1998 Review

The Greyhounds under the direction of head coach Ed Little for the 15th season made a run at the Middle Atlantic Conference Playoffs before finishing the season with a 15-17 overall record. Heading into the final regular season doubleheader, Moravian needed a sweep to make the MAC playoffs for the first time since 1992.

The 'Hounds opened the campaign with the team’s first-ever trip to California.

Senior outfielder Mike Folcher (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West HS) led the Greyhounds with a .353 batting average this season. He collected 36 hits, including seven doubles, one triple and one home run, in 102 at-bats. Folcher, who was the Moravian College Outstanding Senior Male Athlete and an all-conference honoree in football, also led Moravian in runs scored with 23, RBIs with 22 and game winning RBIs with three.

Sophomore second baseman Jarrett Hughes (Bangor/Bangor HS) was second among the regulars with a .314 batting average. He had 32 hits with two doubles, two triples and one home run in 102 at-bats.

Classmate Mike DiOrio (Neshanic Station, NJ/Somerville HS) led Moravian with 19 walks. He added 13 hits in 71 at-bats.

Junior catcher/outfielder Scott Fritz (Barnesville/Mahoney Area HS) hits .283 with 30 hits in 106 at-bats. He had four doubles and two triples and was second on the team in runs scored with 20.

Freshman shortstop Mike Gill (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon HS) had 20 hits in 89 at-bats. He made 93 assists in the field, which set the single season record.

Another freshman who contributed in the second half of the season was designated hitter/outfielder Shawn Brown (Quakertown/Quakertown HS). He had 17 hits in 60 at-bats with on double, one home run and 14 RBIs.

Classmate Joe Pochron (Allentown/Salisbury HS) contributed 11 hits in 56 at-bats and threw 17 2/3 innings as a pitcher.

On the mound, junior Scott Bolasky (Germansville/Northwestern Lehigh HS) paced Moravian with a 4.12 earned run average and a 4-5 record. In 59 innings of work, Bolasky struck out 50 batters and allowed just 14 walks.

Sophomore Mark Slavin (Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg HS) posted a 4-3 record with a 4.44 earned run average. He threw 48 2/3 innings with 36 strikeouts and 23 walks.

Classmate Matt Seitzinger (Scranton/Scranton Prep) had a 2-2 record on the mound and saved three games this year. At the plate, Seitzinger, a third baseman, had ten hits in 53 at-bats.

Sophomore David Jelleme (Pequannock, NJ/Pequan-nock HS) appeared in 11 games and threw 24 innings. He had a 1-1 record and had one save.
