The Greyhounds surprised some people this fall as the squad placed seventh at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional to closeout the 2000 season with just one senior on the team and a sophomore and freshman earning All-Mideast Region accolades.
Moravian placed fourth in the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. The Greyhounds won the Muhlenberg Invitational this season and defeated rival Muhlenberg in a dual meet at West Chester University. Moravian was in the top ten in six of seven meets this fall.
Sophomore Wes Zimmerman (Boyertown/Boyertown HS) paced Moravian in the second half of the season and he was the top Greyhound at the MAC and regional meets. Zimmerman was 11th in the MAC Championships at 27:40.22 and 30th in the Mideast Regional with a time of 27:30.70 to earn All-Region honors. Zimmerman’s best time of the 2000 season was at the Muhlenberg Invitational where he placed third in 27:15.4.
Freshman Joe Grady (Nanticoke/Nanticoke HS) was the other Moravian runner to earn All-Region honors by placing 34th with a time of 27:35.00. Grady finished 13th in the MAC meet and had a season best time of 27:19.29 when he placed 14th in the Allentown Invitational.
Sophomore George Wacker (Honesdale/Honesdale HS) missed being an All-Region runner by one spot as he placed 36th in the Mideast Regional with a time of 27:45.00, his best effort of the year. Wacker finished 24th in the MAC Championships.
Senior Damon Rutherford (Reading/Exeter HS) was hampered by injuries during his final season but he did lead the team in two races this season. Rutherford ran the Greyhounds’ best time of the season with a 27:08.11 at the NYU Invitational in September. Rutherford missed three outings during the middle of the season and returned for the MAC Championships where he placed 42nd. He finished 71st at the Mideast Regional to closeout his career.
The Greyhounds had a pair of runners fighting it out for the fifth position in the final weeks of the season. Junior Chris Colley (Easton/Easton HS) placed 333rd in the MAC meet and 96th in the regional while freshman Sean McDonnell (Scranton/Scranton Prep) was 35th at the MAC Championships and 124th at the Mideast race. Colley’s best effort of the season was in the MAC meet with a time of 28:29.16 while McDonnell ran a 28:24.6 at the Muhlenberg Invitational.
Sophomore Matt Plewinski (Hatfield/North Penn HS) was Moravian’s seventh runner at the MAC meet in 53rd place and the NCAA regional in 138th. Plewinski’s best time of the year was 29:16.2 in the MAC Championships and his effort in the West Chester Duals allowed the Greyhounds to defeat Muhlenberg.
Other runners for that competed for the Greyhounds this season at the MAC Championships were sophomore Justin Arnold (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge HS) and junior Josh Heebner (Lansdale/North Penn HS). Arnold was 57th in 29:22.33 while Heebner finished 70th in 29:59.57.
Zimmerman, Rutherford and Colley were named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll this season.
With six of its top seven runners back next season, the Greyhounds’ men’s cross country program should challenge for the MAC title. Moravian won six straight MAC Championships from 1993 to 1998.
