-Florham on Thursday, April 28th due to FDU-Florham needing to rescheduled a Freedom Conference game. The contest will not be rescheduled this season.

Vs. DeSales University at Limeport Stadium - Won 5-3 - Boxscore

            The Moravian College baseball team rallied from a 3-0 deficit with four runs in the sixth inning to post a 5-3 non-conference win over DeSales University at Limeport Stadium Tuesday night as the Greyhounds won their 11th straight game and their school record 27th contest of the season.
            The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning.  Junior second baseman Kenny Ridge led off with a walk and scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by junior third baseman Jack Kavetski.  Kavetski scored on an RBI single from senior catcher Doc Neiman while sophomore designated hitter Brian Mauro scored on an RBI single off the bat of senior outfielder Ronnie Wentz.
            The Greyhounds would get a run back in the bottom half of the third on a two-out, solo homer by senior outfielder Jason Huber, pictured at right, his second home run of the season. The hit was the 150th of Huber's career, the fourth player in school history to reach 150 career hits.
            Moravian would score four times in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead.  Huber led off the inning with another solo home run down the left field line.  Junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe followed with a singled and moved to second on an error before an RBI double by senior outfielder Mike Zubia.  After a ground out moved Zubia to third, he scored the go ahead run on an RBI single by senior third baseman Jon Baltz.  Baltz crossed the plate with the final run of the game on an RBI single by sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore.
            Both teams had eight hits in the contest.  Huber was two-for-four for Moravian with two RBIs, two runs and two homers while Baltz, pictured at left, was two-for-four. O'Keefe added ten putouts to break the single season school record with 286 putouts this season.  Wentz led DeSales with a three-for-four performance. 
            Sophomore Robert Solano improved to 3-1 on the season, allowing three runs, just one earned, on seven hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts in eight innings of action.  Junior Kyle Longernecker earned his eighth save of the season, giving up a hit and striking out one in the final inning.
            The Bulldogs used four pitchers with sophomore Colby Pacillo taking the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and a walk to go with four strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of action.

At Drew University - Won 5-1 - Boxscore

            The Moravian College baseball team finished off a three-game Landmark Conference series at Drew University with a 5-1 victory in the final game Monday afternoon as the Greyhounds tied the school record, set a year ago, with their 26th win of the season.
            Moravian extended its winning streak to a season high ten games, and the Greyhounds swept their third straight Landmark Conference series to move a win away with three games remaining from clinching the top seed in the 2011 Landmark Conference Tournament beginning on May 7th.
            The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on back-to-back bunt singles from outfielder Neil Cashes and third baseman Pat Lydon, and a one-out RBI single from catcher Matthew Kaplon.
            Moravian would score twice in the top of the seventh for a 2-1 lead.  Senior designated hitter Matt Kensecki walked with two outs and scored on a pair of errors on a ball hit by junior catcher Austin Rock.  Senior third baseman Jon Baltz, pictured at right, hit an RBI single to score Rock with the go ahead run.
            The Greyhounds added a run on the top of the eighth for a 3-1 advantage when junior shortstop Dave Zubia walked with an out, moved to third on a double from senior outfielder Jason Huber and scored on a two-out RBI single by senior outfielder Mike Zubia.
            Moravian pushed two more runs home in the top half of the ninth inning to push the lead to 5-1.  Rock led off with a walk and crossed the plate on an RBI infield single by sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore while Baltz would come home on an RBI single by Huber.
            Each team had eight hits in the game.  Huber was three-for-four for the Greyhounds while Rock was one for-three with a pair of runs scored.  Kaplon was three-for-four to lead the Rangers at the plate while Cashes and Lydon were both two-for-three.
            Sophomore Thomas Fenyak, pictured at left, improved to 4-2 on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing a run on eight hits and a walk to go with a career high ten strikeouts in eight innings of action.  Freshman Jason Jamula tossed the final inning for Moravian, striking out one.
            Pat Rock started on the mound for Drew, allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits and four walks to go with five strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings of action.  Dan Blum tossed the final 1 2/3 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits and a walk to go with four strikeouts.

            The Moravian College baseball team has had the final game of its three-game Landmark Conference series at Drew University scheduled for Saturday, April 23rd postponed due to the weather. The contest has been rescheduled for Monday, April 25th at 3:30 p.m. in Madison, New Jersey.

At Drew University - Won 9-0 & Won 4-2 - Game #1 Boxscore & Game #2 Boxscore

            The Moravian College baseball team swept a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Drew University, 9-0 and 4-2, Friday to extend its winning streak to nine games as the Greyhounds took a two-game lead with four games remaining in the Landmark Conference season as The University of Scranton defeated The Catholic University of America twice on Friday. The win in the first game also clinched Moravian's third straight trip to the Landmark Conference Tournament, which begins on May 7th at the top seed.
            In the opener, junior Brendan Close, pictured at right, tossed his school record fourth shutout of the season and improved to 9-0, also a school record, with a four-hit shutout.  Close had seven strikeouts to extend his school record to 85 for this year, and he did not allow a walk in the game for the fifth time this season while lowering his season ERA to 0.55.  Close is now 21-3 in his career with seven shutouts and 217 strikeouts, all school marks.
            The Greyhounds gave Close all of the offense he needed before he even took the mound with two runs in the top of the first inning.  Junior shortstop Dave Zubia was hit by a pitch to start the game, and he scored on an RBI single from junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe.  O’Keefe would eventually cross the plate on an error on a ground ball hit by senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer.
            Moravian added six runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 8-0.  Freshman outfielder Joseph Connell led off with a double and scored on an RBI single from Dave Zubia.  O’Keefe added another RBI single to plate Dave Zubia while senior outfielder Mike Zubia had an RBI single to score senior outfielder Jason Huber, who had singled.  Senior designated hitter Jacob Millen added an RBI single that pushed O’Keefe home while Schweitzer connected on an RBI sacrifice fly to score Mike Zubia.  Senior catcher Blake Shortall finished the inning with an RBI single to plate Millen.
            The Greyhounds finished the scoring with a run in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single from Mike Zubia that scored Dave Zubia, who had reached on an error to start the stanza.
            Moravian had a 15-4 advantage in hits in the first game with O’Keefe, pictured at left, going three-for-four with two RBIs and two runs.  Mike Zubia was three-for-five with a pair of RBIs while Millen was two-for-three.  Shortall was two-for-four for the Greyhounds while Huber finished the game two-for-five.  Dave Zubia was one-for-four but scored three runs for Moravian.  Designated hitter Tom Murray was two-for-three for the Rangers.
            Tom Koonz took the loss for Drew, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 12 hits and two walks to go with one strikeout in four innings of action.  Ben Lynch tossed the final three innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits and one strikeout.
            In the second contest, the Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  O’Keefe started a two-out rally by being hit by a pitch.  Mike Zubia hit a single, and after a double steal, O’Keefe scored on an error on a ground ball hit by junior designated hitter Gregg Steinman.  Junior catcher Austin Rock drew a walk to load the bases before senior third baseman Jon Baltz connected on a two-RBI single to score Mike Zubia and Steinman.
            Moravian would extend its lead to 4-0 with a run in the top of the fourth inning when Schweitzer, who had reached on a fielder’s choice for the second out of the inning, scored on an RBI single from Dave Zubia.
            Drew would score its first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single from outfielder Drew Orbergfell.  The Rangers then added another run in the bottom of the seventh when second baseman Michael Bodden scored on a Greyhound error.
            The Rangers had a 9-7 edge in hits n the second game with outfielder Streven DeBonis and first baseman Benny Lyman each going two-for-four.  Huber was two-for-four to lead the Greyhounds while Baltz, pictured at right, was one-for-three with two RBIs.
            Moravian freshman Jonathan Harasin improved to 6-1 in his debut season, allowing a run on eight hits and two walks to go with six strikeouts in six innings of action.  Junior Kyle Longernecker picked up his seventh save of the year for the Greyhounds after giving up an unearned run on a hit and two strikeouts in the final inning.
            Evan Martens took the loss for Drew after allowing four unearned runs on seven hits and three walks to go with a pair of strikeouts.

Vs. Neumann University - Won 8-7 (11 innings) - Boxscore

            Senior shortstop Matthew Pezzato, pictured at right, drew a bases loaded, RBI walk in the bottom of the 11th inning to help lead the Moravian College baseball team to an 8-7, 11-inning non-conference win over Neumann University at Gillespie Field Wednesday afternoon.
            For the Greyhounds, it was their ninth straight win at home, and the squad has won 22 of its last 23 games at Gillespie Field.
            Moravian jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Jason Huber drew a walk to start the inning, and senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer also walked.  Junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe then hit an RBI double off the wall in centerfield to score Huber before senior outfielder Mike Zubia connected on a two RBI single pushing Schweitzer and O’Keefe across the plate.
            The Knights would get a run in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by freshman designated hitter Bobby McCormick, and Neumann cuts Moravian’s lead to 3-2 with a run in the top of the third inning on a triple from senior third baseman Mathieu Vallieres and an RBI sacrifice fly from senior first baseman Matt Grossi.
            The Greyhounds would get a run in the bottom half of the third to up their lead to 4-2.  Zubia led off the inning with a single, and he scored on an RBI double from junior catcher Austin Rock. 
            Neumann pulled within a run again in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single from junior outfielder Derrek Etsell to score Vallieres.
            Moravian would get that run back in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore singled with one out and scored on a two-out RBI single from Schweitzer.
            The Greyhounds extended their lead to 7-3 with two runs in the bottom of the eighth.  Freshman second baseman Edwin Balcarcel was hit by a pitch with two outs, and O’Keefe had a single to reach base.  Zubia, pictured at left, would connect on a two-RBI double to score Balcarcel and O’Keefe.
            Moravian would need those runs as Neumann scored four times in the top half of the ninth to tie the game at 7-7.  Vallieres got things started with a walk, and he scored on an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Bill Pace.  Etsell had an RBI single to score Grossi while Pace came across the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly in foul territory by junior shortstop Kevin Flannigan.  Etsell scored the tying run on an RBI sacrifice fly from sophomore catcher Joey Armata.
            The Knights would get a runner to third base in the top of the 11th but were unable to score.
            In the bottom of the 11th for the Greyhounds, junior catcher Blake Shortall hit a one-out single and moved to third on a ground ball hit by freshman pinch hitter Joshua Barfield that had a throwing error.  After freshman Joseph Connell came on to pinch run for Shortall, senior third baseman Jon Baltz was intentionally walked to load the bases for Pezzato.  After starting with a 0-2 count, Pezzato took four straight balls for the walk-off walk.
            Neumann finished the game with a 14-13 edge in hits with Etsell going three-for-six with two RBIs and two runs.  Vallieres, Flannigan and Armata were all two-for-five for the Knights with Vallieres scoring three times.  Zubia was three-for-six with four RBIs and a pair of runs to lead Moravian while O’Keefe, pictured at right, was two-for-six with two runs, and O'Keefe became the third player in school history to reach 150 career hits.  Del Priore had a two-for-five performance of the Greyhounds while senior designated hitter Jacob Millen was two-for-two.
            Moravian used four pitchers in the game with sophomore Frank Trautz earning his second win of the season with two innings of relief action that including a hit.  Freshman Robert Solano started for the Greyhounds and gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out eight while freshman Evan Bray tossed 1 2/3 innings with two hits and two strikeouts.  Junior Kyle Longernecker pitched 1 1/3 innings with four runs, three earned, on three hits and a walk to go with one strikeout.
            Neumann used seven pitcher in the contest with senior Sean Quigley suffering the loss after giving up an unearned run on a hit and three walks to go with three strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings of work.

            The Moravian College baseball team has postponed its non-conference home game versus Montclair State University for Tuesday, April 19th due to the weather. The game has not been rescheduled at this time.

At Albright College - Won 26-5 - Boxscore

            The Moravian College baseball team scored a season high 26 runs, just to shy of the school record, in a 26-5 non-conference win at Albright College Monday.
            The Greyhounds did set school game records for hits with 32 and at-bats with 60, breaking records from 2009, and Moravian captured its sixth straight victory and won for the tenth time in 11 games.  The Greyhounds used 18 players in the field with 15 registering a hit, and the squad batted around twice in the game.
            Moravian opened the scoring with five runs in the top of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Jason Huber hit an RBI ground-rule double while junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe, pictured at right, had an RBI single.  Senior designated hitter Jacob Millen had an RBI ground out that scored two runs with an error on the play while junior shortstop Dave Zubia drove in the final run of the inning with a bases loaded RBI hit by pitch in his second at-bat of the inning.
            The Greyhounds scored three more runs in the top of the second for an 8-0 lead.  Senior third baseman Jon Baltz had an RBI double in the inning before senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer connected on a two-RBI double.
            Moravian pushed nine runs across the plate in the top of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 17-0.  Schweitzer started the scoring in the inning with a two-RBI single and a third run scored on an error while freshman outfielder Joseph Connell reached on an error that scored a run.  O’Keefe hit a two-RBI single while senior designated hitter Matt Kensecki connected on an RBI single in his first at-bat of the game.  Junior catcher Austin Rock had an RBI single while Schweitzer finished off the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly. 
            The Greyhounds added five more runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 22-0 advantage.  Two runs scored when freshman outfielder Harrison Fontiex reached on a fielder’s choice while Rock had an RBI double.  Junior third baseman Gregg Steinman, pictured at left, connected on a two-run homer, his first collegiate home run, in his first at-bat of the contest to finish the scoring in the inning.
            Albright would break up the shutout with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Outfielder Nick Riegel drew an RBI bases loaded walk before outfielder Jared Ruppert scored on a balk.  Designated hitter Justin Danser had an RBI single to finish off the inning.
            Moravian added a run on the top half of the eighth for a 23-3 lead on an RBI single from freshman pinch hitter Joel Middleton. 
            The Greyhounds would score three more times in the top of the ninth on an RBI double from sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore and a two-RBI double by O’Keefe.
            The Lions added two runs on the bottom of the ninth on an RBI infield single from pinch hitter Tyler Meckley while outfielder Matt Pannella had an RBI walk to end the scoring.
            Moravian had a 32-7 advantage in hits in the game led by O’Keefe, the only Greyhound to play the entire contest, who was five-for-eight at the plate with five RBIs and two runs scored.  Baltz, pictured at right, was four-for-four with three runs while Huber went three-for-four with two runs.  Freshman shortstop Dan Seitzinger was three-for-four with three runs for Moravian while Rock went three-for-five with two runs and two RBIs. 
            Schweitzer was two-for-two with five RBIs for the Greyhounds while Dave Zubia was two-for-three.  Del Priore was also two-for-three with three runs while senior outfielder Mike Zubia went two-for-four with two runs.  Danser was two-for-three for Albright with an RBI.
            The Greyhounds also used six pitchers in the game with a set rotation that had freshman Christopher Soltys start and pick up his first collegiate win after allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out five batters in four innings of action.  Freshman Benjamin Hammel tossed one inning with a strikeout while sophomore Matt Cordes had three walks and a strikeout in one inning of action.
            Freshman Tim Smith gave up three runs on a hit and three walks with two strikeouts in his inning of work while freshman Anthony Perez-Florido had two strikeouts in an inning.  Sophomore Thomas Fenyak gave up two runs on four hits and a walk with one strikeout in the final inning of the game.
            Albright used seven pitchers with Brian Kurtz suffering the loss after allowing eight runs, six earned, on eight hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings of action.

            The Moravian College baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Arcadia University Sunday afternoon at Gillespie Field, winning 5-1 and 3-1, to give head coach Paul Engelhardt his 100th career victory.
            Engelhardt, pictured at right, won his 100th game in the opener in just his 183rd game in five seasons as Moravian’s head coach. It was also the team's 20th win of the season to give the program three straight 20-win seasons.  Engelhardt now has a 101-83 career mark as the Greyhounds captured their eighth straight win at Gillespie Field this season.  Moravian has won 21 of its last 22 games at home dating back to 2010.
            In the opener, the Knights took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when sophomore outfielder Brandon Martin led off the game with a single and scored on a two-out, RBI single from junior outfielder Kyle Jackson.
            Moravian answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first to take a 2-1 lead.  Senior outfielder Jason Huber hit a one-out single, stole second base and scored on an RBI single from junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe.  O’Keefe scored the go ahead run on a two-out, RBI single from junior designated hitter Gregg Steinman.
            The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning when O’Keefe walked and eventually scored on a passed ball.
            Moravian finished off the scoring in the opener with two runs in the fifth inning.  Junior shortstop Dave Zubia hit a one-out single and scored on a failed pickoff attempt of Huber at first base.  Huber scored on another Knight error in the inning.
            The Greyhounds had a 5-4 edge in hits in the game, and both Huber and O’Keefe were each one-for-two with two runs scored.
            Moravian junior pitcher Brendan Close, pictured at left, won his school record eighth game of the season to improve to 8-0 with a run on four hits and no walks while striking out seven to tie his own single season record with 78.  Close is now 20-3 in his career with 210 strikeouts, both school records. 
            Senior Jason Heryla took the loss for Arcadia, allowing five runs, just two earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out four batters.
            In the second game, the Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.  Junior catcher Austin Rock was hit by a pitch with one out and scored on an error after a bunt single by senior designated hitter Matt Kensecki.  Senior third baseman Jon Baltz, who had walked after Rock’s at-bats, scored what was the winning run on a sacrifice fly from senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer.
            Arcadia scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut Moravian’s lead in half.  Sophomore Jerry Smith hit a one-out single and scored on a Moravian error.
            The Greyhounds finished the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning when Schweitzer, pictured at right, hit a one-out single and scored on an RBI single by Huber.
            The Knights had a 7-6 edge in hits in the game with Smith going three-for-three.  Schweitzer was two-for-two with an RBI and a run to lead Moravian.
            Greyhound freshman pitcher Jonathan Harasin improved to 5-1 on the mound after allowing an unearned run on seven hits to go with three strikeouts in six innings of action.  Junior Kyle Longernecker picked up his sixth save of the season with a walk in the final inning of action.
            Arcadia junior Marc Gottfried went the distance, allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out two batters.

            The Moravian College baseball team has postponed its non-conference doubleheader at Arcadia University for Saturday, April 16th due to the weather forecast. The twinbill has been rescheduled for Sunday, April 17th at Moravian's Gillespie Field with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

            The Moravian College baseball team has postponed its non-conference home game versus FDU-Florham for Wednesday, April 13th at Gillespie Field due to the weather. The contest has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 28th at 3:30 p.m. in Bethlehem.

            The Moravian College baseball team swept a Landmark Conference doubleheader from The University of Scranton on Sunday afternoon by identical 4-2 scores to extend the Greyhounds home winning streak over conference opponents to 18.      
            Moravian is now a win away or a Juniata College loss away from clinching its third straight Landmark Conference Tournament, and head coach Paul Engelhardt is one win shy of 100 career wins in just his fifth season.
            In the opener, the Royals took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  Sophomore outfielder Michael Gaeta scored the opening run on a passed ball before senior outfielder Jason Lane hit an RBI single that scored junior second baseman Jesse Outhouse.
            The Greyhounds answered with four runs in the bottom half of the second to take the lead.  Junior designated hitter Gregg Steinman was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and he scored on an RBI double from junior catcher Austin Rock.  Two batters later, junior shortstop Dave Zubia, pictured at right, connected on a two-RBI double to score Rock and sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore, who had walked.  Senior outfielder Jason Huber finished the inning with an RBI triple scoring Dave Zubia.
            Moravian had a 6-5 edge in this in the game with Rock and Huber each going two-for-three with an RBI.  Dave Zubia was one-for-three with two RBIs.
            Sophomore Thomas Fenyak, pictured at left, improved to 3-2 on the season, allowing a pair of unearned runs on three hits with four strikeouts in six innings of action.  Junior Kyle Longernecker earned his fourth save of the year, giving up two hits and striking out one natter in an inning.
            Scranton junior pitcher Rocky Sawyer took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
            The Royals took an early 2-0 lead in the second game as well with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning.  Junior shortstop Matt Rayha scored on a throwing error on a stolen base attempt while senior first baseman David Giglio had an RBI single.
            In the bottom of the third inning, Huber, pictured at left, stole his second base of the game for the Greyhounds, becoming the school's all-time record holder with 44 career stolen bases.
            Moravian scored once in the bottom of the fourth inning when Dave Zubia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score senior third baseman Jon Baltz, who had walked earlier in the inning.
            The Greyhounds then scored three times in the bottom half of the fifth for the 4-2 lead.  Junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe would score the tying run on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt from freshman outfielder Joseph Connell.  Baltz followed with an RBI single to score senior outfielder Mike Zubia with the winning run.  Connell finished with scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Baltz.
            Scranton had a 7-5 edge in hits in the second game with Giglio going three-for-three with an RBI.  Sophomore third baseman Richard Pohl was two-for-four for the Royals.  Baltz was one-for-two with a pair of RBIs to lead the Greyhounds.
            Freshman Jonathan Harasin improved to 4-1 on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts in six innings of action.  Longernecker, pictured at right, picked up his second save of the day and fifth of the season with two strikeouts in the final inning.
            Junior Corey Gorman took the loss for Scranton after allowing four runs on five hits and five walks with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of action.

            Junior pitcher Brendan Close of the Moravian College baseball team came one out from his first collegiate no-hitter, and he struck out a school record 16 batters to lead the Greyhounds to a 6-0 Landmark Conference win over The University of Scranton Saturday at Gillespie Field.
            Close, pictured at right, is now 7-0 this season, tying the single season school record for victories, and it was his third shutout of the season, also tying the school mark.  He allowed a walk in the seventh inning of the game, just his fourth walk allowed in 51 innings this year.  Close is now 19-3 in his career with six shutouts and 203 strikeouts, all school records.
            Moravian, which has now won 16 straight home games against Landmark Conference opponents, would give Close all the offense he needed in the bottom of the first inning.  Junior shortstop Dave Zubia led off with a walk and he scored on an RBI single from senior outfielder Mike Zubia.
            The Greyhounds added a run in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by senior designated hitter Jacob Millen. 
            Moravian pushed the lead to 4-0 with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth when senior third baseman Jon Baltz connected on a two-RBI double.  The Greyhounds added a run in the sixth inning on another RBI single by Mike Zubia, pictured at left.
            The Greyhounds finished the scoring with a run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single from senior designated hitter Matt Kensecki.  Moravian celebrated Senior Day before the game, and all seven seniors on the roster had a hit in the game.
            Scranton senior outfielder Chris Stallone broke up Close’s no-hit bid with an infield single to shortstop in the ninth inning.
            Moravian had a 14-1 edge in hits in the game with Mike Zubia going three-for-four with two RBIs.  Junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe was three-for-five for the Greyhounds with three runs scored.
            Sophomore Robert Della Polla started on the mound for Scranton, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks while striking out six batters.  Sophomore Ryan Eden tossed the other three innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk.

At Elizabethtown College - Lost 12-1 - Boxscore

            The Moravian College baseball team had its five-game winning streak snapped in a 12-1 non-conference loss at Elizabethtown College Wednesday afternoon.
            The Blue Jays jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an infield RBI single from first baseman Brian Verdelli and a two-RBI single by third baseman Ian Smith.
            Elizabethtown added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-RBI double off the bat of catcher Dillon Tagle, and the Blue Jays pushed their lead to 11-0 with a six-run sixth inning. 
            Moravian scored its only run of the contest in the top of the eighth inning.  Freshman outfielder Joseph Connell hit a two-out double and scored on an RBI single from junior shortstop Dave Zubia.
            Elizabethtown would add one more run in the bottom half of the eighth.  The Blue Jays finished the game with an 11-8 edge in hits with Smith going three-for-five with three RBIs.  Outfielder Pat Mulligan was two-for-three for Elizabethtown while Tagle had three RBIs and second baseman Andrew Gordon scored three times.  Senior outfielder Mike Zubia, pictured, was three-for-three for the Greyhounds.
            Moravian freshman Robert Solano suffered his first loss of the season, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk to go with a pair of strikeouts.  Sophomore Frank Trautz tossed two innings and gave up two runs on a hit and two walks while striking out four batters while freshman Jason Jamula pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed six runs, three earned, on three hits and three walks with one strikeout.  Freshman Evan Bray tossed the final 2 1/3 innings for Moravian with one run on three hits to go with one strikeout.
            Vaclav Hasik tossed eight innings to get the win for the Blue Jays as he allowed a run on six hits and a walk while striking out four batters.  Todd Leister pitched the final inning for Elizabethtown and gave up two hits.

            The Moravian College baseball team swept a Landmark Conference doubleheader from The United States Merchant Marine Academy Sunday afternoon at Gillespie Field, winning the first game, 7-1, and taking the second game, 8-5.
            The Greyhounds have won 15 straight home games against Landmark Conference opponents, and Moravian swept its second conference of the season. The Greyhounds are also on a five-game winning streak overall.
            In the opener, Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when junior shortstop Dave Zubia walked with two outs and scored on an RBI single from senior outfielder Jason Huber, pictured at right. 
            The Mariners tied the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from freshman second baseman Warren Hartmann. 
            The Greyhounds retook the lead with a run in the bottom half of the fourth when senior outfielder Mike Zubia singled and scored on an RBI single from junior catcher Austin Rock.
            Moravian added five runs to its lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Huber had an RBI single and scored on a passed ball while Mike Zubia and Rock each hit RBI singles.  Senior third baseman Jon Baltz drove in the final run with an RBI ground out.
            The Greyhounds had an 11-4 edge in hits in the first game with Rock going two-for-three with two RBIs.  Mike Zubia was also two-for-three with two runs while junior designated hitter Gregg Steinman and freshman outfielder Joey Connell were both two-for-three.  Huber was two-for-four with a pair of RBIs for Moravian.
            Junior Thomas Fenyak, pictured at left, improved to 2-2 on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing an unearned run on three hits and a walk to go with five strikeouts.  Freshman Chris Soltys tossed the final inning with a hit and a strikeout.
            The Mariners used three pitchers in the contest with junior Andy Martin taking the loss.
            In the second game, the Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Dave Zubia led off the game with a single and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Mike Zubia.
            Moravian added two runs in the bottom of the second for a 3-0 advantage.  Senior designated hitter Jacob Millen had an RBI double in the inning while Baltz had an RBI single.
            The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 5-0 with two more runs in the bottom half of the third inning.  Junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe singled to start the inning and scored on a steal of home while Rock scored on an error.
            Moravian pushed its lead to 8-0 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Mike Zubia, pictured at right, doubled with one out and scored on a passed ball while Millen hit a two-run homer that scored junior catcher Blake Shortall, who had walked.  The home run was Millen’s first of the season.
            USMMA scored twice in the top of the sixth to cut Moravian’s lead to 8-2.  Junior outfielder John Hubach scored on an error while freshman shortstop Daniel Collins had an RBI single.
            The Mariners scored three times in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded when the game ended.  Freshman first baseman Jake Martin and sophomore designated hitter Dustin Thomsen each had RBI singles while Hartmann hit an RBI grounder.
            Both teams had seven hits in the game with Millen going two-for-three with three RBIs, two runs, a double and a homer for Moravian.
            Freshman Jonathan Harasin earned his third win of the season on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing a pair of unearned runs on four hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts.  Sophomore Matt Cordes tossed a third of an inning for Moravian while freshman Robert Solano tossed two-thirds of an inning and earned his first save for entering the game with the potential tying run on-deck.
            The Mariners also used three pitchers in the second game with freshman Timothy Arner taking the loss.

            Junior pitcher Brendan Close of the Moravian College baseball team became the school’s all-time leader in strikeouts as he recorded ten strikeouts in his sixth win of the season to lead Moravian to a 7-1 Landmark Conference win over The United States Merchant Marine Academy Saturday afternoon at Gillespie Field.
            Close, who is now 6-0 this season and 18-3 in his career, the school record for wins, now has 187 career strikeouts, passing the mark of 186 set by Bob Zerfass ’65.  Close, pictured at right, had his scoreless inning streak snapped at 22 innings during the game, but he allowed just one run on five hits and no walks in eight innings of action.  In 42 innings of action this season, Close has struck out 55 batters and walked just three.
            The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first to give Close all of the offense he needed.  Junior shortstop Dave Zubia reached on an error to start the inning, and he scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Mike Zubia.  Senior outfielder Jason Huber, who had walked, scored the second run on an RBI sacrifice fly from junior designated hitter Gregg Steinman.
            Moravian added a run in the third winning when Dave Zubia led off with a walk and scored on a two-out RBI double by Mike Zubia.
            USMMA would score a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut Moravian’s lead to 3-1 when junior outfielder John Hubach reached on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on an RBI single from freshman first baseman Jake Martin.
            The Greyhounds would answer in the bottom of the sixth with a run to push their lead to 4-1.  Junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe led off with a triple to left centerfield, and he score on the play when the relay throw went out of play.
            Moravian added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Dave Zubia, pictured at left, hit a one-out, solo homer to left field, his first collegiate home run.
            The Greyhounds finished off the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth.  Senior pinch hitter Jacob Millen hit a one-out single and freshman Harrison Fonteix came on to pinch run.  Freshman second baseman Edwin Balcacrel then hit a fielder’s choice that put runners on second and third.  Senior third baseman Jon Baltz followed with a two RBI single to score Fonteix and Balcarcel.
            Moravian had a 6-5 edge in hits in the game with Mike Zubia going one-for-three with two RBIs.  Baltz was one-for-four with a pair of RBIs for the Greyhounds while Dave Zubia scored three runs.  Freshman third baseman Andrew MacKinnon and Martin were both two-for-four for the Mariners.
            Greyhound junior Kyle Longernecker tossed the final inning, facing just three batters.  Sophomore Dustin Thomsen took the loss for USMMA, allowing seven runs, just two earned, on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings of action.

Vs. Montclair State University - Postponed to April 19th

            The Moravian College baseball team has postponed its non-conference game versus Montclair State University for Thursday, March 31st due to weather and field conditions. The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 19th at 4:00 p.m. at Gillespie Field.

Vs. Misericordia University - Won 5-3 - Boxscore

            The Moravian College baseball team came back from an early deficit to defeat Misericordia University, 5-3, in non-conference action at Gillespie Field Wednesday afternoon.
            The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on an RBI single from sophomore second baseman Andrew Tressa.
            The Greyhounds would tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Junior designated hitter Gregg Steinman reached on an error with one out, and freshman Harrison Fonteix came into pinch run.  With two outs, senior third baseman Jon Baltz, pictured at right, hit an RBI single, Moravian’s first hit of the game, to score Fonteix. 
            Misericordia retook the lead in the top of the sixth inning when an RBI sacrifice by freshman first baseman David Price scored senior third baseman Nate Newman.
            Moravian would take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the seven inning with three runs.  Junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe led off with a single and senior outfielder Mike Zubia hit a sacrifice bunt.  Then, senior designated hitter Matt Kensecki and senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer each drew walks to load the bases before Baltz connected on a three-RBI double to right centerfield to clear the bases.
            The Greyhounds added run in the bottom half of the eighth for a 5-2 lead.  Junior shortstop Dave Zubia drew a walk to start the inning, and sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore hit a sacrifice bunt.  O’Keefe then hit a fly out to the wall in right field to move Dave Zubia to third, and an error on the relay throw allowed him to score.
            The Cougars would get a run back in the top of the ninth inning as they loaded the bases with no outs and Newman drew an RBI walk before Moravian was able to get out of the inning with the victory.
            Misericordia had a 7-4 edge in hits in the game with Tressa going two-for-four with an RBI.  Freshman shortstop Ryan Cacchioli was two-for-five for the Cougars.  Baltz was two-for-three to lead the Greyhounds with four RBIs.
            On the mound, Moravian junior Kyle Longernecker, pictured at left, picked up his first win of the season with three innings of relief work.  Longernecker allowed a run on four hits and two walks while striking out three batters.  Freshman Jason Jamula started for the Greyhounds and gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits and four walks while striking out four batters in the first six innings of the game.
            Misericordia used four pitchers in the game with sophomore Justin Shuleski taking the loss with a third of an inning of relief work that gave up three runs on three hits and two walks.  Sophomore Pete Doggett tossed the first five innings for the Cougars and allowed an unearned run on a hit with two strikeouts.

            Freshman pitcher Jonathan Harasin tossed a six-hit shutout, and the Moravian College baseball team scored six runs in the first two innings to post a 6-0 win at Susquehanna University Sunday afternoon to close out a Landmark Conference series.
            Harasin improved to 2-1 on the year after allowing six hits and striking out three batters in the first complete game of his collegiate career.
            Moravian gave Harasin all of the offense he needed before he even made it to the mound.  The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning when senior outfielder Jason Huber reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on an RBI ground out by junior catcher Austin Rock.
            The Greyhounds added five runs in the top of the second for the 6-0 lead.  Senior third baseman Jon Baltz was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and he would score on a Susquehanna error.  Junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe hit a two-RBI single to score freshman outfielder Joseph Connell, who had singled, and junior shortstop Dave Zubia, pictured at right, who was also hit by a pitch.  Senior outfielder Mike Zubia followed with a two-RBI double scoring O’Keefe and Huber, who had reached on the error that allowed Baltz to score.
            Moravian had a 10-6 edge in hits in the game with Connell going three-for-four and Dave Zubia going two-for-three.  O’Keefe and Mike Zubia were both one-for-four with two RBIs.  Outfielder Ethan Rieker was two-for-four for the Crusaders.
            Susquehanna used five pitchers in the game with Matt Lottes suffering the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, on three hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings of action.

            Moravian College junior pitcher Brendan Close became the winningest pitcher in school history, picking up his 17th career victory with a 1-0 win in the opening game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Susquehanna University on Saturday; however, the Crusaders snapped the Greyhounds’ 13-game winning streak against conference opponents with a 5-4 win over Moravian in the second game.
            Close, pictured at right, tossed a five-hit shutout in the opener, his second straight shutout, and he has not allowed a run in 17 innings.  Close also allowed one walk while striking out nine Crusaders.  Close is now 17-3 in his Moravian career, and moved into second in the record books with his fifth career shutout, and he is second with 177 career strikeouts.
            The Greyhound scored the only run of the opening game in the top of the third inning.  Freshman outfielder Joseph Connell led off with a single, stole second base and eventually scored on an RBI ground ball hit by senior third baseman Jon Baltz. 
            Susquehanna had a 5-3 edge in hits in the opener but Connell was the only player with more than one hit, going two-for-two. 
            Keith Needham took the loss on the mound for the Crusaders, allowing a run on three hits with four strikeouts.
            In the second game, the Greyhounds scored twice in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 lead.  Baltz scored the opening run on an RBI ground out by senior outfielder Mike Zubia while junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe scored on a Susquehanna error.
            The Crusaders answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning on a one-out solo home run by second baseman Justin Portzline, and Susquehanna tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI fielder’s choice by Portzline.
            Moravian retook the lead, 3-2, on a run in the top of the third inning when O’Keefe, pictured at left, scored on an RBI single from Zubia.
            Susquehanna scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for its first lead of the game.  Designated hitter Nick Ferlise and outfielder Ethan Rieker each had RBI singles in the inning.
            The Greyhounds tied the game again at 4-4 in the top half of the fifth.  Connell led off with a single and stole second base.  After a ground out, Connell scored on an RBI squeeze bunt by Baltz.
            The Crusaders won the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning when third baseman Dan Wing doubled and outfielder Ken Kayama followed with an RBI single to score the winning run.
            Susquehanna had an 8-7 edge in hits in the second Portzline going two-for-four with two runs and two RBIs.  Ferlise and Rieker were also two-for-four for the Crusaders.  O’Keefe led Moravian at the plate with a two-for-three performance with a pair of runs scored.  Zubia had two RBIs for the Greyhounds while going one-for-three.
            Freshman Robert Solano started on the mound for Moravian and allowed four runs on six hits and two walks with one strikeout in 3 2/3 innings of action.  Sophomore Tommy Fenyak fell to 1-2 on the season after giving up a run on two hits and two walks with one strikeout in three innings of work.
            Brian Wendig went the distance on the hill for Susquehanna with four runs, two earned on seven hits and one strikeout.

            The 25th-ranked College of New Jersey baseball team posted a 9-2 non-conference win over host Moravian College Tuesday afternoon at Gillespie Field.
            The Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when second baseman Scott Kelly led off with a single and eventually scored on a passed ball and an RBI double by outfielder Mike Murphy.
            The Greyhounds tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning.  Senior designated hitter Matt Kensecki led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, his first homer of the season.  Junior catcher Blake Shortall then reached on an error and scored on an RBI ground out by senior third baseman Jon Baltz, pictured at right.
            TCNJ retook the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Murphy and an error by Moravian.  The Lions added two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-RBI double from catcher Mike Galeotafiore, and TCNJ finished the scoring with two runs in the eighth off of a two-RBI double by Kelly.
            The Lions held a 10-5 edge in hits in the game with Kelly going three-for-five with two RBIs and two runs, and Galeotafiore and Murphy each going two-for-four with two RBIs.  Kensecki was two-for-four with his solo homer for Moravian while junior shortstop Dave Zubia was also two-for-four for the Greyhounds.

            The Moravian College baseball team completed a three-game series sweep of Juniata College and won its 12th straight game against Landmark Conference competition with a 5-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Gillespie Field.
            The Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Senior outfielder Mike Zubia started the inning with a single, and he scored along with junior catcher Austin Rock on a bases loaded, two-RBI single by junior shortstop Dave Zubia.
            Juniata answered in the top of the third inning with a run to cut Moravian’s lead to 2-1.  Sophomore outfielder Benjamin Mersky reached on an error and scored on a two-out RBI double from freshman third baseman Joe Sforza.
            Moravian added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 4-1 lead.  Senior outfielder Jason Huber drew a one-out walk, stole second base and scored on a two-out RBI double from junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe.  After O’Keefe stole third, Mike Zubia hit an RBI bunt single to third base to score O’Keefe.
            Greyhound senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer, pictured above, led off the bottom half of the eighth inning with a single for Moravian, becoming the 19th player in school history and second in two days to reach 100 career hits.  Schweitzer would score on a bases loaded RBI walk from freshman outfielder Joseph Connell in his first at-bat of the game to give the Greyhounds a 5-1 lead.
            Moravian had an 8-5 edge in hits with Schweitzer and Mike Zubia both going two-for-four.  Dave Zubia led the Greyhounds with two RBIs.  Sophomore designated hitter Ryan Edley was two-for-four for the Eagles.
            On the mound, freshman Jonathan Harasin picked up his first collegiate win for Moravian, allowing an unearned run on five hits and three walks while striking out ten batters in seven innings of action.  Junior Kyle Longernecker picked up his third save of the season with two scoreless innings for the Greyhounds.
            Juniata used three pitchers with junior Matt Regan taking the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks, and he recorded nine strikeouts in seven-plus innings of action.

            The defending Landmark Conference Champion Moravian College baseball team opened defense of its title with a doubleheader sweep of Juniata College Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 3-0 behind a three-hitter by junior Brendan Close, pictured at right, and taking the nightcap, 17-2, at Gillespie Field.  The doubleheader was Moravian's home opener as well.
            The Greyhounds have won 11 straight games against Landmark Conference opponents including three straight over Juniata including last year’s conference title game and all 11 games have been played at Gillespie Field.
            In the opening game, Moravian scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Senior outfielder Mike Zubia led off with an infield single and would scored on a one-out RBI single from sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore.  Senior outfielder Jason Huber drew a bases loaded RBI walk to score junior designated hitter Gregg Steinman, who had also walked.  An error on a ground ball by senior third baseman Jon Baltz would allow junior catcher Blake Shortall to score.
            The Greyhounds had a 7-3 edge in hits in the opening contest with Del Priore going two-for-three.
            Close improved to 4-0 on the mound for Moravian, and tied the school record with his 16th career win.  Close allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out 11 batters.  John Love took the loss for the Eagles.
            In the second contest, Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first without a hit.  Huber, pictured at left, led off with a walk, stole second base and moved to third on a passed ball.  Huber would score his school record 119th career run on an RBI sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe.
            The Greyhounds added three runs in the bottom half of the second for a 4-0 lead.  Del Priore was hit by a pitch to start the inning and scored on an RBI fielder’s choice from junior shortstop Dave Zubia.  Huber pushed junior catcher Austin Rock across the plate with an RBI single while O’Keefe drew an RBI bases loaded walk to score Dave Zubia.
            Moravian scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth, pushing its lead to 12-0.  Huber had an RBI double to start the scoring in inning, and he scored on an RBI single from Mike Zubia.  Senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer hit an RBI ground out while senior designated hitter Matt Kensecki had an RBI single.  Rock added a two-RBI single for the Greyhounds while Huber finished the inning with a two-RBI single.
            Juniata would get on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning with two runs.  First baseman Johnny Martinez hit a leadoff double in the inning and scored on an RBI bases loaded walk from shortstop Bradley Medellin.  Second baseman Ian Thorne crossed the plate when pinch hitter Chris Beall was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
            The Greyhounds finished the scoring with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Freshman pinch hitter Dan Seitzinger reached on an error to lead off the inning, and Baltz, pictured at right, followed with a single, which was the 100th hit of his career, the 18th Greyhound to reach the milestone.  O’Keefe was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Mike Zubia hit a two-RBI double.  With the bases loaded again, freshman outfielder Joseph Connell hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score O’Keefe while senior designated hitter Jacob Millen had an RBI single to score Mike Zubia.  The final run of the game came home on an RBI single from freshman catcher Matthew Gutkes.
            Moravian had a 14-3 advantage in hits in the second game with Huber leading the way with a three-for-three performance to go with four RBIs and a pair of runs.  Dave Zubia was two-for-three with three runs while Rock was two-for-three with two runs and two RBIs.  Mike Zubia was two-for-five in the game with three RBIs and two runs while Millen was two-for-two with a pair of RBIs.  O’Keefe was held without a hit in the game but scored twice and drove in two runs.
            The Greyhounds used four pitchers in the game with freshman Robert Solano improving to 2-0 on the season after tossing the first five innings and allowing a hit and two walks while striking out three batters.  Freshman Anthony Perez-Florido gave up two runs on a hit, two talks and a strikeout in 2/3 of an inning while freshman Benjamin Hammel struck out the only batter he faced.  Freshman Chris Soltys tossed the final inning for Moravian with a hit, a walk and three strikeouts.
            Juniata also used four pitchers in the game with Joe Sforza taking the loss after allowing nine runs, just four earned, on five hits and three walks with a strikeout in 3 2/3 innings of action.

            The Moravian College baseball team has had its non-conference game at King's College on Wednesday, March 16th cancelled due to field and weather conditions. The contest will not be rescheduled.

At Muhlenberg College - Lost 3-2 - Boxscore

            The Moravian College baseball team finally played a game in the state of Pennsylvania after ten games out of the state to open the season, but the Greyhounds couldn’t rally from a 3-0 deficit, falling to rival Muhlenberg College, 3-2, at Cedarcreek Field Tuesday.
            The Greyhounds left runners at second and third in the first inning and on third base in the second.
            The Mules would take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second.  Designated hitter Max Litvak singled with an out and moved to second on a wild pitch.  After another out, shortstop John Scuderi hit an RBI single to score Litvak, and Scuderi eventually scored on a wild pitch.
            Muhlenberg would add another run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI sacrifice fly from Scuderi.
            Moravian scored both of its runs in the top of the eighth inning.  Senior outfielder Mike Zubia led off with an infield single and scored on a one-out RBI double from junior catcher Austin Rock, pictured at right.  After the second out of the inning, junior shortstop Dave Zubia hit an RBI single to score Rock.
            The Greyhounds had a 9-7 edge in hits in the game with Mike Zubia going three-for-five.  Dave Zubia and senior third baseman Jon Baltz were both two-for-four.  Outfielder Jesse Nusbaum was two-for-four to lead Muhlenberg.
           Freshman Jonathan Harasin made his first start of the season on the mound for Moravian, allowing three runs on seven hits to go with four strikeouts.  Freshman Robert Solano tossed the final inning for the Greyhounds.  Muhlenberg used six pitchers in the game with Chris Harper earning the win with 1 2/3 innings of relief action and Rob Shannon earning a save.

Vs. Penn State University-Altoona in RussMatt Invitational - Won 4-3 & Won 7-4 - Game #1 Boxscore & Game #2 Boxscore

            The Moravian College baseball team closed its trip to the 2011 RussMatt Baseball Central Florida Invitational with a doubleheader sweep of Penn State University-Altoona, capturing the first game 4-3 and taking the second contest 7-4, at Chain of Lakes Park Friday.
            Penn State-Altoona took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the opening game.  Outfielder Jimmy Baum was hit by a pitch to start the game and scored on an RBI single from outfielder Cord Heine while the Lions other run came on a Moravian error, one of five in the game for the Greyhounds.
            Moravian tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second.  Senior outfielder Mike Zubia led off with a single and scored on an RBI single from junior designated hitter Gregg Steinman, pictured at right.  Senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer singled after Zubia and tied the game on an RBI fielder’s choice by sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore.
            The Greyhounds would take the lead in the bottom of the third in the bottom of the third inning when Zubia tripled with two outs and scored on an RBI single from Schweitzer.
            Penn State-Altoona would tie the game again in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Baum.
            The contest would remain 3-3 until the bottom of the seventh.  Senior third baseman Jon Baltz led off with a single, and junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe reached on an infield single.  Zubia was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Schweitzer hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Baltz and end the game.
            Moravian had a 9-5 edge in hits in the first game with Zubia and Schweitzer each going two-for-three.  Baltz was two-for-four for the Greyhounds while Heine was two-for-three for the Lions.
            Junior Brendan Close, pictured at left, improved to 3-0 on the mound for Moravian, allowing three runs, just one earned, on five hits, and Close struck out seven batters while not allowing a walk.  Close moved into second place in school history with his 15th career win.  Trevor Conner took the loss for Penn State-Altoona with a complete game.
            In the second game, Moravian jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Baltz singled with one out, and O’Keefe followed with a single.  Zubia then hit a two-RBI triple to score Baltz and O’Keefe while senior designated hitter Jacob Millen hit an RBI single to score Zubia.
            The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 4-0 with a run in the top of the fourth inning when Del Priore drew a walk to start the inning and scored on an error. 
            Penn State-Altoona answered with a run in the bottom half of the fourth on an RBI double from second baseman Josh Wyandt.
            Moravian added two runs in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 6-1.  O’Keefe, pictured at left, led off with a double and scored on an RBI double from Schweitzer, and Schweitzer crossed the plate on an RBI double from junior catcher Austin Rock. 
            The Greyhounds scored their final run in the top of the seventh O’Keefe led off with a double and score on an RBI pinch hit double from freshman Edwin Balcarcel.
            Penn State-Altoona would make things interesting with three runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single from shortstop Nate Bennett and a two-RBI double by outfielder Ken Terpack.
            Moravian had a 12-10 edge on hits in the second game with O’Keefe going three-for-four with three runs and a pair of doubles.  Schweitzer was two-for-three for the Greyhounds while senior outfielder Jason Huber was two-for-four.  Wyandt was two-for-two for the Lions while Baum and first baseman Grady Luzier were both two-for-four.
            Sophomore Frank Trautz made his first collegiate start on the mound for Moravian, earning the win after allowing four runs, just two earned, on ten hits with five strikeouts and no walks.  Penn State-Altoona used four pitchers with Chris Keeler suffering the loss.

Vs. SUNY Institute of Technology in RussMatt Invitational - Lost 6-5 (8 inn) & Won 3-2 - Game #1 Boxscore & Game #2 Boxscore

            The Moravian College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with SUNY Institute of Technology at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Wednesday with the Wildcats winning the first game, 6-5 in eight innings, and the Greyhounds taking the second game, 3-2.
            In the opener, Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe, pictured at right, doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single from senior outfielder Mike Zubia.
            The Greyhounds added a run in the top of the second for a 2-0 lead.  Junior designated hitter Gregg Steinman drew a walk to start the inning and scored when O’Keefe was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
            SUNY IT scored three times in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead.  Shortstop John Leclair walked to start the inning and scored on an RBI single from designated hitter Michael McGrone.  McGrone and outfielder Dan Orza both crossed the plate on a Moravian error.
            Moravian would tie the contest with a run on the top of the fourth inning.  O’Keefe reached on a fielder’s choice with one out and eventually stole home.
            The Wildcats retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth with two more runs on RBI singles by outfielder Anthony Surber and Orza.
            The Greyhounds pulled within a run, 5-4, in the top of the fifth.  Senior outfielder Jason Huber singles with two outs, stole second base and scored on an RBI double from senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer, pictured at left.
            Moravian tied the game in the top of the seventh when O’Keefe hit a two-out RBI double to push Huber across the plate.
            SUNY IT scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth when Surber hit an RBI single up the middle with the bases loaded.
            The Greyhounds had an 11-9 edge in hits in the first game with O’Keefe going two-for-three.  Schweitzer, junior catcher Austin Rock and sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore each went two-for-four for Moravian.  Surber led the Wildcats with a three-for-five performance.
            Freshman Chris Soltys started on the mound for Moravian and allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in five-plus innings of action.  Freshman Anthony Perez Florido tossed one inning for the Greyhounds while freshman Evan Bray suffered the loss, giving up an unearned run on two hits and two walks with one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings of action.  Daniel Wiecek earned the win in relief for the Wildcats.
            In the second contest, Moravian once again jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first.  Huber drew a walk to lead off and stole second base.  After a ground out, Huber would score on an RBI ground out by O’Keefe.  The run scored for Huber, pictured at right, was the 118th of his career, tying the school record.
            The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 2-0 with a run in the bottom of the second inning.  Schweitzer led off with a bunt single, and he eventually scored on an RBI ground out from junior catcher Blake Shortall.
            SUNY IT tied the contest in the fourth inning.  McCrone led off with a double and scored on an RBI single from second baseman Jim Sass.  Sass, who stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch, would score on an RBI ground out from third baseman Lance Bull.
            Moravian would get the winning run in the bottom half of the fifth inning.  Senior shortstop Matt Pezzato reached on a walk with one out and scored on a bases loaded error by the Wildcats.
            SUNY IT had a 6-3 edge in hits in the second contest with Leclair going two-for-four.
            Moravian freshman pitcher Jason Jamula earned his first collegiate victory on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts in five innings of action.  Junior Kyle Longernecker picked up his second save of the year for the Greyhounds, giving up one hit and striking out two batters in two innings of action.
            The Wildcats used four pitchers in the second game with Tyler Miles suffering the loss.

Vs. Mount Aloysius College in RussMatt Invitational - Won 5-0 & Lost 5-4 - Game #1 Boxscore & Game #2 Boxscore

            The Moravian College baseball team split its first doubleheader of the 2011 season as the Greyhounds played Mount Aloysius College at the RussMatt 2011 Baseball Central Florida Invitational on Tuesday.  Moravian earned a 5-0 victory in the opener while the Mounties won the second game, 5-4.
            The Greyhounds took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the opening contest.  Senior outfielder Jason Huber singled with an out and scored on an RBI single from senior outfielder Mike Zubia.  Senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer had an RBI single to score junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe, who had walked before Mike Zubia’s hit, while senior third baseman Jon Baltz hit an RBI double to send Mike Zubia across the plate.
            Moravian added a run in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore, pictured at right, singled with one out, stole second base and scored on an RBI single from junior shortstop Dave Zubia. 
            The Greyhounds closed out the scoring with a run in the sixth inning when Del Priore had a one out single and scampered home on an RBI sacrifice fly from Dave Zubia.
            Moravian held an 11-3 advantage in hits in the opening game with Schweitzer, pictured at left, going two-for-two and Del Priore turning in a two-for-three performance.  Huber was two-for-four for the Greyhounds while first baseman Mark Saxman went two-for-two for Mount Aloysius.
            On the mound for Moravian, freshman Robert Solano tossed a three-hit shutout, allowing three walks and striking out three batters.  Mike Godissart took the loss for the Mounties with five innings of action.
            In the second game, the Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  Mike Zubia led off with a triple and scored on an RBI ground out by Baltz.
            Mount Aloysius tied the game in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from outfielder Skyler Sheeder.
            Moravian retook the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third for a 3-1 advantage.  Del Priore led off with a single and scored on an RBI double from Huber.  After an out, Huber would cross the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly from O’Keefe.
            The Mounties would take the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI double from second baseman David Brown, an RBI single from shortstop Bryan Nolan and a two-RBI single from designated hitter Matt Cornetti. 
            The Greyhounds scored once in the top of the sixth inning to pull within 5-4 on an RBI double from junior first baseman Gregg Steinman, pictured at right, that scored Baltz, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.
            The Mounties had a 12-5 edge in hits in the second game with Nolan going three-for-four and Sheeder going two-for-two.
            O’Keefe took the loss on the mound for Moravian, allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks with one strikeout in four-plus innings of action.  Junior Kyle Longernecker tossed the last two innings and gave up three hits.  Sean Steffy earned the win for Mount Aloysius.

            The Moravian College baseball team opened its 2011 Spring Break trip to the RussMatt Invitational with a 10-2 victory over Mount Saint Mary (NY) College at the ESPN/Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.
            The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Junior shortstop Dave Zubia singles with one out and moved to third on a single from junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe.  Dave Zubia scored on a passed ball for the lead.
            Moravian added three runs to its lead in the top half of the third for a 4-0 advantage.  Sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore led off with a single and score second base.  After Dave Zubia walked with one out, O’Keefe, pictured at right, hit a two-RBI triple to deep centerfield scoring two runs.  O’Keefe came across the place on an RBI but ground out by senior outfielder Mike Zubia.
            The Greyhounds pushed five more runs home in the fifth to push their lead to 9-0.  Huber and Dave Zubia had back-to-back singles to start the inning before O’Keefe drove in his third run of the game with an RBI single.  Mike Zubia hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Dave Zubia while O’Keefe came home on an RBI single from senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer.  Senior third baseman Jon Baltz followed with a single, and after a double steal, junior designated hitter Gregg Steinman connected on a two-RBI single.
            Moravian’s final run of the contest came in the top of the eighth inning when Huber, pictured at left, hit a solo home run to left field, the Greyhounds’ first homer of the season, to push the lead to 10-0.
            Mount Saint Mary scored its first run on the game in the bottom half of the eighth.  Outfielder Brian Noble led off the inning with a single and scored on a bases loaded RBI sacrifice fly by outfielder Angel Biondo.
            The Knights added another run in the bottom of the ninth inning with designated hitter Louis Peisel led off with a double and scored on an RBI ground out from first baseman John Conroy.
            The Greyhounds had a 15-5 advantage in hits in the contest with O’Keefe going four-for-five with three RBIs, a double and a triple.  Dave Zubia and Schweitzer were each two-for-three while Baltz went two-for-four and Huber was two-for-five. 
            Junior Brendan Close, pictured at right, improved to 2-0 on the mound this season for the Greyhounds, allowing just two hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in six innings of action.  Close now has 150 career strikeouts, just the third player in school history to reach that total.  Freshman Tommy Mariano tossed the final three innings for Moravian, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
            Josh Depew took the loss for the Knights after giving up nine runs, eight of them earned, on ten hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings, and Depew did register seven strikeouts.

At King's College - Postponed to March 16th

            The Moravian College baseball team's first scheduled game in Pennsylvania for Tuesday, March 2nd at King's College in Wilkes-Barre has bee postponed to Wednesday, March 16th at 3:30 p.m. The Monarchs field will not be playable until the teams return from Spring Break trips to Florida.

Vs. Rutgers-Camden at 4th Annual Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament hosted by Hampden-Sydney (VA) College - Lost 14-12 - Boxscore

            A pair of four-run innings late in the game lifted the Rutgers-Camden baseball team to a 14-12 victory over Moravian College in the final day of the 4th Annual Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament at Hampden-Sydney College Sunday as the Greyhounds suffered their first loss of the season.
            Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe hit a two-out since and would score on a bases loaded walk by senior third baseman Jon Baltz, pictured at right.
            Rutgers-Camden tied the game in the top of the second inning on an RBI single from designated hitter Joe Merlino after second baseman Jon Hydock had doubles with one out.
            The Raptors scored four runs in the top of the third to build a 5-1 lead.  Third baseman John Santilli had a two-RBI double in the inning while Merlino hit an RBI sacrifice fly and outfielder Tristan Keyser was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
            The Greyhounds would retake the lead, 6-5, with five runs in the bottom half of the third inning.  O’Keefe led off with a double, his fourth double of the season, and senior outfielder Mike Zubia singled.  Senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer hit an RBI single to score O’Keefe while Zubia scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Blatz.  Junior catcher Blake Shortall hit an RBI single to score Baltz while sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore had an RBI triple to push Shortall across the plate.  Del Priore scored the final run of the inning on an RBI single from senior outfielder Jason Huber.
            Rutgers-Camden tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the fifth with an RBI single by shortstop George Spingler.
            Moravian answered with two run in the bottom of the fifth for an 8-6 lead.  Shortall, pictured at left, was hit by a pitch to start the inning and freshman Harrison Fonteix came on to pinch run.  Huber hit an RBI single to send Fonteix home, and Huber would cross the plate on a passed ball.
            The Greyhounds extended their lead to 10-6 with two more runs in the sixth.  Schweitzer led off the sixth with a walk and Baltz singled.  Schweitzer crossed the plate on a wild pitch while Baltz would come home on an RBI sacrifice fly by junior catcher Austin Rock.
            The Raptors scored four times in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 10-10.  Santilli had a three-RBI triple in the inning before he scored the tying run on a passed ball.
            Rutgers-Camden added four more runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 14-10 lead.  First baseman CJ Mooney put the Raptors back in front with a two-RBI double while Santilli drove in Rutgers-Camden’s final runs with a two-RBI single.
            Moravian scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to finish the scoring in the game.  Zubia led off with a single and Schweitzer reached on an error for the Greyhounds.  Baltz then hit a two-RBI single but the Greyhounds left the tying runs on base in the inning.
            Rutgers-Camden had a 19-14 edge in hits in the game with Santilli going three-for-six with seven RBIs and a pair of runs scored.  Outfielder Joe Siswo was three-for-five with three runs while Merlino was three-for-four for the Raptors.  Keyser and Hydock were each two-for-five while Spingler was two-for-six.
            Zubia led Moravian at the plate with a four-for-six performance while Baltz was two-for-three with four RBIs and a pair of runs scored.  Del Priore, pictured at right, was also two-for-three while O’Keefe was two-for-five at the plate.  Huber was two-for-six for the Greyhounds with a pair of RBIs.
            Freshman Robert Solano started on the mound for Moravian, allowing five runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of action.  Sophomore Frank Trautz tossed 2 1/3 innings with a run on two hits, two walks and a strikeout while freshman Chris Soltys took the loss for the Greyhounds after giving up five runs, three earned, on four hits, two walks and a strikeout in one-plus innings of work.  Freshman Thomas Marino gave up three runs on four hits and a strikeout in an inning of action while O’Keefe tossed the final inning for Moravian with one strikeout.
            Rutgers-Camden used four pitchers in the game with John-Adam Benckert earning the win in relief after allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits and two walks while striking out a batter in 2 2/3 innings.  Chris Fries picked up a save for the Raptors after allowing a hit and striking out two batters in the final 1 1/3 innings.

Vs. Eastern University at 4th Annual Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament hosted by Hampden-Sydney (VA) College - Won 19-4 - Boxscore

            The Moravian College baseball team rolled to a 19-4 win over Eastern University in the second day of the 4th Annual Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament hosted by Hampden-Sydney College Saturday.
            The Greyhounds jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Jason Huber led off the game with a single and moved to third on a one-out double from junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe, pictured at right.  Senior outfielder Mike Zubia followed with a two-RBU double to score Huber and O’Keefe before freshman designated hitter Joshua Barfield hit an RBI single scoring Zubia.  Senior shortstop Matthew Pezzato drew a walk, and senior third baseman Jon Baltz singled to load the bases before sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore connected on a three-RBI double.
            Moravian added a run in the top of the second inning for a 7-0 lead when O’Keefe doubles with one out, stole third and scored on an RBI ground out by Barfield.
            Eastern scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the second when outfielder Devon Ziegenfuss walked and scored on a ground ball hit by catcher Eric Smith.
            The Greyhounds scored three times in the top of the third to push their lead to 10-1.  Junior catcher Austin Rock led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Pezzato, pictured at left.  Rock scored on a wild pitch while Pezzato eventually scored on a passed ball.  Senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer drove in Del Priore, who had walked, with an RBI single/
            The Eagles would score two runs in the bottom of the third to cut Moravian’s lead to 10-3.  First baseman Mike McNulty hit an RBI sacrifice fly while designated hitter Greg DeSarro had an RBI single. 
            Moravian pushed six more runs home in the top of the fourth inning for a 16-3 lead.  Barfield led off with a walk before Baltz singles and Rock walked to load the bases.  Pezzato and Del Priore each drew an RBI walk for the Greyhounds while Schweitzer had a two-RBI single.  Zubia and Barfield would have RBI singles in the inning for Moravian. 
            The Greyhounds would add a pair of runs to their lead in the top of the fifth inning.  Rock led off the inning with a triple and scored on an RBI single from Pezzato, who would eventually score on an RBI sacrifice fly by Schweitzer.
            Moravian scored its final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning when Pezzato led off with a single and scored on a double play. 
            Eastern tallied the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single from outfielder Andrew DiFerdinando.
            The Greyhounds had a 20-9 advantage in hits with Pezzato going three-for-four with five runs, which tied the single game school record, and two RBIs, and Rock, pictured at right, going three-for-five with three runs.  Zubia was two-for-four with three RBIs while Barfield was two-for-three with three RBIs in his first collegiate action.  Schweitzer and Baltz were each two-for-five with Schweitzer adding four RBIs wile O’Keefe was three-for-six with a pair of doubles.  Del Priore was just one-for-one for Moravian but had four RBIs and scored twice.  Second baseman Dan Garcia was two-for-three to lead Eastern.
            Sophomore Tommy Fenyak, who missed the entire 2010 season due to an injury, picked up the win on the mound for the Greyhounds.  Fenyak tossed five innings in his first action in nearly two years, allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts.  Freshman Jason Jamula pitched two inning with a hit and four strikeouts while freshman Timothy Smith allowed a run on three hits with one strikeout in an inning of action.  Freshman Benjamin Hammel tossed the final inning for Moravian with a hit and two strikeouts. 
            Eastern used six pitchers in the game with Jim Edleman taking the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts in two innings of action to start the game for the Eagles.

At Hampden-Sydney College in 4th Annual Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament - Won 6-4 - Boxscore

            The Moravian College baseball team began its 2011 season with a 6-4 victory over host Hampden-Sydney College in the opening day of the 4th Annual Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament.
            The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first hitting with a pair of unearned runs on an RBI ground out from senior catcher Zach Harrelson and an RBI single by junior designated hitter Nick Caporale.
            The Greyhounds answered with a run in the top of the second inning.  Senior second baseman Jack Schweitzer led off with a single, and he scored on an RBI double from junior designated hitter Gregg Steinman, pictured at right.
            Moravian took a 3-2 lead in the top half of the third with two runs.  Junior shortstop Dave Zubia led off with a double and moved to third on an out.  Senior outfielder Mike Zubia followed with an RBI double to score Dave Zubia, and he moved to third on a passed ball.  Senior third baseman Jon Baltz hit an RBI ground out to score Mike Zubia. 
            The Greyhounds extended their lead to 4-2 with a single run in the fourth.  Steinman singled to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior catcher Blake Shortall.  Sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore then hit an RBI single to score Steinman.
            Moravian pushed the lead to 6-2 with two more runs in the top half of the fifth inning.  Junior first baseman Kevin O’Keefe led off with a double and scored on an RBI single from Mike Zubia.  Mike Zubia stole second base and moved to third on a ground out by Schweitzer before an RBI single from Steinman.
            Hampden-Sydney in the bottom of the fifth inning when senior outfielder Herbie Williams hit an RBI single to score junior second baseman Jeb Cope with an unearned run.
            The Tigers finished the scoring in the bottom of the seventh on a one-out solo home run by junior outfielder Jordan Wind.
            Moravian had a 12-7 advantage in hits in the game with Steinman going three-for-five.  Schweitzer and Mike Zubia were each two-for-five for the Greyhounds while Dave Zubia was two-for-four.  Harrelson was two-for-four for the Tigers.
            Junior Brendan Close, pictured at left, earned the victory on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing four runs but just one earned on six hits in seven innings on the mound.  Close struck out ten batters and didn’t walk anyone.  Junior Kyle Longernecker earned his first save of the season for Moravian, allowing a hit and striking out three batters in two innings of work.
            Freshman pitcher Kyle Pullen took the loss for Hampden-Sydney, giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits, a walk and a strikeout in 3 2/3 innings of action.  Senior Kyle Grantier tossed the final 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
