At 2002 MCAA Division III Mideast Regional – 17th of 34
Moravian closed out its 2002 season with a 17th place finish of 34
schools at the 2002 NCAA Division III Mideast Regionals hosted by Salisbury
(MD) University. The Greyhounds had one All-Region runner with sophomore
Patrick Grogan placing 28th in a time of 25:44 on the 8,000-meter course.
Junior Joe Grady was second for the Greyhounds and 67th overall in
the 241-competitor field with a time of 26:37. Freshman Greg Rarick
placed 121st with a time of 27:31 while senior Wes Zimmerman was 138th
in 27:48. Moravian's other competitors included junior Marty Miller
in 148th place with a time of 28:06, freshman Will Shimer at 163rd
in 28:36 and freshman Russell Zaleski placing 176th with a time of
28:58. The Greyhounds did fall to Muhlenberg College in the Annual
Matte Award Standings as the Mules placed fourth in the race won by
Elizabethtown College.

At 2002 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships – 7th
of 11
The Greyhounds placed seventh of 11 schools at the 2002 Middle Atlantic
Conference Championships run at Lancaster Country Central Park. Host
Elizabethtown College won the MAC title with a 49-point victory over
Widener University. Moravian had one All-Middle Atlantic Conference
runner in sophomore Patrick Grogan, who completed the 8,000-meter course
in a time of 27:39. Grogan's time was good enough for 17th place and
a spot on the All-Conference Second Team. Junior Joe Grady placed second
for the Greyhounds and 27th overall in the 121-competitor race with
a time of 28:12. Freshman Greg Rarick was 44th with a time of 28:59
while classmate Will Shimer placed 61st in 29:43. Rounding out the
Moravian top six were senior Wes Zimmerman in 63rd place at 29:50 and
freshman Russell Zaleski in 66th place at 29:56.
Other competitors for the Greyhounds included junior Marty Miller
placing 72nd in 30:25, sophomore Matt Oertner taking 74th with a time
of 30:29, junior Sean McDonnell in 82nd place at 30:51, senior Matt
Plewinski in 92nd with a time of 31:20, sophomore Mike Caffrey placing
102nd in 31:58 and sophomore Anthony Bisti finishing 113th in 33:28.

At DeSales University Invitational – 13th of 40
Moravian placed 13th of 40 schools with a team score of 365 at the
2002 DeSales University Invitational. The Greyhounds' top individual
in the 275-competitor race was sophomore Patrick Grogan with a time
of 27:07.92 on the 8,000-meter course, good enough for 27th place.
Junior Joe Grady was 31st overall in 27:11.11 while junior Marty Miller
took 100th place with a time of 28:46.19. Freshman Will Shimer placed
fourth for Moravian and 102nd overall in 28:46.95 while senior Wes
Zimmerman was in 110th place with a time of 28:53.22. Rounding out
the Moravian runners were sophomore Matt Oertner in 115th place with
a time of 29:04.70 and freshman Russell Zaleski in 145th position in
a time of 29:45.83.
The Greyhounds also had four runners compete in the sub varsity race
with junior Sean McDonnell leading the quartet in a time of 29:48.00,
good enough for 53rd place in the field of 116 runners. Sophomore Michael
Caffrey was 85th in a time of 31:12.14 while senior Matt Plewinski
took 89th place in 31:27.80. Sophomore Anthony Bisti rounded out the
Moravian squad in 98th place with a time of 32:19.48.

Moravian placed 29th of 33 schools from all divisions at the 29th
Annual Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University. The Greyhounds posted
a team score of 819 in the meet and the squad was sixth of nine NCAA
Division III schools in the race. Sophomore Patrick Grogan paced Moravian
with a 139th place finish in a time of 27:14.96 on the 8,000-meter
course. Freshman Greg Rarick was 153rd of the 233 runners with a time
of 27:35.62 while junior Joe Grady was 155th in 27:36.80. Rounding
out the Moravian runners were senior Wes Zimmerman in 178th at 28:07.05,
junior Marty Miller placing 196th in 28:52.16, freshman Will Shimer
finishing 213th with a time of 29:50.75 and sophomore Matt Oertner
taking 217th in 30:23.45.
The Greyhounds also had five runners compete in the College Open race.
Freshman Russell Zaleski led that portion of the squad with a 129th
place finish in a time of 29:13.07. Junior Sean McDonnell was 149th
of the 184 runners in the College Open with a time of 30:00.97. The
other three Moravian runners included freshman Michael Caffrey in 161st
with a time of 30:41.76, junior Matt Plewinski placing 171st in 31:40.90
and sophomore Anthony Bisti taking 175th in 33:04.96.

The Greyhounds had their best race of the season as the squad placed
third of nine teams at the 2002 Elizabethtown College Invitational
run at Lancaster County Central Park in Lancaster, PA, the same course
that the 2002 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships will be run
on in November. Sophomore Patrick Grogan paced Moravian's ten runners
with a time of 28:35 on the 8,000-meter course. Freshman Greg Rarick
was second for the Greyhounds and 26th of the 104 competitors with
a time of 30:05 while junior Joe Grady placed 28th in 30:12. Freshman
Will Shimer finished in 34th place with a time of 30:55 while sophomore
Matt Oertner rounded out the Moravian top five with a 35th place finish
in 30:56. Other Greyhounds competitors included junior Marty Miller
finishing 38th with a time of 31:08, junior Sean McDonnell in 50th
at 31:51, sophomore Michael Caffrey placing 65th with a time of 32:52,
freshman Russell Zaleski finished 71st at 33:49 and sophomore Anthony
Bisti taking 91st with a time of 37:59.

At Lehigh Valley Championships hosted by Lehigh University – 7th

The Greyhounds placed second at the Second Annual Lehigh Valley Collegiate
Championships hosted by Lehigh University. Moravian had a team score
of 153 and was paced by sophomore Patrick Grogan, who was 30th of 89
runners on the 8,000-meter course with a time of 27:21.2. Freshman
Greg Rarick was second for the Greyhounds, placing 33rd in 27:38.6.
Rounding out Moravian's top five competitors were junior Marty Miller
in 36th place at 27:50.6, junior Joe Grady at 38th with a time of 27:53.3
and senior Wes Zimmerman in 47th place at 28:09.7. The Greyhounds have
five other runners in the race with sophomore Matt Oertner placing
51st in 28:24.4, freshman Russell Zaleski taking 64th with a time of
29:07.2, junior Sean McDonnell placing 68th in 29:15.4, sophomore Anthony
Bisti taking 79th in 31:00.2 and senior Matt Plewinski finishing 84th
in 32:17.7.

At Salisbury University Seagull Opener – 8th of 14
The Moravian men’s cross country team took eighth of 14 schools
at the Seagull opener hosted by Salisbury University to open the 2002
season. The Greyhounds had nine competitors in the 156-runner field
led by junior Marty Miller in 34th place in a time of 27:33.81 on the
8,000-meter course. Junior Joe Grady was second for the Greyhounds,
placing 42nd overall in 27:41.58. Freshman Greg Rarick was 56th with
a time of 28:04.14 while sophomore Matt Oertner was 80th in 28:41.26.
Freshman William Shimer took 85th place in 28:49.02 while freshman
Russell Zaleski placed 103rd in a time of 29:20.42. Rounding out the
Greyhounds were freshman Michael Caffrey in 125th place with a time
of 30:49.88, senior Matt Plewinski in 126th at 30:49.88 and sophomore
Anthony Bisti in 128th place with a time of 30:54.66.
