1997-98 Review

With a 10-2 stretch in the middle of the season, the Greyhounds, under the direction of head coach Jim Walker for the 17th season, finished the 1997-98 campaign with a 14-10 overall mark and a 6-8 slate in the MAC Commonwealth League. Included in the hot streak was the ‘Hounds third straight championship in the Greyhound Reebok Classic in early January.

Leading last year’s team on the court was junior Jason Moran (Scranton/West Scranton HS). He was named to the MAC Commonwealth league first team and the MVP of the Greyhound Reebok Classic for the third consecutive year. Moran also became the 15th player in school history to surpass the 1,000-point plateau with a 26-point effort at Albright.

He averaged a double-double for the season with a scoring average of 20.5 points per game and a rebounding average of 10.2 boards. His rebounding average along with his 2.3 blocked shots per game were tops in the MAC.

Junior Matt Getter (Broomall/Marple Newtown HS) was the team’s second leading scorer at 13.5 points per night. He also drained a team-high 62 three-pointers this winter. Off the court, he was named to the MAC All-Academic squad.

Sophomore Brad Hoffman (Whitehall/Whitehall HS) scored 9.3 points per game for the Greyhounds. He dished out 36 assists from his point guard position this season.

Classmate Rich Whalen (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick HS) netted 6.7 points a contest and was the team-leader in assists with 65 despite missing four games. Whalen was named to the MAC All-Academic team off the court.

Senior Brian McKee (Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh HS) completed his collegiate career with a scoring average of 6.3 points this winter. He was also the Greyhounds second leading rebounder with 4.4 boards per contest.

A promising group of freshmen all averaged over 4.5 points per game in their first season. David Jordan (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant HS) played in all 24 games and was second on the team in three-pointers with 23. He averaged 5.9 points per game along with 2.5 rebounds a night.

Curt DeFillippo (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East HS) saw action in just 18 games this winter but contributed 5.8 points a contest and drained 21 of 45 three-pointers.

Chris Hayn (Whitehall/Whitehall HS) scored 12 points in his first collegiate game against Union in November and finished the season with a scoring average of 4.5 points per game. Hayn, who missed four games with a broken nose, also grabbed 41 rebounds this year.

Junior Russ Lowe (Reading/Antietam HS) stepped up this season off the bench, contributing 70 points and 55 rebounds in 19 games.

Sophomore Justin Potts (Sparta, NJ/Sparta HS) saw action in 17 games as a starter and back-up at the point guard position. He had 23 assists and 20 points this season.
